Top 10 Dragons from How to Train Your Dragon
It’s no secret that having a dragon for a pet would super cool, but a lot of training would go into making sure the dragon could be house-trained. As in, making sure the dragon won’t burn down your house with its fire breath, or destroy everything with its massive wings.
The How to Train Your Dragon movies have presented a wide variety of dragon species, each with its own strengths and challenges. If you’re planning to train some dragons of your own, here is our guide to the top 10 breeds of dragon from the How to Train Your Dragon series!
Gronckle
Gronckles are big, tough, and slow dragons that have a rough and rocky texture. Their wings are humorously tiny, and they are not as agile when flying as some of their fellow dragons. Generally, they are lazy creatures but can shoot fireballs rapidly from their mouths. Fishlegs has a Gronckle named Meatlug, who helps in the Viking fight against the Red Death dragon.
Terrible Terror
Terrible Terror dragons are some of the smallest dragons around. They are roughly the size of a domestic cat, and are common household pests that can breathe fire. They like to crawl into Viking homes and make messes with their speed and stealth. Terrible Terrors’ behavior has been compared to that of seagulls, often fighting for food and swarming in small packs.
Hideous Zippleback
Two heads are always better than one, especially when it comes to the Hideous Zippleback. This dragon can breathe fire, but only when the heads work together. One side spits flammable gas, while the other can create sparks that ignite the gas into fire. Both heads have their own distinct personalities. Twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut ride a Zippleback called Barf and Belch.
Deadly Nadder
Deadly Nadders are as beautiful as they are dangerous. Their bodies are covered with hundreds of sharp spines that they can shoot at enemies to cause massive damage. Nadder fire is also so hot that it can melt solid rock. Astrid has a Deadly Nadder named Stormfly.
Monstrous Nightmare
The massive Monstrous Nightmare dragon is known for setting itself on fire. This species is aggressive and powerful, covered in a variety of horns and spines. Its color patterns even look flame-like, and the Nightmare can even walk on its wings to approach its enemies. Snotlout rides a Monstrous Nightmare called Hookfang.
Night Fury
Night Furies are said to be the unholy offspring of lightning and death itself. A jet black color, these deadly dragons blend in with the night sky and can perform devastating divebomb attacks on Viking villages. They shoot plasma bursts instead of fire like most other dragons.
At first, Hiccup’s dragon Toothless is the only Night Fury to be shown in the How to Train Your Dragon series. Later, Toothless is joined by a Light Fury, similarly swift and plasma-powered as well as an expert in camouflage. These two very special dragons eventually start a family together, with their children Dart, Pouncer, and Ruffrunner, affectionately called the Night Lights.
Bewilderbeast
The Bewilderbeast is the biggest breed of dragon, and also one of the rarest. They have the ability to commune with other dragons and to control them. Bewilderbeasts also do not spit fire, but can freeze water as it exits their mouth for powerful ice attacks. They also use this ice to create giant nests for themselves.
Rumblehorn
The Rumblehorn has a massive spike protruding from its face, somewhat resembling a rhinoceros’ horn. They have a heightened sense of smell, able to track prey over long distances by scent alone. Rumblehorns are burly but agile, and often attack by ramming themselves into things. Stoick the Vast has a Rumblehorn named Skullcrusher.
Stormcutter
The Stormcutter dragon is an expert flyer, aided by its four wings which form an X shape while in motion. These dragons can make dangerous maneuvers and impressive displays of acrobatics while in the air. They can also spin fire tornadoes by using their wings as they breathe flames. Valka has a Stormcutter named Cloudjumper.
Red Death
The Red Death is a massive dragon with three pairs of eyes. It is much larger than most dragons, and does not hunt for itself. Instead, the Red Death acts as the queen of a larger nest of dragons, and all the smaller dragons bring it food in tribute. It can control other dragons and make them swarm.
Honorable Mention: Hobgobblers!
The Hobgobblers, introduced in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, are as destructive as they are adorable — which is to say, very. They devour anything and everything in their way with that adorable snaggle-toothed underbite.
Every dragon is different in its strengths and powers. Some are big and terrifying while some are small and pesky, but that’s nothing a bit of dragon training can’t fix!
Dragons:List of Dragon Species from How To Train Your Dragon
There are many species of Dragons known in the How To Train Your Dragon Franchise. Of the dozens of known dragons, the Vikings of the Hairy Hooligan Tribe prefer to classify them into seven different classes. The first Viking to classify dragons was Bork the Bold, ancestor to Gobber the Belch and creator of the Book of Dragons.

