We like riding subways and other public transportation in big cities and watching people — trying to guess from their faces, their body language and their tension what they do, what they prioritize and what they are after in life.
We’ve watched business professionals in Santiago, Chile, and in Monterrey, Mexico, on the midafternoon train, heading home to have lunch with their kids and a siesta before heading back to the office to work for the evening.
We’ve watched career women in Manhattan, New York, and wondered how many of them are postponing having a family and children until they have made their mark on their career, maybe hopeful that they can then have a child in their late 30s or early 40s.
We’ve watched young millennials in Singapore and Shanghai, out for the glitz, the money, the «freedom,» and not thinking at all about family — particularly not one of their own. They work late because of the comforts and camaraderie of the workplace and because they have no home to go home to.
We’ve watched elderly people in Stockholm, where the majority of households are occupied by one single individual, and wondered how the government will provide for them as they age and have no children to take care of them.
And we’ve wondered what will happen to society if people continue to get less and less interested in having and caring for children in committed, long-term marriages. Who will do the essential tasks and perform the traditional roles of families? Will babies be produced by artificial means in laboratories, then nurtured and fed and raised in larger institutions, taught to love and be loyal to the state instead of to their family? Will the elderly all be in institutionalized care?
An interesting book by Alan Weisman, titled “The World Without Us,” theorizes on what Earth would be like without humans. An equally interesting question, with an equally frightening answer, is “what would the world be like without families?”
Most would agree that good families and stable homes contain at least four essential elements: love, commitment, time together and communication.
It is difficult to imagine a family succeeding over time or even staying together very long without at least a basic level of each of these four elements. When parents lack any of the four essential elements or when they fail to perform their traditional roles in families, we all lose — both as individuals and as a society. When larger institutions — from schools to businesses to government — try to assume these roles or elements, it alters the way we experience one another, diminishes relationships and undermines human happiness.
Larger institutions simply do not work like families. Love, commitment, time and communication are all defined differently in the corporate or government culture than they are in the family culture. As these larger entities grow and as they increasingly dominate our lives, we sometimes look to them to provide what families used to provide.

Describe your first mobile phone.
IELTS Cue Card Sample Answer Describe Your First Mobile Phone
I was about 16 when I got my first mobile phone. It was a Motorola Flip-phone. That was quite some time ago now. Mobile phones were much more basic then and very different from the smartphones we have nowadays.
Actually, I didn’t buy it. It was a gift from my parents when I finished my exams at school. They bought it for me when I graduated. I remember it very well because some of my friends had mobile phones but not all of them.
That was when mobile phones were beginning to become really popular – essential really – but people used them differently.
We used to make more calls or send SMS text messages to each other whereas now I mostly send texts or emails through various platforms and rarely actually call someone using my mobile.
When my parents gave it to me I felt very happy and proud because it was the latest model, at that time, so it had some new features which my friends’ phones didn’t have.
I think I kept it for around three years before I replaced it with an iPhone. But it was still special because it was my first mobile so it was kind of important for me.

Yes, it’s extremely convenient, and essential, nowadays. It would be difficult to survive in today’s world without one. It’s just so useful for everything.
Is it a good or a bad thing to have a mobile phone? Why?
People take photos, search for information and shop online using their mobiles, they do banking and communicate for work and many other things also.
It’s a really important thing, just like having a car, it would be difficult to do many things without it.
What can you do with a mobile phone?
Well, like I said before, you can search for information on the internet, you can pay bills and do banking, you can shop and buy things online and obviously, you can email, text and call people you know.
Many phones allow you to listen to music, watch videos, navigate and use other apps depending on what you’re interested in.
I have about 50 different apps loaded on my phone so I can video chat, learn English, translate, and do other activities.
Do old and young people use mobile phones in the same way?
Generally, no, I think older people tend to still call someone when they want to talk. Younger people prefer to send texts.
I’m not sure if older people use as many apps or functions of their mobile phones as young people do or take as many pictures.
Older people still see a mobile phone as basically a way to communicate with another person. Younger people use it as part of living, as an everyday tool to enable them to do things.
What can be done to avoid children becoming inattentive in class?
Because of mobile phones? The school should have a policy for mobile phones in the classroom. Students shouldn’t be permitted to have their phones on when they are in lessons, but be allowed to use them between classes and in breaktime.
Or at least schools should require that mobile phones are muted while students are in class so nobody gets distracted by them ringing.

