How to Become a Witch: Full 8 Step Beginner’s Guide!
Any experienced witch will tell you that being one is a constant learning process. Witchcraft is a craft as the name implies, a skill and a lifestyle at the same time.
How to become a witch? Begin by reading books and articles about witchcraft to learn more about it. Practice by casting spells and creating herbal remedies based on instructions from grimoires. Meditate in order to raise your consciousness. Join a coven and share your experiences with other witches.
Here are 8 essential steps to becoming a powerful, reality-bending witch as quickly as possible:
1. Read books on witchcraft
There are three types of reading materials in witchcraft: theoretical, practical and fiction.
Theory provides valuable knowledge on WHY the methods used in witchcraft work for getting the desired results. Practical reading material includes instructions for casting spells and preparing rituals as well as recipes for concocting magical potions and other herbal remedies.
Usually, non-fiction witchcraft books contain a mixture of both theory and practice. However, some books are exclusively about theory while others, also known as “grimoires”, are often only a collection of spells, rituals, recipes and so forth.
You might be wondering how fiction could help you to become a witch. Fiction is where people put their heart and soul on display. You can learn about what it means to be a witch through relevant characters in stories, and this can motivate you to emulate them better in real life as an aspiring witch.
So be sure to check the book description, table of contents and reviews from other readers to find the right information before buying a book. Especially if you’re ordering more than one book, so you avoid getting ones that are too similar. It’s best to mix it up and read one book from each category at the same time for a more balanced progress and to retain motivation.
2. Learn from other witches
There are many online resources for witches: free articles, Youtube channels and premium courses are the most valuable. By seeing what others in the community are doing you will learn quicker and become familiar with the culture.
Furthermore, this is a good way to get in touch with like minded individuals, share experiences and ask questions. Here are some resources worth checking out:
Youtube channels:
The Green Witch – One of the most popular witch channels on Youtube. Spells, great recipes, lifestyle advice, all presented in a very slick way with top notch production.
Black Witch Coven – Hannah the Witch is one of the most experienced players in the game. She has experience in both white and black magic and is freely sharing information on both.
The Witch of Wonderlust – Another great channel, with a greater focus on book reviews and tarot readings.
Orlee Stewart – Orlee is pretty chill and fun to listen to. Her magic is very Goetia oriented, meaning that she prefers ceremonial and summoning magic in her practice over other forms.
She Walks Between The Worlds – This is a very creative and more of a lifestyle channel. She provides personal insights on her practice, demonstrations on how to cast spells, tours of ritual items such as magic altar, bookshelf, candles, witchery cabinet and much more.
Courses:
The Universal Circle – This is a great course for learning how to create a strong magic circle. A magic circle is an essential requirement for many rituals. There are many intricacies, based on whether you’re casting a protective circle or in order to increase the energy current of your spells and summoned entities etc. All of this and much more is demonstrated in this video course.
The Ars Goetia – This course by Orlee Stewart is a great starting place for Goetic magic. Many witches and magicians (myself included) prefer demonic ceremonial magic to all other forms. Demons can be incredibly powerful allies and Ars Goetia provides 72 demons renowned for their powers to influence reality on our behest. To put it simply, this course will make you want to summon a demon first chance you get.
3. Join a coven
The old saying that you are the average of five people you spend most of your time with is very true. If you want to become a witch introduce a few witches into your social circle.
If there’s a coven available in your local area it might be worth joining or at least checking out to see what the members are like. Covens are essentially groups of witches that spend time together, share insights and information, perform group rituals etc.
The Witches Sabbat
If you don’t have access to a coven, an alternative is to create your own or simply become friends with people who are interested in witchcraft. Online forums are a good place to meet people, and perhaps there you will stumble upon your destined mentor.
You might also wish to check out social media accounts, for example by typing #witchesofinstagram on Instagram, joining relevant FB groups etc.
4. Choose your path
There are many paths, belief systems and skills that you can focus on as a witch. Some witches are very much into herbs, others prefer ceremonial magic, wiccan rituals, astral travel and so forth.
Most witches you are likely to encounter are pagans or Wiccan, while others believe in some form of Satanism. There are also those who are atheists or agnostic, and I’ve even met a few witches that are Christian!
Witchcraft is a very unique and individualistic process so don’t feel bogged down by definitions or labels. However, you may wish to hone down on a specific belief system or craft your very own unique system by combining elements from other systems.
As a beginner, it’s best to learn a bit of everything and see what you like best and then go from there.
