OVERVIEW

Coming in Patch 3.7, Darkbolt Jonin is the fourth Yae Sakura battlesuit, as well as the first SP Valkyrie in Honkai. She is obtainable through regular farming and various in-game events, and therefore will be available to almost every player.

For the sake of simplicity, in many instances, I will be referring to her as Kasumi, which is the name she has been known for back in CN Beta days. No, I’m not calling her DJ.

SP Skills is a new mechanic introduced along with Kasumi. What this system means is, for every time you rank up Kasumi ( A Rank included), there will be a new skill available for acquire. Since these skills function identically to regular skills, I will include them in regular skill descriptions, with a purple mark indicating which rank a skill unlocks at.

Unlocks a kinetic energy gauge that maxes at 500, or 5 small bars. This gauge is required to perform Combo attack by Kasumi.

[ SSS-Rank SP skill] Zakti gauge’s capacity is increased to 600 (6 small bars). Kasumi starts a battle with 400 Zakti.

BASIC ATTACK

Kasumi performs a 4-sequence Basic Attacks, dealing a total of 350% of Melee Physical DMG, 530% of Lightning DMG and recovers a total of 8.5 SP. The 3rd and 4th attack gives Kasumi Interrupt Resist and 20% Damage Reduction, and the final hit paralyzes enemies for 0.5 second upon hit.

Following a small delay after the 3rd and 4th Basic Attack, you can tap the ATK button when a light circle appears for a special, alternative attack. Kasumi will jump to the air, throw a range of Kunais dealing 4×20% of Lightning DMG, and inflicts each enemy with a Darkbolt Mark on hit.
[S-Rank SP skill] Kasumi herself also gains 20% Total DMG for 11s by performing this attack.

Immediately after Darkbolt Pursuit, you can tap the ATK button to perform a Jonin Finisher (which deals 300% Lightning DMG, recovers 3 SP and 50 Zakti), or hold ATK to chain directly to her Combo Attacks.

An enemy with Darkbolt Mark takes 30% bonus total DMG. This fully stacks with Conductive debuffs, or stigma effects such as from Newton B. A Darkbolt Mark lasts for 10 seconds, and reapplying it on an enemy will reset its duration. It’s always recommended to mark enemies before launching Combo Attacks for maximum damage.
Along with the aforementioned Darkbolt Pursuit, you can also inflict Darkbolt Mark on enemies using Kasumi’s QTE.

When you have at least 1 bar of Zakti, tap and hold ATK to unleash a Naraka Finisher to enemies, dealing [ 100% + 50% ] of Lightning DMG against enemies in a small range. Each Naraka Finisher costs 1 bar of Zakti, and you can chain multiple Naraka Finishers by mashing ATK button as long as you have enough Zakti.

[SS-Rank SP skill] Naraka Finisher gains enhanced range and Attack speed, and each Finisher deals an additional 220% Lightning DMG.

Kasumi’s Ultimate attack has 2 phases. The first phase summons Rakshamaru, deals a total of 610% of Lightning DMG to a wide area in front, and provides Kasumi with an instant boost of Zakti.

Within 12 seconds after the initial cast, pressing the ULT button will perform Kasumi’s second Ultimate. This attack deals a total of 1400% of Lightning DMG, paralyzes enemies for 4s, but also takes quite some time to finish.

Similar to Memento, Kasumi’s Ultimate is considered a great way to refill her Zakti gauge for quick damage bursts. And keep in mind that both of her Ultimates are individual triggers, not a Burst mode.

Kasumi’s Ultimate Evasion creates a Shadow clone at her feet. The Shadow pulls in nearby enemies, then explodes after 3s to deal 400% Lightning DMG, and trigger a 3-second Time Fracture.

For 5s after a successful Evasion, Kasumi gains invincibility and increased Move speed. You can tap the ATK button to perform a Jonin Finisher, or hold ATK to chain directly to Naraka Finisher, her Combo Attacks.

QTE SKILL

Triggered off an Ignited enemy, this skill deals 400% of Lightning DMG, mark them with Darkbolt Marks, and paralyzes enemies for half a second.

In theory, it’s always recommended to enter the battle with QTE to maximize Kasumi’s damage. However, as there aren’t a lot of reliable Ignite sources in the game (easiest ones including Blood Rose’s Ultimate and 2-piece New Year set ), building around her QTE isn’t always the best idea.

PLAYSTYLE & OPTIMAL DAMAGE CYCLE

From the skill descriptions, it can be easily seen that Darkbolt Jonin shares a lot of similarity in terms of gameplay with the previous Yae Sakura battlesuits. Her Combo Attack resembles Miko’s Ultimate, her timing-reliant Darkbolt Pursuit a carbon copy of Flame Sakitama’s, and her switch-and-burst playstyle is clearly inherited from Memento.

