How to create resource pack minecraft

Introduction to Resource Packs

Before building your first Add-On for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, you will need to create a pack to hold your custom content. There are two types of packs that a creator can make: resource packs and behavior packs. A resource pack is a folder structure that will contain all of your custom models, sounds, textures, and other custom content. This tutorial will change the color of dirt to a bright green.

In this tutorial, you will learn the following:

Sample Resource Pack

There is a sample resource pack available on the Minecraft samples Github. it may be used to understand the structure of resource packs and to check your work after the tutorial.

Requirements

We recommend completing the following be completed before beginning this tutorial:

Building the Resource Pack

For Minecraft to find and use your resource files, you have to set up the folders and files in a particular structure. This tutorial will guide you through creating this folder and file structure.

Create a folder

In this section, you will start by creating a folder called My_RESOURCE_Pack. Well, you don’t have to call it that. In fact, you can name this folder anything you want, but the other folders have to be named exactly like this tutorial says so that Minecraft knows where to look.

Create a Manifest File

To load a resource pack into Minecraft, a manifest file will need to be created. The manifest file is a JSON file that contains the following information:

To learn more about how a manifest.json file works, see the the Addons Reference manifest.json documentation.

Minecraft will parse the information from the manifest file and display it in the Add-On section of the game. Inside the file, the information will be split into two separate sections: header and modules. The header section will contain the overall information for the pack, and the modules section will contain the dedicated packages information.

Universally Unique Identifier, or UUID for short, is a unique number used to identify different software. For Minecraft, the UUID is used to define a specific pack and to prevent any duplicate software from causing issues. For the header and modules, there will need to be two different UUID numbers entered in each of the «uuid» fields between the quotes. You can get UUIDs from an online UUID Generator such as https://www.uuidgenerator.net/.

Changing the dirt block

With the manifest file completed, you can now start adding custom content to Minecraft. Let’s get started by applying a new texture to the vanilla dirt block. The first part of the process involves creating a folder structure to hold the texture.

Creating the texture

Now that the folder structure is created, you can place your custom textures there. This little, green square is an example of the type of file created by the following steps.

How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

You can download it and save it in your blocks folder or follow these steps to create your texture:

You can now design a pattern or any artwork in the editor. To make the green square, a simple fill color was added.

Testing the pack

Now that the pack has both a manifest file and a texture file, you can launch Minecraft and test your new resource Add-On.

Pack Stacking is how content is loaded on top of vanilla content, causing each object that has the same name in both packs to be overwritten by the latest applied pack. In our example, the original dirt texture is overwritten by our custom texture.

If another pack that uses the dirt.png file is loaded after My_RESOURCE_Pack, then Minecraft will use that one instead and you won’t see that change.

Your custom texture will be used on every dirt.png block in the world, but it will not be used on blocks of dirt with grass on them because those blocks have a different name.

Troubleshooting

Resource pack woes? Troubleshooting is a normal part of any development process. Here are some places to start troubleshooting a missing resource pack.

You can use the sample resource pack on the Minecraft samples Github site to check the structure of your resource pack.

Your Resource Pack Does Not Appear in Minecraft

If your resource pack does not appear in the Add-Ons section of a world, that points to a malformed manifest.json file. Let’s investigate it.

Resource Pack Shows Up, Content Doesn’t Work

What’s Next?

With a custom texture now a part of your Minecraft world, it’s time to see how behavior packs alter existing entity behaviors. In the next section, you will add aggressive behavior to a normally peaceful cow entity.

To see examples of unchanged resource and behavior files, check out the Minecraft Vanilla resource pack and Vanilla behavior Pack.

How to make resource packs

Hello, I often see tutorials on how to install things on Windows. I decided I’d post a tutorial on how to create a Resource Pack on Windows. For convenience, I have broken the tutorial into steps.

Now open Notepad++ and copy the following text into it:

Description displays the text below the Resource Pack name and picture

If you want to change your resource pack description, change the text that says «Resource pack sample» to something more fitting. The link is here

you can open the minecraft.jar and find the files & folders for the textures & sounds

The resource pack name is the name of the folder the pack files are located

Now lets set a picture for the resource pack that will be displayed when your choosing from the different resource packs in the selection screen. Just remember that the dimensions of the picture has to be 128 x 128. I’m going to take a random bucket of lava that I had on my desktop and just set it as the resource pack picture. Drag whatever you would like to set the picture as into GIMP and click file export. Name the picture pack.png, then click export and export again.

