Electric vehicles (EVs) have soared in popularity throughout the past year—and it looks like that isn’t going to slow down anytime soon. At the forefront of this EV surge is Tesla—the most popular and successful electric vehicle manufacturer.

This success has lead to a ton of interest in Tesla cars and vehicles, prompting people to ask questions like “How much does a Tesla cost?” or “How much is used Tesla?”

These are great questions, and at Find My Electric we love educating prospective Tesla buyers on the market in order to help them find the best deal possible!

In this blog post, we’re going to cover both new and used Tesla prices for 2021, and also drop some knowledge on finding the best deal on a Tesla! Sound good? Alright, let’s dive in!

How Much Does a Tesla Car Cost?

If you’re thinking that these prices are a bit expensive—well, it’s true that they can be a bit on the upper end (depending upon your budget), but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a good deal on a Tesla or get into one at an affordable price point (you definitely can).

You may have also noticed that we didn’t include the Standard Range RWD Model 3 (AKA the “$35,000 Model 3”) in this general price range—and that’s because Tesla doesn’t sell it anymore (more on this later).

Now that we’ve covered the cost of new Tesla vehicles, let’s look at the prices of used Teslas…

How Much Does a Used Tesla Cost?

Obviously, used Tesla vehicles with lower mileage and newer model years will be more expensive than older, higher mileage vehicles—but features and hardware versioning come into play as well.

For example, in fall 2016 Tesla released the hardware for Autopilot 2.0 which is Full Self-Driving capable. So, vehicles manufactured after this date tend to have better resale value than those manufactured before it (although all Teslas, regardless model year hold their resale value quite well).

Generally speaking, a used Model S/X will cost more than a used Model 3/Y, with a used original Roadster price falling closer to the S/X range.

If you’re looking for the cheapest used Tesla, you’ll want to search for a pre-owned Model 3 or an older (2012-2014) Model S as they typically represent the lowest-priced vehicles in the Tesla world.

To look at even more specific pricing, let’s jump into the following sections and break down Tesla vehicle prices by model (S, 3, X, Y and more).

How Much Does a Tesla Model S Cost (New & Used)?

At the top of the range, you’ll find relatively newer (2020, 2021, 2022, etc.) Model S Performance cars with low mileage and Full Self-Driving, and at bottom and you’ll find older, first generation Model S vehicles (2012, 2013, 2014) with the 40 and 60 kWh battery packs and higher mileage (often more than 100,000 miles).

How Much Does a Tesla Model 3 Cost (New & Used)?

If you’re looking to add up the true cost of a Model 3 (currently Tesla’s cheapest vehicle), Ben Sullins (formerly Teslanomics) has a great breakdown here:

How Much Is a Tesla Model X (New & Used)?

On the low end of the used Model X range, you’re likely looking at a 2016 60D or 70D with higher miles, and on the high end you’re probably talking about a newer (2020 etc.) Performance Model X with Full Self-Driving (FSD). All of the other model years fall somewhere between those two points.

How Much Does a Tesla Model Y Cost (New & Used)?

How Much Does a Tesla Cybertruck Cost (New/Used)?

How Much Is a Tesla Semi Truck? (New/Pre-Owned)?

How Much Does a Tesla Roadster Cost (New & Used)?

As new Tesla Roadsters are manufactured and enter the marketplace, these prices will change, but for now this is the price range that applies.

Tesla Roadsters in this model year range (2008 – 2012) are quite rare and highly sought after as the production numbers are quite low, so you can expect to pay a premium to own a drivable piece of Tesla history!

Tax Breaks, EV Incentives and Other Factors Affecting Tesla Prices

Unfortunately for Tesla, the federal tax incentives in the US have expired because they’ve produced too many vehicles over the threshold limit, but there are still a variety of local incentives that you can get depending upon what state you’re in.

Tesla keeps a great log of these incentives on their page here: https://www.tesla.com/support/incentives

Currently, the best incentives are given by California ($5,000) and Vermont ($5,000), although there are a variety of conditions that must be met in order to qualify for these.

That said, these incentives only apply to new vehicles, so if you’re looking for a used Tesla, you’re out of luck there incentive-wise. But—the savings that you get from buying a used Tesla can often be greater than the price of an incentive, so that’s definitely worth considering!

