How Much Do Language Lessons Cost?
Oh, the allure of being able to speak in a foreign tongue.
I’m not sure if we have really taken the time to question, how much does it really cost for one to become a bonafide member of the bilingual world? Well, the answer to that question really depends on what you value—time or money? Many of us see foreign languages as charming, but if that is the only reason we want to learn, then paying a reasonable fee for fluency may be out of your budget. If, however, you need this additional language for work or to speak with your spouse’s family, then invested time is just what you need!
Why learn a new language anyway?
Well, one of the more fundamental reasons is for work! The global community that we all now live in has shaped our lives in a rather unique way. And while Google Translate is useful, it must be tedious to attempt to use translation technology to figure out entire meetings. Switching from screen to screen to copy your question, waiting on the response and pasting your reply, can become a bit much! If this is a language that you will be interacting with for the foreseeable future, then learning it will certainly be to your advantage. No more flip-flopping.
On the other hand, most of us have found ourselves indoors with a whole lot of free time on our hands and no idea what to do with it! While many of us are extremely excited to use this time to catch up on some well-needed sleep, the super organized and extremely motivated achievers among us may feel a little lost. Well, learning a new language could be just the thing for you. Not just learning it, though, but learning it well. It’s an educational pursuit, but it really is a relaxing exercise that could count as a new hobby! Picture it… Sicily… No, not with The Golden Girls, but you! On a business trip, without an interpreter! #goals.
Then there are the spontaneous among us. The ones who never back down from a challenge and can see the positive in almost any and everything. Who knows what opportunities learning a new language could open up for us? Let’s do it! …But how?
Which Type of Language Class is Best for Me and My Goals?
There are a bunch of ways to fulfill your language learning goals.
You can choose :
TruFluency offers what we believe to be one of the most effective methods – one-on-one tutoring. You know yourself better than anyone else.
If you learn best on your own, or you want fast progress, then the group setting won’t work for you, and the last thing we’d like is for you to waste your resources.
How Much Time Can You Give to Learning a New Language?
That brings us to the next point:
How much available time do you have for language lessons? If you have a demanding schedule then private lessons (online or in-person) would work best for you, as that medium allows you to choose your own schedule. Group classes will be less flexible. Just like back in high school or college, the schedule is set for you, you simply need to show up. The self-paced platforms are available for your choosing.
How Much Do Private Language Lessons Cost?
The final step is checking the price. From highest to lowest, while private lessons will definitely be the most pricey, the online version of this clocks in a little lower than its in-person counterpart.
Similarly, group lessons in person – though cheaper than the private lessons – will cost more than group lessons online. Then come the software programs, followed by the different apps, paid then free. Now that we have this info, let us use it to honestly decide what works best for us, what can your pocket handle?
Comparing Language Lessons Costs
The big question: What is your monthly budget and will that align with your goals?
While most schools insist on four hours weekly as the minimum class time to truly see fast progress, research has shown that for one to learn a language well, a minimum of two hours per week is the absolute least amount of time that should be spent talking with the teacher if you want to move forward with the language at a reasonable pace, albeit slow.
If it’s a hobby and you do not really care if you get fluent quickly, then as little as an hour per week can work for you with a live instructor. This information should really help you to choose effortlessly, once your goals and your budget align.
Well, what type of language course will you choose?
For the hobbyists among us, one hour per week with a live tutor or a fun group may just be up your alley.
The self-paced environments are also great for giving you just the amount of engagement you desire, for the least amount of spending.
For those of us who really want progress but the time and/or money refuse to cooperate just now, the two hour per week minimum would be just great, maybe even with a group to make some new friends as well!
TruFluency is an excellent investment for persons ready and willing to truly become fluent in a new language. Once you’ve decided, we will be happy to schedule with you. Take a trial class with us and let’s see what happens. Until then, Adios! Au revoir! Sayonara! Zaijian! Tchau! Proschay! Goodbye!
How much do ESL lessons cost? How are they priced?
I am writing this post on how much ESL lessons cost from the perspective of the service provider, not the receiver. What I want to do in this post is to discuss a few of the elements that go into the lessons and what they ultimately have to cost.
We will start with individual and private one-to-one lessons.
Individual ESL lessons and private lessons
Most ESL teachers offer one-on-one ESL lessons. The number of variables is huge though. Let’s break it down into two types first. A company that provides ESL teachers or individual ESL teachers working alone. Then break it up into online teaching or face-to-face teaching. Next thing to look at is whether you are talking about one-to-one classes or group classes.
