Resource Hacker or any other resource editor (Optional): if you want to use a custom icon for you final executable you should use a resource editor app and replace the icon with your desired one. here is Resource Hacker app download link from it’s developer website.

Step1:

Create a exec.bat file in the same folder of your msi file and copy your msiexec /i «path of msi file» /qn in it. I used Installer.msi for my sample so here is my file:

Compress msi and bat files to a 7z archive.(you can download and install 7zip from here) in the sample I compressed my Installer.msi and exec.bat to a installer.7z archive.

Step3:

Download and extract 7zSD (from 7zSfx link) and put the file in the same folder of archive, here is direct link to it.

Step4 (Optional):

We can change icon of the installer, to do this we should replace icon of 7zsd.sfx file, in Resource hacker we should open 7zsd.sfx and get to IconGroup > 101 > 1049 and replace the icon with a desired one. then save the new sfx file in the same folder of generated 7z Archive. I saved mine as 7zsdInstaller.sfx.

Step5:

We should create a config file to tell the Sfx file what to do after extracting the archive, here is the config file for the sample:

We should save it in the same folder of our 7z Archive, I named mine config.txt.

Step6:

Now we should combine our file to a single executable, to do this, first we should navigate our Command prompt to a folder we hold our generated files and then we should execute following command:

The advantages of an EXE setup are that there are many tools available for creating them, and some tools make both very simple and very complex installs easy to create.

The advantages of an MSI setup are that they can be deployed in many ways (either manually, through administrative distribution, or through a Windows feature called «advertisement») and natively support rollback for clean uninstalls as well as patching and versioning, and have logging support for resolving installation troubles. It is also possible to create an MSI package that can install without administrator credentials.

The main disadvantage of EXE setups is that they are being discouraged in newer Windows versions. Windows Vista only supports them through «legacy installer heuristics» which is an algorithm that looks at various factors (including the name of the setup package) to try to determine that the EXE is an installer package, and if it judges the program to be an installer will run it elevated upon user approval (which may require entering an admin user/pw). This is a «legacy application compatability» feature in Vista that may not be present in future versions of Windows. What this means is that an EXE setup cannot be run without administrator credentials unless it works hard to hide the fact that it is an installer.

Доброго времени суток, Хабр! Хочу представить интересный, по моему мнению, способ создания msi-инсталляторов для любого программного обеспечения и, как следствие, развертывание его средствами GPO. Подчеркну, что описанный метод не подразумевает создание «слепков» системы, а использует нативные инсталляторы софта, при чем для создания msi применяются только бесплатные для коммерческого использования продукты.

Каждый нормальный инсталлятор ПО имеет возможность автоматической установки с определенными или заложенными по умолчанию параметрами. Суть моего метода проста и заключается в том, чтобы запаковать нативный инсталлятор в «контейнер» msi и запустить его с необходимыми параметрами командной строки. В сети куча информации по автоматической установке того или иного приложения, и я не буду заострять на этом внимание. Наша цель, повторюсь, — установка ПО средствами групповых политик. Кстати, некоторые из вас могут возразить, что установку можно производить через ZAW, но, к сожалению, данный метод применим только для установки с правами текущего пользователя и не может применяться для централизованной автоматической установки приложений.