5. Embrace the lifestyle
Witchcraft requires regular practice. Because it’s not only a skill but also a lifestyle, it’s very helpful to become engrossed in the cultural aspect as well. This can include your clothing style, home decorations, choice of people you associate with and things you decide to focus on.
All of this can be considered as practice. On top of that, there is the aspect of practicing magic itself, creating potions, taking care of your herbal garden if you have one, meditating and much more.
The more you practice, the easier it becomes to magically manifest what you desire in reality, whether it’s healing, manipulation of events or simply feeling more empowered in day-to-day life.
6. Write a magic diary
This is a very simple and effective practice that will allow you to track your progress. A magic diary is a notebook in which you write down your magic related goals and experiences, spells, rituals and other practices.
For example, if you a cast a spell you can write down the effects. Or you can write down your experiences in astral travel and lucid dreaming, recipes of your potions and herbs etc. Consider this as a sort of autobiography sketch that will be a wonderful way to look back on your journey in witchcraft.
7. Keep it on the hush
Proclaiming yourself as a witch to people who are not supportive of witchcraft isn’t exactly the best idea. Your family and friends might be scared or prejudiced of your new lifestyle choice. They might have a negative impression of witches built on horror stories and religious beliefs.
Instead of alienating the people that are close to you, it’s best to go slowly by keeping your practice secret or by introducing them to certain aspects gradually, without proclaiming yourself as a witch.
For example, you could share your fascination with magic crystals and herbs or even magic spells. They might find that intriguing or consider you a bit eccentric, without passing moral judgment like they would if you presented the same ideas with the controversial label of witchcraft.
8. Gather your ritual items
Ritual items include various materials that are used to perform rituals, spells and create different types of atmosphere depending on your present needs.
Some often used items are: candles, incense, magic crystals, crystal ball, roots and herbs, cauldrons, scrying mirror, wand, staff, ritual dagger, ceremonial ritual robes, grimoires, tarot cards, potion ingredients etc.
Of course, you don’t have to get all of these items. It also depends on the type of witchcraft that you practice and the requirements of the spells and rituals that you conduct. But most will come in handy sooner or later so it’s good to stock up.
It’s also the case that having more items opens up the opportunity to conduct more complex spells and rituals which you would otherwise have to replace with simpler and less effective alternatives.
Final Word: How to Become a Witch
Practicing witchcraft is not for the faint hearted. You will discover the dark spiritual underbelly of reality and hopefully use it to your advantage instead of being destroyed by it.
As a beginner witch it’s important to take gradual steps and enjoy the process of discovering yourself and the environment from a new, magical perspective.
Don’t force yourself into any practice, because enjoying this transformative process is the most important thing. After all, being a witch is a 24-7 endeavor so you don’t want to feel overwhelmed.
You will shift from magic robes into regular clothes and behaviors based on social requirements, but once you tap into the witchy mindset of personal power and higher intuitiveness it will never leave you.

How to Become a Witch: A Beginner’s Guide
Everything you need to know about witchcraft, covens, and the risks.
Welcome to W’s Witch Week, a celebration of all things witchy. In the days leading up to Halloween, we’ll be boiling up a wicked brew of all things occult, from pop culture’s favorite new witches to the real women practicing Wicca today.
Halloween is right around the corner, but that’s not the only reason witches seem to be everywhere as of late. Increasingly, they’ve been popping up all over the place, from pop culture—see: Luca Guadagnino’s remake of the horror film Suspiria, Netflix’s remake of Sabrina the Teenage Witch—to the runways of Fashion Week (Celine and Burberry were just two of the seemingly dozens of brands that served up witchy vibes this past season alone). There are, of course, deeper things at play: Witchcraft and covens have also proven to be a source of solace and solidarity for some in the #MeToo era, following an increasing association between witches and feminism.
Alas, one doesn’t simply become a witch by wearing Burberry and accessorizing with a black cat, or buying some crystals and altering their Instagram aesthetics. (Just ask one of the estimated one million Americans who currently practice some form of paganism.) Get acquainted with some of the preliminary steps for joining their ranks, here.
Know the risks.
Witchcraft isn’t just fun and games; perks like hexes and love spells can come with a price. The infamous Salem witch trials may seem far in the past, but the persecution of witches (or those suspected of witchcraft) continues today. Despite the mainstream’s growing fascination, the past few years have also seen, for example, a whopping 900 percent rise in (at times lethal) child-abuse cases linked to suspicion of witchcraft and demonic possession in the U.K. There are, of course, methods of protection, like carrying an evil eye. The easiest one, however, is to simply not go around shouting about your newfound identity.
