How can i consult

Consult VS Consult with

Can you guys help me out with the correct usage of «To consult»? Very often, I’ve seen people using «to consult with someone or something.» If you could please give me some examples, that would be great. Please advise.

1 Answer 1

The only time you consult with someone is when you’re seeking advice from a person (not a book or internet article), and you’re looking for general information. Any time you say «consult with», you can use «consult» instead. Using «consult» sounds more direct, which is why it’s used when you’re looking for very specific information. Here’re a few examples:

I should consult with my lawyer before I decide whether or not to buy this house

You’re looking for general information, as you don’t have a specific question about the house that will convince you to buy it or not.

After I consult my lawyer to see if I have a case, I will take you to court!

You are asking your lawyer «do I have a case if this happened», which means you’re looking for specific information

I can’t think of any words that begin with X, let me consult a dictionary

You’re looking for general information, but it’s not from a person. You would never consult with a dictionary because that sounds like you’d have a conversation with it.

Please consult with your doctor before you worry too much about that infection

The infection could be anything, so you’re consulting with your doctor (general information). If you thought it might be malaria, you’d consult your doctor (specific information).

Consult your doctor if there are any immediate side affects

This sounds like you’re asking for general information (I have side effects, what does that mean?) but saying consult instead of consult with sounds more direct and urgent. This is an order, «consult your doctor now!» instead of «consult with your doctor the next time you see him».

Consult with/to/on/about? What is the correct preposition with the verb consult?

“To consult” can use no preposition or the preposition “with”. The prepositions on and about are also common in spoken English.

Consult + no preposition

We don’t need a preposition when the meaning of “consult” is similar to “check” or “refer”.

We are looking for information from a book or store of information like a database.

You need to consult your dictionary.

Can you consult your records to see if we have any information about him?

Consult + with

“Consult with” can be used in the above situations but it can also be used with people.

“Consult with” often implies that there is more of an exchange of information similar to “confer”.

“To confer” means to discuss with your team and find an answer between you whereas “to consult with” often means that your teammates have more knowledge than you.

For that reason, we use “consult with” often with experts in certain fields such as doctors, lawyers, and financial advisors.

You need to consult with your financial advisor before buying cryptocurrency.

You should consult with your doctor before trying any new supplements.

Consult or consult with difference

In my experience, most people use both “consult” and “consult with” interchangeably.

Sometimes I notice people are more likely to say “consult a doctor” when the problem is more serious and we more or less know what the problem is.

I hear “consult with a doctor” when people are at the beginning of the information-finding journey and the problem can be a little bit more difficult to define. There is often less certainty about the problem.

You should consult a doctor right away.

Maybe you should consult with a doctor….

In the first example, the symptoms could include pain in your right side or feeling faint.

In the second example, maybe the symptoms could include a stomach ache or a headache.

Consult + to(doctor)

“Consult to” is not common in English. If you are talking about consulting with a doctor, it is better to use the preposition “with” or no preposition.

You need to consult a doctor

You should consult with your doctor.

Consult on or about

“On” and “about” do not work as dependent prepositions(they are not bound to “consult”).

On and about are often common in sentences but function as a regular preposition(connect one part of the sentence to the other).

In this case “on” and “about” connect the verb “consult” to the topic of knowledge that we wish to obtain.

You need to consult somebody about that mole.

I was never consulted on your decision to leave the firm.

Необходимо указать с кем вы собираетесь советоваться — “I must consult somebody (a specialist)” – «Я должен проконсультироваться с кем-либо (со специалистом)». Можно также получить информацию из словаря, энциклопедии или другого источника – to consult an encyclopedia, a dictionary.

Запомните, что то лицо или источник, с которым вы советуетесь, всегда в предложении занимает место после слова “consult”. А если вы указываете, о чем вы хотели бы получить информацию, используйте предлог about или for.

2. Второе значение использования глагола «consult» в сочетании с предлогом with — «обсуждать что-то для принятия решения». В данном случае глагол “consult” является непереходным, а это означает, что между ним и предлогом with нечего вписать, поэтому такое предложение как «Я советовался с врачом несколько раз, прежде чем купил лекарство» мы переведем на английский язык следующим образом – “I consulted with a doctor several times before buying the medicine”.

3. И, наконец, последним значением глагола “consult” является «выступать в роли консультанта». В этом случае этот глагол также является непереходным. За ним может следовать предлог for.

How can i consult

The verb “consult” has three different meanings and accordingly behaves in three different ways. It is important to ensure your grammar and sentence structure match the meaning you intend.

1. “Consult” usually means “to seek advice or information”. It is a transitive verb, which means it needs an object (i.e. you have to consult somebody or something).

RIGHT
Would the employer be obliged to consult the employee representatives before reducing pay?

Always put the person or thing being consulted after the word “consult”:

WRONG
We recommend consulting the transaction with the works council.
RIGHT
We recommend consulting the works council about the transaction.

In sentences like this, consult with is incorrect. Instead use about or for.

You consult some body about …
E.g.: The employer must consult the employee representatives about reducing pay.

You consult some thing for …
E.g.: He consulted the company website for information on internships.

WRONG

RIGHT

WRONG
If TOP Retail consults the transaction with the employee representatives from GoAuto only it may be viewed that it did not follow the consultation procedure properly.
RIGHT
If TOP Retail consults only the employee representatives from GoAuto about the transaction it may be viewed that it did not follow the consultation procedure properly.

In this example the word “only” has also been moved to keep the sense of the sentence.
