How Much Does it Cost to go to Rome?

Rome is one of the oldest and most popular cities in the world. Even though the city is packed with tourists at all times of the year, it’s still a must-see destination for many people. Due to its popularity, travellers wonder how much does it cost to go to Rome? You might be surprised to learn that your costs won’t be too bad there.

Generally speaking, most people who visit Italy have to make a stop in Rome as it’s the major entry and exit point for the country. The city itself is usually a small part of a bigger Italy or Europe trip so for the purpose of this article, I’m going to suggest four nights. That might seem too long for a lot of people, but the first day/night is when you arrive so you likely won’t do much. At a minimum, you’ll want to do at least two full days.

I’m not going to include any day trips, but you can check out my guide on how much does it cost to go to Italy for more inspiration. Here’s what a Rome trip cost looks like.

Rome trip cost

Estimated cost
Airfare$600
Accommodations$480
Local transportation$30
Attractions$100
Food and drink$140
Random spending$40
Total$1,390 USD

The above estimate is in American dollars, so use xe.com to find out the average costs in your home currency. I’ve also estimated things above for a solo traveller. If you’re travelling with someone, double all the costs except for accommodations.

Airfare

Airfare will be your largest expense when visiting Rome, but isn’t that the case when you fly to any destination? As mentioned, you’ll probably fly to Rome as part of a bigger Italy trip, so don’t worry about airfare costs too much.

Accommodations

Need some hotel recommendations? Here are some to help you get started.

Private apartment rentals are also pretty popular in Rome. You should look into them if you want a kitchen or a little more space. Seeing how you’re only going to be in Rome for a few days, getting a hotel will likely be easier.

Local transportation

Here’s the funny thing, depending on where you stay, you may not need to take public transportation. The historic centre is about a 30-minutes or less walk from every major attraction. If you’re staying near Termini, you might only take transit to the Vatican.

A single ride will cost you €1.50 ($1.60) or you can get a 24-hour pass for €7.00 ($7.60). Tickets can be purchased tobacconists (newsstands), bars, or vending machines at Metro stations and even at major bus stops

Attractions

The saying is that Rome is one giant open free museum and it’s true. But, if you want to go into any sites, you’ll need to pay. The good news is that most of the admission prices are pretty reasonable. Here are some of the most popular attractions you’ll want to check out.

The reason you want to book a tour for the Vatican Museums is that it allows you to bypass the line. Yes, you’ll pay about double the base admission, but you could end up saving 1-2 hours of waiting in a line and you get an official guide. It’s totally worth it.

For the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, buy a combined ticket online in advance. You’ll want to do this just to skip the lines. The other attractions that are worth paying for, especially if you’re a fan of art are Borghese Gallery and Capitoline Museums.

If you prefer just to do free things, you won’t be disappointed. You can see one of the most overhyped attractions in the world in the Spanish Steps and one of the most crowded attractions at the Trevi Fountain. The Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Largo di Torre Argentina, Piazza Venezia, Piazza del Popolo and Piazza di Siena.

Food and drink

I personally love Italian food so visiting Rome is always a joy for the taste buds. What I’ve learned over the years is that the quality of food can vary quite a bit. I’ve been to restaurants that are packed but once I ate the food, I realize it’s catering to tourists and not very good. My most memorable meal was at a small restaurant in Trastevere just off the main street. It was like an Italian grandmother feeding me. Always read reviews online before you go into a restaurant and keep in mind that service is sometimes already added to the bill

I don’t find food to be that expensive, but it depends on how much you like to eat. Here’s what I estimate you should spend every day on meals.

Random spending

Like any other major city, Rome has plenty of shopping opportunities, but I don’t find there to be anything special. Sure, you might spend money on some brands you don’t have at home, but that’s just regular shopping.

What is the best way to find cheap flights to Rome Italy?

The key is to be flexible if you can.

If you are flexible with your airline, number of stops you will make (and where!), and even willing to change your itinerary just a bit, you will have an easier time finding discount flights to Rome.

How to find and book cheap flights to Rome Italy

Ready to book your flights and hotels to Rome now? Start here:

If you’re looking to save on airfare on your trip to Rome, there are various ways to go about this.

If you’re flying from another European country, you probably already know about discount flights with carriers like RyanAir, Easyjet, Vueling, etc.

If you’re flying from overseas, you may be looking at flights with larger, major carriers like Delta, Lufthansa, Etihad, etc. But it’s possible to get cheap flights to Rome from the USA, Canada, and other non-European countries.

Here are some tips you can use to save on airfare to Rome.

