How Many Champions are in League of Legends?
League of Legends is a complex and strategic multiplayer game. At the start of each game, players take turns selecting champions to command that round. There are many champions to choose from in League of Legends. They range from agile assassins to huge, fearless warriors and everything in between. You can even fight as a tree or as a shape-shifting dragon.
You may be wondering how many champions are in League of Legends. There are currently 158 champions in League of Legends right now. Not only are there a large number of champions, but there are also a large variety of heroes.
With two teams of 5 different champions, there are over 3.7 X 10 21 total number of possible team-vs-team matchups. Furthermore, many of the champs in League of Legends can each play multiple positions and roles. It would take everyone on earth more than 20 million years of playing LoL non-stop in 30-minute games to try out every combination. There are far more champion matchups that have never been played than have ever been played or will ever be played! There are A LOT of LoL Champions already in the game, and Riot Games is always adding new and exciting champions to the mix.
How Many Champions are in League of Legends of Each Class
Each champion has a unique look and feel. Broadly speaking, champions in League of Legends fall into one of five categories: 1) assassins, 2) brawlers, 3) tanks, 4) mages, and 5) marksmen. Within each of these classes, though, there is a lot of variety.
It is hard to classify each champion to exactly one category, so we’ll be approximate here. Some champions are very versatile and can be played several ways. If you disagree with any particular categorization, that’s fine.
We’ve tried our best to broadly categorize each based on what positions it most commonly plays and what items it is best suited to use. If you would like to dig deeper into the best way to build a specific champion, check out our champion builds. We publish them weekly using real summary data from the millions of LoL matches we mine each week. We help you find out which items and runes work best for which champions at each level and versus each different enemy team composition.
Number of LoL Champions that are Assassins
The goal of an assassin is to deal a tremendous amount of damage very quickly, ideally taking out the enemy team’s best champions before retreating to safety.
The goal of an assassin is to deal a tremendous amount of damage very quickly, ideally taking out the enemy team’s best champions before retreating to safety.
There are 22 champions in League of Legends that are assassins. These range from the very obvious assassin Shaco (who disappears, jumps behind enemies, and stabs them) to the borderline assassin, Qiyana, who some may consider more of a mage. Assassins are the smallest champion category by the number of champions. However, each is very potent.

How Many Champions are in League of Legends that are Brawlers/Fighters
There are 36 brawlers and fighters in LoL. These champions do considerable damage and are also able to take some damage without dying, unlike assassins, who are more often glass cannons. On brawlers and fighters, it is usually a good idea to build both damage dealing and defensive items. Here is the list of League of Legends champions that are brawlers and fighters:
In LoL, tanks don’t only fill the role of being able to soak up as much damage as possible. They often have substantial crowd control or damage-dealing abilities that make them important targets for the enemy team to consider. If tanks did nothing but soak up damage, they would be ignored by the opposing team during team fights and would therefore be useless. Many tank abilities scale with armor or max health.
There are currently 28 tank champions in League of Legends. The full list of LoL champions that are tanks includes:
There are Many Mage Champions in LoL
In LoL, there are both damage-dealing mages and controller/support mages. We’ve grouped both into one category here, as there is a lot of overlap between the two. Mages utilize their abilities over their physical attacks to turn the tide of battle.

How Many Champion in League of Legends are Marksmen
Marksmen champions usually fill the ad carry role, where they must accumulate enough gold as quickly as possible to carry their team to victory in the mid-to-late game. Like assassin champions in LoL, marksmen deal massive damage very quickly; however, unlike assassins, they deal their damage from a distance. Marksmen are usually glass cannons; however, with life steal and other sustain items, they can be made much more resilient to damage. Number of Champions that are Assassins
Personally, we love playing as an assassin, because they can deal a nice amount of damage in no time at all. When you play a champion and know how to use the combos, taking out another player isn’t hard. Right now, there are a total of 21 assassins in League of Legends.

How Many Champions exist in League of Legends
Riot Games has been releasing new champions in League of Legends for the past 12 years. Let’s take a look at how many champions LoL has today.
League of Legends’ champion roster has only been expanding since the release of the original 17-character lineup that was introduced during the game’s beta stage. Today, there are so many champions that it’s difficult just to browse through them without forgetting half the names of the characters if you were asked to enumerate all of them in one go. Let’s take a look at how many champions LoL has introduced so far.
How Many Champions Are in LoL?
As of February 17, 2022, the total number of League of Legends champions in the game amount to 159 unique characters. The latest champion to be released in the game was Renata Glasc. Riot Games is finally approaching the 160 mark after almost three years of staying at 150+ champions. Whether you’re a new player looking for beginner-friendly champions or a veteran looking to widen their champion pool, the game has everything you need to enjoy playing on Summoners Rift.
The number of champions in League of Legends is also the same as that in Teamfight Tactics, with the exception of Silco since he’s only exclusive to this game mode. With this number, let’s take a look at all of the champions with their release date arranged in alphabetical order.В
How Riot Games Introduces New Champions
Riot Games introduces around 2-6 champions per year to add refreshment to the ever-growing champion roster. Whether you play these champions, have them on your team, or get them as your enemy, it’s still exciting to see so many unique models fit into the world of Runeterra and have a diverse set of abilities that build their individual characters. Even the number of original skins that each of these champions has is mind-blowing if you consider the fact that they also release a number of cosmetics every few months.
The way League of Legends introduces new champions to the league is by following the formula of rotating a champion belonging that’s designed to a specific role. Even though many champions end up not being used in the role they were intended to have, these champions still find ways to be relevant in the game. League of Legends champions are also expected to match the lore in their overall design, so they will always belong to one region or be an unknown enemy from another location.
About the League of Legends Champions
All the League of Legends champions play a main role in respective story arcs involving the world of Runeterra. There are champions that play a bigger role than some while others have few storylines but still leave a lasting impression on the players. Character stories are important because they determine which champions are considered an ally of justice or enemy of the world. Regardless, it’s up to the player how they interpret each storyline.
Many champions also come with different aesthetics, with some skinlines having unique lore backgrounds surrounding them. Whether you’re looking for cheap skins or cosmetics that showcase the hottest characters in the game, you’re in for a real treat because Riot Games has made it so that everyone can appreciate these characters the way they want to.
How Many Champions are in League of Legends Currently?
League of Legends has been one of the most popular games in the world for the last decade. It has one of the most vibrant esports scenes in the world along with one of the biggest player bases. One of the major reasons why is that while the base game mostly stays the same, it is in essence a living game. It is always changing as Riot Games tries to keep things fresh. One of the best ways to do this is to add content and in League of Legends, which normally means adding new champions.
Note: This list will update as new champions are released.
On release, League of Legends had 40 different champions to choose from. This meant in essence that each role had eight to choose from. As the game has progressed Riot Games has continued to add new characters and champions to fill out different roles and possibilities. With that, there have been some big benchmarks.
The first new champion at 41 was Udyr. Then champion 50 was the iconic Garen. At 100 was another classic champion, Draven. For the last major milestone thus far, Yone, the brother of the infamous Yasuo was number 150.
The last champion, who just released recently was Vex (The Gloomy Yordle). She is champion number 157 which is the current amount of champions in the game. Riot has revealed that they plan on releasing six new champions every year for at least the next few years. This means that champion 200 is at least another eight years away should they decide to go that far.
