Club Dance Moves for Men
Let me guess, we find ourselves in the club or at a social function.
We find ourselves watching people “get down” on the dance floor – dancing away, laughing, mingling, being silly and having fun.
But you? Unlike them, you’re standing in the corner with a drink in your hand feeling incredibly uncomfortable and out of place.
All you want to do is to join in on the fun with the crowd!
Even though if you think about it, it’s literally just walking a few feet forward and start mimicking whatever you see. However, when in the moment, it appears like an impossible task!
If you’ve been browsing around the internet for a while now searching for tips tricks and tutorials for handling this little “problem”, chances are you’ve come across some tutorials like these:
Cool but.. pretty far from what you can see yourself doing
Or you may see tutorials like this:
helpful.. but not useful
And there’s this
Really far from what you have in your mind.
“How am I supposed to pull that off?”
You may be wondering.
Where exactly to start? Hmm..
Okay, if you’re looking for some sort of assurance that you have a chance of learning how to dance and you’re looking for a simple starting point. I’m going to provide you with some valuable pointers. Also: I’m gonna be giving you a few basic club dance moves for you to get started with.
Many guys believe that dancing is something very complex and it’s either that you “got it” or “you don’t have it”.
Most times guys come to me saying things like: “I’ve never dance in my life before, do you think I have a chance?”
“I’m 54 years old and I’ve never stepped foot on a dance floor before – do you think I can learn?”
And often I hear things like:
“My girlfriend loves to dance but I never see myself as a dancer. Do you think I will be able to get started without making a fool out of myself?
Let me start off by saying – Yes! You can learn how to dance.
If you don’t have hearing problems and you have 2 legs (even if not) you can dance!
As I’ve mentioned in some of my other posts – the complicated looking dance moves that you see “pro” dancers do are simply a few one-dimensional movements combined together.
“What does that mean?” You may be asking.
Well, I want you to think of a food dish – let’s say some honey lemon chicken wings in this case! Mmmm.
The dish itself is delicious I’m sure you can agree.
However, let’s look at the different ingredients on its own.
We have some honey – sweet on its own, but that’s all it is. Just sweet.
We have lemon juice. Smells nice, but really bitter! Can’t really stand it when its own its own.
Chicken on its own – tastes like chicken. Not much to it.
Garlic – smells strong, but again, not something you would typically eat straight.
Salt- Salty as heck! Makes you throw up when you accidently eat too much at once!
what happens when you combine these ingredients together?
It becomes this new and complex mixture right? The taste is intricate and the texture is simply mouth-watering!
Point being, most “things” on its own are not very special, however, if you combine a number of them together in the right way, they turn in to something that is “functional”
Functional in the context of cooking is that you get a tasty dish!
Functional in the context of dance however, is that you get good-looking dance moves.
If you put a little extension of the knees in with a step to the left, you get a bopping dance move.
By tilting your head sideways and then tiling your body by the hips, you begin to create a waving type of movement with your body.
Much like there are recipe books for delicious cooking, there are recipes for good dance moves.
If you follow the directions correctly, you too, will be able to pull of these good-looking dance moves.
I hope this clears up some questions on your mind.
Let’s jump in and check out some dance move recipes!
First, in this video I quickly go over a simple rhythm development exercise you can use to start learning how to “move to a beat”
Here are a few basic moves afterwards you can get started with.
First – this is the butterfly groove.
This one is very versatile and can be done to slow music or fast music. As you can tell, it does not require you to move your feet. This is also classified as a bounce-based move.
Next, we will try a few step-based moves. This video will show you how it’s done!
Once you are practiced with these moves, you should be off to a great start!
As mentioned, make sure to think of these dance moves as simply combination of basic, one-dimensional movements.
Also: when you’re dancing, listen to the music! As you become better, you will notice that you listen to the music more and more and you start to “react” to the music with your dance moves automatically.
That’s all for now!

How to Dance at a Club for Guys – The Definitive Guide
“I don’t want to learn all these crazy dance routines that I’ll never end up using”
”What do you recommend for those with no problem practicing these moves at home but are nervous taking them to the club for the first time?”
“I just don’t want to look like an idiot when I’m dancing – any tips on that?”
“How do NOT feel self-conscious in the club?”