Now we can get into editing the textures. Open the Default Resource Pack folder and open the assets folder, along with the minecraft folder inside of it. You should now see the following folders, font, icons, lang, music, records, sound, texts, and textures. The only folder we’re interested in is the textures folder. Open it. Inside should be a whole host of folders, each has different textures for all the different items, blocks, mobs, and etcetera. Minimize the Default resource pack folder. Open your resource pack and open the assets folder, along with the minecraft folder inside of it. Create a textures folder and inside of it, a blocks folder. Click on the Default Resource Pack folder to un-minimize it and copy a texture from the blocks folder and paste it into your resource pack block folder. For the example, I chose the cobblestone.png and put it in my blocks folder.

Open GIMP and drag whatever texture you chose into it. Now simply edit the texture and replace the default one that was in your resource pack.

To change any other textures just repeat the same process and make sure to put them in their correct folder.

If you would like to change the sound of something, open the Default Resource Pack folder and open the following folders, assets, minecraft, and sound. You should now see several folders, all of which contain audio from the game. For this example, I’m going to open the damage folder; you may open any folder you like. Minimize the Default Resource Pack folder and open your resource pack. Open the assets folder along with the minecraft folder inside of it. Create a new folder and name it sound. Open the newly created sound folder. Since I chose to open the damage folder, I’m now going to create a damage folder inside of sound. Create whichever folder you opened inside of the sound folder.

Un-minimize the Default Resource Pack folder and mentally select a sound file you would like to change. Keep in mind that if the sound file comes in 3 different versions you’d want to create 3 new versions. The sound files that I mentally selected were hit1.ogg, hit2.ogg, and hit3.ogg. Now open Audacity, and record something that you would like to replace your mentally selected sound files with. When you’re done creating one of the sound files, click file export, name it the name of your mentally selected sound, hit save, and click ok in the next window that pops up. For this example, I recorded myself saying ouch three different times. Click choose file and select one of your sound files created in Audacity from your computer; then click the bubble for OGG and any quality of your choice.

Open the resource packs folder and drag your resource pack into it.

Lastly, run Minecraft and you should be able to select your resource pack and view your changed textures and sounds.

Thank you for reading my tutorial, I hope it helped. If you have any questions or need help, don’t be afraid to ask.

-> Not supported in Version 1.6.x and later

-> 1.6.x and later use JSON to express animation and other effects

The format of the text file is simply numbers specifying which frames to pick (indices start from 0), separated by either commas or new lines. For example, if you would want to ping-pong an animation that has 4 frames, the contents of text file would look like this:
0,1,2,3,2,1

To make the animation slower than the default of 10 updates per second, the animation file can be specified to keep the frame for any number of ticks using an asterisk and the number of ticks to keep it. For example, to make the animation above four times slower, the file would look like this:
0*4,1*4,2*4,3*4,2*4,1*4

Download the template from the link above.

inside your newly created folder, create another folder and name this one assets. Inside assets create an additional folder and name it minecraft.

Now open Notepad++ and copy the following text into it:

Save and Close it. The description is below the name. The name of it is the folder’s name

Save it as pack.mcmeta

Create a logo for resource pack called pack.png and it needs to be 64×64 or 128×128, I don’t know which one, but try both.

Use a paint-like program to change textures.

Creating Your First Resource Pack: A Basic Tutorial [1.7+]

How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Before getting started, make sure you have a basic understanding of what a resource pack is. A resource pack is a package of files that contains all of the music, fonts, textures, shaders, effects, entities, and particles, basically everything that you will see in your game. Players may choose to edit this to make their game more detailed and pleasing, or they may do it for fun and upload their packs for others to download.

Use the Right Software

In resource packs, blocks that don’t take up an entire block (32×32 pixels) have transparent textures. In order to recreate this, you will need to download a program that allows you to edit the transparency in a photo. It will also have to allow you to draw on very small photos, especially if you are making a 16×16 resource pack. (Pixels are very small; they are the little dots that make up a computer image)

I recommend (and use) Paint.NET. It is very easy to use, and has many tools and features.