Stoker Class Dragons
Stoker Class dragons are hot-headed fire breathers. This class includes dragons that can set themselves on fire, as well as most of the smaller dragon species. A Stoker Class dragon losing its fire is a sign that it is going to die, although its flames can be reignited by a Fireworm Queen’s venom or by eating their Flame Gel combs. The dragon species included in the Stoker Class are:
Boulder Class Dragons
Boulder Class dragons are tough dragons and are associated with the earth. They can eat rocks, and although they have small wings relative to their body size, they are able to fly as fast and as high as most other dragons can. The dragon species included in the Boulder Class are:
Tracker Class Dragons
The Tracker Class is a new class discovered in Race to the Edge. This is due to the fact that dragons have now been tamed and trained. The symbol of this class reuses the Fear Class symbol, despite the Hideous Zippleback not belonging to this Class. Natural born hunters, Tracker Class dragons have a highly acute sense of smell or taste that enables them to track down and find things. The dragon species included in this class are
Sharp Class Dragons
Sharp Class dragons are vain and prideful species, and they all possess sharp body parts. The dragons included in this class are
Tidal Class Dragons
Tidal Class dragons live in or near the ocean, and unlike most dragons, they do not breathe fire as their ranged attacks, and although very few can, they rarely do use them. The dragons in this class are generally larger in size than most of the other classes. Hiccup also stated that Tidal Class dragons don’t react well to signs of aggression. The dragons included are:
Mystery Class Dragons
Little is known about the Mystery Class dragons due to how stealthy and sneaky they are. Dragons in this class are generally more feared than those in the other dragon classes. The dragon species included are:
Strike Class Dragons
Strike Class dragons are characterized by their «blazing speed, vice-like jaw strength, and extreme intelligence,» as well as pinpoint accuracy, powerful attacks, explosive firepower and a unique ability to allow them to navigate in their respective environments/atmosphere. The dragons in this class are some of the rarest of all dragons, and some are close to extinction. They are also the most difficult to train but the most loyal once they have been trained, they are also generally among the most powerful dragons. The dragons included are:
Alpha class
The Alpha Dragon is the individual in the dragon community with the highest known rank. The role of Alpha is often won by combat, sometimes to the death, but not necessarily. The winner of the battle will win both the rank of Alpha and the loyalty of all dragonkind. Alpha’s natural duty is to protect all dragons and guarantee peace among them, thus it is a very important role for the survival of dragonkind. Unfortunately, this role can be seriously abused as seen in the events caused by the Drago’s Bewilderbeast. the dragons included are: (idk how to use link please someone else add the dragons)
==Unclassified Dragons==Media:Example.ogg Some dragons in the franchise have not yet been officially classified into any class and may be sorted in the future. The reasons for this lack of information varies. Firstly, it is simply because the dragon is too new or had only made very few appearances in media. Usually, this happens when the dragon was created by a company other than DreamWorks. The currently unclassified dragons are an original dragon from the Arena Spectacular, the four remaining unknown dragons in How to Train Your Dragon 2, the unknown dragons on Hiccup’s map in How to Train Your Dragon 2, the three unidentified dragons that appear in the Book of Dragons, the flightless dragon that appears at the end of Burning Midnight, two dragon species from Race to the Edge, and one that is considered to be mythical.

