Google:
Search
Combined address and search bar
The combined address and search bar allows you to query search engines or input web addresses to find what you’re looking for on the web. Opera uses the Google search engine by default.
To search the web:
Predictive search suggestions appear as you type. If you want to view results from another search engine, such as Yahoo!, Amazon, or Bing, click the corresponding tab that appears in the lower-right part of the predictive search suggestion box.
If you already know the location of a page, type the web address directly into the combined address and search bar and press Enter to navigate to that page. For example, type www.opera.com and press Enter to navigate to the Opera Software homepage.
Default search engine
Opera’s default search engine is Google, but you may prefer to search using DuckDuckGo, Amazon, or Wikipedia. To change the default search engine:
Custom search engines
In addition to Opera’s default search engines, you can set up the combined address and search bar to return results from other search engines. To do so:
Create a custom search engine
To create a search in a custom search engine, type your engine’s assigned keyword first followed by a space and then enter your query.
You can edit keywords, and manage or remove search engines from the settings page. To do so:
Search with a custom search engine
To use a custom search engine in your search, type the keyword followed by a space before your query. For example, Bing has the keyword “b”. To search with Bing, type “b What is the capital of Idaho.” The results will open in a Bing search results page.
The space between the keyword and your search query is important for selecting a custom search engine.
Change search engines in the highlighted text context menu
With Opera’s search pop-up tool, you can highlight text on a web page and use the selected text as a search query. The search pop-up tool uses your default search engine. However, you may want results from another engine after highlighting text for a search query.
To search using the context menu, highlight some text on a web page and right-click (or CTRL + click) the selection.
In the pop-up window, hover your mouse over Search with, then select the search engine you wish to use.
The results of the search will open in a new tab.
Search pop-up tool
The search pop-up tool is Opera’s utility belt that allows you to search or copy (or share if you’re on a Mac) the text you highlight on a web page. With just one click, your highlighted text opens a new tab and is queried by your default search engine. You can also copy the text to your clipboard to use later on.
This tool can also convert unfamiliar currencies, units, and time zones into a value of your choice when highlighted. If you wish to know how much $44.50 is in euros, how tall 2.05 m is in feet, or what time 7:00 pm MST is in Central Europe, Opera’s search pop-up can tell you. Read more about the converters here.

How to add your favorite search engine to Opera for computers
Everyone has different styles of searching online, including which search engine to use. Some of the most-recognized search engines are Google, Yahoo, Bing, and Wikipedia.
Do you prefer other search engines? Do you have a favorite that you wish you could use more easily? Here’s a tip for personalizing Opera: Add a custom search engine in Opera for computers.
Add your favorite search engine
To add a search engine in Opera for computers, simply visit the search provider’s site, right-click in the search bar and choose Create Search Engine.
You’ll see this message:
Give the engine a name and assign it a keyword. A keyword refers to a letter or short word that you can use to make searches even quicker. It’s like a nickname that reminds Opera which search engine you want to use. Choose something that’s easy to remember. We suggest a single letter. Click OK to add the search engine.
Search the web with your favorite engine
Once you’ve added your preferred search engines, there are two easy ways to use them.
1. Select the icon from the address bar.
When you type the words you want to search in Opera’s address bar, you’ll notice different search engine icons at the bottom of the suggested searches. Click which one you want to use to search for results from that engine.
2. Use the keyword.
An even quicker way to search is using the keyword. If you want to search for shoes on Amazon, for example, you just need to write z, then space, then shoes.
Are there any other search engines you want to share to the other Opera users? Join the conversation by adding a comment below. We’re looking forward to your suggestions!
How to add google search engine to opera
I want to use a search engine that doesn’t track my activity and save my data if that’s OK, Opera.
I know I can add a new search engine to «other search engines» in the settings, but there is no option to then make that new search engine my default or to add it to speed dial.
This issue has been discussed, dare I say, to death. So the thread is duplicative, and should be closed. Here are links to other threads.
And in wanting your activity, at least for the most part, not tracked, you may want to look at the Disconnect Search Extension, which I use.
Now from your Speed Dial, you can easily use any search engine. Just go to the website where there’s a search bar for that engine, and add it to the Speed Dial. For example, https://duckduckgo.com or https://www.startpage.com
Thanks for the links. Such bias manipulation is very disappointing. Seeing as Opera has designed the browser in such a way that the speed dial (which includes the search engine) is rather hard to avoid. If I type in the address bar, open a new tab or use this ‘speed dial’ I am essentially bottlenecked into using a search engine whose terms and privacy policy I do not accept.
Not at all trapped. you can avoid the Speed Dial if you choose. See discussion here about the two Opera extensions— Homepage in New Tab, and the Custom New Page
And you don’t have to use the Speed Dial for your searches. (You can even delete the Google Search Bar from the Speed Dial page if you like by just going into Power User Mode) See discussion at: http://newsblog.wti.com/index.php/2013/11/opera-19-developer-update-how-to-enable-operas-power-user-mode/. Per that discussion though, it’s important to go Alt P, to go to settings, then click outside the search box one time. Right after that follow the instructions in the link above, which directs you to use the Arrow Keys. That one click outside the search box, not mentioned in the discussion is important.
If you look at the threads I first sent you, you can add any Search Engine to Opera by just going to the main webpage of that search engine, and right clicking on the search bar. You then click on adding the search engine to Opera. You’ll get a one letter code (at the most two), and if it’s not an Opera-approved default search engine, all you have to do is type, let’s say for DuckDuckGo, a «d» [space> [search query] in the main address window of Opera. If it’s not a Opera default search, but one you added, all you have to do is type one letter in the main address bar. Now that’s not a lot That way, you don’t have to do a search at all from the Speed Dial.
And of course, with the Disconnect Search extension (the link of which I provided you) you can also use the main Opera address bar (without having to type at all the one letter code), and conduct throughly private searches.
You are not really inhibited with Opera in doing private searches. Opera limited the default search engines, because of a concern that some of them were being hijacked by adware and malware, taking users to unsafe sites.