You will also need some type of file archiving program, such as WinRAR or WinZip, to test out your resource pack while you work on it. (You will also need this after you finish if you plan to upload your pack for other people to download.) I use WinRAR, it is free and is very simple to use.

Creating the Resource Pack Folder and Necessary Files

Before you start designing/editing your textures, you’ll want to create a folder for it in your resourcepacks folder, located here:

This is where all of the resource packs you have previously downloaded/used will be located. You’ll want to create your folder here.

How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Right click and create a new folder. Name it whatever you will want your resource pack to be called. For this tutorial we will call it TutorialPack.

In this folder, you will want to create three files.

Note that you would replace TutorialPack with the name of your texture pack.

Save this file as pack.mcmeta. This file MUST be saved with this ending, otherwise Minecraft won’t read your files as part of a texture pack. Place the file in your TutorialPack folder (not assets).

**In order to save with this ending, you must turn off «hide known file extensions» under «file and folder options» in the Control Panel. Otherwise the file extension will not be changed.**

3. This last file is your pack.png. This will be the icon representing your texture pack on the selection screen. This can be any image you like, and be any resolution, although it will resize to 128×128 in the selection screen.

When you finish, your TutorialPack folder should look like this:

How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

4. Now open up your assets folder and create another folder inside it called minecraft. This folder will hold all textures, sound, and animations you choose to create.

5. Open the minecraft folder and create another (yes, another) folder, and call it textures. All of the textures you create will be saved here.

6. Next, open the textures folder, and (as you can probably guess) create another folder. Call it blocks. All textures for the basic blocks will be saved here.

If you open the block folder, it should be empty (dunno why it wouldn’t be). Now it’s time to create your textures.

Since this is probably your first resource pack, it can be overwhelming to start completely from scratch. I suggest copying the files from the default resource pack and editing them to get a feel for the process. But in case you’re a daredevil, I will explain how to make one from scratch.

How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Obviously, this is undesirable, as it is nearly impossible to tell what block you’re looking at, and it will be listed as a «Locked Chest». So, make sure your image file is the correct size.

How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Now, you’re probably thinking, «Wow, that’s really small..how am I supposed to edit that??» Well, there is an easy solution (if you’re using Paint.NET). Zoom in to 1600% (CTRL & +) to see the image better. This also makes editing much simpler.

3. Create your texture.

I suggest looking up the default textures for this, as you may not know offhand what the block looks like that you want to make.

Select your color at the bottom left of the screen and draw your texture. Make sure it looks at least somewhat like the original, or you may have trouble identifying the block in game.

4. Once you have finished designing your texture, you might have to tamper with the transparency (invisible background) of the image.

**You do not need to edit the transparency of blocks that take up the full 32×32 space (ex. bricks, wool, planks, etc.)**.

How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

As you can see, there is a plain white background behind the torch. If it isn’t removed, you will see this in game:

Which is not very attractive, to say the least. How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. 2. Set the tolerance level to 25%.

3. Click the white background until it highlights a light blue color. Then press Delete on your keyboard.

You should now see a checker-patterned background behind your image. Now the white won’t show up in Minecraft.

Saving Your Texture

1. Create a folder in your My Pictures section of your library. Title it texturepack (or whatever).

Names MUST be correct for these! Otherwise Minecraft won’t know what block it is, and you might end up with that ugly error again.

1. Go to this folder:

2. Click the version that corresponds to what you’re making the texture for (In my case, 1.7.4).

Now you have a list of all of the block names for saving. (Yay How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft)

Go back to Paint.NET and save your file with the proper name in your Pictures folder. Now for the file transfer (from your pictures folder to your blocks folder). Don’t worry, this isn’t difficult.

1. Open up another Libraries window and navigate to your block folder.

2. Position both of your Library windows next to each other (your Pictures, where you saved the image, and blocks, where you’re moving the image to) and simply drag your picture from one folder to the other. (Don’t bother copy/pasting, it’s a waste of effort, and you’ll have an extra copy of the image floating around somewhere in your library How to create resource pack minecraft. Your image should now be in your blocks folder and ready to go!

Testing Your Resource Pack

To test your resource pack, all you have to do is open Minecraft (or restart it if you were already logged in), and select your pack from the resource pack selection screen.

How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

In Minecraft 1.7+, it is possible to combine resource packs, making testing much easier. Any textures that are not found in your file will automatically be replaced by the default texture that came with the game.