OK, I’m Thinking of Buying Used to Save Some Money—Where’s the Best Place to Find a Used Tesla for Sale?

On Find My Electric, of course! We’ve worked incredibly hard to create the ultimate marketplace for used Tesla vehicles!

You can search/sort by Tesla-specific models, colors (including discontinued colors like Obsidian Black Metallic), Autopilot version, and much, much more!

Check out our used Tesla listings and get started finding the low-cost, used Tesla that you’ve been dreaming of! And if you’re looking to sell your Tesla, we can help with that too!

How Much Does A Tesla Cost? Model By Model Price Breakdown

In the past decade, Tesla has become an icon in the automotive industry. From the 3 to the X, each excels in its own domain.

Just thirteen years after the first Roadster deliveries, Tesla has become perhaps the most salient U.S. automaker. Whether it’s the compact sedan or crossover segment, it’s more than apparent that Tesla is the most popular electric car brand.

Instead of simply building electric cars, Tesla built an icon based upon an ecosystem and a lifestyle. In 2022, its ecosystem is stronger than ever, but its prices have slowly moved more and more upstream. Here are Tesla’s entries for the 2022 model year.

For the first time, the Tesla Model 3 Performance is officially less expensive than a base Model Y. With a sub-$60,000 tag, the Model 3 Performance is one of the overall best performing EVs on the market. Zero to sixty takes just 3.1 seconds, and it can achieve a top speed of 162 mph. As these performance figures are impressive for any car, the Model 3 Performance is a five-seater sedan with a 315-mile range. However, the new BMW i4 M50 should challenge the Model 3 Performance’s prominence.

With a similar number of flat edges as a Paper Mate pink eraser, Tesla’s trapezoidal oeuvre is that of any Californian millennial’s dream. But, like most dreams and ambitions, the Cybertruck is probably not coming anytime soon. The Cybertruck has recently been delayed to 2023, and if Tesla says something is delayed, expect that date to likely change. Plus, Tesla dropped all info on pricing, so there’s really nothing much to say about it.

Talks of an updated Roadster began circulating as early as 2011. With more delays than a budget airline flight, the refreshed Tesla Roadster should surely come out soon. Well, it’s actually unlikely to come out soon because the Cybertruck, which has been delayed, is prioritized for production. However, the Roadster should be worth the wait because it will provide disturbingly quick performance numbers: 620 miles of range and a 1.9 second 0-60 run in the base model. A more powerful SpaceX Edition is also underway, and since it’s equipped with cold air thrusters, expect a zero to sixty time of around 1.1 seconds.

A rumored Tesla Model Y Standard Range is set to make a comeback, but this time equipped with the LFP pack featured in the Chinese Model Y and Model 3. Like the LFP 3, the car can regularly charge to 100% without posing a threat to long term battery health. On the topic of pricing, expect an increase due to a mixture of high demand and other Tesla price expansions.

Last but certainly not least is the heavily-rumored Tesla hatchback. While there’s very little known about it, it’s rumored to take the form of a compact hatchback, likely with four doors. It appears to directly take on the Chevrolet Bolt and a variety of European hatchbacks like the ID.3. Since it’s a Tesla, expect a rear motor setup and enough horsepower to get it to sixty in under six seconds or so.

Tesla may have started its journey to manufacture affordable electric vehicles, but it proved to be a difficult task.

As the world is still dealing with the supply chain disruptions and semi-conductor shortages due to the COVID-19 pandemic, prices of both internal combustion and electric vehicles increase.

Tesla keeps increasing the prices of its different models from time to time, let’s take a look at how Tesla increased its electric vehicles’ price in about a year.

When thinking about a future electric vehicle purchase like a Tesla, your first thought might be, “how much does a Tesla cost?” Well, we’ve already covered that for you. If you’re like many people and are new to the world of electric vehicles, your next question might be, “how much does it cost to charge a Tesla?”

Table of contents

Introduction to EV charging

Before we dig right into the monetary differences in how much it costs to charge a Tesla, it’s important to understand the differences between charging levels. While each level offers different rates of charges based on a number of factors, these choices will also affect how little or much you pay while you charge back up.

Level 1 AC charging

Think of Level 1 as the universal charging option. If there is a standard wall socket nearby, you will be able to charge your Tesla without issue… or speed. Realistically, 110-120V is the bare minimum amount of juice you can pull into your EV. So if the battery capacity of your 2021 Tesla Long Range Model 3 is 82 kWh, you’re looking at days to charge, not hours.

