The Most Tragically Funny Quotes From ‘Joker’
If you’ve seen the smash-hit movie, we want you to vote for the best Joker quotes. This revisionist take on the popular DC villain is filled with character quotes that get inside his dark and twisted mind. There are also some funny lines and wicked one-liners.
Joker was directed and co-written by Todd Phillips, who previously made The Hangover and its sequels. Co-starring in the film are Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Shea Wigham, and Brett Cullen. Together with Phoenix and DeNiro, they deliver a hard R-rated comic book movie unlike any we’ve seen before.
Vote up the most memorable Joker quotes you like best from the list below, regardless of which character speaks them.
Mental Illness
Arthur Fleck (written in his notebook): The worst part of having a mental illness is people expect you to behave as if you don’t.
You Get What You Deserve
Arthur Fleck: How ’bout another joke, Murray?
Murray Franklin: No, I think we’ve had enough of your jokes.
Arthur Fleck: What do you get.
Murray Franklin: I don’t think so.
Murray Franklin: I think we’re done here now, thank you.
Murray Franklin: Call the police, Gene, call the police.
Arthur Fleck: I’ll tell you what you get! You get what you f*ckin’ deserve!
Joker (2019): “How About Another Joke, Murray?” [Transcript]
CLASSIC SCENE
Arthur is invited to appear on Murray’s show due to the popularity of his stand-up routine clips. Before the show goes live, Arthur requests that Murray introduce him as Joker – a reference to Murray’s mockery. Arthur waltzes out to applause, but the mood changes when he behaves lewdly, tells morbid jokes, confesses to the train murders, rants about how society abandons the downtrodden and mentally ill, and berates Murray for mocking him on the previous segment. Murray’s enthusiasm for Arthur quickly turns, and as he threatens to call the police, Arthur shoots him in the head on live television.
Joker: …killed those three Wall Street guys.
[Audience gasps and murmurs]
Murray: Okay, I’m waiting for the punchline.
Joker: There is no punchline. It’s not a joke.
Murray: You’re serious, aren’t you? You’re telling us you killed those three young men on the subway?
Murray: And why should we believe you?
Joker: I ain’t got nothing left to lose. Nothing can hurt me anymore. [Chuckles] My life is nothing but a comedy.
[Audience murmuring and booing]
Murray: Let me get this straight. You think that killing those guys is funny?
Joker: I do. And I’m tired of pretending it’s not. Comedy is subjective, Murray. Isn’t it what they say? All of you… the system that knows so much… you decide what’s right or wrong? The same way that you decide what’s funny, or not.
Audience member: Get him off!
Murray: Okay, I think I might understand that you… did this to start a movement? To become a symbol?
Joker: Come on, Murray… Do I look like the kind of clown that could start a movement? I killed those guys because they were awful. Everybody is awful these days. It’s enough to make anyone crazy.
Murray: Okay, so that’s it. You’re crazy. That’s your defense for killing three young men?
Joker: Nah. They couldn’t carry a tune to save their lives.
Joker: Oh, why is everybody so upset about these guys? If it was me dying on the sidewalk, you’d walk right over me! I pass you every day and you don’t notice me but these guys, what, because Thomas Wayne went and cried about them on TV?
Murray: You have a problem with Thomas Wayne too?
Joker: Yes, I do. Have you seen what it’s like out there, Murray? Do you ever actually leave the studio? Everybody just yells and screams at each other. Nobody’s civil anymore! Nobody thinks what it’s like to be the other guy! You think men like Thomas Wayne ever think what it’s like to be someone like me? To be somebody but themselves? They don’t. They think that we’ll just sit there and take it like good little boys. That we won’t werewolf and go wild!
Murray: You finished? I mean, it’s so much self-pity, Arthur. You sound like you’re making excuses for killing those young men! Not everybody, and I’ll tell you this, not everyone is awful.
Joker: You’re awful, Murray.
Murray: Me? I’m awful? Oh yeah, how am I awful?
Joker: Playing my video. Inviting me on the show. You just wanted to make fun of me. You’re just like the rest of them!
Murray: You don’t know the first thing about me, pal. Look what happened because of what you did, what it led to. There are riots out there. Two policemen are in critical condition, and you’re laughing, you’re laughing. Someone was killed today because of what you did.
Joker: I know! How about another joke, Murray?
Murray: No, I think we’ve had enough of your jokes.
Joker: What do you get…
Murray: I don’t think so.
Joker: …when you cross a mentally ill loner with a society that abandons him and treats him like trash!?
Murray: Call the police, Gene, call the police.
[Arthur shoots Murray in the head]
Joker: Goodnight. And always remember: That’s-

His Oscar was well deserved. The fact that he looks like he’s about to cry with every sentence, and how his anger slowly grew.
@Amili Ohana mediocre acting.
His Oscar is deserved.
But why no one see that movie is stupid
«IF it was ME dying on the sidewalk youd WALK right OVER ME»!! 100 percent accurate
@MizzouPatriot 88 exactly. That was the scenario. You can tell that was true emotion coming to the surface with that line and not just acting.
@lordgoro Yet no one,to this day,has tried to make a change.
@tthank yy
SOCIETY
@tthank yy not surprised
literally saw a dead guy on the sidewalk in seattle recently, everyone just walking by
“Everybody just yells and screams at each other! Nobody’s civil anymore! Nobody thinks what it’s like to be the other guy!” That is what sticks with me the most from this scene.
Cause it’s absolutely true!
When the Joker said «It’s jokin time» and joked all over Murray I couldn’t stop crying. Vince did it again
I like the idea of crediting Vince with all movies ever made from now on.
I don’t think people realize how important this scene is. It shows the breaking point. Most of us would never cross that line, this shows what it’s like.
