I was 8 and started driving stick on my own little grocery excursions when I was 11 (I looked older). Funny thing was, it was my mom’s own laziness that she would ask me to run to the store.
I became legal at 15, despite getting into a fender-bender on the way home from the DMV. It wasn’t my fault, I swear! Some guy backed into me.

i got my license when i was 16. it was interesting because, having a very late birthday for my grade (october- i was 17 graduating high school), i was still on schedule with most of the people in my school as in NJ the license age is 17, but i was getting my license in PA because my dad was in the army and had residency there.
i’ve only been in one accident that involved another person (had a few spin outs) and it didn’t really cause damage to their car, and not enough to mine to warrant an insurance claim..
one speeding ticket (which was kind of a joke anyways. ) not too horrible (8 years later)

I started driving at 16, in Canada it gets broke down as follows;
• G1 at 16 (allowed to drive with a person who’s had their G for at least four years)
• G2 at 17 (allowed to drive by yourself, but have to have zero blood alcohol and are responsible for people wearing seat belts)

Here in australia you can get your learners permit at 16 and go for your liscense when 18 after 120hours of driving on your learners.
Well yeah im 17 now and up to like 30 hours out of 120
haha, me too! My father had a Camaro and I remember driving it siting on his knees. Good ol’ times, now kids needs an helmet, a body armor and an anti-nuclear shelter to enter in a car.
I drive manual, but I regret it because of all the trafic here. My next car will be automatic. We can have our apprentice license here at 16 years old,
I started learning when I was 13.
I tried driving at 15 or 16. But I learned at 18. Also got my license at 18. Learned on an automatic. My first car I bought was 5 speed. Now my current car is also 5 speed. I don’t know how people can drive automatic. It’s so boring. When I drive anybody else’s car, I don’t know what to do. I’m so used to shifting, popping the clutch in, throwing it in neutral & coasting, that when I sit there & literally just have to move my foot alittle between pedals, I get bored & have no idea what to do.
Learned at 15 via Drivers Ed.
Where I live, it’s basically clutch-first speed, first speed, brake, clutch-neutral, clutch-first speed, first speed, brake, clutch-neutral, clutch-first speed, first speed, brake, clutch-neutral. Everyday, for 2 hours. It drive me insane.
14 I learned how to drive automatic.
Grew up on a farm and my grandfather bought me a John Deere Gator 6×4 to drive to work, I was working on a horse farm like 2 miles away and I used it for feeding the horses and mucking paddocks.
Started driving real cars when I was 17, still automatics, my brothers had manuals but wouldn’t teach me how to drive them because I was having a pain in the ass time remembering how to shift on their ATVs. Didn’t learn manual until I was 23 driving my exes truck to and from work one week while he had the flu.

How old were you when you learned to drive?
As the title states, how old were you when you first started driving?
Did you start on stick or automatic?
Me, I think I was 14 driving an automatic in the backwoods when camping and my dad had a few beers. I didn’t learn stick till I was 15 and did my drivers ed in a stick.
I just took my daughter out, she is 12, went to the high school parking lot and let her go with my truck. 5 speed and all and it only took 3-4 attempts before she figured out the gas+clutch for take off. Over the course of the next hour she only killed 3-4 more times and most of that was trying to start on an uphill.
At about 14-15 I had my first driving experience. I learnt how to properly drive at about 16 on automatic.
19, learnt on a manual, been driving manual ever since. Parents recently got an automatic because it was supposidly a bargain buy and they needed to replace their car, turns out it wasn’t such a bargain after all (they’ve had no end of trouble with it). It’s a BMW btw, always hated them! Gimmie an Audi anyday
BMW is shit for the last 10 years IMO. Even Mercedes has kinda gone to shit unless you pick up the AMG series.
After driving my buddies Audi TT, I can say I like the quattro and the powertrain, but I’ve seen better suspension on a golf cart.
was being taught to drive around 9-10 yrs old
I was 16. I started on an automatic. My dad taught me how to drive. Every sunday for about 5 weeks or so, he’d come pick me up and we would go to an empty school parking lot where I would drive around, practicing parking, and basically keeping it on the road. My dad and I had a really rough relationship prior to this, and it definitely paved the way to the relationship we have today, which is much better. I remember when he finally wanted me to attempt to drive on the highway, and I was absolutely terrified. I couldn’t do it. I froze and pulled over. He eventually talked me into it. That was 10 years ago. It’s kind of nice to sit back and think about it all, but it’s also terrifying, because I can’t believe it’s been 10 years already.. where the hell did the time go?!

Was it called something like «Driving School»? I seem to remember a programme called that, with an old woman called Maureen who couldn’t drive for ****, and her husband was a despairing bus-driver!
Very tabloid though.

That’s exactly it! I remember Maureen, man she was a bad driver. Quite a sad case that one.
Anyway, good luck with your test. I hope you get a good instructor and pass.

. like most high school kids taking driver’s ed as was the case in the 1970s in california. i don’t know if that’s still the case of if someone could drive younger
in rural areas like mine, some kids were permitted a license earlier since they had to drive farm equipment and trucks a couple of years earlier

Read as: I can’t drive, nor do I have a license.

Got my learner licence at 17. Minimum age is 15, but I simply didn’t need one earlier. Didn’t get around to getting my «full» until 20.