For individual dragons, see the entries where they come from.
Strike Class
The Unholy Offspring of Lightning and Death itself, Night Furies are fast, stealthy, and hit with enough firepower to blow the tops of catapult towers into cinders. They are the most feared dragons amongst the ranks of the Vikings. They belong to the Strike Class of dragons, emphasizing the classification’s hard-hitting firepower and speed. They have a closely related subspecies with white coloration known as Light Furies.
An elusive member of the Strike Class of dragons, the Skrill are known for their unique electrical abilities.
An erratic Strike Class dragon that lives in glaciers.
An extremely dangerous Strike Class dragon that specializes in melee combat.
A Strike Class dragon, an elusive subspecies to the Night Fury that has the ability to cloak itself with its Breath Weapon.
A fearsome Strike Class dragon that travels in packs and preys on other dragons. They possess tusks, pincers, and a clubbed tail with a venomous stinger on its end.
A Strike Class dragon, a hybrid between a Night Fury and a Light Fury.
Stoker Class
The iconic Stoker Class dragon, Monstrous Nightmares are the largest of the common dragons and are well-known for their violent streak and their copious firepower.
Terrible Terrors may be small, but they are no less dangerous than their larger kin amongst the dragons.
Typhoomerangs have a unique ability during flight: they rotate (by analogy with the typhoon/ boomerang) at high speeds, zooming through the air. Though, as they rotate, they seem to pop off the objects around them, making them extremely dangerous. The ash from their fire breath leaves a distinctive burn on the ground. The ash apparently acts as a fertilizer; flowers will grow in the burn mark afterward.
Small Stoker Class dragons, Fireworms are lizard-sized and lizard-like dragons that rely on their fiery skin to shield them from bigger enemies. They swarm in large numbers. Their Queen, however, is massive and can breathe fire like regular dragons.
A species of dragon found by Hiccup’s group, similar to Terrible Terrors but slightly larger. They make up for their lack of size by flying in formations to make themselves look like one very large dragon. There are two notable subspecies: a white-colored, subterranean variant that is sensitive to light, and a red-colored, volcanic variant that lives on Defenders of the Wing island.
A large Stoker Class dragon that launches fireballs from its tail as well as its mouth and can even jet fire from its underside. Their combat abilities are among the most versatile of any dragon and due to this, they become the mounts the Dragon Flyer Krogan specifically seeks to use.
The aircraft bomber of dragons, the Shadow Wing is never on its own. The smaller dragons are seen first, herding prey into the jaws of one larger dragon that hides the rest of the pack in the shadows of its wings.
A frilled Stoker Class dragon that changes color based on mood.
A Stoker Class dragon that secretes poison through its skin.
Boulder Class
The iconic Boulder Class dragon, Gronckles are relatively small and sluggish dragons, but extremely tough and strong.
A rare and deadly member of the Boulder Class, the Whispering Death is a subterranean species of dragon that uses its wide mouth, spike-covered sinuous body, and six rows of rotating teeth to bore through the ground and come up from below when pursuing prey.
A large Boulder Class dragon that can curl and roll its body like a giant ball.
A lazier, fussier member of the Gronckle’s family tree.
A huge Boulder Class dragon that lives in volcanoes, feeding off of the lava flow.
Gargoyle-like dragons that pretend to be statues. Entirely blind, they stand guard over the final dragon resting place of Vanaheim.
An intelligent and hard-working Boulder Class dragon that uses its own head as a tool.
A playful and sturdy Boulder Class dragon that feeds on geodes.
An enormous Boulder Class dragon with moose-like antlers.
A large, blind dragon with the ability to drill through rock.
A pig-like dragon that wallows in the magma it spews.
Tracker Class
The Deadly Nadder was originally the iconic Sharp Class dragon, a category of dragons distinguished by their natural arsenal of spines. However, after the events of Gift of the Night Fury and the discovery of the Tracker Class, they were categorized into this new class which is distinguished by sharp senses with Nadders being noted to be able to detect spies from upwards of a hundred meters away. Amongst the most avian-looking dragons, these vainglorious dragons spend much of their time preening themselves.
Discovered in the episode «Crushing It,» of Race To The Edge, but first seen in How To Train Your Dragon 2, the Rumblehorn also resulted in the discovery of a new classification of dragons: Tracker Class. Described as the bloodhounds of dragons, Rumblehorns serve as the iconic for the class alongside the former Sharp Class iconic, the Deadly Nadders.
A free-spirited Tracker Class dragon found in herds.
A curious Tracker Class dragon with not much of a sense of boundaries.
A hunch-backed Tracker Class dragon.
A large rhino/beetle-like dragon with a crystalline horn.
Sharp Class
