Here’s how to make a lectern in Minecraft and how to use it.
Lecterns are a unique block in Minecraft that players can use to hold books in the game, but how do you make one, and is there anything else you can do with them?
How to make a Lectern in Minecraft
See the image above for an example of what the pattern should look like in your crafting table. But if you don’t have either of the required items to make a lectern, keep reading, and we will explain how to make both.
To start, if you don’t know how to make wood slabs, you can make them by placing three wood planks across the middle row of a crafting table, as shown below.
Next, to make the bookshelf, you will need both wood planks and books; when you got all of the materials, see the image below for an example of how you need to arrange the items in your crafting table. Once you got both wood slabs and bookshelves made, go back and follow the crafting recipe at the start of this guide.
How to use a lectern in Minecraft
You can use lecterns to hold book and quill in Minecraft. To do this, all you need to do is have the book and quill in your inventory and click a lectern. It will then display a book similar to how an enchanted table looks; however, holding books is not the only thing a lectern can be used for.
You can actually create some exciting contraptions using both a lectern and Redstone items; for example, as shown above, we have the lectern hooked up to a Redstone lamp and a steel door. By doing what we did here, you can then power both items by turning to a page in a book and quill that matches the line of Redstone.
For instance, the Redstone lamp shown above is being powered by the third line of Redstone, so to power the lamp, we will need to switch to the third page in the book. After this, that’s everything there is on lecterns, so get out there and create some exciting contraptions.

Make a Librarian Villager and lecture your world’s inhabitants with a Lectern.

At first look, Lecterns may appear to be nothing more than a decorative item in Minecraft. However, they do have uses of their own, including turning Villagers into Librarians and can hold a book for players to read. While you have a chance to find them in Village Libraries, you may want to craft your own. Here is how to do so.
How to craft a Lectern in Minecraft
To craft a Lectern, you need to have four Slabs and a Bookshelf. The slabs can be of any wooden type and can be mix and matched in the crafting process. To get the four Slabs, you need to craft a pack of six using three Wooden Planks. To get the Bookshelf, you either can find one in Villages or Strongholds, or you can craft it using six Wooden Planks and three Books.
When you have your Slabs and Bookshelf, go to a Crafting Table. The crafting recipe requires the Bookshelf to be in the center slot and the Slabs go in the top three squares and one in the middle bottom row. Move the Lectern to your inventory to complete the crafting process.

What does a Lectern do in Minecraft?
Now that you have a Lectern, you can place it somewhere to be a decorative item and hold a Book for you and others to read. If you would rather use it to make a Librarian Villager, trap off a Villager in a small, enclosed area. If they already have a job, be sure to destroy the job block they use. Now that you have them unemployed, place the Lectern near them and place a Bed so they can sleep and restock their trading items each day. They will put on glasses and a red hat when they become a Librarian, and when you trade with them they will offer up items like Enchanted Books and Bookshelves.
How to make a Lectern in Minecraft
Lecterns are a job block in Minecraft. They can be used to hold books or simply as furniture pieces. A lectern is an easy block to craft and you can fill in a room or utilize one as a podium. If you would like to ensure a villager becomes a librarian you will also need to make a lectern. This can be essential when you are looking for a specific enchanted book.
Required Materials for Lectern in Minecraft
— Four Wooden Slabs
You can use any wooden slab for the lectern in Minecraft. The type of wood does not matter and you can mix and match different slabs for this recipe.
The hardest part of making a lectern is making a bookshelf. The bookshelf is relatively cheap, but it can be a pain if there are no cows nearby.
To make a lectern you will need the 3×3 crafting menu of a crafting table.
How to make a Lectern in Minecraft?
In a Nutshell:
To make a lectern in Minecraft, open the crafting area made up of the 3×3 grid. Fill the entirety of the 1st row with 3 wooden slabs, then place a bookshelf in the center of the second row, and finally one more wooden slab directly underneath it. Now simply click the Lectern and drag it into your inventory.
Step-by-Step Guide(with Pictures):
Here is the step-by-step pictorial guide you need to follow to make a Lectern in Minecraft :
First start by locating some cows. You will need the leather dropped by cows to craft books which you will need to craft a bookshelf. To make a bookshelf you will need three books so hunt down cows until you find three leather.
Cows can commonly be found on grassland and will not always drop leather. Keep looking for cows until you get all the leather you need.
Next you will need paper. To make paper you will have to find sugarcane. Look around riverbeds and next to water source blocks for sugarcane.
Sugarcane will only grow on dirt or sand. Paper requires three sugarcane to make. Every three sugarcane will make three pieces of paper and you will need nine total pieces of paper for the books you need to make a lectern. Find nine sugarcane or grow it yourself to get the sugarcane you need.
Lastly you will need to chop down a tree to get the slabs you need. Turn the logs into planks and those planks into slabs.
Put your slabs aside and turn your sugarcane into paper. Arrange three sugarcane in a row to craft paper.
With your paper made you can use your leather and paper to make a book. The recipe for books is forgiving, you can place the leather and the paper anywhere in the crafting table to make a book. Each book requires one leather and three pieces of paper. Place them in your crafting table to make books.
With your three books place them in the middle row of your crafting table. Surround those books with wooden planks to make a bookshelf.
A bookshelf on its own is a nice piece of furniture, but it is also used to make our lectern. Place a bookshelf in the middle of the crafting menu and a row of slabs above it, and one slab underneath it. It does not matter what kind of slab you use to make the lectern. It will not change its appearance and you can mix and match the type of slab in the crafting recipe.
That’s all you need to make a lectern!
What does a Lectern do in Minecraft?
A lectern is primarily used as a job block for villagers. Any unassigned villager will seek out a nearby job block and the lectern will assign the librarian profession to a villager. Librarians will turn a regular book into an enchanted book. You can refresh the librarians inventory as long as they are level one and have not conducted a trade. This means you can refresh a librarian’s inventory until they sell the one enchanted book you are looking for. A very valuable enchanted book is mending as these books can only be found and cannot be enchanted regularly.
Lecterns can also hold a book and quill. This makes for a nice piece of furniture for any room in your house. You can read the book and quill from your lectern by right-clicking on it. However, you cannot make edits while it is on the lectern.
Lecterns also have an interesting use where they will emit a Redstone pulse if a book and quill is placed on one. This pulse will occur anytime someone right clicks on the lectern and will also occur if you turn the pages of the book and quill on the lectern.

