3. Read the dialogue and complete the gaps 1-5 with questions from Ex. 2. Listen and check. —

4. Portfolio: Work in pairs. Imagine you are at a summer camp. Use questions from Ex. 2 to find out about your partner. Record yourselves.

5A. Read statements 1-6 about family relationships. Which one best describes your family situation? Give reasons.

My father’s views are rather old-fashioned. He thinks that modern teenagers should stay home and study all the time. He doesn’t like my friends and calls them blithering idiots. He can’t see any sense in modern music and night parties. He hates computers and other electronic gadgets because they harm our health. But he loves me very much. We hanging out a lot with my father. We run in the wood in summer and ski in winter together. We spend much time crafting something useful together. We watch sports on TV together and cheer for the same hockey club. And he teaches me to drive our car. I love him very much in spite of his old-fashioned views.

I enjoy hanging out with my grandparents. I like to go and stay with them during the holidays. Grandma likes to chat about absolutely everything. I admire going out for long walks with her and their dog. Grandma is a really good cook. She makes excellent cakes! Besides that, she is a very optimistic and reliable person. I trust her a lot and share my problems. Grandpa is very good at fixing things. He fixed my bike and I am really pleased! I try to learn patience and self-confidence from him.

5B. Listen to some teenagers talking on a radio programme about their relationships with their family. Put statements (1-6) from Ex. 5A under the correct speaker (A-E). There is one extra statement.

Interviewer: I spoke to some young people to find out about their relationship with their families. Here’s what they said.

Speaker A: I often feel lonely at home. Both my parents work so I spend a lot of time alone. It’s not that I don’t have anything to do but I’m desperate for some company. If I had a brother or a sister, my life would be a lot different.

Speaker B: Many of my friends complain about their parents being old-fashioned and strict. Luckily, I don’t have such problems at home. I can discuss anything that troubles me with my parents without being afraid that they will criticise me.

Speaker C: I live with my parents, my two sisters and brother and my grandparents. I never feel bored or lonely at home but I sometimes wish I could do my own thing without being interrupted by anyone.

Speaker D: I believe old people are great company. You can learn a lot from them about the past and they can give you useful advice about the present. I enjoy spending time with my grandparents and I visit them regularly for lunch.

Speaker E: I find communicating with my parents almost impossible. Dinnertime is the only opportunity for us to see each other and discuss things but we always end up fighting over something. They seem incapable of seeing things from my point of view.