Click done and place the block you edited in game. You should notice a difference between that and the original.

You can also press f3+t in game to refresh the textures, if you want to go the easy route.

How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Now just repeat this process for. every. single. block. Tedious, definitely, but well worth it in the end as you see your final result.

Minecraft Java Resource Pack Creation Guide

This guide will walk you through the steps of making your very own resource pack for Minecraft. One thing different about this guide is, it’s also a resource pack! Everything covered in this guide will also be in the resource pack, so you can download it and get hands-on with everything we cover. To download the latest version, go to the releases page.

This guide has been hosted on GitHub for a reason; we want you to help make this guide the best it can be. If you see something that is wrong, or think you can expand a section to make it better, we encourage you to Fork this repository and do a Pull Request with your additions (don’t forget to add yourself to the credits)!

Table of contents

Let’s start off by answering some questions you may have about resource packs.

Are resource packs the same as texture packs?
These terms are sometimes used that way, but “texture packs” were for Minecraft 1.5.2 and before, and only changed the images the game used for things like blocks, items and GUIs. Resource packs replaced this functionality, and can also manage models, sounds, and much more.

Are they hard to make?
No, they are rather easy to do once you have an understanding of how Minecraft structures its assets folder. This guide will help you with that.

Do I have to change every texture?
No, the great thing about Minecraft is you only need to texture the stuff you want to change. Minecraft loads your pack(s) over top of the default textures, so anything you don’t change will remain the default.

What programs do I need to make a resource pack?
For most resource packs, all you need is an archive tool, a plain text editor, and an image editor.

So what is a “plain” text editor?
A plain text editor is a program that edits text files, but does not have fancy features like fonts, bold or colored text, and text size. Notepad and Notepad++ are examples of these. “Rich” text editors will not work, and using them will break any minecraft asset you edit with them, probably permanently. (Rich text editors include programs like Microsoft Word, Google Docs, etc.)

Here are some links which will be useful or needed to make a resource pack.

Before we get started I’m going to give some general advice when creating your resource pack:

Here are some common mistakes to avoid while making your texture pack.

Resource Pack Structure

Before we start making a resource pack, I’m going to go over how a resource pack is structured.

Pictured below is the resource pack template I provided the link to earlier:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

This is the main folder of your resource pack; let’s go over the files inside it.

Now let’s go one folder deeper into the pack. Pictured below is the assets folder:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

The assets folder holds all the textures for Minecraft. If you want to support Minecraft Realms or any mods, then you add the mod folder to the assets folder. Below is an example:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

The realms folder holds textures for Minecraft Realms, and the minelittlepony folder is for textures for that mod.

For now, we will only be covering textures for default Minecraft. Let’s go one level deeper into the minecraft folder:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

That’s right, it’s empty. This is where you’re going to need to make folders for the areas of minecraft you will want to change.

Let’s figure that out by looking at the default minecraft structure:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Your resource pack can contain any of these folders. Let’s go over them:

Two of these folders have sub folders, we will now go over those.

These subfolders are pretty self-explanatory:

Let’s go over the folders in the above image.

Making a New Pack

Resource Pack Folder

Now that you have a basic understanding of how a texture pack is structured, let’s start making one. You’re going to want to find your resource pack folder; it can be found at:

/Library/Application Support/minecraft/resourcepacks

/.minecraft/resourcepacks

Operating SystemLocation
Windows%APPDATA%\.minecraft\resourcepacks
MacOS
Linux

You can also get to it by clicking Open Pack Folder in Minecraft:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Once this folder is open, you are going to want to extract the template and copy that folder here:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Inside, the template pack looks like this:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Read the license and if you plan on keeping it, change the Copyright at the top in this red box to your resource packs name:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

If you are going to use it, save after editing and close Brackets. If you don’t want to use the License, delete the file.

The pack format tells Minecraft what versions this pack will work with:\

Pack FormatMinecraft Versions
11.6.1 to 1.8.9
21.9 to 1.10.2
31.11 to 1.12.2
41.13 to 1.14.4
51.15 to 1.16.1
61.16.2 to 1.16.4
71.17

Change this to the version you will be making the pack for.

The description is what appears in the game on the resource pack selection screen, It can be customized with different colors and such. See the link above about formatting codes for how this works.