If you are looking to get an “infinite” supply of an enchanted book, the lectern is how you go about it. Refreshing a librarian’s stock of enchanted books one at a time can be a long and frustrating process, but it can save you a lot of time when needing specific enchantments for your tools or armor. Lecterns are also simply a decorative block. There are not many ways you can craft a podium into your room and a lectern is a quick and easy fix in the game.

Required Materials to make a Lectern
In Minecraft, these are the materials you can use to craft a lectern:
Minecraft Lectern
Minecraft is home to many blocks and items, many of which players can craft on a crafting table. Lecterns are handy items that they can obtain by crafting and from village houses.
They were added to the game in the 1.10 update released on June 8, 2016. To craft lecterns, gamers will need one bookshelf and four wooden planks. They can be of any type, but all four must be the same plank.
How to Craft a Lectern in Minecraft
Below are the required materials and the crafting recipe used to make a Lectern.
Required Materials to Craft Lectern
In order to obtain slabs, place three wooden slabs in a row in a crafting table. While the recipe for crafting a lectern does not require any specific slabs, you will need to use the same three planks to make slabs.
To make a bookshelf, you will need a row of books in the middle of the crafting table grid. Surround the row of books with wooden planks to make a bookshelf.
Step by Step guide: How to Use/Craft a Lectern
Below showcases the step by step process in crafting a lectern. You can also find out about every use for a lectern in Minecraft.
Step 1: Craft Wooden Slabs
You will need to break down some trees to collect logs. Each log you obtain will yield 4 wooden planks and you will need 3 wooden planks to make slabs.
Once your slabs are crafted you will need to gather the parts for a bookshelf.
Step 2: Craft a Bookshelf
You will need to kill a few cows to obtain enough leather to make a bookshelf. You need 3 books so you will need at least 3 leather.
After you have obtained the leather you simply need to collect enough sugar cane to craft into paper. 3 sugar cane will yield 3 pieces of paper.
Every 3 pieces of sugar cane is enough to make 1 book. As long as there are 3 pieces of paper and a piece of leather in the crafting grid, it will yield one book. The formation of the items does not have any impact on successfully crafting a book.
A bookshelf can be made simply by placing 3 books in a row in the middle of the crafting grid. Surround the books with wooden planks to get a bookshelf.
Step 3: Craft a Lectern
Now that you have all the materials, you can finally craft a lectern! Place the bookshelf in the middle-most cell and place wooden slabs in a row above the bookshelf and one slab below the bookshelf.
Uses of Lecterns in Minecraft
1. Librarian Villager Job site block
«> A librarian in the game (Image via Minecraft)
Lecterns are a job site block for librarians. Such blocks can be used to turn unemployed villagers (except nitwits) into librarian villagers. Librarians are among the best traders in Minecraft that offer enchanted books with rare enchantments like mending.
The best part about librarians is that players do not need to level them up to get rare enchantments. They can simply convert a villager into librarians and start trading enchanted books.
If the librarian does not offer the enchantment that users desire, the latter can break and place their lectern to change its offer. They can do this as many times as needed, as long as they haven’t traded with the librarian before.
2. Placing books
«> A book placed on a lectern (Image via Minecraft)
Players can place a book and quill on a lectern. Lecterns are often used in multiplayer servers to leave a message for others. However, the books do not need to have something written inside to be placed.
To create a book with a message inside, users need a book and quill. They can craft it on the crafting table using one ink sac, one regular book, and one feather.
3. Redstone signal
It may not look like it, but lecterns can be used in redstone contraptions as well. They will emit a full-strength redstone signal when users turn a page on the book placed on it.
Lecterns are often used to make hidden doors, entrances, and adjustable enchanting tables.