Choose your path.
There’s no shortage of types of witchcraft, meaning there’s also no shortage of choices for an aspiring witch. Rather than get overwhelmed, get your bearings by having at least a basic understanding of the terms below.
Paganism: An umbrella term for religions other than the Abrahamic faiths of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam that typically places emphasis on the earth and nature. Its modern-day practitioners are known as neo-pagans.
Wicca: A religion that’s perhaps the popularized form neo-paganism, thanks in large part to the so-called Father of Wicca, Gerald Gardner, who cultivated his specific ideology, now known as Gardnerian Wicca, in the mid-1900s. Whereas witches are typically thought of as women, many Wiccans are men and worship both a god and a goddess. What was initially thought of as an anti-monotheistic gesture, though, has more recently been criticized for espousing heterosexuality and the idea of a gender binary, which was, in part, what led to the emergence of Dianic Wicca, in the 1970s, for those who chose to only worship the goddess and to do so only in the presence of women—a policy that’s since proven to be problematic, as many of its covens prohibit transgender women.
Ceremonial: The by-the-book practice of placing the highest value in—not to mention expertly executing—ceremonies and rituals.
Brujería: An umbrella term for African, Caribbean, and indigenous Latin American witchcraft, dating back centuries, if not thousands of years. Increasingly, though, the word bruja, Spanish for witch, has been reclaimed by Latinx women interested in their heritage—and made contemporary by, say, using the gender-neutral term brujx.
Solitary: This group is made up of those who choose not to find a coven, but instead operate on their own with the type (or mix) of witchcraft that they choose.
Eclecticism: A more social route for those who choose not to stick to a particular category but instead mix traditions as they please.Learn the terminology.
You can get a more comprehensive guide to definitions via Shelley Rabinovitch and James Lewis’s The Encyclopedia of Modern Witchcraft and Neo-Paganism, a good portion of which is available on Google Books. Before that deep dive, though, any beginner should have at least cursory knowledge of the terms listed below.
Initiation: The rites that put a budding witch on the path to making things official, by joining a coven after studying its practice, traditionally for a year and a day. The initiations that follow eventually allow the initiate the opportunity to become a high priest or high priestess; those with enough knowledge, experience, and dedication can become the leader of a Wiccan coven.
Coven: A gathering or community of initiated witches, usually led by a high priest and/or high priestess. If a coven is Wiccan, their meetings often involve sabbats, which are celebrations of the annual cycle of seasonal festivals known as the Wheel of the Year. (Non-sabbat meetings, such as the observation of a full moon, are known as esbats.)
Salem in a scene from season three of *Sabrina the Teenage Witch*, with the titular character played by Melissa Joan Hart—and dealing with the repercussions of the insults Salem let loose during an online game of chess.
Familiar: An animal-shaped spirit that serves as a witch’s spy, assistant, companion, and protector—the classic example of which is Sabrina’s black cat, Salem.
Altar: A surface that a Wiccan uses solely for activities such as casting spells, chanting, and worshipping the god and goddess. Typically, the altar is covered in a symbol-adorned cloth, which protects it from ash, liquids, and candle wax, as well as religious and ritual items like incense, wands, chalices of water, and cauldrons.
Pentacle: A magical tool such as an amulet or talisman that often appears on an altar, and is also often confused with a pentagram—a symbol popular in Wicca and, confusingly enough, the Church of Satan, which has pretty successfully taken ownership of its inverted version. (Inverted pentacles aren’t necessarily satanic, though Wiccans have recently largely strayed from using them to avoid that association.)
A Wiccan pentacle, made up of a pentagram (a symbol used for protection and directing magic), versus the original goat pentagram, dating back to 1897, which later served as inspiration for the Sigil of Baphomet, aka the Church of Satan’s official insignia.
Black Magic: A form of magic used with dark, malevolent, and harmful intentions, commonly associated with satanism. Spells have been used for a variety of purposes ever since the days of the Magi of Zoroastrianism and Ancient Egypt, but those that are specifically used for negative and/or harmful purposes are known as hexes and curses.
Séance: A ceremony used to contact spirits, including the dead, usually with the help of a medium.
Grimoire: The umbrella term for a magic text, ranging from diaries to textbooks.
Book of Shadows: A Wiccan’s personal grimoire, used to store information they need, such as thoughts, recipes, and instructions for spells, rituals, and hexes.
Study up.
