There are plenty of tools in Minecraft that allow players to progress their weapons and armor to be even more useful than they start out. One of the main tools for these purposes is the Anvil. This heavy item is unique from everything else in the game in that it slams down on the ground hard, so you can’t place it up high, but its usefulness will come in handy for repairing and enchanting items. Here is how to make an Anvil in Minecraft.
How to craft an Anvil in Minecraft
While you can find Anvils inside the forge room of a Woodland Mansion, it is more likely you will need to craft one. To craft one, you need to collect a total of 31 Iron Ingots. Dig them up from Iron Ore blocks and smelt them in a Furnace to have them ready for crafting. Next, take 27 of those Ingots, and create three Blocks of Iron with them. Now you are ready to make the Anvil. The crafting recipe requires the three Iron Blocks in the top slots and the Ingots in the center and all bottom slots. Move the Anvil to your inventory when it is ready.

How to use an Anvil in Minecraft
To be able to use an Anvil in Minecraft, you need to have built up some levels from gathering experience orbs from things like defeating mobs, farming, and mining certain ores. You can use armor and tools with the same kind of item or resource it is made of to repair it for longer use, similar to the Grindstone. Unlike that block, however, the Anvil does not remove enchantments.

Anvils in Minecraft are used to repair enchanted armor and tools, enchant certain items, and even as traps. To craft an anvil, open the crafting grid and place three iron blocks in the first row. Then place three iron ingots in the last row. Finally, place an iron ingot in the center of the 3×3 grid. To repair an item using the anvil, place the item to repair and its respective addition beside each other and drag the output to your inventory. Similarly, to enchant items using anvils, place a tool to be enchanted and an enchanting book in the two slots and drag the resultant output.
The anvil is an expensive recipe, but it has many uses and can help you progress towards end-game tools. An anvil can help you combine tools and enchantments by spending levels and repairing tools.

How to Repair Anvil in Minecraft?
Anvils themselves cannot be repaired. Using your anvil will cause your anvil to degrade, so try not to use the anvil unless you really want to. You will need to make a new anvil if your old anvil breaks.

Repairing will cost some levels, and the next subsequent repair will cost more levels for the same tool or armor.
How to Use Anvil in Minecraft?
Place the anvil and right-click on it to open its UI. The anvil can be used to combine enchantments together. Combining two enchanted books will combine the enchantments into the same book. Using an anvil on any item will cause this effect, so stacking all of your enchantments onto a book or tool will start to cost a lot of levels.

You can use these books to enchant weapons or tools. This can also be used as a way to upgrade your enchantments. Combining two of the same enchantment together will upgrade the enchantment to its next level so long as there is another level for the enchantment to reach. If you combine a Sharpness IV enchantment with another enchantment, either from a tool/weapon or a book, it will upgrade to Sharpness V.
Trivia
Anvils have one of the highest blast resistance ratings in the game. They are on par with obsidian and are only outmatched by the naturally generated blocks in the game that are unbreakable.
If a player is killed by a falling anvil the game will state that “player was squashed by a falling anvil”.

Considering how expensive anvils can be to players with fresh worlds, they are not necessities until you are ready to upgrade your armor, tools, and weapons to have the best enchantments possible.
Anvils are some of the only Minecraft blocks—like gravel, sand, and the dragon’s egg—that is affected by gravity, meaning they fall through the air until there is any solid block beneath them. Falling anvils can actually harm a player if it hits them, meaning that they can be used as (expensive) projectiles. Anvils can even cause up to 20 hearts of damage if they fall from a height of 40 blocks.

Here is the step-by-step pictorial guide you need to follow to make an anvil in Minecraft:
The first thing you will need to make anvil is a crafting table. To make a crafting table, convert any recently acquired logs into wooden planks.
To make wooden planks, simply place the logs that were collected into one of the slots in the survival inventory crafting table, as demonstrated below.
Once the logs are converted into wooden planks, you can then progress to making a crafting table. This guide explains more about how to make a crafting table.
You will need a crafting table to make the simplest type of pickaxe for collecting your first pieces of cobblestone, as well as making your first anvil once you’ve collected all the necessary materials. You need cobblestone to make a furnace. The first part of making a pickaxe is making the sticks for the handle. You can use the survival inventory crafting table or the crafting table you just created to make your sticks.
To make sticks, place two blocks of wooden planks above each other on either the left or right side of the square, as shown above.
Now you have to make a pickaxe; this can be done by interacting with a crafting table. Next, in the crafting table, place a row of planks along the top of the crafting GUI and place two sticks under the middle plank, as seen above. This will create a pickaxe to use to collect your cobblestone—a required block for making a furnace.
Next you have to find some iron and coal.
To make an anvil, you will need to collect a substantial amount of iron. Iron is quite abundant in caves and ravines though, so it shouldn’t be too difficult or time consuming to collect the amount you require. To collect iron, however, you need at least a stone pickaxe. Iron pickaxes do work faster.
To make a stone pickaxe, you use the same recipe as stated before but replace the wood with cobblestone. An example is provided below. To make an iron pickaxe, follow the same recipe but exchange the cobblestone with iron ingots.
Iron and coal spawn quite frequently and can be found around caves and ravines, in cliffsides, or even at the surface in stone-topped biomes.
Once you’ve found coal, mine it. Coal is the easiest source of fuel to use when smelting this amount of iron, but you can also use other forms of fuel like charcoal or a lava bucket if found more convenient. Once you have a sufficient amount of coal to smelt all of your future findings, you can begin to look for iron.
Iron generates in the generally same locations as coal and can be found really easily both in surface caves and below the surface.
Once you’ve found all 31 (or more) pieces of your iron, you have to smelt them.
To smelt, use your furnace to smelt the iron down to ingots. You can also use a blast furnace, which will smelt the metal twice as fast.
First, open the furnace GUI.
Fill the top slot with the iron you wish to smelt.
Then place your form of fuel (in this case, coal) into the bottom slot.
Wait for the progress bar to fill, then collect your iron.
Once you have all 31 pieces of your iron ore smelted into iron ingots, you can proceed to making your anvil.
To make an anvil, place down your crafting table and open up the crafting GUI.
Since this recipe requires 3 iron blocks, you must first fill the crafting table completely with iron ingots three times to make 3 iron blocks.
Now that you have your iron blocks, place them along the top of the row of the crafting table. Then fill in the center spot of the second row with an iron ingot, and finally fill the entire last row with iron ingots. It should look as shown below.
Now you have an anvil!

Breaking
Each time an Anvil is used or dropped, its durability goes down. This limits the strength of enchantments it can cast and eventually, in turn, breaks it.
Enchanting
When any item is placed on the first slot on an Anvil and an Enchanted Book on the second, the item gains that enchantment. If two Enchanted Books are in the anvil, the effects will be combined unless there are two of the same enchantment at different levels. (Protection 1 on one book and Protection 2 on the other) If the two books share the same enchantment at the same level, they can be combined to create one book with the effect with doubles getting +1 enchantment effect on that enchantment. (Protection 2 on both books makes a protection 3 book with whatever extra effects were on the other books.)
Repairing
When two of the same item (or Iron and Chain armor) are placed on an Anvil, they can be combined to repair the first one. Enchantments are kept, unlike with a Crafting Table.
Renaming
The Anvil allows players to type in any name they want for an item. This costs Experience and is the only way to use Name Tags.
Dropping
Like Sand and Gravel, the Anvil will fall if the block beneath it is removed. It will be damaged depending on how far it falls, but will also cause damage to mobs and players that it hits. This feature’s use in traps is crippled by the fact that Anvils cannot be pushed by Pistons.
