How people choose a career

You are going to give a talk about choosing a career. You will have to start in 1,5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10-12 sentences). Remember to say:

— how people choose a career;

— when people usually begin making plans for the future;

— how we can prepare for the future profession;

— what your choice of future profession is.

You have to talk continuously.

Finishing school millions of young people begin their independent lives. They usually start making their future career choices from finding out all the possible advantages and disadvantages of their future profession. Some people follow their own choice, at the same time others follow their parents` advice.

As far as I know, people usually begin making plans for the future asking themselves: “What do I want to be when I grow up/ leave school?” We can address this question as many times as necessary until we have a definite answer. Then we can consider all the details and start preparing for the future profession. First of all, your job should seem interesting to you. I believe that an exciting job that you like is a very important component of happiness in life. Secondly, you should understand what skills and knowledge you need to have to do the job. You must be well-educated and well-informed. That is the reason why people should be attentive and careful in their choices, being able to study and work hard to succeed.

I have already decided what to do. I would like to become a doctor. This profession is very noble and highly respectful. I understand that I need to be good at biology and chemistry, to become a good doctor and help people who have problems with health.

With thousands of options, how will you choose a career that’s right for you? If you don’t have any idea what you want to do, the task may seem insurmountable. Fortunately, it isn’t. Follow an organized process and you will increase your chances of making a good decision.

Key Takeaways

Assess Yourself

Before you can choose the right career, you must learn about yourself. Your values, interests, soft skills, and aptitudes, in combination with your personality type, make some occupations a good fit for you, and others completely inappropriate.

Use self-assessment tools, and career tests to gather information about your traits and, subsequently, generate a list of occupations that are a good fit based on them. Some people choose to work with a career counselor or other career development professionals who can help them navigate this process.

Make a List of Careers To Explore

You probably have multiple lists of occupations in front of you at this point—one generated by each of the self-assessment tools you used. To keep yourself organized, you should combine them into one master list.

First, look for careers that appear on multiple lists and copy them onto a blank page. Title it «Occupations to Explore.»

If your self-assessments indicated a career is a good fit for you based on several of your traits, it’s worth exploring.

Next, find any occupations on your lists that appeal to you. They may be careers you know a bit about and want to explore further. Also, include professions about which you don’t know much. You might learn something unexpected.

Explore the Careers on Your List

At this point, you’ll be thrilled you managed to narrow your list down to only 10 to 20 options. Now you can get some basic information about each of the occupations on your list.

Find job descriptions and educational, training, and licensing requirements in published sources. Learn about advancement opportunities. Use government-produced labor market information to get data about earnings and job outlook.

For example, the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes «Career Outlook» analysis articles for many professions. These articles supplement the «Occupational Outlook Handbook» which also offers detailed statistics on career pay, growth trends, and more.

Create a «Short List»

Now you have more information, start to narrow down your list even further. Based on what you learned from your research so far, begin eliminating the careers you don’t want to pursue any further. You should end up with two to five occupations on your «short list.»

If your reasons for finding a career unacceptable are non-negotiable, cross it off your list. Remove everything with duties that don’t appeal to you. Eliminate careers that have weak job outlooks. Get rid of any occupation if you are unable or unwilling to fulfill the educational or other requirements, or if you lack some of the soft skills necessary to succeed in it.

Conduct Informational Interviews

When you have only a few occupations left on your list, start doing more in-depth research. Arrange to meet with people who work in the occupations in which you are interested. They can provide firsthand knowledge about the careers on your short list.

Access your network, including LinkedIn, to find people with whom to have these informational interviews.

How to choose a career that’s perfect for you | Five helpful insider tips!

Deciding which profession suits you the best can be a difficult task. A poll by Huffington Post showed that 80% of employees in their 20s want to change their careers. So the question is: how to choose a career that you know you will love for the rest of your life.

Table of Contents

Some people say that if you make your passion your job, you will never have to work a day in your life. But others think you should build your career based on the skills you have. With so many confusing opinions about choosing a career path, it’s easy to get lost. But if you keep a few basic things in mind while researching, you should be fine.

In this post, we have compiled a list of 5 questions you should ask yourself while deciding which career to choose. Whether you’re just starting out or changing jobs, these tips on how to choose a career path will help you tremendously.

1) Where do my interests lie?

When faced with the challenge of how to choose a career for yourself, the first factor you should consider is what interests you. The right thing to do would be to take an inventory of the things that appeal to you most in terms of work. Start asking questions like-

Start by underlining the things you can do well and compare it with what you’ve done in the past (if you’re changing jobs). This will help you discover the skills that can help point you to the right career path.