After years of coaching guys on how to dance, these questions are some of the most frequent questions I get asked.
In this article I’m going to dig deep and shine some light on this question of “How do I dance in a club?” once and for all. Also: I’ll be showing a few party dance moves that are suitable for social functions in this day and age.
What is the probably here?
We find ourselves at a club, party, social function, maybe a wedding. The music is blaring and people are going off on the dance floor. We want to get down, join in and not be left out of the fun right?
For some reason, we can’t
We feel nervous, anxious and stifled
Because we’re completely terrified of the idea of making a fool out of ourselves!
We get the mental image of the playback of these cheesy comedy movies where the guy thinks he is hot stuff. He goes off on the dance floor but ends up humiliating himself.
Kind of like what happened in HITCH the movie.
If you don’t know what I’m talking about, here’s a quick reference:
I think you’re starting to get an idea.
Pretty humiliating right? Never a position we want to find ourselves in.
Doing the opposite is no good either –
You know, standing on the sideline holding a drink to your chest or looking around pretending to act natural and cool. Since we’re NOT on the dance floor, we try to act like James Bond and be COOL. Deep down, we know that we would really rather be dancing!
Chances are you’re pretty familiar with this.
On top of this, chances are that you’ve tried practicing some dance moves at home – maybe even tried a few steps from music videos and movies.
You might have found some success practicing at home. However, for some reason, when you’re out in public – at the club, you suddenly become frozen.
You’ve practice the moves, but it still feels completely awkward to actually DO them.
It goes back to the original problem – you don’t want to make a fool out of yourself….
A strange phenomenon huh?
What exactly is the solution to this?
How exactly do you build the confidence and become comfortable to get down on the dance floor? To answer this, let me first ask you a question:
Pretend that you’ve never driven a car before – What is the best way to learn how to drive on the freeway?
Do you find a car, jump in to the driver seat and head on down towards the nearest freeway?
Probably not right?
Well it doesn’t work because first – you haven’t yet learned the skill to operate a vehicle. You’ve never done it before.
Aside from not knowing how to shift in to proper gears, steering and applying accelerating at the right time, you would likely be too scared of getting in to an accident.
Not only that you probably wouldn’t make it to the freeway, you would likely get T-boned by a bus at the nearest interaction. No good.
What is a better, more conventional approach to learning how to drive on the freeway?
Well, first you would want to learn the basics to driving a vehicle right?
Doing a few practice sessions in an empty parking lot – getting used to applying the gas, getting the feel of acceleration. Understanding when to apply the brake, how to shift in to the right gear at the right time, knowing when to release to clutch and such.
Getting used to handling the car simply speaking.
Then, understanding the road signs,
Learning how to signal and getting familiar with the rules of the road.
From there, take in to the neighborhood for a spin and get used to driving in a low-pressure, low-speed traffic.
Only then, after you’ve built up enough confidence in your ABILITY to navigate on the road safely you take your first drive on the freeway.
To put it in simple terms – you EASE yourself in to it.
You don’t learn to swim by jumping in to the deep end of the pool to start. You start by learning how to tread water and hold your breath.
You learn to walk before competing in the Olympics 100 meter dash.
The same thing goes with learning how to dance in the club.
Once you can go through the learning process in the right sequence, you will be able to “perform” even under pressure.
So what does all this mean? What is the “right sequence” you ask.
Check it out – here are the steps:
First, get the basics
This is like learning how to shift gears, press on the gas and applying the brake for driving a car. If we’re using the swimming analogy, then it’s like learning how to hold your breath, learning how to float on water or put on your swim trunks.
The basic in dance would be learning some basic steps or bopping to the beat of a song! I think this is a little obvious.
But what basic dance steps to learn?
If you search up things like “nightclub dance moves”, you will probably find a lot of silly tutorials or clips of people making a fool out of themselves – So, to make things easier, here is a simple club dance move tutorial to get you started.
This is the basic step touch – one of the most versatile and simplest dance moves known to man – err, FOR men.
Depending on your level of coordination, you may get this right away, or it may take a few tries.
Practice in front of the mirror – If you look weird, then figure out what you’re doing wrong by reviewing the video until you’re doing it right!
Next, it’s time to build some confidence.
