Actually I don’t do anything special to stay healthy during the Russian winters. I just try to dress warmer and spend less time outside. A healthy lifestyle for me includes doing sport at least twice a week and avoiding unhealthy food. If I fall ill I usually ask my friends for help to catch up with the missing material.

It’s great that your cousin is going to visit you for Thanksgiving. How old is she? Where does your cousin live? What do you usually do together?

How To Catch-Up In A Class After Falling Behind

Have you ever needed to catch up in a class after you’ve fallen behind?

You miss a day or two of class because you were sick, there was bad weather, or you were out of town (you could have just been tired, but that’s not as good as an excuse). Then, you show up the next week to class and are overwhelmed.

You feel so far behind that you think your only option is to drop the class and start over next semester. You justify dropping the class because it’s better than getting a D, and you don’t consider stepping it up to get a good grade.

But, the decision to drop a class brings many other potential problems. You probably will have to take extra credits the next semester, which will make for a difficult and potentially stressful time. Or a worse case is, you need to graduate a semester or two later because you dropped classes and didn’t make them up in time. That’s more tuition money and unnecessary frustration.

So, I believe the better option is to call what happened a loss, and then stay in the class to makeup work, and turn it around to achieve a good grade.

Action Plan To Makeup For Lost Time

To be completely honest, I haven’t been in this situation many times, if any. But, I know these strategies work in general, and I’m confident they can help you if you missed class and need to makeup work to get back on pace.

First and most important, is that you have a positive attitude through this process. Give yourself some slack about missing class, and then move forward. If you drown in your sadness, then you won’t be motivated to do the next steps.

You’ll want to make a checklist on a loose leaf paper that has all the assignments, notes, etc. that you missed. Then write out these activities in your planner. The act of dividing tasks by individual days will make it easier to focus on each activity and your makeup work will seem smaller than it is, which is what we are looking for.

It’s a good idea to ask your classmates what you missed, so you can pick up on the big news, if you don’t already know. (This is why it helps to make friends in the class.) But don’t stop there, because classmates aren’t as likely to know the smaller, important details as your teacher.

Next, go to your teacher’s office hours. Be honest and explain why you missed class. Then say you’re working hard to get back on schedule, and would like to know if you missed any important news.

Most times they will appreciate your effort to come into office hours and your honesty, because it shows you care. Also, if you can communicate that you care about your GPA, then it puts the thought in your teacher’s mind that you want a high grade. This can be helpful later.

If you find it hard to get started on the makeup work in a logical order, then do some small tasks that will build momentum until you’re ready to be productive. The act of starting can get you positively sidetracked on the task, instead of wasting time thinking about how long it will take.

If you’ve missed class, then hopefully your professor didn’t mark attendance or give a quiz. If you had bad luck and this happened, then it’s likely that you missed out on one or two percentage points of your grade at the most. To catch-up in strong fashion, start preparing for the biggest weighted grade, at least a week in advance. The most weighted grade is usually anywhere from 10-30% of the final grade. So, it’s worth at least five times, and sometimes 10 times, as much as the attendance or pop quiz you may have missed.

You can use the small losses as motivation to do well and get a big win in the class by excelling on the large exam. Follow the Chip Away Strategy, use focused preparation, and avoid dumb exam mistakes to ace the next exam.

Then you’ll put yourself in position to get a high-grade regardless of your bad start.

During this catching-up process, please don’t miss current assignments and get behind on those, because that defeats the purpose. Yes, it’s going to be difficult to do last week’s work and this week’s work, but that’s the situation you are in. Put in an extra hour a day until you’re caught up, and you’ll be thankful.

Rethink The Idea Of Class

Although it’s too late at this point if you’ve already missed class, you can learn how to rethink the value of class for next time you consider skipping.

Going to class is practicing responsibility for your future work and career. By scheduling a class, you’re committing yourself to have your butt on a seat at that time, everyday it meets. Besides rare circumstances, it’s your word that you’ll be there, and there’s a saying that nothing is more important than your word.

Also, think about it this way: how are you going to get into the office at 7:45 am everyday if you are struggling to make it to your Tuesday, Thursday 10:00 am class? Spending 80 minutes in class is less painful than missing class, only to later spend 120 minutes trying to contact the teacher, other classmates, and get caught up.

If the professor hasn’t seen you in class on regular occurrences, it’s going to be hard in office hours or emails to convince your teacher that you’re putting in necessary effort. Now, your teacher is less likely to be helpful and you could lose the benefit of the doubt (possibly when it comes to borderline grades, too).

Almost no one thinks of this, but going to class provides many learning opportunities from your peers. Listen as they ask questions, and engage in discussion with a different perspective than yours. Odds are, listening and interacting will help you formulate your thoughts and grasp the content better. You’ll be thankful when you thought you were right about a topic, but obnoxious Joe in the front helped you understand that you were wrong. Now, you have that bonus information for the exam.

