40.1 Nowadays a lot of teenagers spend their free time reading books particularly there is a variety of book genres. The aim of the project I am currently working on is to find out what book genres are popular among teenagers in Zetland. As part of my project, I have found and analyzed some relevant data presented in the table.

According to the data, the teenagers in Zetland have quite a wide range of tastes when it comes to book genres. It is clear, that the vast majority of the respondents enjoy reading adventure novels as well as detective stories (55.4% and 55.3% respectively). Sports stories are also quite popular with the teenage readers (49.2%), whereas romantic novels appear to be at the bottom of the table.

It is worth mentioning that animal stories are two time less preferable than adventure novels. To my mind, books about animals are written mostly for little children, not for teenage readers.

Statistics reveal one problem connected with reading. Obviously, there are no classical books in the table. Thus, teenagers in Zetland prefer reading books for relaxation than broadening their horizons. One solution to this problem is to organize discussing clubs for the adolescents there they can meet professors and theater actors, read together and read serious books. Live communication encourages better than boring lessons.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that reading is significant for teenagers. I hope the adolescents will be able to learn more reading different book genres. (245 words)

40.2 Many people believe that smartphones have become an essential part of modern life. The aim of the project I am working on is to find out what people use their smartphones for in Zetland. As part of my project, I have found and analyzed some relevant data presented in the diagram.

According to the data, there is quite a wide range of reasons when it comes to using smartphones. It is clear, that the vast majority of the respondents enjoy emailing as well as making phone calls (79% and 78% respectively). Surfing the internet is also quite popular with the smartphone users (58%), whereas paying for purchases appears to be at the bottom of the table.

It is worth mentioning that smartphones are used for playing computer games less often than for emailing. To my mind, it is comfortable to be in touch everywhere when it comes to business. At the same time, gaming is the most popular pastimes among teenagers.

One problem that people often face using smartphones is the poor quality of signal in some areas. It is very crucial nowadays due to the internet is necessary for using all options that modern devices provide. One solution to this problem is to create free Wi-Fi zones in public places, such as libraries, railway stations, parks where people can spend their time effectively and gain access to the internet for free.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that smartphones play a significant role in our life. I hope people will use them wisely.

40.1 Today online communication has become an inseparable part of our lives. While doing a project on what social networks are used by teenagers in Zetland for communication, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

According to the diagram, Instagram tops the list with 33% of the adolescents in Zetland using it. Snapchat is the second most popular social media platform chosen by 32% of the surveyed. It should be noted that only 3% of the respondents like Twitter.

The polling percentage shows that using Instagram is almost 10 times more popular than Twitter and this is not surprising. Instagram offers such features as liking comments, replying to specific comments, asking questions and taking polls in Stories as well as sending direct messages. Unexpectedly, Facebook also seems to be one of the least preferred social media services with 5% of the surveyed.

Although social media applications seem to be more a friend than a foe, overusing them causes people to spend less time interacting face-to-face and this seems to be a problem. To solve the problem, people should try to meet more often offline. Seeing each other lets people pick up body language and therefore understand one another better.

To conclude, I believe that social media are extremely important for teenagers: they help them study, get entertained, share the latest news, socialize, make new friends and always stay in touch with their families, friends, teachers, etc. (243 words)

40.2 Listening to music has benefits for learning, mental health, and physical well-being. While doing a project on what pieces of classical music people in Zetland can recognize when they hear them, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

According to the diagram, the residents of Zetland are well acquainted with the music by Ludwig van Beethoven because 36% of them can easily recognize Fur Elise and 30% can identify Ode to Joy. It can also be seen that very few people know Flight of the Bumblebee by Rimsky-Korsakov and Clair de Lune by DeBussy with 4% and 2% of the respondents respectively.

The data analysis reveals that Wedding March by Mendelson, recognized by 28% of the surveyed, is only by 2% less famous than Ode to Joy by Beethoven. However, it is surprising that Clair de Lune by DeBussy is the least recognizable piece of music.

Although classical music has been time-tested, it is not favoured by teenagers and hence their emotional intellect does not develop properly. This definitely seems to be a problem. This problem can be solved by introducing compulsory music lessons in high school and by making TV adverts featuring celebrities listening to classical music. This could really encourage younger people to start liking listening to it.

In conclusion, I believe that listening to classical music is really important as its calming effect takes away nervousness, and can help you cope with stress. (244 words)

A project on how teenagers spend in Zetland their summer holidays

Imagine that you are doing a project on how teenagers spend in Zetland their summer holidays. You have found some data on the subject-the results of the opinion polls (see the table below)

Comment on the data in the table and give your opinion on the subject of the project.

How teenagers spend their summer holidaysNumber of teenagers (%)
Staying at home38
Visiting relatives27
Going to the seaside17
Going to the mountains15
Going to youth summer camp3

Write 200-250 words

Use the following plan:

Recent studies show that teenagers prefer to spend summer holidays differently. For my project, I have found some information about adolescents in Zetland. This data includes the result of the opinion polls illustrating how teenagers spend their summer vacation. In this essay I am going to analyze this information and express my own opinion about the best way of spending holidays.