Level 2 AC charging

These chargers are the most common type found at third-party public stations. 220-240V plugs usually offer around 40 to 50 amps and are usually more strategically placed when in a home. This level of power is equivalent to your dryer or another large appliance.

Tesla encourages owners to install a Level 2 charger in their home if they can, which is usually a fairly easy process for an electrician or specialist to install. With Level 2, you can charge your Tesla in around 8-12 hours.

Tesla Supercharger (DC Fast Charger)

Level 3 chargers or DCFCs, abandon the alternating current (AC) methods above to mainline power directly from the grid. While they require a lot more power (480+ volts and 100+ amps), their output is tenfold greater.

Most Tesla Superchargers can now recharge up to 200 miles of range in only 15 minutes, depending on the charge rate. Superchargers also range from charging speeds of 90 kW to 250 kW, depending on what Supercharger you end up at.

Due to their massive direct current (DC), Superchargers are not recommended for daily Tesla charging. Instead, Superchargers provide a quick charge for drivers on the go or for those making pit stops on longer road trips.

Recently, Elon Musk has stated Tesla’s plans to implement 300 kW Superchargers, but we have yet to see them. Most recently, Tesla shared that it plans to triple the size of its Supercharger network within the next two years. Great news for EV adoption, especially when the automaker begins allowing other EV models to use its chargers.

Looking for more info on Tesla’s Supercharger network? Perfect, we’ve already put together a comprehensive guide for you. Here’s a throwback to the first Tesla Supercharger pile in Hawthorne, CA.

Other important factors to note

The prices below cover the approximate cost of charging your Tesla EV from 0 to 100 percent, even though you should never let your vehicle battery get to 0 percent. Furthermore, you generally shouldn’t charge your Tesla all the way to 100 percent unless you need that full range for a long trip, and plan to drive it shortly after charging.

Also, remember that AC chargers are not perfectly efficient, and more kWh of energy is required to replenish a battery pack than the actual battery capacity itself.

This is because the vehicle has to convert the alternating current (AC) from the electrical circuit to a direct current (DC) that can be successfully used to charge the battery.

As a result, the efficiency of the charger decreases, especially as your EV battery creeps closer to full capacity, since the level of heat increases, releasing precious energy.

Luckily, Teslas can use this heat for things like battery preconditioning in cold weather, but for the sake of strictly charging, you will require more kWh of energy to charge your battery than the actual battery size.

How much does it cost to charge a Tesla at home?

To begin, we will compare prices of each Tesla model based on the AC charging capabilities available to you at your abode. By using some relatively novel math, we can determine approximately what it may cost you to charge your Tessie on average in the US.

Then, you can use this math later to determine a more precise cost in your home state… if you want. The data used to approximate these costs was gathered from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), which was last updated in August of 2021.

Additionally, we are using the current Tesla models listed on its website to figure the latest battery sizes and estimated range.

Tesla Model S

Average efficiency rates for Level 1 and Level 2 AC chargers fall between 80-90%, so we will call it right down the middle at 85% efficiency. So where were we?

Tesla Model X

Tesla Model 3

Let’s dig into the newer models next, beginning the cheapest Tesla to date, the Model 3. This Tesla gets a little more interesting because its trims vary in battery size. For instance, the Standard Range Plus Model 3 comes with a 50 kWh battery, while the Long Range and Performance versions sit upon a 82 kWh battery.

Tesla Model Y

Until Cybertruck someday delivers, the newest Tesla to hit roads in the US remains the Model Y. Currently available in two trims, both the Long Range and Performance versions feature a 75 kWh battery.

Cost to charge a Tesla Supercharger/DCFC

DC Fast Chargers get you back on the road fully juiced a lot quicker, but it may cost you more for the advantage of speed.

Again, these prices very much depend on where you’re charging, the rates during the time of charge, and how much energy you’re actually taking from the grid.

On average, commercial energy prices are cheaper in the US. However, Tesla’s Supercharger network doesn’t necessarily utilize commercial rates, and certainly doesn’t charge customers that low of a rate.

DCFC’s like Tesla Superchargers snag DC power directly without having to convert it for your EVs battery, making them much more efficient compared to Level 1 and 2 charging. Charging efficiencies range from around 90% to 99%, so for our estimates, we will call it 95%.