Speaking of the exam, teachers are known to give little tidbits of information in class (many times at the end) that helps your exam preparation. If you’re not there, how are you going to hear that? It’s not on the notes or Powerpoint. And your friend is probably not going to remember to tell you.

We’ve all been there. You look at your university schedule or your next assignment date and you realise how behind you are. What are your options? How are you supposed to catch up on your studies?

1. How important is the assignment?

Work out if your panic is deserved. How heavily is your assignment weighted? If it’s worth 10% of the marks but your others are worth 30-40% then a lower grade may not be as catastrophic as you think. Also see if your university uses substitution for any of your assignments. This is where your lowest mark is increased to bring it more in line with the average of your other marks. Understanding the importance of each assignment will help you work out which of the below strategies you need to catch up on your studies.

2. If necessary, ask for an extension

If you’ve tried to catch up on your studies but you don’t think you’ll be able to complete an assignment on time, consider asking for an extension. Before you contact your tutor have an idea of how long an extension you will need and what your plan is to meet the new deadline. If you can explain why you’ve fallen behind but also how you’re going to fix it then your tutor will hopefully grant you a small extension. It doesn’t have to be long but even a day or two can really help to reduce the panic and help you submit something you’re proud of.

3. Seek support for tough concepts

Did you fall behind because you struggled to understand the materials? Never be afraid to ask for help. Asking for help can feel like a sign of weakness but if it moves you forward this can only be a good thing. Ask for a quick meeting or phone call with your tutor to go through a difficult concept. They might be able to give you new techniques or point you in the direction of helpful resources.

4. Seek further support if you feel helpless

We all experience times when studying gets on top of us and we consider quitting. But if you’re seriously considering giving up seek further support first. Contact your tutor or your university’s student support team. They should be able to talk you through your options as you might be able to defer your module and continue in a few months, or take a break from studying to refresh yourself before going back.

5. Prioritise your tasks using the 4Ds

To catch up on your studies you might need to rethink completing everything on that long to do list. A simple way to prioritise what’s important is to use the 4Ds system. Take your to do list, or make one with everything you think you need to do. Make sure every area of your life is included not just studying. Then try to put each item into one of the four categories.

If the task is really important or it won’t take long then just DO IT now.

There’s a chance you could DELEGATE the task. Could you ask your partner or housemate to make dinner this week so you can write your essay? Or sign up for one of those meal prep delivery services for a week or two to take the pressure off. Could you order your shopping online or ask a friend to run some of your errands for you? If money allows, could you get a cleaner in so you can cross off the cleaning tasks on your list?

6. Prioritise the important material

If you’re behind on your reading and have an assignment coming up, prioritise what’s needed. Your guidance might tell you which readings or which book pages are the most important for the assignment. If not, contact your tutor and ask them which sections you should focus your time on. Get that reading done as quick as you can then start the assignment. If you’ve got time, skim the sections you’ve missed for any other relevant points you could add as you edit your work.

7. Try to free up some time

In order to catch up on your studies, you might need to reconsider your other commitments. Look at your diary or calendar for the next few weeks and see if you can free up any space. Could you take a day off work to catch up or work from home a few days (if you’re allowed) to save your commuting time? Do you have any social plans you could rearrange or change slightly so they’re shorter or closer to home? Could your friends or family help a little with the housework or childcare?

To catch up on your studies you HAVE to create more time. Commit to finding a few ways you can create space in your schedule.

8. Forgive yourself

It’s important to not spend time feeling guilty about falling behind. It’s normal to stray off track every so often in your studies, especially if you have lots of other responsibilities.

Psychology Professor Michael Wohl conducted a study and found students who forgave themselves for any past procrastination were less likely to waste time again in the future.

Accept you’ve fallen behind but then move on. Believe you can and will catch up on your studies.

9. Don’t forget to take breaks

When you’re behind it might feel like you don’t have time to even pee let alone take breaks. But it’s often more productive to work in short bursts with little breaks then chain yourself to your desk all day.

The Pomodoro technique just works. Study with absolute focus for 25 minutes. No distractions, no going on your phone, no justtt having a quick look for a new book on Amazon. Crack on and get the work done for 25 minutes and then you can take a 5-minute break. Repeat this 3 times then take a longer break.

Now, I’d recommend adapting this ratio if you’re feeling so overwhelmed by your workload you don’t know how or where to start. You could work for 30 minutes then take a 15-minute break. As long as you work your butt off for those 30 minutes you’ll achieve lots.

You have received a letter from your English-speaking pen-friend Jack who writes:

. This year we started learning French. I think it’s fun. I can already use some simple phrases. I like the melody of the language, but it’s quite difficult to pronounce some sounds. Is English the only foreign language that pupils learn in Russia or can you choose other foreign languages? Is it fun to learn a foreign language for you? How do you plan to use it in the future?

By the way, I was elected to our School Government and hope to get the position of the Minister of Sports.

Write a letter to Jack. In your letter answer her questions, ask 3 questions about the rights and responsibilities of members of the School Government. Write 100—140 words. Remember the rules of letter writing. You have 20 minutes to do this task.