There is a substantial difference between the most and the least popular ways of spending summer holidays. The number of teenagers who prefer staying at home is at 35 % more than ones who enjoy going to a youth summer camp. This can be explained by the fact that not all adolescents can afford to buy the tickets to the summer camp because of high cost.

One problem that teenagers can come across during summer holidays is the usage of different gadgets and the Internet for a long time which is really harmful for health. The best solution is to meet some friends, go for a walk and spend more time outside breathing fresh air.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that visiting new places and countries is the best way of spending summer holidays. Teenagers can broaden their minds and learn a lot of useful information.

40.1 Nowadays computer games are very popular among young people. The aim of the project I am currently working on is to find out why computer games are popular among teenagers in Zetland. As part of my project, I have found and analyzed some relevant data presented in the table.

According to the data, there is quite a wide range of reasons why younger generation is fond of video games. It is clear that looking for entertainment is at the top of the table, 46% of the respondents named it. Making new friends is also quite popular answer with 21%, whereas improving mental skills, developing hand-eye coordination and seeking relaxation appear to be the least popular reasons to play computer games.

It is worth mentioning that entertainment is two times more important for the adolescents than their self-development, such as improving mental skills and hand-eye coordination. Obviously, teenagers play computer games in their free time and they just want to have fun.

One problem that is usually associated with playing video games is a lot of violence they consume. So that young people may become aggressive gaming computer. One solution to this problem is to limit the access to these games for teenagers by law.

In conclusion, I think that computer games play an important role in teenagers’ life. All the more, there are different kinds of educational games. (228 words)

40.2 Recent studies show that teenagers think about taking a part-time job more often nowadays. The aim of the project I am currently working on is to find out why young people take a part-time job in Zetland. As part of my project, I have found and analyzed some relevant data presented in the diagram.

According to the data, there is quite a wide range of reasons what can motivate adolescents to spend their free time on working. It is clear that getting pocket money is the most popular answer, 40% of the respondents named it. Also, nearly a quarter of the teenagers (24%) start working in order to get work experience. At the same time, younger generation is not very interested in testing themselves.

It is worth mentioning that the teenagers think about acquiring new skills as well as learning more about different jobs almost three times less often than about pocket money they could get. Obviously, the adolescents in general do not consider their part-time job to become a way to start a career.

One problem can arise with a part-time job is that teenagers usually perform poorly at school. The main reason is that the adolescents cannot manage their time well, as a result they have not enough time to do their homework. One solution to this problem is to organize special centres where professionals help teenage workers with time management to be sure they can be successful in all this.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that a part-time job plays an important role in teenagers’ life. All the more, younger generation could get a great experience doing it. (271 words)

40.1 Spending free time has always been fun for teenagers. While doing a project on how teenagers in Zetland spend their free time, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

According to the diagram, approximately half of all the teenagers in Zetland, that is 47%, choose hanging out with friends as their favourite pastime. Watching movies comes second in popularity with 20% of the surveyed. Surprisingly, only 5% of the respondents like reading the same book to discuss it later, and it is the least preferred free time activity.

The data analysis reveals that shopping online, chosen by 16% of the respondents, is almost three times as popular as reading, whereas doing online shopping is by 4% more favoured than cooking, which is practised only by 12% of the teenagers. It is quite understandable why shopping online is far more preferable: it is convenient, time-saving and fun.

Although modern teenagers are quite active in going out together, they seem to neglect reading and this seems to be a problem. To solve this problem local authorities could promote reading in public places like parks or youth centres by involving celebrities into this activity. Thus, reading and discussing could regain their popularity.

In conclusion, I believe that despite the obvious disbalance between the active and passive forms of pastime, spending one’s free time and enjoying it is vital for a teenager’s mind and body. It’s an open secret that both work and play should be balanced. (251 words)

40.2 Nowadays, using social networking sites like Instagram or Facebook has gradually become an inseparable part of teenagers’ lives as a staple means of communication. While doing a project on what teenagers in Zetland use social networks for, I found a diagram containing some relevant data that I am going to comment on.

The diagram shows that more than a half of all the teenagers in Zetland, that is 54%, use social media to get entertained. Sharing and following news ranks second in popularity with 21% of the surveyed adolescents. Unexpectedly, only 2% of the respondents use social platforms to promote their hobbies and it is the smallest amount.

The statistics analysis demonstrates that attending fan groups, which makes 12%, is six times as popular as promoting hobbies online. At the same time, uploading photos is almost as popular as being a celebrity follower and is only by 1% less popular.

Although the majority of teenagers use social networks for different purposes, none of them has mentioned using social media for learning and it seems to be a problem. One of the solutions could be promoting virtual learning communities where both teachers and learners would share their ideas and experience.

To sum up, I believe that social platforms will never become unpopular, as they provide a great opportunity to socialize, make friends, follow new trends in fashion, take up a hobby, etc. However, it is also important to be careful not to spend too much time on screens — social media are quite addictive.