Individual, one-to-one, private ESL lessons through a company
Learning English through a company is probably the most popular way to learn English. There are thousands of companies out there to choose from, Berlitz, British Council, Inlingua, International House, and Wall Street are big ones with branches all over the world.
I am going to state the obvious here. I am not sure what every company is charging for their ESL courses. What I will do, is have a look at the pricing of courses with some well-known and popular companies according to their websites and client reviews.
First off, Berlitz. The courses discussed here will probably use the conversational Berlitz Method®. For other methods and approaches to ESL teaching make sure you check out my other post.
Please do let me know if my math is off, or that I am doing Berlitz some grave injustice by making some error in my calculation with regard to their pricing of ESL courses.
Next up, let us look at Inlingua.
Wall Street is one of those places that likes you to come in before they give you prices. This is because they need you in the office to make the pitch. If you are not in front of them you might just hang up the phone and not listen to the sales pitch. They don’t want to have you on the phone because they know they are likely to lose you on the call when you faint. When someone faints on a call, it is very hard to continue the sales pitch when you are semi-dazed.
All the websites are pretty standard and ask to fill in a form so that you can come in and get the pitch. Published pricing is a little hard to find. In Thailand, the Wall Street franchise is owned by Wave Entertainment, which is weird, but was the best option for them after they got unceremoniously dumped by Pearson. Wave Entertainment releases an Annual Report, and based on that annual report we can get some averages…
Individual, one-to-one, private ESL lessons with a freelance teacher
Group Classes with a company
Online Courses with a company
Wall Street does manage to come in lower than that. However, if you look at the business model, it will become immediately apparent that there isn’t actually that much face-time with a teacher. Around 90% of learners time at Wall Street (and other language centres too, not just WSE, but using WSE as an example here) will be spent on a computer in the centre.
They have personal tutors (usually locals, not foreigners, aka Native Speakers) helping, but essentially it will be 90% of the learners time in front of a computer. Then they will book an Encounter. During the Encounter and have what they did online and their workbook “tested” in a 4 person class with a teacher. Actually, facetime is not that high. In many ways reflects the sort of thing that makes the online businesses of many of the big language centres so profitable.
Wall Street uses the Wall Street Channel, which is group Webex conferencing for their online offering. Generally, this is an add-on to contracts, but can also be a stand-alone thing that the salespeople will sell in blocks of 10, 20 or 30 hours. Content is very GE, at least in Thailand. I am not too sure what the offering is in China. From what information that is available online, it’s pretty much the same GE stuff.
Company Pricing of ESL Courses
When you have done an analysis of various courses, it will turn out that the best format for the learner will be a short and sweet course. Most vendors/service providers try to get clients to subscribe to their service for a year. Or they will sell courses 30, 60, 90, 120-hour blocks. For them, that’s great. It will go a long way to ensure the doors stay open if enough of those big contracts are sold. The longer the course, the less specific it will be. The high-value courses will be custom and short. These courses will not be cheap.
If you are a service provider not working to a specific method (let us assume you are a one-man/woman band), then you will be designing a course specifically based on what the NA revealed about the client needs.
Unless you have a low-level client that needs a GE course, this should be doable in 8, 90-minute sessions without a sweat. This keeps the pricing you need to apply to the course down so you can get the sale. It is also of tremendous value for the client, which is how it should be. Let’s do some pricing.
That should price out a competing business. Given their additional overheads and the fact that they have to do the same calculation, but include various other factors which increase their price. In most instances, a competing business would very likely triple that price. That makes a lot of sense, for reasons beyond what the scope of this post is. The thing to remember with pricing is that price equals perception. A low price is very often perceived as low value and a high price as high-value. That has a lot of influence on how much ESL courses cost.
The issue is that it costs a load of money to get 20 people to each to buy a contract. The Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) is something that many ESL managers do a very poor job at calculating. Getting even 1 client is difficult to do. Getting 20 to start at exactly the same day and time that is convenient for your business is really, really hard to do. You also need factor in the marketing dollars or the overheads over the time period it takes to get 20 people into a classroom consistently.
If you are involved in selling courses, do not go crazy with your discount. Have a look at your actual costing, including the overheads involved to get those butts in the seats. Do not price it so low that you are haemorrhaging money and just praying you get enough people into the class. The truth is, you very likely will not.