For a team consists of Darkbolt Jonin, Molotov Cherry and Lightning Empress (LE), an example damage cycle could be:

WEAPON CHOICES

Mag-Typhoon is the best weapon for Kasumi in terms of raw damage, and no other weapons come close to it. This weapon straights up gives Kasumi 50% Lightning DMG, its Active Skill makes enemies take 25% more Lightning DMG, and being a PRI-ARM gives it unmatched stat bonuses compared to regular weapons. Kasumi cannot apply Conductive debuffs with it however, it’s a LE exclusive bonus.

Players below Lv.80 can equip MagStorm on Kasumi for its 40% Lightning DMG buff. Since it can be crafted through Bounty Mark, most players can get this weapon with minimal costs.

Scratch it, this is the best weapon for Kasumi. Say no more.

STIGMA BUILDS

Monet T and Goemon M-B is the best performing stigma build for Kasumi. This setup gives a maximum of 90% Lightning DMG and 65% Total DMG, with the highest bonuses being applicable for Combo Attacks performed right after Ultimate. You can replace Monet T with Shakespeare T in case you don’t have the full setup, or just the full Goemon set.

The full Monet set also works fine on Kasumi. This setup gives a maximum of 90% Lightning DMG, 15% Total DMG and 15% ATK Speed at 30 Combos and above. Replace Monet B with Newton B or Tesla Band B during boss fights.

Early-game players can use the Edison set for a 50% Lightning DMG buff, even if timing for the 50% Total DMG every 12 seconds can get a little bit tricky.

TEAM BUILDING

Phoenix and Lightning Empress (LE) are all perfect fits for Kasumi. Phoenix contributes supplementary damage, buffs elemental attack, and drops SP packs for her team; while Lightning Empress can cast Conductive debuffs that make enemies take a whopping 70% more Lightning DMG. This setup requires having 2 MAG-Typhoons to take full effect, one for LE and the other for Kasumi.

Any Blood Dance carrier can also greatly improve Kasumi’s performance, though I particularly recommend Rozaliya because she has innate Time Fracture and no intrusive Switch animations.

WHO SHOULD GET KASUMI?

Darkbolt Jonin is Mihoyo’s first experiment of a SP character, and while the SP mechanic leaves more to be desired (after all, it’s just a couple more skills that unlocks as the character ranks up), it is undeniable that Darkbolt Jonin is well-designed and very fun to play. As such, she is recommended for new and casual players, who liked the fast-paced playstyle of previous Yae Sakura battlesuits.

However, that’s not to say Kasumi is the perfect character. As of Patch 3.6, she is suffering from many glaring issues:

Due to the above reasons, her end-game competitive performance is below average. She can still achieve high Memorial scores under optimal setups, but she has very limited boss coverage and, in most cases, is totally overshadowed by HF.

However, that is not the end of the story. From the information in CN test server, Darkbolt Jonin is getting substantial buffs in Patch 3.7. Some most impactful buffs include:

Be mindful that since these numbers are from CN Test server, it’s likely to be changed in the Live version. However, if these buffs were to stick, things would look very optimistic for Kasumi in the upcoming patches. I still recommend all players to play and enjoy Kasumi’s Event stages, even if she isn’t a good competitive investment at the moment.

Darkbolt Jonin is a playable battlesuit in Honkai Impact 3rd based on Yae Kasumi, a Captainverse character, first featured in Sanka Saga event. With rather low HP, her combat style is more focused on QTE and quick-swaps than stable DPS.

Darkbolt Jonin was the first SP battlesuit introduced into the game, having an extra skill tree with a total of 3 subskills in it that can be unlocked at S, SS, and SSS rank respectively.

Once Raijin’s Blink is triggered, Darkbolt Jonin enters Blink status for 5s, during which she stays invisible and can sprint; while sprinting, her Jonin Finisher can be cast by tapping [ATK] to deal 6 x 50% ATK of AOE Lightning DMG. Jonin Finisher restores 60 Zakti energy and has an extra 3 SP upon hit.

The following data are at max skill level:

1. Extended the duration of Darkbolt Mark to 30s.

2. Skill [Biting Ember]: Extended the duration of Total DMG Multiplier applied by [Darkbolt Pursuit] to 30s.

3. When Basic ATKs hit, the Zakti recovered by the 3rd and 4th sequences is increased to 60 and 70 respectively.

4. The Zakti recovered by [Jonin Finisher] on hit is increased to 60.

5. Skill [Raksha’s Rage]: The DMG Multipliers of the 1st (Demon Fox) and 2nd (Samsara of Death) sequences are increased to 600% and 7×120%+7×180% ATK of AOE Lightning DMG respectively.

