I read on this forum that it is better to ask «What is in your town» than «What is there in your town.»

Your original question was «Do we still need to keep the word «there» in the question?».

PS Maybe you’re familiar with French «Il y a», German «Es gibt/Es ist», Italian «C’è/ci sono», Spanish «Hay». All of these are used to state that a certain thing/person, etc. exists.

I would say in American English, «there» is not necessary. As a more sensical example, compare these two statements:
«What kind of food is in the refrigerator?»
«What kind of food is there in the refrigerator?»
This seems to be one of those extraneous uses of prepositions in English, such as in the sentence «Where are you going to?» even though «Where are you going?» will suffice.
In summary, both are grammatically sound, though in American English, it’s more common not to use the «there».

Maybe I’m splitting hairs but my impression was that «What kind of food is in the refrigerator?» would be appropriate in case I knew about the existence of food in the fridge but didn’t know its nature, while «What kind of food is there in the refrigerator?» would be appropriate also in case I had no idea about the existence of any food in it?

If you have no idea, I would say «Is there any food in the refrigerator?»
If you think there might be food but are not sure, I would say «What kind of food, if any, is in the refrigerator?»
In America «What kind of food is in the refrigerator?» has the exact same meaning as «What kind of food is there in the refrigerator?» There’s no difference between them that I have experienced or am aware of. Perhaps it is different outside the States, though.

But I can’t imagine ever saying «What rooms are [there] in your house?»
PaulQ

Well you can, but you would be the only person asking the question in that way. The information that you want is the type of room and the number of each type
The conversation goes like this, it is almost a ritual:
A: «How many rooms does the house have?»
B: «Well, there are four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room, a dining room, and a kitchen. Oh, and downstairs there’s a walk-in cloakroom, but it’s not that big.»

This is true, and is more a matter of culture than linguistics. It’s just a really strange question to ask in any format.
«What rooms do you have in your house?»
«What kinds of rooms are in your house?»
«What are the room in your house?»
They’re all grammatically sound, but culturally odd questions. It’s pretty much expected for the person who owns the house (or at least has the information about it) to be the one to introduce the types of rooms.
The best way to coax out this information is simply to ask about the total number of rooms, as PaulQ suggested, or to ask about each type of room individually:
«How many bedrooms are there?»
«How many bathrooms are there?»
«Is there a study?»
This may indicate to the listener that you’re interested in knowing about all the rooms in the house, and they’ll give you the breakdown. Or, you may just get an (annoying) straightforward answer: «There are 3 bedrooms.»; «There are two bathrooms.»; «No, there is no study.» In this case, you can try to use the momentum of the conversation and continue with a generic question like «What else is there?»
I’d wager 98% of the time, the person will understand that you want to know what rooms are in the house and tell you. However, in that unlucky 2% where they’re just not catching on and respond with «What do you mean?», you can finally get right to the point:
«How many other rooms are in the house?»
«What other kinds of rooms are in the house?»
or express your exasperation: «You know! Bedrooms, kitchen, living room! What other kinds of rooms does this house have?»
. you probably won’t have to take it this far though, which is kind of the point being made by the above posts, lol.

I have just read a statement on the omission of «there» made by Skatinginbc. He said: » If you are still confused as to what a real omission of «there“ is, this is my two cents: There is no such thing.» He doesn’t think that the subject-is/are inversion, as used in literature, can be considered as an example of omission of «there». It is a completely different meaning of «is» (or «are» I believe). According to him «is» means the same as an equals sign (=). Is Skatinginbc wrong?
PaulQ

There is a difference between:
2. «There is a book that gives you all the answers.» here, ‘is’ is being used as «exists»
In 1. There is adjectival; in 2. it is a dummy subject. All sentences need a subject and there and it commonly serve where there is no obvious subject. (Cf «It is raining»)

Some grammar books say that actually the real subject is the noun which follows the structure «there is». They also say that «there» functions as an introductory subject.
As far as the meaning is concerned the word «is» in «there is» constructions (sentence #2) means «exist», in other uses it means an equals sign. Do you agree?

Thank you, kyrintethron, for your interesting post. In some questions you use the construction ‘there is/are’ and in others you don’t.
Would it be OK to use the impersonal subject «there» in these questions:
Дом и мебель