2) Which skills set me apart?

Everyone has abilities and activities that they’re good at. So the question is: what are you good at? This is one of the most important tips on how to choose your career. Find out what your talents are from childhood and which skills you’ve picked up over time.

Skills can be divided into hard skills and soft skills. Hard skills refer to the skills you learned by studying, e.g. like graphic design or painting. Soft skills refer to people and life skills you have, e.g. time management or communication. Examine different career paths and find out the one that best compliments your talents and skills.

3) What are my strengths?

Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. Discover the things that make you unique and are most likely to help you succeed in a particular career path. It could be your ability to coach people, interpersonal skills, excellence at research, or something else altogether.

Personally, I suggest you create a list of these skills before choosing a career and get your family or friends to get an external perspective before you choose the strongest of them (your Unique Selling Point) and find out the career path that fits it most.

4) What do I want the most?

In trying to answer the “what career is right for me” question, you must be sure of who you really are by understanding your personality. Are you an introvert or an extrovert? Are you self motivated or do you need others to motivate you? And are you a thinker or an action taker? What is your temperament? These are some of the questions you must answer before you decide what you want the most.

5) What options do I have?

After you’ve assessed yourself with these 4 points, the only thing left to do is decide on the actual profession you’re going to choose. Find occupations that align with everything you’ve just learned about yourself.

Create a list of these professions based on the basic information and think if they offer you all you want. Do they offer the kind of lifestyle you want? Does the career match your professional expectations? These are some of the questions you should research while you shortlist your final occupation.

Last thoughts

These guidelines will tell you how to choose the right career. However, you also need to consider your education and training as each industry expects you to have attained a certain level of training or experience. Check the availability of jobs in each career path you decide to choose especially when you are new or trying to change jobs. And do not allow other people’s expectations to sway your decision. Your career is absolutely yours, so take your time and make the best decision for your future.

How Do People Actually Choose a Career?

CareerExplorer is a free career test made for success seekers and the curious minded.

I have spent every day of the last four years trying to build a better way for people to choose what career to go into. I’ve read hundreds of books on psychology, neuroscience and human development in order to learn about what core intrinsic factors matter in decision making. Our team has collected hundreds of millions of data points on labour pathways and how people enter careers.

Lots of people ask me who we compete against in our space. The real answer is that we aren’t competing against other products, we are competing against core human instincts and the social constructs that continue to produce extremely poor results.

In spite of our efforts to change this, there are three primary ways people choose a career in our current system:

By Accident

As unromantic as this sounds, this is the most common way of people entering a career. When people give advice to “network”, what they actually mean is “manufacture serendipity” and increase your chance of positive randomness.

I’ve heard countless stories of a random family member offering someone a job that leads to another job, which in turn leads to a career decision. Randomness is so frequent in career decisions that Nassim Taleb could write a separate book on it.

If people want to give career advice, being in the right place at the right time should be it. While this strategy leads to random, unfitting careers, at least it leads to a path.

Through Apathy

I think it’s impossible to overstate how lost people truly are. Through misguided parenting and faults in our educational system, most people graduate from high school with absolutely no idea what to do. Being forced into earning money is an opposing force that combats apathy, but that’s a limited core strategy when it comes to making a career choice.

Another version of this is constant “education” through post-secondary systems. What to do if you aren’t sure what you want to do? Go back to school! Over and over again. Apathy also leads to many people in graduate school still trying to find something that interests them.

Apathy is dangerous because it usually leads to careers with limited entry friction. Most people in this category stumble into whatever they can get, not realizing their full potential or interacting with enough people to get lucky by accident.

Through Social Pressure

Parents and friends are the #1 and #2 career advice centres, respectively. 18+ years of being influenced by these groups —who in turn get their advice from their parents, friends and the media— leads to a lot of one thing: dogma.

A dogmatic approach to choosing a career is never a good idea. If your great-great-great-grandfather had some gripe with his local blacksmith, it’s possible that his hatred for the profession has been passed down through parenting. And now, for some reason, you think people who are welders are awful people.

You see this most acutely in the middle to upper-middle class of society. Lots of people go to university and study “socially acceptable” degrees to get “socially acceptable” jobs. Those jobs usually rhyme with investment banker, lawyer, accountant, doctor and consultant.

It’s much more terrifying to stand alone than it is to follow the crowd.

You’ll notice something about these three methods. They are all reactive strategies. Being purely reactive is what leads to 80% career dissatisfaction, countless career changes and unhappiness. There are only two ways to find a career that “fits”:

#1 is impossible to predict and plan, but #2 is something we can try to optimize. CareerExplorer was built for this reason.