Tesla Model Y

Tesla Model 3

Tesla Model X

Tesla Model S

Both versions of the Model S also feature the 100 kWh battery (see above). That being said, let’s skip right through to the cost per mile.

Ways to save money charging your Tesla EV

The numbers above are simply estimates to give you an idea of the sorts of cost differentials between charging levels. Again, additional factors such as your location, charger, and whether its peak energy hours can all play a big role.

Either way, they should offer some idea of how to most effectively choose what style of charging is best for your given battery level situation. Additionally, there are other ways to save yourself some cash on public charging networks.

Does Tesla still offer free Supercharging?

Yes, but not recently. When Tesla EVs really began ramping up deliveries to customers after the debut of the Model S, many customers saw added perks like unlimited Supercharging. Over time, Tesla has incorporated similar promotions for specific models or customers who made a referral.

However, this still remains one of the most confusing potential perks for Tesla owners, old and new. We get a lot of questions, such as: How can I tell if my Tesla has free unlimited Supercharging?; Does free Supercharging transfer over?; and Does Tesla still offer free Supercharging?

We will have to get more granular on this in a separate post, but here are some broad strokes:

Here’s a breakdown of what Tesla models may still have a promotion for free unlimited supercharging. We’ve also put together a more detailed guide here.

Remember to check with Tesla to confirm if your EV qualifies or not:

*Note: No Tesla models from 2021 onward have any promotions for unlimited Supercharging at this time

Tesla ModelYear(s)Unlimited Supercharging status
Model Y2020-2021None

Model X2016-2020Potentially available, confirm with Tesla
Model S2012-2020Potentially available (excluding the S 40), confirm with Tesla

Third party charging networks offer occasional discounts

No matter what EV you drive, there are public charging options at your disposal from other networks aside from Tesla. Each has its own app, automotive partners, and deals for those who decide to charge with them.

These deals are always evolving, and can apply to certain customers for purchasing a particular vehicle or can last a day or two for all customers during special events like holidays.

Do your research to see what charging networks have a footprint in your area and see what sort of promotions they may be offering.

Here are some places to start:

How to estimate the cost to charge any EV

So what if you don’t have a Tesla? Are you somehow unworthy of knowing your cost to charge too? That couldn’t be further from the truth, my friends. No matter what zero-emission make or model you drive, you can still determine how much it will cost you to charge your electric vehicle.

Here’s a semi-simple way to figure it out

Quick history of Tesla’s models: from Model S to Model Y

Tesla began commercially manufacturing their first electric car, the Roadster, back in 2008. However, it wasn’t until the company purchased its factory in Fremont, California that they started to build the four models we know and love today:

First came the Tesla Model S, a mid-size luxury sedan vehicle, back in 2012. And from there, Tesla went on to diversify its option set. Their first SUV option, the Model X, came to market in 2015, followed by their more affordable compact sedan option–the Model 3–three years later. Most recently, Tesla started shipping its first compact SUV, the Model Y, in 2020.

Excitingly, the electric car giant plans to release a new and improved version of its flagship electric car, the Roadster, in 2023. Tesla has promised that this sports convertible will be the quickest car in the world – we’ll have to wait and see!

For most Tesla fanatics, their primary interest has long been around the company’s Model S sedan. That changed at the end of 2015 when Tesla released its highly anticipated SUV offering, the Model X. Though the Model X is often marketed as an electric SUV, its size more closely resembles a compact crossover like a Subaru Forrester or Toyota Corolla. The Model X is the fastest sport utility vehicle in the automobile industry – the Plaid model can reach 60 mph in a mere 2.5 seconds!

Other Tesla car costs to consider

As with any other car purchase, paying for a car involves more than the prices we listed above, or the prices a manufacturer lists online. Additional fees–both ongoing and one-time payments–will increase the overall cost of buying a Tesla. When evaluating a Tesla purchase against other options, consider:

It can be hard to truly assess the total costs of driving a Tesla given the variability in some of the factors listed above; fortunately, our EV showroom personalizes your estimated costs based on your geography, how long you plan to own your car, and how many miles you drive each year. You can get your own personalized EV cost assessment here.