6. Skill [Naraka Finisher]: Extra SP recovered on hit is increased to 1.4.

7. Skill [Darkbolt Pursuit]: Increased the range of casted kunai.

8. Fixed the glitched texture of her default weapon.

9. Fixed an issue where her turning is too slow or stutters on the Bridge and Co-op Prep screen.

10. Fixed an issue where her weapon disappeared when changing equipment.

When [Blueberry Blitz] is in the team, the Spice accrued by the 3rd and 4th sequence of her Basic ATKs (excluding Joint) is reduced by 5% and 10% respectively.

◆ Molotov Cherry & Blueberry Blitz

Fixed an issue where tapping the weapon skill button after taking a hit made her use Basic ATKs instead of weapon skills.

1. When her battlesuit rank reaches SSS, her [ATK Growth] stat is increased to 5.

2. The DMG dealt by the 1st sequence of her QTE [Solar Impact] is increased to 700% ATK of Fire DMG.

Optimized her facial expression when unleashing Ultimate.

1. Adjusted the timing of combat HUD reappearing when using Ultimate as Veliona to switch into Saule. Buttons now reappear after energy consumption upon Ultimate usage.

2. Fixed her glitched model on the Co-op results screen.

Fixed the misplaced butterfly accessories of outfit [Papilio Lily] during movement.

1. Adjusted the number of tags for battlesuits. Now only the primary tags which are no more than 3 for each battlesuit are displayed.

2. Optimized the sorting and filtering screen of battlesuits. Added new sorting options.

◆ Memorial Arena: Exalted

Added Kallen, Hellmaru, HOMU Emperor and Tonatiuh as bosses.

1. The drops of Simple stages have been adjusted to Gold Pin x6 and Advanced Skill Material x1

2. The drops of Hard 1 stages have been adjusted to Gold Pin x10 and Advanced Skill Material x2

3. Adjusted the reset requirements of stages that drop Advanced Skill Materials. Captains can now use [Planeroid] x6 to reset stage attempts.

◆ Open World: Sakura Samsara

Optimized ambient brightness when assassinating from behind and discovering hidden events.

1. PRI-ARMs [Ruinous Sakura] and [Tranquil Rhapsody] can now be forged.

2. [Tranquil Rhapsody] can be reversed once in v3.7 only. A reversion returns the base weapon (5★ Lv.50 pistols) used to forge [Tranquil Rhapsody] and other materials (excluding Coins) used to forge, upgrade and level-up [Tranquil Rhapsody].

3. Fu Hua: Knight (M), Picasso (B) and Zhangheng (M) can now be crafted with SS Imaginons. Picasso (B) Fragments and Zhangheng (M) Fragments can still be used to craft corresponding stigmata in v3.7.

Attention: After the version update, salvaging [Fu Hua: Knight (M)] returns 1000 Normal Crystal Cores.

4. Picasso (B) and Zhangheng (M) cannot be crafted with their fragments after the v3.8 update. Every Picasso (B) Fragment returns SS Imaginon x1.2 (the sum is rounded up to nearest whole number) and every Zhangheng (M) Fragment returns AE Imaginon x1. New Semester Picasso Fragment Chest and Summer Military Box will no longer be available in Asterite Shop.

Fixed an issue where her model clipped with other enemies.

◆ Aesir Baldr & Hephaestus

Shortened the min moving distance of their thrusting skills.

1. Aligned the Adventure Level in Sakura Samsara and Schicksal HQ. The initial level is the higher of the two.

2. Streamlined the process of obtaining Adventure EXP. Now Adventure EXP is rewarded upon the completion of an Adventure Task.

3. Urgent Missions are replaced by [Familiar’s Requests] that are triggered by the leveling up of Open World Familiars (Higokumaru and Ai-chan). Familiar’s Requests share the same numbers, contents, difficulties and rewards with Urgent Missions.

4. Adjusted how cycle finalization rewards are calculated. [Weekly Rating] and [Task Finalization] rewards have been merged into [Weekly Finalization] rewards that are issued on every Monday. [Task Rating] rewards are replaced by [Round Finalization] rewards that are issued after every task round ends.

5. Closed the task rating system in Schicksal HQ. [Round Finalization] rewards are no longer affected by task ratings.

6. Adjusted the rewards of [Round Finalization]. Gyakushinn Miko Soul and Luna Kindred Soul are now replaced by Battlesuit Soul Option that allows Captains to choose from Ritual Imayoh Soul, Sündenjäger Soul, Arctic Kriegsmesser Soul, Luna Kindred Soul or Gyakushinn Miko Soul.

