How quickly the tide turns
Have been playing for the entire week, yesterday I managed to kill all the «veteran» bosses I still hadn’t fought. Everything was going smoothly, had lost a few guys but overall I wasn’t doing too bad.
Then, rng decided to play me some tricks.
This morning, I run through the cove to farm some gold on a veteran mission. My 4 guys destroy everything on their path, and when only a few rooms are left I let my torch go out. I also find a secret room with 3 of those big purple stones which give you 2500 gold each. Then I find a collector and beat him despite the darkness, so I get another big purple stone. I scout, and apparently there’s only an hallway fight to beat before I can go back to the hamlet. I feel very confident, my dudes have max hp and low stress.
Then the hallway fight turns out to be a shambler, because apparently if you don’t use torches there is a very very small chance that you’ll fight shamblers in hallways. Shambler and his minions crit me so much it’s painful to remember and when two of my heroes die and my grave robber and occultist are left on their own with no melee skills equipped, they die aswell.
First party wipe in 67 hours of gameplay (36 in early access).
But at least those were only veterans, not champions, so it’s not that bad. But now I’m forced to do champion quests because most of my guys are lvl 5-6. The first quest goes fine, then my arbalest goes nuts in the next one. Things are desperate so I camp, she’s at death door. What happens is she refuses to eat while camping and dies of hunger while my other 3 guys are just chilling around the fire. Damn.
I do a few more quests until the necromancer lord becomes available. I have a good lvl 6 squad that should handle that boss quite well, so I start that quest. Mobs are now dodging most of my attacks while cultists and those skeletons with the goblets increase my stress. Man at arms goes nuts, then my vestal too. Bounty hunter goes stalwart because he’s the best guy in the whole roster. My crusader (Reynauld, the one you start the game with) is about to lose it but I’m confident that he is virtuous. And I’m so depressed because of the previous failings that I press on and fight the necromancer. Everyone is very stressed but with high hp. And necromancer is not that hard. We fight and the crusader goes Powerful, confidence surges as the necromancer lord is about to get rekt. Then, the rng god had the necromancer land 3 crits in a row, destroying any chance i have to kill him. So i retreat from the fight, everyone is still alive.
But as soon as we exit the room and I’m about to retreat back to the hamlet, man at arms has a heart attack and dies.