A giant Sharp Class dragon, the Timberjack gets its name from its ability to cut down trees with its huge wings.
A breed of raptor-like, flightless dragons.
A Sharp Class dragon with metallic scales.
The vultures of the dragon world, these pack hunters prey on the aging and ailing dragons that come to Vanaheim. They can fire their thousands of teeth out of their mouths at would-be attackers.
A large Sharp Class dragon is introduced in the second movie. Notable for its four wings and owl-like appearance.
A Sharp Class dragon that enjoys rainy weather.
A Sharp Class dragon that attacks foes with jets of super-heated air.
A reclusive, but loyal Sharp Class dragon.
A Sharp Class dragon with a powerful bite and boisterous offspring.
A small dragon with the ability to blow an exploding bubble out of its horn.
Tidal Class
One of the original two Tidal Class dragons known in the series, Thunderdrums are large, frog-like dragons who spend most of their time in the water.
A large Tidal Class dragon that lives almost entirely out to sea. Spends most of its time underwater and so is rarely a threat unless it takes a hankering for a netload of fish, or decides to get territorial around a ship.
A manta ray-like Tidal Class dragon with two heads and electrical abilities.
A giant, frog-like Tidal Class dragon that is known for creating whirlpools strong enough to drown entire Viking ships.
A giant, armored Tidal Class dragon with a blue, meteor-like Breath Weapon.
Described as the alpha species, Bewilderbeasts are titanic Tidal Class dragons that naturally tend to find the role of alpha dragon amongst packs.
A two-headed eastern dragon that breathes fire from one head, and ice from the other.
A large, aquatic dragon resembling a mix of a basking shark and a manta ray.
Mystery Class
The Hideous Zippleback was originally the iconic Fear Class dragon but was reclassified when the Vikings of Berk no longer need to fear dragons. This two-headed dragon exemplifies the bizarre nature of its class with its two heads which must work in tandem to be dangerous. One head breathes the gas, and the other lights it, resulting in major explosions. The gas itself is also dangerous, but only with long-term exposure.
A large Mystery Class dragon, Boneknappers earn their moniker due to their macabre habit of assembling an armor of dragon bones to shield their bodies.
A four-headed Mystery Class dragon, Snaptrappers are often compared to Venus Flytraps due to their ability to lure prey into their flower-like jaws with a sweet scent.
Small Mystery Class dragons that dwell in isolated regions. They produce thick clouds of smoke and use this as camouflage.
A member of the Mystery Class of dragons, Changewings are best known for their chameleonic scales, which make them extremely difficult to find.
The Flightmare is a Mystery Class (originally from the Fear Class) dragon that appears in Dragons: Defenders of Berk. It is among the most terrifying and frightening dragons.
One of the first new species of dragons the group encounters on their travels. The Death Song gains its name from its ability to lure prey with an enthralling screech.
A Mystery Class dragon that lacks natural armor, but steals metal objects to create a metal armoring to protect its body.
A large salamander-like dragon that forces other dragons out of their caves and takes over.
A yak-like dragon that was hunted to near extinction because its saliva could cure the Scourge of Odin.
An aggressive dragon that attacks Vikings with shiny objects and drags them beneath the sand to its underground lair. Fortunately, it can be harmed by direct sunlight.
Dragons that resemble giant snakes with wings with the ability to spit and secrete an extremely deadly poison.
A Mystery Class dragon with the mysterious ability to replicate the Breath Weapon of any dragon species they see.
A small and round frog-like Mystery Class dragon.
A shy dragon with a crest that resembles a set of feathers.
Spider-like dragons that spit burning gel that makes a strong silk.
Other
A mythical dragon that allegedly bites humans to turn them into fellow members of its species.
Dragon Names
I’m not sure if there’s already a thread like this.. it’s mostly for my own «problem» solution but maybe it’ll help new players too!
So basically I’d like to know how you come up with names for your dragons? I am having major problems with it ’cause like.. you know how in the HTTYD universe they name their dragons based on traits etc they have? Tbh, I feel kinda dumb ’cause I really can’t think of names that aren’t too ordinary or make any sense.
How do you decide a name for your dragon?
Do you name them based on traits etc.?
Or do you give them simple names that just sound cool?
Maybe you can comment your «methods»!
Thank you for reading this.. maybe. 😀
I just stare at the dragon for minutes, in total silence. Then I scare everyone being in the room with: ZEPRIO IT SHALL BE.
Zeprio is the name of my first Triple Stryke. When I looked at him, I thought of a scorpion and a zebra. Mix em together, edit the last part, and BOOM.
But I also tend to name a dragon because it just sounds cool to me.
An exception is for the Elder Sentinel. His name is Warfire, because he helped us in so many dragon tactics levels.
Welcome to my Siggy!