Even if you think you’re sure you want to proceed, it’s best to find out what exactly you’re signing up for. Before paging through your spell books, it’s wise to do your research—particularly since the modern-day idea of witchcraft has been pieced together by a mix of legends and existing translated historical documents, leading each of the pros to have a slightly different take on the subject. Going back to the first step of knowing the risks, The Penguin Book of Witches, written by Katherine Howe, a descendant of some of Salem’s accused witches, is a helpful guide to witch-related history (and tragedy), dating back to the 1600s. (For a more firsthand—and definitely lighter—read, Stewart Farrar’s What Witches Do recounts his experience of being a witch and part of a coven led by Alex and Maxine Sanders, who cofounded Alexandrian Wicca in the 1960s.)
Still interested? If so, start with the basics (and praise your deity of choice you made this decision after the invention of Google). For those interested in Wicca, Lisa Chamberlain has become a go-to source; her book Wicca for Beginners is basically Wicca 101, and there are plenty more books where that came from, both by Chamberlain and also on her recommended reading list. If you’re interested in other forms of witchcraft and/or ready for a deeper dive, pick up Drawing Down the Moon: Witches, Druids, Goddess-Worshippers, and Other Pagans in America Today, by the late journalist and Wiccan priestess Margot Adler. The first sociology of contemporary paganism in the U.S., it still holds up since its first publication, in 1979, thanks in parts to its three more recently revised editions.
Stock up.
Depending on what type of witchcraft you decide to pursue, you’ll likely need at least a few supplies from an occult store, like candles, oils, roots, and herbs for rituals; spell books; tarot cards; potion ingredients; cauldrons; and, for those drawn to psychism, a crystal ball. (Some supplies won’t need to be purchased—the so-called Feces Spell, for example, is definitely chief in that category.)
Practice, practice, practice.
Some places to start are learning how to do a candle dressing, trying out some basic rituals, and familiarizing yourself with the different uses of crystals and candles—all of which you can keep a record of in your Book of Shadows.
How To Become A Witch – 12 Illusive Tips From An Actual Witch

How To Begin Your Journey Into Witchcraft – A Magickal Guide For Beginners
‘Merry Meet’ – That’s a traditional greeting amongst witches – we’re so glad you found us! As some of you may already know Wicca Now is a place where Amaria and I write all about witchcraft, magick and Wicca. Lately, we’ve been writing about moon magick, water magick and kitchen witchery and today I thought we’d cover another popular topic, namely how to become a witch.
The first thing that any baby witch or person curious about witchcraft needs to know is that pretty much everything you’ve seen television or in the movies about witches is wrong. The witches you see in the movies are pure fantasy, they are the make-believe creations of a clever scriptwriters mind and bear little resemblance to real-life witches. Witches (as far as I know) are not able to fly on broomsticks, turn princes into frogs or dust into diamonds. You might be disappointed to read this but it is the truth and from experience, the truth is always the best place to start.
Both Amaria and I define ourselves as witches so you can be sure that this information is coming straight from a reputable source, however, the world of modern witchcraft is so diverse there may be those who disagree with what we have to say and others still who would tell you a completely different story about witches and witchcraft and swear upon its truth. This is perfectly fine and the choice of whom to believe or not is yours. To walk the way of witchcraft requires one to be an explorer and as with all adventures, not knowing the final destination, and instead, finding joy in the journey itself is what makes it interesting.
As a beginner witch, you can be sure of one thing: there is no One True Way to be a witch. Witchcraft is no place for dogmatics and if you happen upon a witch who tries to enforce his or her rules upon you my advice would be to run. What witchcraft IS is a place of Freedom and Diversity. It is a place where spirituality and the Craft (the art and science of magick) meet. It is a place where you can learn about yourself, express your creativity and connect with your higher self. The world of witchcraft is colourful, diverse, magickal and available to all those who seek it.
Why Do You Want To Become A Witch?
There are so many reasons you might feel drawn to witchcraft. Maybe you’ve always felt drawn to mystical and magickal stories, felt a connection to the gods and goddesses you learned about during history lessons or felt intuitively connected to nature and the rhythm of her cycles (the seasons, the tides, the phases of the moon). Perhaps you’ve experienced synchronicities in your life, things that made no logical sense but seemed to happen for a reason.
You might have family or historical connections to witchcraft or to magickal ways of being. You may feel drawn to Pagan or Wiccan rituals and beliefs. You might like to explore your power as a female, as a male or in whatever form you choose. You might have a curiosity about the deeper mysteries of the universe and about the laws of attraction, manifestation and healing. You might feel misplaced within your current perception of reality and be seeking to find new ways of understanding the world around you.
Whatever your reason for choosing to express interest in witchcraft the choice is yours to make and you are also free to change your mind at any time.
The Wrong Reasons For Deciding To Become A Witch
For as many wonderful reasons there are to choose witchcraft there are also, in my opinion, just as many wrong reasons for choosing the Craft.
Witchcraft is not a way to make yourself more ‘special’ (you are already special and unique), it is not a tool for impressing people or for making yourself feel better than others. It is not a tool for acquiring power or influence (although some use it as such in the form of black magic) nor is it an easy way to get what you want. Witchcraft will not allow you to simply manifest your desires with the shake of a wand. Become aware of your motivations before choosing the path. Understand your own desires and know what it is that you seek.
Please also keep in mind that there are many dishonest people, including those who call themselves witches, who might attempt to scam you. Some people use spirituality and witchcraft as part of a scam to get your money, acquire power over you or influence you into doing things you might not feel inclined to do. Keep your wits about you and trust your intuition when it comes to these matters. Anyone can start a coven or call themselves a witch. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they have your best interest at heart.
The Rewards Of Witchcraft – Merry Be
Being a witch has so many awesome benefits and can be incredibly rewarding! Because witchcraft is so diverse and open to personal interpretation the range of benefits to be expected can be wide-ranging depending on where you choose to set your focus.
I can say from personal experience that being a witch has helped me to feel more connected and loving towards myself as well as helping me to feel more connected to the earth, the moon and the stars. Being a witch has also taught me so many new skills like divination and herbology as well as allowing me to get in touch with my own psychic abilities.
Some of the benefits of being a witch might include feeling more connected to mother earth as well as to nature in general. You might also feel a deeper connection to your ancestors and those that went before. Because witchcraft is a path of constant learning, witches are often some of the most well-read people you’ll meet.
Witches are also often skilled in the healing arts and may be able to communicate with the animal realm. Some of the other skills you can expect to develop as a witch include divination, herbology and kitchen witchery, knowledge of the moon and stars as well as heightened psychic abilities. Because witches learn to gain control of their own energy and thoughts, you’ll often find that they have very grounded and peaceful energy.
What Is Witchcraft? – A Witches Tale
If you’ve made it this far it seems fair to say that you have a real curiosity about witchcraft but you probably have a lot of unanswered questions am I right? The first question I often get asked by beginner witches is ‘what is witchcraft actually’? As you may have noticed already, witchcraft is a multifaceted domain open to interpretation and wildly diverse. Because of this, it’s hard to put a clearly defined label on it but I’ll try and give you some examples of witchcraft in action so that you can create your own idea of what witchcraft might be.
Seasons, Moon Cycles And The Wheel Of The Year
Many witches, especially those following the Wiccan or Pagan path celebrate eight sabbats or holy days throughout the year. These sabbats comprise a yearly calendar called ‘The Wheel of the Year’. Again, as with all things concerning witchcraft, it’s very much up to you if you would like to celebrate these holy days or not.
The sabbats are as follows:
The sabbats are a way of reflecting the changing seasons and the energies that accompany these changes. If you’d like to learn more about the Sabbats why not check out our blog post on the Wheel of the Year.
Witches also often feel intuitively drawn to the moon and may follow the eight phases of the moon closely. Each phase of the moon brings different energy with it and understand each phase and its corresponding energy forms an essential part of moon magick.
Some witches (including myself) like to perform special rituals on the night of the full moon as this is considered to be the time when the power of the moon has reached its peak power. As well as working with the eight phases of the moon, many witches like to take their moon magick a step further by incorporating the zodiac signs.
The energies one can expect as the moon moves through the zodiac are as follows:
Moon in Aries
(the Ram, a fire sign ruled by Mars): Spontaneity, energy, enthusiasm, action, openness, independence, passion.
Moon in Taurus
(the Bull, an earth sign ruled by (the Bull, an earth sign ruled by Venus): Security, conservatism, nature and strength, health, stability, endurance, Calmness, strength, health, stability, endurance, also stubbornness, slowness.

Moon in Pisces
(the Fish, a water sign ruled by Jupiter and Neptune): Sensitivity, empathy, connection, kindness, understanding, imagination, solitude; also daydreaming, impracticality, emotional parasitism, over- sensitivity.
Beyond the cycles of the moon, the seasons and the year, witches may also like to work with the cycles of day and night, life and death, inner and outer worlds or the astrological cycles of the planets.
The Pentagram – A Witches Power House
The pentagram, a five-pointed star, is considered one of the most powerful symbols of witchcraft. Often misrepresented as an ominous symbol aligned with dark energies, the pentagram actually symbolises The Great All, the universe, consciousness, the five elements, you name it. It’s been used as a symbol of protection since ancient times and standing upright, it represents the spirit ruling over the world of materiality.
Although some people believe that the pentagram standing upsidedown is a satanic symbol, most witches simply believe that in its upside-down iteration the pentagram represents the horned god or in other words, the dark side of the light, the yin of the yang, the night followed by the day.
As a beginner witch, you may choose to work with the pentagram if you like or you can put it into your ‘to do later’ pile and approach it again once your knowledge and understanding of witchcraft have increased.
Supplies – A Witches Tools Of The Trade
A Book of Shadows
A Book of Shadows should be something that every witch keeps. A Book of Shadows, sometimes also called a BOS, is a blank book in which a witch records all of his or her spell and rituals as well as any notes, thoughts, dreams, belief system, or whatever else he or she considers relevant to his or her practice of the Craft.
Some witches like to keep a virtual book of shadows rather than writing into a physical book. The choice is yours, however, make sure that regardless of what style of Book of Shadows you use, you are methodical about recording your work in it. A Book of Shadows might live on your witchy altar if you have one or in a special draw or cupboard.
Imagination
To be a witch is to develop a strong imagination. Without first imagining it, nothing can be brought into being. All began as a thought, an image an inspiration within the mind. A good question to ask yourself as a beginner witch is ‘what do I want’ Once you have a clear answer begin the work of imagining it as vividly as possible.
Later you can begin to work with spells, rituals and visualisations to further help bring your imagination to life. Write all of your imaginations, your dreams and your wishes into your Book of Shadows. Record any exercises or meditation practices you do. Keep note of any spellwork you have started in regards to your imagined desires. Note the effectiveness of your spells. Revise your spells if they are found to be ineffective and make new notes. Rinse and repeat.
Athame
An athame is a double-edged witches knife. This knife is used for magickal purposes only and should never be used to cut anything physically. The athame is either kept on your witchy altar or in a special place where it won’t be disturbed.
A Wand
A wand is a tool associated with the will. You might like to incorporate a wand into your witches toolkit but it is certainly not required. Personally I find wands to be a little cliche and my magick works perfectly fine without the use of a wand.
A Chalice
A chalice represents the element of water and some witches like to use a chalice within their spell or ritual work. A chalice can be filled with water, you might like to use moon water or any other liquid of your choice. Many witches keep their chalice on the west-facing side of their altar. Personally I don’t have a single chalice but rather work with a set of beautiful Japanese ceramics which I cleanse and bless before any magickal work.
A Magickal Name
Some witches like to choose a special magickal name for themselves. You might like to keep this name for yourself, using it privately in your spellwork or you might like to share it with members of a Coven, between like-minded friends or use it out in the world at large. Again, the choice is yours and if you decide to stick with your birth name, of course, that’s also perfectly fine.
Divination Tools
Many witches like to have a set of divination tools on hand. This might include a deck of Tarot cards, a pendulum, a scrying bowl or runes
Mason Jars
There’s a running joke within the witch community that you can always spot a closeted witch by the number of mason jars in her kitchen. Mason jars are a super practical tool for witchcraft. You can use them for spell work like this protection jar, this honey jar love spell or for storing different type of magickal waters. You can also use jars for storing special herbs and spices, crystals, magickal trinkets and other useful bits and pieces.
For a more detailed explanation of the witches toolbox I suggest Amaria’s post on the top her top 13 witch supplies.
A Magical Diet – What Do Witches Eat?
Because witches generally try to live in harmony with the natural world and try to walk gently on the earth, the same can often be said about their diet. Many witches prefer a plant-based diet, often comprised of seasonal fruits and vegetables, organic where possible. To have a witches garden and gown their own produce, fruits and herbs is the dream of many witches.
Witchy kitchens often feature a broad array of potted herbs on the windowsills, and a witch can often be found pursuing the stands at his or her local produce market. Again, as with all things witchy, there are no rules about diet. Decide what works for you and go with that. Test it out, refine, re-test.
A Witchy Way Of Life – Rituals And Routines
Working with rituals and routines is part of the witchy way of life. May witches start their day with a practice of mediation and visualisation, others like to walk outdoors and commune with nature. Some witches like to perform daily cleansing rituals in the shower or they enjoy the soothing comfort of a bath ritual.
For many witches, words are vehicles of power and working with affirmations and incantations form a part of their daily practice. Meditation, communing with the Gods and Goddesses or connecting with the animal world are also rituals which many witches find to be invaluable. You may also like to begin journaling, gardening or take up yoga. Some witches love to dance, others prefer to sit still in contemplation.
Designing your rituals and routines is part of your witchy practice and can be as individual as you like. Again, make sure to keep a note of what you are doing, what works and what doesn’t, how you feel and what your energy is like in your Book of Shadows.
Light Or Dark Witchcraft – The Rules Of the Craft
Whilst the Wiccan way of witchcraft is governed by the rule ‘An ye harm none, do as ye will’, witchcraft itself has no such code of ethics.
However, witchcraft does have some general rules which many witches instinctively adhere to. These include:
Can I Get A Spell With That? Magick and Spellwork Explained
Is magick real? If I had a dollar for every time someone has asked me this question… To answer the question, YES, magick is totally real but it’s quite different from the magic you might know from series or movies like Sabrina the teenage witch, and harry potter. To understand what magick is we first need to define it. Magick in its essence is really about using the conscious and subconscious mind to transform oneself and the environment. Knowing your true self, your goals, and applying energy to these goals is the basis of all modern witchcraft.
Magick can be divided into two categories: practical magick and theurgy. Practical magick covers all areas related to health, wealth, travel, work and such. Need a spell to protect your home? Practical magic (along with a deadbolt) will be your go-to. Theurgy, on the other hand, is a higher form of magick related to spiritual development and the higher dimensions.
As a beginner witch, I suggest you first try your hand at the most basic of practical magick. Perfect the simplest spells first before moving on to anything more advanced. Magick takes real patience, practice, and self-reflection. Anyone thinking it’s as easy as waving a wand and shouting ‘abracadabra’ is seriously barking up the wrong tree.
As a beginner witch, you might like to start your magickal practice with some of the beginners spells Amaria and I have added to the site. For example, this easy love spell, or this full moon spell to attract abundance.
Remember to record all of your spellwork and the results in your Book of Shadows.
There are also a number of different types of witches and spellwork.
Some of these include:
For a more detailed look at the different types of witches check out Amarias post on the different types of witches.
What Are Spells And How Do I Make One?
Spells are the tools through which witches manifest their magick out into the world. To most witches, a spell is any type of magickal operation and a spell may or may not involve tools and or words. Spells can be as complicated or as simple as needed and many witches prefer to make their own spells according to their own specific needs. Spells always involve imagination, intention and action

How to Become a Witch:
So many people have asked me this question. How to be a witch? What makes a witch? Maybe you have come here with some false assumptions on witchcraft. Maybe to you it is an array of tricks, a way to be dark and moody, a way to make your parents mad, or a way to get a boy to kiss you. Hopefully you are interested in the craft, and whether you consider yourself pagan, wiccan or a solitary witch who practices witchcraft and hopefully this will give you some accurate and understandable information on it all. Witchcraft is not evil and really should be taken seriously. This is a religion just like any other it takes some research, knowledge and study. It should be taken seriously and not as a preteen joke.
Before embarking on your pagan journey it is important to be well versed in the craft. Not an expert, but at least have a general understanding of the basics of Wicca, and a healthy respect for your mind, body, soul, the universe, and the power you posses in it.
It is important to be mentally, physically and emotionally healthy and as all of these things have an important role to play in your witchcraft success.
You can teach yourself how to be a witch (solitary witch) or learn with a coven or a group of people. Any way is fine. A lot of us are not luck enough to have people in our lives showing us the craft of old, so we do the best we can and learn the best we can by finding pagan communities online and off.
?The best way to teach yourself how to be a witch is to read as much information you can. Use the search on the website to find just about anything you can imagine on the subject of witchcraft.
?Practice the craft. Information is wonderful but actually doing magick and spell work is the best way to become a witch. You need to write spells, study nature, learn about the esbats, and sabbats but you can’t be a witch without doing magick.
?Learn and grow in the craft. This journey is a wonderful experience that really can enlighten you and make you a better, stronger person than who you are now. Have fun and enjoy the wonderful things the earth has to offer you.

Becoming a Witch?
Sometimes my spells work and sometimes they don’t work at all.