7. Exorcism tasks that rewarded [Enigmanon: Parts] now reward [Blood Embrace Parts] instead.

8. Optimized how Familiars gain EXP. Familiars auto-gain EXP upon every round finalization.

◆ Co-op (Excluding Ashura Raids)

1. Adjusted the difficulty of Co-op stages. Difficulties are now decided by Captain Level so Captains no longer need to select the difficulty.

2. Adjusted the rules of Co-op stage progress reset. Now Co-op stage progress resets every Friday for free.

3. Adjusted the mission completion rewards and stage drops of Co-op activities to match their difficulties and costs.

4. Added a new [Balance Mode] that grants greater stats buffs and DMG bonuses but is limited to certain stages.

5. Closed [Time Base] Co-op stages temporarily.

6. Removed Weekly missions that required clearing an entire Co-op Raid once to complete.

1. Captains now receive bonus rewards when completing stages on Supreme difficulty for the first time. The bonus rewards are temporarily available along with Flashpoint Action in v3.7 and become permanently available in v3.8. Captains who have not completed the stages in v3.7 can still obtain the bonus rewards in future versions.

2. Increased the overall difficulty of stages.

◆ Story Stages & Expeditions

The limited-time event of Story Chapter XIV has ended. Captains now receive more [RSC Cache Type-II] and no event EXP when playing Story Chapter XIV stages.

The v3.6 event of extracting weapons [Ranger’s Cross] and [Devourer] has ended and the weapon extraction pods have expired.

1. Added the feature to extend the duration of Gene Limit activation by spending more Harmony Strands.

2. Closed the Gene Limit reset feature. Captains can switch between any boosting skill of the same Divine Key during Gene Limit activation.

3. Adjusted the material types and quantities required to upgrade Divine Keys (the total costs remain unchanged).

Captains can purchase [Shadow Knight Fragments] with [Ancient Willpowers] in v3.7 temporarily. Each [Shadow Knight Fragment] costs [Ancient Willpower] x14 and can be purchased 12 times per week. [Shadow Knight Fragments] will no longer be purchasable in War Treasury after the v3.8 update.

1. The skill and talent systems of ELF have been merged into the new skill tree system. New ELF skills are boosted by spending Advanced Skill Materials, Coins and Mind Stones.

2. ELFs are no longer limited by level caps when leveling up. ELFs can now be leveled up directly to the current max level with sufficient materials.

One of the most buffed valkyries in patch 3.7 is the featured battlesuit of patch 3.6: Darkbolt Jonin (DJ). In this short guide, we will go over her buffs and whether it will make an impact on the battlesuit’s current power ranking.

Darkbolt Jonin has many flaws. She is quite possibly the most expensive A rank valkyrie to build; SP battlesuits require an obscene amount of fragments and Advanced Skill Material (getting SSS rank is also quite crucial), and DJ’s optimal weapon set up is forging duplicate PRI-ARM Mag-Typhoons. DJ also has a long basic attack pattern that leaves her vulnerable while performing it. However, all of that could be forgiven if she had a niche to fill, she does not. DJ is the only Lightning Biologic valkyrie in the game, but, anything she can do, Hawk of the Fog (HF) can do better. In fact, there are plenty of contents HF can excel at that DJ cannot. But this is patch 3.7 and all of that is in the past now… right?

Let’s look at the buffs:

This is a great quality of life change for DJ. In the past, it would be impossible to have these bonuses active along with other support boosts like Newton B, Mei Pool Party, and Jin Shengtan. Now you have a large window to prepare your next rotation.

These are more great quality of life changes for DJ. The most important part is that DJ’s 4 combo attack sequence will give a grand total of 200 Zakti, rather than the awkward 160, which will go a long way to reducing the number of basic attacks needed.

These last two points are likely the most impactful for those who wish to use her competitively. DJ’s ultimate damage has increased from a total of 2,010% Atk of Lightning damage to 2,960% Atk. This is a huge increase in burst potential, which will likely be further exaggerated with Lightning damage and support stigmatas.

The increase in Naraka Finisher Sp gain will also help DJ exploit her buffed ultimate, allowing her to reach 100 SP much faster.

These buffs will not erase most of the opinions made during patch 3.6, DJ still suffers greatly from multiple flaws. However, some of those flaws have been addressed. The Darkbolt and Zakti gain buffs have made her performance much smoother, especially for newer Captains who are most likely to make use of the change. The buffs to Naraka Finisher and her Ultimate will have high impact competitively, especially for those who can potentially burst down a boss with a single ultimate. These buffs are a step in the right direction, but still not enough for DJ to move out of HF’s shadows. Unfortunately, DJ is still far too expensive of an investment, for very limited returns.