How to keep ticket costs down when booking a flight to Rome

Another thing you can do to keep costs down is to not check bags (I am always amazed at my parents who are super-experts at this! It’s definitely a bonus when you land not to have to worry about hanging around a luggage carousel waiting for your bags.)

I know it’s not easy but it can be done!

At the very least, you can keep luggage surcharges at bay by making sure you do not pack over the weight limit.

For more about what to pack for Rome, visit my page here.

Visit our dedicated pages about what to pack for Rome for every month:

No matter what season you visit Rome, here are 4 things never to leave at home:

Most of winter in Rome is low season, with the exception of the Christmas holiday season.

So if you can visit during these winter, non-holidays dates, you have a pretty good chance of finding cheap flights to Rome Italy, along with cheap hotel/apartment prices to boot!

Visit my dedicated pages for all the winter months in Rome

Besides getting cheap airfare during those months, you are also more likely to find your flight less crowded, and Rome itself to be less crowded as well.

Airfare comparison websites

If you want to find cheap flights to Rome Italy, your best bet is to use a website that compares fares.

Many of these sites are now equipped to send you price alerts so you can track when a price drops.

Two of my favorite sites for comparing airfares and getting price alerts are Kayak and an oldie but a goodie, Expedia.

Flexibility is key when looking for cheap flights to Rome Italy

If you can be flexible in your dates, and even with the number of stops you are willing to make, you will be more likely to find cheap tickets to Rome.

I’ve had numerous friends visit Rome over the years, and some have found amazing bargains by coming via Iceland, Moscow, and Dubai. Sometimes this can make your ticket cost go way down.

Cheap flights to Rome Italy from other parts of Europe

Depending on where you fly from, you may find a better deal getting a cheap ticket to Rome if you can come from another European city.

If you are flying to Europe from overseas, and can get a good fare into a major hub city, such as London, Dublin, Copenhagen, Berlin, or Amsterdam, you can then switch airlines (even airports in many cases), and get on a low-cost carrier, or even a regular European carrier, that will take you to Rome for a lower airfare than if you’d connected on your into-Europe airline.

If you are flexible in your travel plans, you could also get the added bonus of visiting another city before or after your Rome trip.

The downside of this is that when you connect to a different carrier (or airport), and it’s not all part of the same ticket, you are out of luck and on your own if your original flight is delayed and you miss your connection. (And this is one reason of many that I urge you to consider getting travel insurance!)

But if you’re looking for cheap flights to Rome Italy, and can be flexible, this can be a great way to save!

Budget airlines flying to Rome Italy

Europe is now teeming with many low-cost carriers that fly to Rome (but they only fly from other European cities.)

Some budget airlines that fly to Rome from other parts of Europe include RyanAir, Easyjet, German Wings, Vueling, and Wizz Air.

But you might be surprised to find that major carriers are competing with these low-cost carriers to Rome, and in some cases, you can get cheap Rome flights from other European cities even on one of the major carriers (and get your airline miles!)

Also, note that a lot of the budget airlines offer super low flights that are devoid of ANYTHING but the airfare.

You want an assigned seat? It’s extra. You want to bring a carryon bag on? It’s extra. And so on.

So again if you are flying to Rome from overseas, you might look at two separate trips, one into a European hub city, and then another R/T from there to Rome and back with a budget or local carrier.

Cheap transportation into Rome from the airport

Rome has two airports, Fiumicino and Ciampino.

Fiumicino is the major international airport, with flights arriving from overseas.

Ciampino is the smaller airports with flights arriving mostly from other European cities and via the budget airlines.

But if you booked flights to Rome Italy, you could fly into either one.

And getting into Rome from the airport can have varying costs so here’s how to get into the center if you’re on a budget:

One more cool site for trip planning

Whether or not you’re looking for cheap flights to Rome Italy, I recently discovered this site, Rome2Rio, which literally shows you how to get from your house to your hotel in Rome.

It includes things like public transportation, walking between a bus and train station, etc. It’s pretty cool once you figure out how to use it!

Rome On a Budget

Rome is the capital and largest city in Italy. It is also a common entry point for most visitors flying into the country. Rome has been a center of power, culture, and religion for the last millenium, making it one of the most famous and popular destinations in not only Europe, but the world. The influence of the Roman Empire can be seen across continents.

Today, the historic city center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spread throughout the city you will find palaces, churches, ruins, monuments, fountains and more. Despite this rich and ubiquitous historical vibe, the city is also very cosmopolitan. It’s a beautiful place with a vibrant atmosphere, excellent nightlife, world class shopping, and delicious food. It is not hard to see why Rome has attracted visitors from around the globe for so long.