Once you’ve made your changes, save and close Brackets.

Once inside, you will see a folder for each Minecraft version you have installed. You will want to go into the folder for the version you are making the resource pack for. We will be using 1.16.4 for this guide:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Wait a few seconds for it to finish, then go into the folder it made:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Most of these files are pointless to you. The only thing we care about is the assets folder at the top; go into it:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Starting to look familiar? Go into the minecraft folder:

Blocks and Items

Making Your First Texture

Now go into the textures folder:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Next go into the block folder:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

There are a lot of files in here; these are all the default block textures. For now, we are going to search for one block at a time. I’m going to be using stone for this example, but you can use any block you want.

Search for the block you want to make a texture for:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Right-click the image and click copy. Move back to your other window and paste it:

That texture is tiny. Zoom in by holding down Ctrl and scrolling the mouse wheel in:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Now that’s better. Hit the N key to switch the selected tool to the Pencil. On the left side of the screen you will see a menu of tool options; you will want to set size to 1:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Now it’s time to make your texture. If you’re reusing the existing colors in the texture, hold down Ctrl and click the color in the image you want to use. This will make it the active color.

Use the colors in the texture and make a new texture you like. This may take a while and several attempts, but don’t give up. Making textures can be hard, but I know you can do it!

Here is what I came up with for stone:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Once you are happy with the texture you have made you are going to want to export it. Hit the file menu button and click Overwrite stone.png :

Seeing Your Texture In-Game:
Once your texture has finished exporting, open up Minecraft and go to the resource packs menu, find your pack on the left, and click the arrow to move it to the active side:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Now hit done and wait for it to reload resources. Once back at the menu, create a new world and go see your texture in game:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

(The above texture has been made for demonstration purposes only; it is not used in any packs. It is loosely based on the stone in “Love & Tolerance”.)

Any block or item texture in Minecraft can be animated. Let’s take a look at one from default Minecraft, to see how they work. Pictured below is sealantern.png :
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

As you can see, it looks like it has 5 textures stacked on top each other. These are actually the frames of the animation on the block.

The frametime parameter above, tells Minecraft to hold each frame for 5 in-game ticks before going to the next one.

By default, Minecraft will play these in order. If you wanted to play them out of order, you would use the frames parameter, as shown below:

Index refers to which frame of the texture you are specifying and time refers to how long to hold that frame in game ticks.

Now that we have a general idea of how animated textures work, let’s make one. I’m going to be making an animated texture for glowstone. Here is the texture I am going to animate:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

As you can see, right now it is just a regular texture. To make it animated, we need to increase the height proportional to the number of frames we want. I want to add 5 frames, and the current height is 16 pixels. 16 x 6 is 96. Remember to include the original frame in your calculation. In GIMP, click the image button, then click canvas size:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

A window will pop up like this:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Now, you need to make your edits to make it animated. I will make a simple expanding ring for demonstration:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

We are going to want to add some parameters to this to make it work the way we want. I’m going to add the frametime and frames parameters, like this:

I don’t want it to constantly repeat. I want it to hold on the first frame for a bit, I’ll do this by adding the index and time parameters to the first frame in the frames parameter like this:

Now save the file and go into Minecraft to see how it turned out:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Works great, yay!

Resource packs come in a wide variety of resolutions, but what does resolution mean?

Resolution refers to the width and height in pixels of the textures in your pack, usually measured by the resolution of block textures.

Default Minecraft uses a resolution of 16 pixels by 16 pixels. Your resource pack can be any «power-of-two» resolution you want, from 1×1 all the way to 1024×1024. (The powers of two are: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 etc.)

For best performance, it is generally advised to use 256×256 or smaller.

Different Looks for Different Cases

Some blocks have multiple states, but look the same in the vanilla resource pack. That doesn’t mean they have to in yours! For example, you could make a pack wherein beehives look different depending on how much honey they contain, or wherein saplings get bigger when they are half-way to growing into a tree!

In this example we are going to make beehives show their exact honey level, rather than just full or not like in vanilla.

By default, beehives have two models. One used by completely full hives, and the other by empty, or partially full hives. The game knows which model to use by referencing the beehive.json blockstate file in the assets/minecraft/blockstates folder.

By default, this file looks like this:

The other 20 all refer to the beehive model, in each combination of honey level and rotation.