EV incentives and tax breaks for Tesla cars

That said, your Tesla purchase may be eligible for other state or local incentives depending on where you live. For example, states like California, Maryland and Colorado offer cash incentives or credits for electric car owners. Others offer non-cash incentives like indefinite carpool access and free tolls. Regardless, there’s a good chance that the price tag for your Tesla car will look a lot better once you factor in credits and incentives.

Using EnergySage’s EV showroom, you can explore all of the electric vehicle incentives in your area by car make and model, tax filing status, and household income. Simply click the “Personalize Incentives” button and enter your zip code to get started.

Frequently asked questions about Tesla’s car options

A Tesla car battery is supposed to last for between 300,000 and 500,000 miles before it might need to be replaced.

Is buying a Tesla car worth it?

Of course, buying a Tesla will cost more than most cars upfront; despite the release of the more-affordable Model Y, it’s still regarded as a luxury vehicle and has the price tag to match. When it comes down to it, whether or not you should buy a Tesla depends on your preferences and personal finances. On the plus side, Tesla owners typically experience low maintenance costs and fuel savings relative to comparable luxury vehicles with gas-powered engines. Outside of financial savings, electric cars like Teslas also help reduce pollution, so if environmental stewardship is important to you, an electric car–a Tesla model or otherwise–is the way to go.

With any big purchase, it’s important to do a bit of research and compare your options before making a decision – and EnergySage’s EV showroom is a great place to start! Using our comparison feature, you can easily evaluate multiple cars side-by-side, including all-electric, hybrid, and gasoline models. “families who own that vehicle will never have to worry about gas prices again.”
“The people who stand to benefit most from owning an EV are often rural residents who have the most distances to drive, who burn the most gas, and underserved urban residents in areas where there are higher gas prices and lower income,” Buttigieg said.

Lower income folks cannot afford a 45,000 vehicle. Tesla makes the only marginally practical EV with a reasonable driving range——but with a high price tag.

agreed and well said. I would love to see the governemnt breakdown how Evs are “better” for the environment. They need more steel. They cost more manpower to produce. They need more batteries (which are not biodegradable). There are no pros to these EVs, nothing.

it would be great if more people rode motorcycles and less cars )

Cid Miller, that is fake news. Read what the fire department said about it …

Got the detailed information that I’ve been looking for so far. Great work LUKE RICHARDSON.

Sounds challenging, but l’ll take the Hybrid.
I can’t see myself driving a Tesla in an electrical
Storm⚡⛈⚡

You do realize.. the hybrid is basically an electric vehicle AND a gas combustion…

Not to mention that there is literally no difference in an electrical storm as all cars are insulated from ground and are basically floating faraday cages.

These things are way too expensive! Fortunately, Tesla isn’t the only maker of plugin vehicles.

According to Edmunds dot com “true cost to own” calculator the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt have a lower five year cost of ownership than any car you can buy new or USED.

I wouldn’t mind driving one of the Tesla cars….BUT in REALITY….the average American consumer can not afford this car…

“Though the Model X is often marketed as an electric SUV, its size more closely resembles a compact crossover such as a Subaru Forrester or Toyota Corolla.”

Corolla? What? That’s an insane thing to say.

Apparently one reason to eliminate fossil fueled cars is NOx emmissions such as NO and NO2.
I would like to point out that a guy can’t get an erection without Nitric Oxide (NO).
That’s why some poor old guys take Viagra.
I think we need more fossil fuel cars and we need to breath deeply as much as possible!

Two young men just recently died (like in the past day) plus several more before then.
Trusting in that Tesla have cost many their lives. Its tragic.
The Tesla hit a tree and ingnited.
The fire department was unable to put the fire out.
With EVERY attempt it would reignite.
They even tried to get ahold of Tesla as to how to put out the fire. NO RESPONSE FROM THEM.
Basically if a Tesla starts on fire. You need to just allow it to burn up as well as the occupants inside.
Horrific to watch and not be able to do ANYTHING but watch injured people die.
DON’T ever buy a Tesla.

Alex, makes good points but only touches on the I’m practicality of these vehicles for long range travel. I saw family a pull up to the Tesla charger the other day, plug up and unload the kids and a picnic basket to have a feast in the dog walk area (eww) while awaiting their charge. However, 20 min charge only gets you… Tada! 152 miles.
Then it’s time for ANOTHER picnic I don’t get hungry that fast.
My bi-weekly commute from NJ to FL begs for combustion!!