How do you describe your mobile phone?
My phone is an iPhone X, which is robust and sturdy. Its strength comes from the aluminum alloy that makes up a majority of its frame. My phone also has a Retina display that features True Tone and 3D Touch, but it lacks OIS (optical image stabilization).
Overall, it feels cool using an iPhone because they are very sleek and incorporate the latest technology.
What are some good words to describe a mobile phone?
The iPhone X, like the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8+, is made of glass. And Apple’s used a seven-layer process to put it all together. The phone has an oleophobic coating, which resists grease or oil on the surface of the phone with its internal fluoropolymers. It has a sensor that ‘knows’ when any oil touches the screen, so you won’t have to worry about smudging up your favorite game app or such as Siri could read your texts without damaging your device display.
You can also call on Siri just by tapping in the lower-left corner of the screen for instant help with anything from telling you who wrote one of Shakespeare’s plays to faking an ID.
Mobile phones
Maria: Rory do you think we should set up laws and regulations on the use of mobile phones?
Rory: Well, on the face of it, it seems like a good idea, given the negative effects they sometimes have. But I’m not sure it’s something that you could legislate for very well, given how… Well they’re pretty much endemic at this stage. So it’s probably easier to work around the problem to try and solve it. So with that in mind, it’s maybe better that parents or guardians are encouraged to take control of the situation and educate their kids about how to use mobile phones effectively.
Maria: Do you think children should have mobile phones?
Rory: No. I’m not a parent but when I am I’m not gonna let my children have mobile phones, at least not for the first few years of their lives. I think it’s a real barrier to the enjoyment of being a child and parent should be really careful about letting their kids use them. I think child locks and sort of other protective mechanisms like that are a great idea for young people in particular, just because it protects them from doing something stupid or ill-advised. Because young people don’t know what they’re doing on the Internet or with mobile phones and they can get themselves into serious trouble. So it’s important their parents educate them as much as possible about how to use them sensibly first.
Maria: In your opinion at what age should we give a cell phone to a child.
Rory: Well, given how some people behave when they’re using them, maybe no one should be allowed to have them ever. But if I think about it seriously, in general, probably, like, the mid to late teens when you start beginning to act like a responsible adult, but still with some supervision and education about how to use them properly. But I don’t really agree with this idea of parents giving phones to children who are 5 or 6 years old. I don’t see the point in that. You have a mobile phone to get in touch with people, but you who do you need to get in touch with when you’re 6 years old? Your parents should be looking after you!
Maria: Why do some people dislike using text messages?
Rory: Well I think for some people it’s hard for them to articulate their thoughts in writing. So I think they opt for voice messages and calls instead because that’s easier for them. It can be annoying sometimes because it’s a lot more demanding on the time of the person who’s getting the call or the voice message. But you know, if you want to get your message across clearly and that’s the priority then maybe this is a good idea for them.
Maria: Why do some people prefer texting as compared to phone calls like, we never call each other, you know, we just text.
Rory: Well, I suppose for the opposite reasons of what I just said. If we think about texting it’s it’s easier to put a small text message together. It’s shorter, it’s usually self-contained, and people who are sending texts to can control the intrusion into their life and time more easily. So I think it’s probably better if you’re someone who values your time and using it effectively you know there’s usually no need to answer a text message immediately, whereas if it’s a call then you do need to answer immediately.
Maria: Do you think modern technology has any negative influence on communication?
Rory: Oh, definitely. For example, like, it removes body language and nuance from the equation. In some ways that can probably lead to confusion if you don’t communicate very well. And then some people feel a lot freer to express their opinions and say things which they would never say in real life which can be quite disappointing and hurtful. Although, I suppose since it’s usually through technology it’s easier to get over than if someone was saying horrible things to you in person. So with those two examples in mind there are definitely some downsides to this, for sure.
Maria: What do you think are some of the main differences between the written communication and spoken communication?
Rory: Well, probably… No, definitely, everything connected to conveying meaning through pronunciation and body language, although we’ve, like, the advent of emojis is designed to help with this, so people can convey their emotions clearly. But there’s still a bit of a barrier to overcome in that sense. The structure of written spoken communication is actually quite different, now that I think about it. For example, you repeat yourself more when you speak. You use different expressions, some vocabulary is different, you use more slang and colloquial terms when you’re speaking as opposed to when you’re writing. To be honest, people have probably written lots of books about the differences between these two things. But I think those are the big things that come to mind when you ask this question to me.
Maria: Rory what about the future of mobile phones? What will happen in the future? Will babies be using mobile phones? Or they’ll disappear like dinosaurs?
Rory: Well I think we’ll probably always need some kind of mobile communication device. Whether it’ll be a mobile phone that you can hold in your hand or not is probably not the case. I imagine like 50 years down the line we’ll probably have something different. Maybe something that’s even integrated with our bodies, to be honest. And there are lots of discussions around that. I think it’d be quite cool, though. I mean, you could carry around more effectively. But as long as you only get it at a responsible age where you know what you’re doing with it.