She’s now 28. But during rp’s, her age varies a bit. I like to give them “timelines”: Imagine a timeline. Birth, important moments.. all shown on it. Let’s say that the rp’s get placed on there too.

I’m really not a fan of the «smash two traits together and make a name» method. So I use other ways.
Here are some of my methods.
These two work very well for me. You can take a look at my signature if you want any ideas.
I have all my dragons names listed down there.

I either sit and stare, then come up with something in French (or occasionally another language) or I look over at my bookshelf and pick a random word/name that I really like that I think fits. For example, my last triple strike was named Baskervilles after The Hound of the Baskervilles. So cool seeing everyone’s naming process tho!

Oh my word, this is Ivy as a human! I can’t get over how good this is and how much detail was put into this amazing art that just made a very special boneknapper come to life. This masterpiece was made by DyliehIdol1214
(the picture needed to be this big so you can all of the awesomeness detail)
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH LOOK AT MY BOY SURGE. He’s a titan scuttleclaw as a human. He literally looks so amazing and perfect. I cannot thank you, DyliehIdol1214, enough for doing another of my boys. I’ll finally stop bothering you now XD
Like, look at him and Ivy, I literally have no words.
You guys, look at Sam. This completely amazing drawing of my first titan deadly nadder (adopted back in 2014), just warms my heart and makes me so happy! Thank you SilverNight so much!
Sooooooooooo, this awesome dragon was created with three words: whelmed, shadow, and forever. Flitt took on the challenge and made this beautiful work of art. I simply can’t get enough!
*note to self: look up synonyms for awesome

I tend to like using two-words together (eg Sunstar) and I have a list of words that I like mixing together depending on the dragons trait or personality. I also sometimes use one word names, such as Guardian or Peppermint (Snoggletog themed name!) but I like sticking to the two-words together names because there are so many possibilities and they all accurately describe their personalities or traits! 😀
I go by the name Stormy! 😀

Did you make it to the end. Stormshear and I say. «Congratulations. «
Usually songs or lyrics, but sometimes I ask my family. That’s why my Grockle ended up being called Wuffi and my Smokebreath Kartöffelchen. Sometimes foreign languages (no, not English) like Sinaasappel, sometimes a mix of a foreign language and something about the dragon, like Witchura. I have a weakness for really ugly words so if I stumble across one I’ll either rant about it for days or name a dragon or use it all the time xD
Outside of game info: I love listening to music, most of my dragons are named after songs. I’m watching One Piece (finally at the current episode) and what I like the best about HTTYD are the dragons. My favourite dragons are the Skrill, the Stormcutter, the Triple Stryke and the Moldruffle. I also play Rise of Berk and I read Warrior Cats (in German). My favourite movie is Into The Wild (no, not only because of the soundtracks. but they’re a big part of it too XD)
This is my dragon cave account.
My characters
Those are documents mainly about my dragons, but also adoptables and own characters. I’d like to thank everyone who made art for me, I’m always happy to see others’ interpretations of my characters. I’ll link them soon. I will also link the songs I named them after, if there’s no music video I’ll link a live video because they’re more interesting to me. If there’s no decent quality live video either I’ll try to link an audio XD

Viking Alphabet
The Viking alphabet seen in the books
The Viking alphabet is an alphabet that Vikings in of the Barbaric Archipelago use to read and write. Most of the text shown appears in the Dragon Manual when Hiccup was looking up information about Night Furies while others show up in Book of Dragons and other How to Train Your Dragon related media. The language is written in English, yet the characters are translated into runic script with a few characters modified therefor, making this language distinct.
When Hiccup reads the dragon manual, The sentences that he reads are in the How to Train your Dragon language while other background text may be in the same format or in traditional Elder Futhark and/or Anglo-Frisian runes.

Language
How to Train Your Dragon (series)
Though none of the text in the series is in itself written in the Viking language, an alphabet has been found on the official website. It can be assumed that this alphabet is not used in the texts seen in books, such as the Last Will and Testament of Grimbeard the Ghastly because the books are stylized as being «translated» into English from Old Norse by Cressida Cowell, and actually written by Hiccup himself.

Appearances
How to Train Your Dragon (film)
The How to Train Your Dragon language characters, in contrast to traditional Elder Futhark and Anglo-Frisian runes, have to have been consisting of characters sharing identical symbols because of the lack of the letters «thorn» and other Old Norse digraphs. Some letters (such as a, f, h, l, m, n, and r) have their own symbol, others share symbols (such as b and p; c,k, and g; d and t; e and i; o, u, v, w, and y; s and z), others are unknown (such as q), and others don’t exist (such as x being in the form of «cs» or «ks»). The language also has a lack of punctuation. Symbols include:
Some other text in the movie is in traditional Elder Futhark or Anglo-Frisian runes.
Book of Dragons
In the exclusive short, Book of Dragons, the language that Vikings in Berk write with is shown when they are introducing the different dragon classes. Although, the language that is used in the movie is different than in the short. In the Book of Dragons, the traditional Elder Futhark runes are used.
Elder Futhark Alphabet
Compare the Elder Futhark Alphabet to the symbols in How to Train Your Dragon. The alphabet lacks the letters «C», «Q», «V», «X», and «Y».
The bolded links are identical to the symbols used in the film and the italicized text is somewhat similar to the language used in the film. The «Z» is actually identical to the letter «H» in the film.
The graph displays what symbols are identical to those of different runic scripts:
