How to change the default language in Chrome

To change the language, first open the browser. Before you change the Chrome language, it’s a good idea to save any content you might need later. Otherwise, the content will be lost because the browser will restart after the language update. Once you’ve saved important files and content, simply follow our guide.

Step 1: Open Chrome settings

Open the browser menu by right-clicking on the three-point icon. Next, select the menu item “Settings.” Alternatively, you can access the Chrome settings by entering “chrome://settings/” in the address bar.

Scroll down to the settings and click on the “Advanced” button to open additional options.

In the newly opened section, scroll down to the “Languages” section. You can configure the Chrome language using the first option. Simply click on “Language.”

Select the “Language” to adjust the settings for the language displayed by the Chrome browser.

The next step depends on whether your preferred language is already shown or not:

If your preferred language is already listed, click on the three points in the corresponding row.

If the desired language is already shown, open the respective menu by clicking on the three-point icon.

Next, choose “Display Google Chrome in this language.”

Place a checkmark in the box “Display Google Chrome in this language” to select the menu language.

If the desired language is not shown in the list, select “Add languages”:

Select “Add languages” if your preferred language option is not shown in the “Languages” list.

You’ll have two options in the selection menu that follows:

Then, click on “Add” to save the settings:

Find your preferred language using the search function or by scrolling to add it to the list of your display languages.

The desired language will now be shown in the list. To activate it, follow the step above for “The preferred language is listed.”

Step 4: Restart Chrome

In order for Chrome to now display this newly selected language, click on “Restart.” The browser will close automatically. When it reopens, the browser interface will appear in the new language.

By clicking on “Restart”, the altered settings will be applied.

Then you need to click the Relaunch button for the changes to go into effect.

That’s all there is to it. When your browser gets back from the relaunch, it will display in the language you selected. Note that you can enable spell checking in that language, too.

Make sure the Spell Check button is enabled, and then select the language you want to use for it. Also, note that each time you change the language, you’ll need to relaunch the browser for the setting to go into effect.

Many websites are offered in more than one language. While the default setting in Google Chrome is USA English, you change Chrome’s language to almost anything you’d like.

Instructions in this article apply to the desktop version of Chrome for all operating systems and the Chrome mobile app for iOS and Android.

How to Change Chrome’s Languages

In Google Chrome, you’re given the ability to specify languages in order of preference. Before a web page is rendered, Chrome will check to see if it supports your preferred languages in the order listed. If the page is available in one of these languages, it will be displayed in your preferred script.

To change your language preferences in Chrome:

Before you begin, you may want to update Google Chrome to make sure you’re using the most recent version of the browser.

Select the three dots in the top-right corner of Chrome and choose Settings from the drop-down menu.

You can also get to Chrome’s settings by entering chrome://settings/ in the URL bar.

Select the three lines next to Settings and choose Advanced.

Find the Languages section, and then select Language to pull down a new menu.

You should see at least one language or possibly more listed in preference order. One will be chosen as the default language with a message that says This Language is used to display the Google Chrome UI. You may also see another option with a message that says This language is used to translate webpages.

To choose another language, select Add languages.

Search or scroll through the list and check the boxes beside the languages you want, then select Add.

With the new languages now at the bottom of the list, select the three dots next to a language to adjust its position on the list.

You also have the option to delete the language, display Google Chrome in that language, or have Chrome automatically offer to translate pages to that language.

Exit the Chrome settings. Language preferences are saved automatically as you make changes to them.

When you visit a page written in a language that’s not on your list, Chrome will offer to translate it. If you want to print in another language from Chrome, you must first translate the page.

How to Change Languages in the Chrome App

The mobile Chrome app can translate pages too, but it doesn’t offer as much control over the language selection as you have with the desktop program. To change the default language and translate text to a different language in the Chrome app:

Open the Chrome app and tap More.

Tap Settings.

1. Go to myaccount.google.com and sign in if you aren’t already.

2. Click «Data & personalization.»

3. Under General preferences for the web, select «Language.»

4. Click the pencil icon to edit your default language from English.

5. Type in the language you want to set or scroll until you find it, then click Select.

6. If you want to add another language and receive a Google translate prompt on web pages, click «Add another language» and repeat the process.

7. To have Google automatically add languages you frequently use in Google services, toggle the relevant slider and wait for it to turn blue.

How to change language in Google on mobile

You can change the language of your Google account services on your Android or iPhone following mostly the same steps as you would on the desktop. Smartphone users just need to take a few extra steps in the beginning.

To change language for Google services and web page translation on Android, you’ll first need to open your Settings app and select Google from the list of options. On your account profile, tap «Manage your Google Account» under your email and profile icon. Finally, choose the «Data & personalization» option from the top bar.

On an iPhone, it’s much easier to get to your account’s language settings. Just open the Gmail app, tap your profile picture or initials in the top right corner, and select «Google Account.» From here you should be able to access your data and personalization settings.

9. Restart Chrome for the changes to take effect.

Troubleshooting language changes in Google

With so many ways to change your Google language across devices, services, and products, you’re bound to run into issues. Here’s a few common ones and how to fix them.

If your language update didn’t work: Sometimes it will appear that a language update hasn’t occurred. You can try restarting your Chrome browser, your Google app, or logging back into your account to see if that updates the changes. If not, try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies, then set the language again.

If your language isn’t listed: While Google has a number of languages available for users, it doesn’t encompass everything that exists. If the primary language you want isn’t available, Google will prompt you to choose an alternate language. You can add a secondary language using just about every language update method, and it will be visible beneath your primary language.