Rome is a popular travel destination throughout the year, but crowds are most intense during the summer months. Spring and fall can be cooler in temperature and slightly less crowded, making them an ideal time to visit. It used to be that the city shut down for two weeks in the month of August while residents took their own vacations, but this tradition has changed. Shops, restaurants, and attractions are generally open throughout the entire summer. In the less touristy, more residential areas you may still encounter some closed doors.

Prices may show some seasonal variation, but for the most part, you won’t see prices dip too dramatically during the low season. The one exception to this is plane tickets, which tend to be the highest during the summer months. Part of the problem is that there really is no low season in Rome. It’s a popular tourist destination year round. The fall, when many people think crowds will drop off, is actually one of the most popular times to visit. Winter may be a bit less crowded, but the holidays again bring the crowds.

Rome attracts all types of travelers and as a large city, it has something for every budget. You’ll likely spend at least a few days in Rome if you plan to enter or leave from here. For budget travelers, there is no shortage of hostels in Rome, many of which are concentrated around the main train station (Termini). There are also plenty of cheap eateries where you can grab a sandwich or slice of pizza without paying too much. Rome does have a small subway system that is good for traveling across town, but buses may be a better option if you don’t want to walk between sights. Fortunately, many sights can be visited on foot, so you’ll really have little need to public transportation if you’re up for a walking tour.

Sights

It is impossible to list all of the major landmarks throughout Rome. You could easily spend days wandering through the city, taking in the sites and learning about the impressive history. If you happen to be in town during mid-May, you may overlap with the «Settimana dei Beni Culturali», when every landmark, archaeological site and museum that is run by the government is open, free of charge. Even if you’re not in town during this time, most of the city’s main attractions are always free. Museums may be the exception to the rule and it is possible to buy full day passes, or three day passes that include the Colosseum, Palatine hill, the Baths of Caracalla, and the catacombs among other things.

If you’re looking for the best views of the city, head to the top of the Vittoriano. You can access it by climbing to the mid level terraces of the building and then paying 7 euros to reach the very top. It is worth the money for the breathtaking views though.

Neighborhoods

Rome can be divided into several different districts. The historical center is only about 4% of the entire city, but is where most tourists spend the majority of their time. The Modern Center is where there are many hotels, shopping, and restaurant options. This is also where the Quirinal, Trevi fountain, and piazza Berberini are. In Old Rome there are many squares and cathedrals, as well as the Pantheon, Campo de’ Fiori, and the former Jewish Ghetto. The Vatican is its own, independent area. Just south of the Vatican is Trastevere, with narrow, cobblestoned streets. Colosseo, where the famous Colosseum is located also has the Imperial Fora and the Capitoline Hill. The Spanish Steps and Villa Borghese are found in the North Center. Other districts include Aventino-Testaccio, Esquilino-San Giovanni, and Nomentano.

Activities
Food and Dining

Food in Rome is excellent. Although it can be overpriced in the historic center, it is still hard to find a bad meal. For your best options though, head further out of the city center and eat where the locals eat. Ask for recommendations and find small restaurants and cafes that are hidden away in hard to reach areas. Another money saving option is to buy some ready made food and enjoy a picnic in a scenic location, of which there are many.

Do take note that the once common coperto and servizio charges are now illegal in Rome and the surrounding Lazio region. Specifically, the coperto charge is always illegal, while the servizio charge may be applied if it is clearly marked on the menu.

Transportation

Rome is served by the large and busy FCO airport, as well as others. Fast and affordable trains from the airport can take you to/from Termini station in the city center.

If you’re sticking to the city center, the best way to get around is by walking. There area is compact and very scenic, so you may as well enjoy the atmosphere and walk from attraction to attraction.

There is also good public transportation in Rome. There is a wide variety of options including buses, trams, trolleybuses, the metro, and light rail, all of which are managed by ATAC. The buses are generally reliable, but crowded and are usually your best option around the city center, unless you plan to walk. The tram has six lines. Most older cars are not air conditioned and tickets cannot be purchased on board. Vending machines sell tickets before you board the tram. The newer cars are the exception, and do have vending machines and air conditioning on board. The metro and light rail systems are good options if you’re going further out of the city center. Two of the three (and a half) metro lines (lines A and B) cross at Termini.

How Much Does a Family Trip to Italy Cost? [+ Budget Worksheet]

I have traveled to Italy five times and I have also planned about two dozen vacations to Italy for other families. Over the course of years, I have developed a really good sense of the prices of hotel rooms, tours, and transportation in Italy. So when someone asks me how much does a trip to Italy cost, I can rattle these numbers off pretty quickly.

Since budgeting is such a HUGE part of planning a trip, I thought I would lay it out for you and break down the average Italy trip budget to make it easy for you to plan — I’ve even included a helpful budget worksheet to get you started. Italy is a popular travel destination and while not as cheap as Ireland or Portugal, it isn’t as expensive as London or Paris. (See this post if you need help creating a family travel budget!)

Before we jump into figuring how much a trip to Italy costs, let’s first dive into a few budgeting and travel tips to keep in mind when planning a trip to Italy:

Italy Budget Assumptions

For this example budget, I have based these expenses on a family of four. This imaginary family consists of two adults and two children between the ages of 6-11 and lives near a major airport hub in the USA. When planning your own trip budget, make adjustments as needed to suit your specific travel companions and travel style.

I’m going to assume that this family is traveling in the summer months, since that is when most families visit Italy, and they aren’t strictly budget travellers, but they are comfortable with three to four-star accommodations. Of course traveling in the shoulder season would save money, but most families don’t have the flexibility or the budget for luxury hotels.

I’m also going to base this on a 12-day trip, with four nights in Rome and one-week in Tuscany, which is a great first trip to Italy with kids this age. If you plan on visiting Venice, the Amalfi Coast, the Dolomites, Lake Como, or the Cinque Terre, expect to spend even more on accommodations and food.

The budget for a trip to Italy is made up of the following elements:

So while this budget may sound a lot higher than others that you will find online, I also think it is much more realistic. Like everything when it comes to family travel, I’ve tried to strike a balance between budget and enjoyment.

Airfare to Italy

Of course, if you have flexibility in when you travel (both time of year and/or days of the week), sign up for a flight deal service so you can jump on new sales when they happen. Generally you will find better deals if you travel in and out to Rome on a round-trip ticket and if you can travel midweek versus the weekend.

To save money, consider booking on a budget airline. Even non-direct flights can save you money, such as flying TAP Airlines through Lisbon or IcelandAir through Reykjavik. Sometimes you can also find cheap flights to London or Dublin and then you can hop on a cheaper European carrier like EasyJet or Ryan Air from there. Just be sure to always pay attention to those added fees and baggage weights/sizes when you are trying to find the best deal.

Of course, what we always try to do is save up our travel points that we earn on our credit card and use those to wipe out the cost of at least one or two of the airfares (see my favorite credit cards for earning points).

Accommodations

Accommodations can be pricey, especially in Rome and other major cities in Italy. Keep in mind that very few hotels can accommodate a family of four in one hotel room. This can often mean you will need two rooms or a pricey suite. I’ve found that it is usually cheaper to get two smaller rooms then to get a large enough suite to accommodate a family.

Some other hotels that offer a family room or suite at an affordable price include:

Tuscany

With an agriturismo, you will have a self-catering apartment on a working farm. Generally there is a shared pool and they may even offer things like breakfast or an on-site cooking class. Kids usually love this type of accommodation because it is authentic and there is room to play and sometimes farm animals roaming around. Not every property has a pool so if this is important to you, be sure to read the descriptions carefully.

Just keep in mind that agriturismos and many vacation rentals in Tuscany require a seven-night, Saturday-to-Saturday night stay. So if you fly into Italy on a Saturday morning, you would drive right from the airport into Tuscany and then finish your vacation in Rome.

When selecting an agriturismo, be sure to look into if room air conditioners or fans are available, as those are not typically found in these traditional farmhouses. Also learn what dining options are available. Does the stay include breakfast or is it entirely self-catered? If there is dinner available, does it need to be organized in advance? This is often the case because the meals are cooked by the owners and ingredients need to be purchased that day. Not many agriturismos offer a full-service restaurant, but some that focus more on the hotel portion of the property may have limited services.

Transportation

If you are spending a week in Tuscany, you are going to need a car. I recommend using Auto Europe to find the best rates across vendors. You should also book early as prices fluctuate and will continue to rise the closer you get to departure. Ideally, book by the end of January, especially if you want an automatic as the inventory is quite limited since most Europeans drive stick.

Since you don’t want to drive in Rome, I would recommend arriving on Saturday morning, picking up your rental at the FCO airport and driving to your accommodations in Tuscany. Then, on the following Saturday, drop your rental back off at the Rome airport and then catch a cab or arrange a car service into the city and then back out on your departure. A car service to/from the airport will run approximately 75 euro and a cab is closer to 50 euro. You can also take a train from the airport to the Termini station in Rome, but I wouldn’t really recommend staying in that neighborhood so you will probably need to get a cab from there anyway.