I am really shocked at how often this seems to pop up in conversation (follow me on twitter @BallisticJW), this question has been answered millions of times but people still ask me about this almost daily. You would never go to your first piano lesson or ballet lesson and expect it all to be done perfectly and achieve perfect results instantly. You would expect to practice and learn the techniques to make your performance better. Magick is no different in this sense. You will have a spell turn out perfectly and you will have a spell that does not turn out perfectly. You should always keep a spell journal so you might be able to troubleshoot your witchcraft spells. Practice makes perfect in all things including your journey to know how to be a witch.
I think negative spirits are trying to contact me or become my spirit guide.
Just like in the physical world, you are never under any obligation to converse or entertain spirits who give you negative vibes, feelings or emotions. The universe will not force a negative guide on you. You don’t have a obligation or duty to communicate with negative spirits. Some people assume they are mediums, or it is their job to help this negative spirit, absolutely untrue. You don’t have to be in service to anyone. You are not put on this earth to be torture by some evil entity or negative force. There is no reason for you to put up with negative energies whether from a physical person or a spiritual energy. If you are having a problem with negative spirits then consider this “Like attract Like” the types of people you attract is similar to the types of spirits you will attract. They are attracted to you for a reason, bringing more positivity, happiness, peace, and joy will help you attract friends and spirits of the like. Learning how to be a witch requires such a strong mind, it will bring you much joy if you are content within yourself. If you are attracting negative energies then work on your own spiritual hygiene, aura cleansings and purification will help.
(If you have some more intense negative energies and you feel they are attacking you mentally and emotionally then seeking someone out to speak with, like a counselor, therapists or psychiatrist may be something you need to look into. I don’t deny that we communicate with spirits on a daily basis, but if it is harming you or making you mentally unstable then help may be needed.)
What kind of Witch should I be?
There are many different types of Wiccans, Pagans, Witches, etc. They follow different rules depending on the denomination. There exists Gardenarians, Celtics, Sumerians, Egyptians, and whole lot of others. I think it is important to be called on to the path you walk. Make sure you have the strength to learn, seek and see the truth. I am not one to pass judgment on any of the denominations. I just would want you to know and have the strength to retain yourself on your path in learning how to be a witch. There are always people out there who will try to control you, or get money from you, or even ask you for sexual favors, these are not the people you want to associate yourself with and these people aren’t accurate representatives of the craft. I always encourage you to use your mind, common sense will usually steer you in the right direction. Be on the lookout for spiritual nonsense. Get well grounded in the basics of the craft, your own magickal abilities and knowledge and the right coven, group or guides will come your way. This is how you will be a witch for real 🙂

Can Anyone Become A Witch? (Pagan And Witch FAQ)
Please note that posts on this site may contain affiliate links
There are many myths about witches out there. One of the most prevalent myths is that witches must be born a witch, or have some innate power. I’m here to tell you that isn’t true.
The simple fact is that anyone can become a witch.
Witchcraft is a craft, a skill that is learned over time through practice and study. It’s like woodworking or painting. No one is born knowing how to build a house, but with practice and training anyone can do it.
Of course, not everyone finds it easy to practice witchcraft, just like not everyone wants to be a carpenter. Some people have no interest, some find it boring, and some people just don’t want to or can’t believe in magic. Those people will have a hard time practicing witchcraft.
That’s the personality element. Not everyone has the personality to be a witch. Someone that is a militant atheist that thinks any spiritual beliefs are stupid can never be a witch until they soften their views.
Being spiritual is an essential part of being a witch. I don’t mean that you need to believe in a deity or be religious, but if you don’t believe in some kind of energy or spark within us, how can you use that energy to change the world? You need to be able to believe in some kind of energy within all people and in the universe that can be changed by your magic.
Being too skeptical will stop your magic from working, no matter how good the spell you perform is. So if you can’t believe in magic, you’re better off not trying to become a witch.
Similarly, if you are a nervous person that overthinks the consequences of their every action, you may be better off not trying to practice witchcraft. Negative thinking can cause you to curse yourself, leading to disastrous results. Better safe than sorry!
But can anyone become a witch? The answer is yes. We are all born with a divine spark or energy within us, and that energy can be manipulated or be used to change the energies around us. Witchcraft is about tapping into that energy to control ourselves and our fates.
During the full moon, we call upon Hekate to assist us in clearing our past, releasing our fears, and opening ourselves to new possibilities. We ask her to help us gain clarity in our lives, to help us transform our inner worlds, and to allow us to move forward with courage and confidence.
It is said that Hekate helps us to overcome obstacles and challenges that stand in our way, and to achieve our goals. In addition to being a benevolent Goddess, she is also a fierce warrior. When we summon her, we invite her to help us take charge of our lives, to lead us into battle, and to fight for justice.