Finally, change the appropriate lines in the blockstate file to refer to your new model filenames. Your assets/minecraft/blockstates/beehive.json file should end up looking something like this:

Once done, go in game and see how it looks:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Minecraft supports the ability to have more than one model for a single block. With this we can make it so blocks have variant textures, to make the world look more alive.

To do this we are going to need a few things. First we are going to need a texture for each variant you plan to have. Here are the textures I will be using:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Go into your resource pack, into the minecraft folder, and make a folder called blockstate. Then, go into it and paste the blockstate you copied earlier. Now, right-click the blockstate and open it in brackets. This is how it looks:

As you can see there is only 1 variant at the moment. We want to add 5 more. We do this by adding more models like this:

To add a list in JSON, you need to use [ to start it and ] to end it. Notice where we place these in the file: after the : that tells minecraft the state to apply these models to, and at the end of the list.

Now, you are going to want to open each model, and edit it to point to the correct texture, like this:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Once you have done that for all of them, we can go in game and try it out. Here are my results:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

Blockstates also can support weighted variants, meaning we can create scarcity in our variant textures. A fun idea for this, is to hide stuff inside the barrel. We are going to be hiding a pink pony inside 15% of the barrels when they are open.

You’re going to want to start off again, by having textures already made:
How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть фото How to create resource pack minecraft. Смотреть картинку How to create resource pack minecraft. Картинка про How to create resource pack minecraft. Фото How to create resource pack minecraft

As you can see, I have 2 barrel open textures. One is normal and one has a little surprise in it. We are going to want to copy these to our block textures folder.

After that, you will want to copy the default blockstate file for the barrel into the blockstate folder for your pack. Opening it up, we see that it is rather long:

The barrel has quite a lot going on in its blockstate, but don’t be intimidated by how complex it looks; it’s easy to understand. The facing parameter refers to the direction the front or top of the block is facing. In this case, the barrel is directed by the top side. The x and y parameters refer to the rotation of the model on that axis, when facing that direction. The open parameter refers to whether the barrel is being used by a player. If true it switches to an open-top texture. Lastly, the model parameter refers to the model it will use in that state.

Let’s fix the formatting a bit, by moving the close of the first model, and open of the second to the same line. Also, let’s change the second model to be our variant, like this:

Do this same process for all the open barrel variants. When done, it should look like this:

Once you are done with everything, it’s time to go test it in game. Here is what the barrels look like closed:

Most grass and foliage in Minecraft derive its color from one of two colormaps called grass.png for grass and foliage.png for foliage, we can edit these to change how grass looks in our world.

Here is a template made by Word_Wizard:

Unchangeable plant and foliage colors:
Some plant colors can’t be changed in default minecraft, to do that you will need to use Optifine.

Here is a list of everything that you need Optifine to change:

Making a title screen panorama (WIP)

Making a panorama is pretty easy. To get started, you are going to want to find the spot in the world you want to use. I will be using this spot:

Once you find your spot, you will want to close the game and relaunch the launcher. Then go to the installations tab

Find the installation you want to use and click on the 3 dots to the right. Click edit. At the bottom of the screen that pops up, will be “Resolution”. You will want to set this to a square resolution; I recommend 1024 if your monitor supports it:

Once you have it set, hit save, then go back to the play tab and launch the installation you edited. When you get to the menu, you will want to go to options. At the top, you will need to set your FOV: to 90. After this, go into the world you want to use for your panorama. In the chat, type this command:

This will center you perfectly on the block. Press F1 to hide your UI and then F2 to take a screenshot. Do this 5 more times after running each of these commands:

Once you have all 6 screenshots done, you will want to move them into this folder on your resource pack: /assets/minecraft/textures/gui/title/background Like this:

Now you will want to rename them like this:

Particles, Icons, Environmental Textures and various other visual effects can be edited in the same way as the other textures, but advanced changes, such as to resolution variation, models, animation etc are generally not supported in the vanilla game (see Optifine below). Paintings can also be altered, including adjusting their resolution.

Pack Missing from Menu

Make sure your folder structure is accurate. In particular:

Pack Listed as Out of Date

Changes are Missing

If one or more of your changes hasn’t taken effect, an error in the output log (see below) may solve your problem. If no relevant errors are listed there, make sure the relevant files are named appropriately, and in the right places.