Pricing ESL Online Courses
I went into the pricing of online ESL courses in another post about the cost of ESL courses, so will not be going into that here. Suffice to say that every company has an online class on offer, either as group or individual. Individual classes are rarer with companies though. The reason being is that they have to squeeze as much teaching time with as many full fee-paying participants at once as they can.
Companies offering online ESL courses are very creative when it comes to time allocation of the sessions. Often they are intentionally vague with regard to what online sessions actually are. Here is an example.
A company advertises a 30-hour online course with adaptive learning. It also includes the immediate assessment of quizzes and face to face teaching in every unit. What they won’t say is how long the face to face “teaching” is. They do not say a few things…
Firstly, the one to one teaching session may only be 15 minutes long. It happens all the time that the actual teaching sessions are short. If the sessions are longer, then the price will be really similar to the non-online session. The reason is that the teacher still devotes the same time to the participant. It is about the time, regardless of whoever it’s online or physically in the same room. If the price is a lot lower, look at how long the sessions are.
Secondly, the teaching may be more general than specific. Instead of the teaching being informed by individual participant needs, the lessons are just GE lessons based on a one size fits all model. These aren’t great. They do not give a lot of value to the participants.
Thirdly, online face to face sessions may (usually do) have more than 2 faces. Often 4 to 15 participants take part in online sessions. Wall Street’s Channel, for example, does that sort of thing. Often there may actually be 10 participants online at the same time for 1 teacher.
Lastly, it is also worthwhile to find out who is actually doing the online face-to-face sessions. While advertising is likely to show a young white man or woman, professionally dressed, with a huge unsettling smile on their face, this is very unlikely to be the case in the class. The reason is that those people are very expensive. Instead, it is more likely that the company doing online training will have hired Filipino teachers or people working part-time from home.
Teachers from lower-income countries like the Philippines are a lot more popular though, as the companies typically only need to pay these teachers around 5 dollars an hour. As companies that provide online ESL teaching tend to charge in the 60-100 dollar an hour range, only paying a Filipino teacher 5 bucks an hour makes a lot of sense for profitability.
How Much Do Voice Lessons Cost?
How Much Do Voice Lessons Cost?
Knowing how much voice lessons cost is an important aspect of your research into vocal training. But in Austin, there are so many voice teachers that it’s difficult to get an idea of how much singing lessons cost.
The problem is not all teachers are listed in a single database like lessons.com. So you’re often looking at a teacher’s website wondering whether you’re going to get a good value for your money.
There are even some teachers that don’t list a cost for singing lessons or provide a singing lessons price list.
To simplify things, I’d like to share some research I’ve done into how much singing lessons cost in Austin, TX. Then we can discuss if it’s worth it to you to begin training.
How much are singing lessons?
Normally, the cost of voice lessons is based on a flat fee for an increment of time with the teacher. The flat fee is then built into the cost of singing lessons.
Voice lessons are normally priced in 30-minute, 45-minute and 60-minute increments. Occasionally, lessons are shorter or longer but the vast majority fall within the 30-60 minute range.
Singing Lessons Cost Per Hour
If we compare an hourly rate across the board, I have seen music lessons prices in Austin as low as $60/hr and as high as $125/hr depending on the teacher.
This range accounts for private music lesson prices only. Group classes, which are often cheaper, are not included.
Are Voice Lessons Worth the Cost?
Now, before you pass out from sticker shock, it’s important to remember that these prices range depending on the teacher. In my experience, a teacher’s price for a voice lesson correlates to the amount of experience and education they have.
Like with anything else, sometimes the more expensive the teacher, the higher quality the voice lesson.
The truth is some teachers really know how to get you singing your best and make an hour lesson fly. I’ve taken other lessons where I’m just watching the clock waiting to leave.
It’s all about value!
The Most Important Factor in What Voice Lessons Cost
It can be very easy to get caught up in the dollar signs and trying to find the cheapest teacher that you miss out on the most important factor in the price of singing lessons: value.
You should always feel the singing teacher has your best interest at heart and is delivering a good value. We all have our days, but even when a teacher isn’t at their best, you shouldn’t feel you’re wasting your time.
Factor Time into Your Budget for Singing Lessons
The other reason it’s important to find singing lesson prices that fit your budget is that you want to make sure you can commit a certain amount of time to developing your voice.
For a beginning singer, private voice lessons are the best way to learn to sing. But first and foremost, the most important aspect of your vocal training is that it’s consistent and practiced regularly. But if you’re taking out a second mortgage on your house or selling your car to afford voice lessons (it’s happened!), it’s only a matter of time before you have to call it quits.
