Barney Stinson
Character Analysis
Grew Up… in Staten Island with his single mother, Loretta, and his older brother, James. Both Barney and James pestered their mother about why they had different skin colors and who their fathers were, but she would simply change the subject. Eventually she told Barney that his father was “The Price is Right” host Bob Barker, something Barney believed well into adulthood. Despite his lack of a father, he had a relatively happy childhood.
Living… in “The Fortress of Barnitude” on East 84th Street and 3rd Avenue in Manhattan, equipped with two bedrooms (one for his suits) and two 300-inch flat screen TVs, as well as several booby traps in order to eject women from his apartment if they desire to spend the night. Still, Barney spends most of his time at McLaren’s Pub. That’s where he picks up women and hangs out with his best friend Ted – at least Barney is convinced they’re best friends – and the rest of their gang, which includes Canadian-born TV host Robin and married couple Marshall and Lily.
Profession… who knows? Whenever’s he’s asked what he does, Barney just laughs and says, “Please!” as if the answer should be obvious. What is clear is that Barney makes a lot of money and is quite powerful within his company, AltruCell.
Relationship Status… single or taken or widowed or divorced, whatever it takes to seduce a woman. Using an elaborate system he’s codified in “The Playbook,” Barney creates a different persona for every woman he meets and goes to extraordinary lengths to get her to sleep with him.
Challenge… commitment. Having been hurt as a young man, Barney vowed to become a womanizer in order to never feel that way again: “When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead.” By avoiding any emotional attachment to women, he can avoid getting his heart broken. But in the end, is such a shallow existence one worth living?
Personality… charming, charismatic, and caddish. Barney can be a selfish pleasure-seeker, and he’s probably not a guy you’d want dating your sister. But somehow everything’s just more fun when Barney is around. He genuinely cares about his friends and when it comes down to the important stuff, he’d do anything for them. In his words, “Think of me like Yoda, but instead of being little and green I wear suits and I’m awesome. I’m your bro – I’m Broda!”

How I Met Your Mother: Barney Stinson’s Mysterious Job Explained
The details surrounding Barney’s job was one of the longest-running jokes in How I Met Your Mother. Here’s the story behind his mysterious career.
The mystery behind Barney’s job stood as a long-running joke during How I Met Your Mother‘s nine seasons. It was assumed that Barney did quite well for a living, considering his life of luxury. He wore expensive suits and was able to pay for an upscale apartment in New York City at a relatively young age. When his friends questioned what he did for a living, Barney would dismiss their questioning by saying, «please. «, each and every time. It would later turn out that Barney’s response was actually an answer.
There were a number of clues that hinted at Barney’s career throughout How I Met Your Mother. He was clearly a high-ranking member of the corporation he worked for due to his prominent office. Barney was employed by AltruCell Corporation before it merged with Goliath National Bank (GNB). He even helped Marshall get a job as a lawyer within the company and served as the head of the search committee when he hired Ted to design the new headquarters. GNB was known to be highly corrupt and there was ample evidence that Barney took part in many of the illegal activities. By the end of the series, it was revealed that Barney did indeed know about the company’s corrupt dealing, but he was acting as an informant to take down his boss.
Barney Worked With The FBI To Get Revenge On His Boss
Before the gang met Barney, he worked in a coffee shop and was in a serious relationship with a woman named Shannon. His girlfriend eventually left him for Greg, a business executive. This caused Barney to change his lifestyle and he became a «suit.» In the season 9 episode, «Unpause,» it was revealed that Greg felt bad about the situation so he gave Barney a job at AltruCell (before it became GNB) and the position was titled Provide Legal Exculpation And Sign Everything. Yes, the job’s acronym was P.L.E.A.S.E., which explained Barney’s remark every time his friends asked him about his career. The job also made him a scapegoat for all of the illegal activities going on at GNB, but Barney had the upper hand on Greg the entire time.
Barney vowed revenge on the man who once stole his girlfriend. He worked as an FBI informant for the long-term and tipped off the federal government about all of the corruption happening under GNB’s roof. Two months after Greg’s wedding, Barney revealed everything, resulting in the man’s arrest for fraud and other crimes. Barney ultimately stayed with the company in his P.L.E.A.S.E. position while his connection to the feds remained hidden. According to Future Ted in How I Met Your Mother, Barney kept making «craploads» of money.

Любимый многими сериал, который все еще пользуется нешуточной популярностью all over the world. C’mon! It’s on!
That’s no joke, we assure you!
Well, hope dies last!