@Arweinydd Rhyfel thats when he realized how easy it is to get rid of your problems
wdym? he’s literally me.
The Punch line and The Beginning to the Joker
I personally think the breaking point was when he killed the 3 guys on the train.. That’s when something in him really broke I believe
lmao nah, have u seen the views??
Imagine being such a good actor that people forget that Robert De Niro is in the scene.
@YANK.MY.DOODLE! ITS A DANDY! Trump yourself
@Jack Green irishman owned, you had bad taste
I will never forget this scene; seeing it in theaters, the gasp that we all took when he took the shot. It was such a wide-shot angle, so abrupt. It really is one of the best movies I have seen, maybe in a decade.
I think the cinematography in this scene was inspired by the Budd Dwyer suicide video. The violence of the sound and the way Murray’s head recoils are shockingly realistic which I think alot of audiences weren’t ready for.
You most be a filthy casual then. Everyone that knows Joker saw the kill coming from a mile away brah
@Luna Picot that last line clean
I don’t get shocked that much but this scene was crazy and I appreciate this film for being different
I remember watching this in the cinema full of people, the silence in the theater was terrifying for this scene. Joaquin Phoenix was so perfect in this movie it really felt like it was real.
@AutspecReality315 Some towns are called villages lol
@you know who you are :: with JokerMask on or not.
My Scorpio is perfect. Joaquin Phoenix
Es muy buena. La pena es que no todo el mundo entendió el mensaje. incluso lo entendieron al revés. así vamos!!
Una grandísima película! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The crying right before he kills him is intense, it shows just how mentally unstable the Joker truly started. Knowing the difference between wrong and right and yet still able to cross the line. My man truly deserved this Oscar.
@Logan shits all Batman movies okay that’s too far lmao
The psychological acting is beyond expectations
He deserved the Oscar much more than Ledger
The way his legs are shaking and his face after what he does, the adrenaline you can’t control, that was some performance
And how tears formed in his eyes the moment he got pushed into that moment
I think that only Joaquin Phoenix could portray the Joker this way.
«As kids, we loved the heroes, as adults, we understand the villains. «
@The Donzo well actually that was 9 days ago. Must be hard for you to understand, seeing as you’re too young to read.
@Life Thoughts mommy didnt make your chocolate milk today?
@Life Thoughts You’re unreasonably up tight.
@Masterdeetectiv Well he did both.
I never thought i would’ve loved this movie so much without this scene. It shows a lot how people can lose their minds and become evil, all because they are mistreated. I urge everyone to start treating others with respect and kindness, just as how you would want to be treated, or more things like this will happen. My heart goes out to all those that are suffering like this.
Honestly, part of the reason why this movie felt so dark and gritty is because it felt so raw and real. It really made people feel uncomfortable because despite Arthur’s actions he’s a relatable character.
Also, with everything going on in the world right now the dark, dystopian version of Gotham we see in Joker is a relatable setting.
With regards to the Ledger vs Phoenix argument, comparing them is rather silly because they are two completely different takes on the Joker character in two completely different styles of movie. In TDK Joker is the villain of a superhero movie, but in Joker Phoenix is playing the Joker in a psychological thriller based on the character, and as such rather than being the villain in the movie we are seeing the world from Arthur/Joker’s POV where in a way he acts as both the protagonist and the villain at the same time.
It’s weird because we are so used to the Joker being a straight up villain that it’s strange to have pop cultures greatest ever villain in a protagonist role. It was the same with the Star Wars prequels, we have Anakin as the major protagonist but we knew that at some point he was going to transition into Darth Vader.
Both Ledger and Phoenix produced masterpiece performances, but stop comparing them, they’re completely different.
people should also remember Jack who killed it
Exactly. This movie plays the same even if he is just a generic guy and not the joker. The character being based around the Joker just got more eyeballs.
Right? Really no reason to compare them, or any way to compare them that would be accurate in any meaningful way. They are radically different personalities in completely different genres of tonally different films. What I think is so great about that is how it makes the unbelievable talent of both actors so clear. They play the same character (one of the most iconic, familiar, & beloved villians of all time), completely wreck us with the genius of their work, and are somehow entirely different from one another. Its incredible
You are clearly a lot more intelligent than me. But I totally agree with what you have said. They are both amazing performances. Such gifted actors. I wish Heath Ledger was still with us. RIP.
I agree with you and i want to point out at the Ledger-Phoenix comparison. Both played a shocking good joker, prob the best jokers all time imo but the difference is huge. Ledger played a full crazy maniac joker, many years later than Phoenix’s joker. In Ledger joker we saw a complete evolvement in hatred and where this can lead you, while Phoenix joker rapidly ascend from a traumatized guy into hate. I really believe that the comparison should be stopped once and for all and just appreciate how much work you have to put to be able to replicate such a strong and unique character that joker while being a normal people like these 2 actors were. Sadly Ledger is no longer alive but man what a talent he was
«If it was me dying on the sidewalk you’d walk right over me.» RIP River Phoenix
This was that exact scenario. Whenever I see Joaquin I can’t help but think of his brother bc I grew up with his films. They’re both brilliant. But I always wonder what could have been if River had lived. So much trauma esp since they survived and were abused by the Children of God cult. It’s beautiful that he named his son after his brother.
The joke is so good it blew Murray’s mind
Hope this comment gets a million likes lol

You don’t even have to love the writing of this movie to appreciate Joaquin’s performance. He gave this performance his all and this scene displays that clear as day.
I love how the after he kills Murray, that’s like his first and only GENUINE laugh he has the entire film.
I remember when this movie was coming out and almost everyone was bad talking it like it was gonna be the worst movie ever. I knew it was gonna be awesome and didn’t know what to expect I actually went to the theater to see it. I remember really liking how dark and realistic it was