You could also take a regional train from Rome to Florence and get a rental car there. Train travel in Italy is pretty easy (just make sure you validate your train ticket before you board!) but when you are staying in the countryside, you are going to need a car. Just remember to beep before going around those tight, blind turns in Tuscany! Another transportation alternative is to fly into Florence and pick up a car there, and drop it off in Rome after your stay in Tuscany, but I find direct flights to and from Rome cheaper, at least from the USA.

When pumping gas in Italy, make sure you know if the car is diesel or unleaded. I’ve seen some disasters after people put regular gas into a diesel car!

Tours and Activities

If you want to save money, you can book a small group tour. Companies like LivItaly offer small groups of no more than six people and Walks of Italy’s small groups are less than 12.

In Rome, I would highly recommend tours for the following attractions:

If budget allows, I would add tours for the following:

Luckily, when you are in Tuscany it is easy to spend the week taking day trips to visit towns like Lucca, Pisa, Siena, San Gimignano, Montepulciano, Montalcino, and Pienza. However, you may want to think about a family-friendly wine or food/cheese tour with a company like Tuscan Organic Tours or a bike tour with On the Road in Chianti.

However, at a minimum you will want to take a day trip into Florence and take a tour of the city or get skip-the-line tickets to the Accademia and/or Uffizi, as well as pre-book timed entry tickets to climb the Duomo.

The price of food can vary, but if you stay away from the highly touristic areas (this means walk a block or two away from any main attraction), there are plenty of affordable and delicious options. Keep in mind that a trattoria or an oesteria is less formal and less expensive than a ristorante. You can also usually purchase pizza or panini and take them to go for picnics or inexpensive, casual meals.

Also, if you order your coffee and pastry at a bar and eat inside, it will be much cheaper than ordering table service and sitting outside on a piazza. That said, sometimes it is worth the price, especially when eating tartufo and people watching in Piazza Navona.

Souvenirs & Miscellaneous Expenses

While we would rather spend our travel budget on experiences versus things, there are some items which make perfect souvenirs from an Italy trip. These include: wooden toys, leather goods, purses/bags, painted ceramics, blown glass, lace and linens, wine, and olive oil.

Whether you’re flying into Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO) or Ciampino–G B Pastine International Airport (CIA), taxi, train or bus are your best options to get into central Rome from the airport – although your choice will depend whether speed, cost or convenience are most important.

Which Rome airport are you flying into?

Rome has two airports, so you first need to know where you’ll be landing. Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO) is the most likely choice; more than 85% of passengers flying to Rome arrive at this airport near the Mediterranean, some 35km west of Rome. All four terminals are convenient to the airport’s bus stop, train station and taxis.

Ciampino–G B Pastine International Airport (CIA), a small airport 12km southeast of Rome’s centre, is primarily served by budget airlines such as Ryanair and Wizz Air. It’s linked to central Rome by dedicated buses and a faster – although slightly complex – bus-train connection.

Both airports have WiFi.

What’s the best way to reach Rome from the airport?

Taxi, train or bus are your best options, although your choice will depend whether speed, cost or convenience are most important. Don’t bother renting a car; the only reason would be if you’re going elsewhere in Italy. Parking is a huge issue in Rome, along with traffic and an ancient, confusing road layout.

Getting from Fiumicino Airport to Rome Termini:

Taxi

This is simplest way to get to central Rome – although not recommended for people who are time- or budget-sensitive.

Train

The non-stop Leonardo Express from Fiumicino to Termini Station is usually the overall quickest and easiest choice – but the Regional Express FL1 train, which has eight stops into Rome, may be an even better choice for savvy travellers staying in other parts of the city. Both services are operated by Trenitalia.

Bus

Several companies make the run from the large bus stop area near Terminal 3 to Termini Station, with Terravision having the most frequent service. Fares are cheap, but the journey can be long given traffic on Rome’s roads. From Termini you can complete your journey via a taxi, local bus or metro.

NOTE: Don’t book your bus ticket in advance via the web as you may find a better offer once you’re at the bus stop.

Getting from Ciampino Airport to Rome Termini:

Taxi

The simplest way to reach central Rome, although not always the easiest and definitely not good for budget-conscious travellers.

Train

From Ciampino airport, an airport shuttle bus runs every 30 minutes, costs €1.20 (plus €1.20 for each piece of luggage) and takes five minutes to reach Ciampino city train station. From here, regular trains run direct to Termini.