How I Met Your Mother: Barney & Robin’s Relationship Timeline, Season By Season
Barney and Robin may not have had their perfect happy ending, but they had an amazing love story along the way.
Barney and Robin may not start out with a whole lot of romantic potential, but they become one of the most important couples in the series by the end of How I Met Your Mother. In fact, seasons 7 and 8 flash-forwards are to their wedding day, and the entirety of season 9 is about their wedding too. In many ways, this makes this the biggest relationship of the series, and many fans expected them to be endgame.
Despite the importance of their relationship, though, they had quite a few ups and downs (and love triangles involving Ted) along the way. From those first flirtations to actually dating to the wedding day, this is how their relationship breaks down by season. (Because so much of the series takes place in flash forwards, the main storyline is the focus, though major moments in flashforwards are also included).
For the first two seasons of the series, the focus is on Ted and Robin, and Ted and Barney are happily just friends. For most of season two, in fact, Robin and Ted are in a happy relationship, so there’s no space for her and Barney to have anything more than a friendship together.
By season 3, Robin and Ted have broken up, but they are both still struggling to get over their relationship. Barney, meanwhile, has clearly started to have feelings for Robin. He starts noticing her more, complimenting her more, and when she comes up in conversation, he is noticeably flustered and complimentary.
Then, in ‘Sandcastles In The Sand’, Barney and Robin are drinking and watching her music video over and over, as he comforts her. This then leads to them sleeping together, for the first time in the series. However, this then causes a huge rift between Ted and Barney, due to Ted and Robin’s history, and the two do not reconnect as a result.
By season 4, it’s obvious that Barney is head over heels for Robin, but she doesn’t feel the same for most of the season. He tells Lily about his feelings himself, though, and Ted later figures it out after Barney becomes incredibly upset about Ted and Robin’s new ‘friends with benefits’ arrangement. (Ted then ends the arrangement as a result.) Over the course of the season, Barney’s love for Robin is shown growing, and slowly, Robin starts to have feelings for Barney too, but they are both hesitant to start something at this point. By the end of the season though, they have kissed, and it’s clear that they are about to take ‘The Leap’.
By season 6, things start to balance out for Robin and Barney, although there are definitely still hints that they have feelings for each other. Barney is visibly aware of Robin’s feelings, and the two do talk about their relationship more than once over the course of the season, always positively.
Barney reassures her when Robin worries that men don’t feel ‘needed’ with her, and in the end, when Barney asks out Nora, Robin is seen looking sad. They may not be actively back together at this point, but it’s definitely hinted that they will be again in the future.
In season 7, things start to shift, as Robin is now the one with unrequited feelings for Barney, in direct contrast to earlier seasons. For a while, it seems as though she will move on, though, as Barnet is with Nora, and Robin herself gets together with Kevin. However, in ‘Disaster Averted’ and ‘Tick Tick Tick’, their feelings for each other come out, and they end up cheating on their partners with each other. Barney then breaks up with Nora in order to get back together with Robin, but Robin stays with Kevin, and Barney is heartbroken. Later on, though, when Robin and Kevin call it quits, Barney ends up with Quinn, and a memorable speech from the season is all about relationships needing ‘chemistry and timing’. Robin and Barney are clearly failing on the timing, until a flash forward at the end of the finale shows that Robin is Barney’s bride.
Season 8 does a lot of bouncing back and forth between the main storyline and flash-forwards to Robin and Barney’s wedding (and the run up to it), so it’s safe to say that they are the focus of the series by this point! However, at the start of this season, Barney is still with Quinn. Eventually, their engagement falls apart, and Robin ends up pursuing Barney, but he pretends to be in a relationship with Robin’s hated coworker, Patrice. In the end, of course, it’s all revealed to be a big play. the last play that Barney will ever run. It’s this season that he proposes, and Robin (surprisingly, to some) accepts. From there, they become a great couple, and seem to have left their major issues behind them.

In the year 2030, Ted Mosby recounts to his kids the story of how he and their mother met and fell in love. Although each episode is ostensibly an important step on the way to Ted meeting «The Mother,» it seems Ted is the kind of person who uses this basic premise as an excuse to ramble off onto hundreds of other, completely unrelated anecdotes. For nine seasons’ worth of episodes, Ted discusses the modern-day in a nostalgic way and describes the strong bond between Ted and his group of friends.
In the year 2005, Ted (Josh Radnor) is an architect living in New York with his best friend, aspiring lawyer Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel). When Marshall announces that he is getting engaged to his college sweetheart, Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan), it prompts Ted to take an introspective look at his life and decide that he is finally ready to settle down and start searching for «The One,» much to the disgust of his other «friend» and serial womanizer Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris).
Enter Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders), a TV news reporter from Canada with whom Ted falls in love at first sight and manages to scare off just as quickly. Though she is affirmatively not the destined Mother of Ted’s future children, she befriends Lily and goes on to become an integral part of the group. Over the next decade, the five friends struggle with romance, careers, lost dreams and lives that did not turn out the way they expected, but in retrospect led them all to the ending they hoped for.
This sitcom uses its Framing Device and narrator (Bob Saget, uncredited) to surprisingly good effect, admitting to parts where the narrator honestly had no first-hand recollection of the events, doing very swift flashbacks to build up to a punchline or events are recalled out-of-order in order to create twists and surprises that achieve maximum impact (every method can be seen in the memorable episode «The Pineapple Incident»). In other episodes, the framing device allows Ted to retell stories involving foul curse words or drugs by substituting each with an Unusual Euphemism for his children’s benefit.
The show at first feels very similar to a regular sitcom but is actually a mixture of both single camera and three cameras. There is extensive outdoor location filming in addition to the regular sitcom-style sets. The narrative gimmick gives the show an edge in allowing them to portray a fairly complex universe of seemingly unimportant events and myriad callbacks. The show went 9 seasons, covering the years 2005-2013. The first eight seasons were contemporary and in approximate Real Time. The last season centered around the weekend Ted and the Mother met, although utilizing plenty of the show’s standard Anachronic Order of events.
A spinoff named How I Met Your Dad was announced as a gender-flipped version of the show in the fall of 2013, following unrelated characters and produced by the same people. A pilot was shot but was not picked up, and the project spent many years in Development Hell before finally receiving a straight-to-series order from Hulu in 2021, now titled How I Met Your Father and starring Hilary Duff.