The same is also true for the pro or seasoned singer. While they have already spent a lot of time developing their voice, a more experienced singing teacher will be able to consistently challenge and prepare them for the demands of the road or recording.
The bottom line is: no matter how big your dreams are, you should never put your financial future or plans at risk to take voice lessons you can’t afford. Most of the time, it’s better to get started by listening to great singers and learning some of the basic concepts of singing than take 2 lessons then quit.
Don’t Worry, Be Happy
Remember, the voice is an instrument that always takes time to develop, so it’s important that you feel that the cost of singing lessons is something you can afford for a while. At the end of the day, you want to make sure there’s enough in your budget that you can relax and enjoy the process.
That’s what voice lessons are for. Enjoying singing! The less you’re able to worry about the financial aspect the better.
I’ve also done some research on the best voice teachers in Austin. I hope you find it helpful. If you’d like to get started with singing lessons at Ramsey Voice Studio, you can book your first lesson here so we can start setting goals together for your future.
Private voice lessons are available for students in Austin, TX or by Skype, FaceTime and Zoom worldwide.
How Much Do Piano Lessons For Children Cost?
The average cost of a piano lesson for a child is between £15- £45 per lesson in the UK for a 1:1 in home tuition lesson, or between £15 and £35 for a 1:1 online piano lesson.
In person 1-hour lesson: Average is £25 on Tutorful
Online 1-hour lesson: Average is £25 on Tutorful
If you’re looking for a piano tutor and are unsure where to start, we here at Tutorful have 10,000 expert tutors who charge an average of £25 for a 1 hour piano lesson.

In order to get a sense of what learning the piano involves check our handy beginner’s guide. If you’re looking for more information about the cost of piano lessons that keep scrolling!
How much do piano lessons cost in England?
Prices can vary across the UK, on average the price of piano lessons is often higher in the south of England, and typically highest around the London area. The north on average has lower prices for in-home private piano lessons, prices typically hovering around £25 and peaking around £35. It’s worth bearing in mind these are ‘typical’ rates. So your tutor may charge more or less depending on your requirements.
How do I find an experienced tutor?
It stands to reason that the more seasoned and experienced piano tutors are likely to charge more than others. Being a qualified teacher, or experienced private tutor, playing the piano for a substantial number of years, or experience tutoring piano students to pass the exams can drive up the price a little.
What is important is how well the piano tutor is able to meet your needs, and help you achieve goals. For example, if you’re not looking for your child to take the ABRSM piano exams, then it may be worth trying to find a tutor who has teaching experience, or experience playing in orchestras or bands. Be sure to discuss your needs with the tutor before booking, we’ve put together a handy guide to finding an experienced piano tutor!
What makes an experienced piano tutor?
Are you looking for in-home or at your tutor’s home?
Whether you’re looking for in-home piano lessons, or your happy to have the lessons at the piano tutors home can have an impact on the price of the lessons.
Most tutors consider the distance they have to travel in their rate; that can either be the fuel cost or other travel expenses, or it can be the time taken to reach your home, as it can have a knock-on impact on the number of lessons the tutor can complete in a day. It means that there is a possibility that the price of the piano lesson can be a little higher if your set on having piano lessons in your own home. Equally, if you’re happy to travel to the tutors own home then it may mean that the cost of the lesson is slightly reduced.
It’s important to consider a number of things when making this decision, like your families schedule, and your tutor’s availability, how easy it is to travel to either your home or theirs, your own transport options, whether you’re comfortable having lessons in someone else’s home.
How much do online piano lessons cost?
Many parents are now opting to get their children online piano lessons, which means no travelling for either tutor or you, and that you have access to the best and most experienced piano tutors across the country, and that the prices are generally a little lower than face to face piano lessons.
For example, if you use a tuition marketplace like Tutorful to search for an online tutor our avg. price for an online piano tutor is £26.
How much are ongoing piano lessons?
If you’re considering taking up block lessons, for example, 1 lesson per week for a total of 8 weeks or 2 lessons per week for 1 month, it may be worth discussing with the piano tutor whether they offer block booking discounts. They may be in a position to offer that, it’s important to remember that most piano tutors are self-employed and don’t always have the ability to offer discounts.
If you’re looking for a piano tutor there are a number of websites that help you find tutors in near you, most allow you to send messages tutors directly to chat about what you’re looking for.