Purple and Black Texture

This is the default texture the game uses when it knows it’s supposed to use a custom texture, but gets confused. The good news is, if you see this error, you can guarantee the output log (see below) will have some information to help.

Animated textures not working/look weird

The output log is a handy little window which tracks a wide variety of things, mostly useful for debugging purposes. If you load your resource pack, and something isn’t working right, there’s a good chance the output log will tell you why, or at least narrow down the options.

Activating the Output Log

This will run a little window in the background, which keeps track of some things. You’re looking for yellow or red text in the log, either when the game is launching, or when the resource pack is reloaded (reload your active resource packs with F3+T, or by switching packs)

Interpreting the Output Log

The output log will be full of all sorts of stuff, but only a few lines will be useful for our purpose.

There are common error types that are valuable to debugging your resource pack:

File Not Found Exception:

This error means the game was looking for a particular file in your pack, but couldn’t find it. Usually it’s a simple fix.

This error will look something like this:

This looks complicated, but is straightforward once you know what you’re looking at. Let’s break it down.

File not found exceptions are caused by two problems:

Malformed Json Exception:

Malformed exceptions are caused when there’s a typo in the model file, it will try to tell you where that error is. It may look something like this:

This is more complicated to interpret than the file not found exception, but we can still break it down:

Minecraft is translated into over 120 languages. We can take advantage of this, by modifying the files the game references to do this.

These files are stored in assets/minecraft/lang, and are named in the format “en_us.json”, where the first two letters stand for the language, and the second two letters stand for the regional variant (in this case, American English). You do not need to make a file for every language, but be aware that players that use your pack in a language you have not altered, will not see your language changes. (A full list of supported languages can be found ____)

Let’s say you are annoyed that oak trees drop apples, so you want to rename them to apple trees.

So for our example,
«block.minecraft.oak_planks»: «Oak Leaves», becomes
«block.minecraft.oak_planks»: «Apple Leaves»,

“%s” and «%1$s” refer to variables such as a number or another string. The number after the percentage references the order. For example, we could change the string «%1$s was blown up by %2$s»
(which might say “Cultist_O was blown up by Creeper”) to «%2$s blew %1$s up»,
(which would instead say “Creeper blew Cultist_O up”)

Changing Text Color & Format

Sometimes you may want to change the color or format of text, for example, if you want to change the color of a GUI to something that would make light-grey text hard to read.

To do this, simply use the “§” symbol, followed by the number for the appropriate color or format. For example,

would result in the word “Inventory” appearing light blue, while

«enchantment.minecraft.luck_of_the_sea»: «§2Luck§r of the §1§lSea»,

would result in the word “Luck” being green, and “Sea” being both blue and bold.

Better examples including support for colored text can be found on the Minecraft Wiki Page for Formatting Codes

Minecraft sound files do not show up when you use a normal archive extraction tool. We can use a specific program to extract them though. Linked above is a program made specifically to extract Minecraft’s sounds. After they are extracted, you can see where to put sounds in your resource pack.

terrain.png in 13w01b, the last version to actually use this file.

The textures are in the Portable Network Graphics (PNG) format and can be edited with any image editing program that can handle the format including transparency. Many different programs support this, some free ones include Paint.net (Windows) (which even Notch uses), GIMP (Windows, Mac, Linux), Paintbrush (Mac), and many more. Edit each PNG file as desired and save them with 32-bit color depth to preserve transparency.

Packing and installation [ ]

Once you are done editing, create a zip file of the files modified (or, in Minecraft 1.3, you can use a folder with the files too), preserving all folder hierarchy. The root folder of the zip must have the files and folders listed below, or else they will not be changed. If you find that nothing changes when you select your texture pack, make sure that the files are in the root of the zip and not one folder in.

Windows [ ]

Select all the files (edited or not) Then choose the 7-Zip or WinRAR option after right-clicking and select «Add to archive. «. The archive will open, and you can name the file. Then hit «OK», and the program will make all the files into a zip archive. To put it into Minecraft, simply start the launcher, log in, and at the title screen go to the button «texture packs». In the lower-left, click the Open Folder button and drag your ZIP into the folder. Select your texture pack, and view it on your computer.

Mac OS [ ]

Ubuntu/GNOME [ ]

In Terminal, run this command.

. then launch Minecraft and enable the resource pack.