Again, you have to first make sure the way you look when you’re dancing is up to your own standard. Before that, it’s unlikely you’ll be okay dancing in public.
You won’t dare drive on the freeway when you’re still stalling your car when practicing in the parking lot. If you’re still swallowing water when you’re in the kiddie pool, swimming in the deep end of the pool is out of the question! Same idea.
Afterwards, you want to get some compliments!
This is probably one of the quickest ways for you to start solidifying your belief that – “hey, I can actually do this dance thing”
Chances are you’ve really danced in front of others before – in other words, you still have NO IDEA what others would think. However, once you can start receiving this external validation from people, then your belief that you can dance will start to become concrete.
getting people complimenting you on your driving lets you know you’re on the right track. For swimming – same thing.
Getting compliments in low-pressure setting – will give you tremendous boost in confidence.
Let me assure you though, if you look okay to your own standard in the mirror – you’re doing great.
Last step here is to take your dance moves live! Start dancing in public!
This may sound like a stretch right now, but if you’ve done the above, I can assure you that it really isn’t.
Going back to the driving analogy, would you want to take your driving test for your licence on your first attempt driving on the freeway?
Probably not right? Because with the test instructor sitting beside you – giving you instructions and judging you, it’s too much pressure!
What about swimming? You don’t attempt to swim in the deep end for the first time with an audience 10,000 spectators and TV crew filming right?
You would probably have a friend with you on your first trip on the freeway.
When you try to swim in the deep end for the first time, you would essentially want to look casual and blend in with the other swimmers right?
We do this so there is no pressure!
How does apply to dancing?
Contrary to popular belief, your best bet is to dance in front of a lot people to get used to dancing in public.
Did I say dance in front of a lot of people? What I meant to say was to dance AMONG a lot of people.
See, if you try your dance moves out at a busy venue, chances are nobody will even NOTICE you.
You want to find the busiest spot with a dance floor, you want to go there and blend in so you can get used to your dance moves in public without drawing any attention!
And that’s pretty much it.
To summarize: Learn your basics to your own standard, build a little confidence through validation from other people and then take your moves public by dancing in a busy venue.
By following these steps, you should off to a great start!

How to Dance at a Wedding (Crash Course for Guys!)
Are you this guy at the wedding?
Do you make 4-5 escapes to the bathroom every hour just so you can avoid the dance floor?
Do you try to strike up awkward conversations with other guys at the bar just so you can kill time — and not have to dance?
If so, I know how you feel!
Before I learned how to dance, whenever I received an invitation to a wedding, this would be my immediate thought:
“Oh jeez, there’s gonna be music.. and dancing! How can I get around it…?”
Instead of seeing these parties as time for celebration, I would see them as 5 hours of MISERY! NO FUN!
Here’s the good news:
If you have a wedding event coming up in a few weeks, and you need to learn how to dance.. FAST, then this guide will show you how you can avoid being the table-hugger, and how to join in on the fun!
Kicking things off, here are the..
2 KEYS TO LEARNING HOW TO DANCE AT A WEDDING
Key #1: People don’t care that you don’t dance well, they just really want you to JOIN THEM
If you’re sitting there at the table on your own, you’re actually a BIGGER target for being pointed out for being a BAD DANCER! The ladies love to drag guys onto the dance floor, and if you’re not already on the dance floor, then you’re going to be a sitting duck!
The truth is that nobody cares that you dance “well”, they just want you to join them on the dance floor.
I know what you’re thinking though..
“I would love to join in, but when I step onto the dance floor, my feet just freeze!”
“I’ve tried to learn some dance moves, but it feels really awkward!”
I get it! And this is where the second key comes into play:
Key #2: To learn how to dance fast — you need to learn less, and do MORE
Most guys try to learn too many dance moves at once (and learn the WRONG dance moves). This is why dancing feels awkward and most guys never end up getting a hang of the skill.
In reality, it’s better to be able to do just a FEW dance moves well, rather than to know many dance moves, but not being able to do any of them properly.
To demonstrate what I mean, check out this short tutorial where I show you 2 basic dance moves:
Take a look at how these 2 dance moves make up a casual freestyle:
Now you see how it works, give these dance moves a try to these popular songs that you usually hear at weddings:
Hip Hop
Pop music
Other popular wedding songs

Easy Dance Moves for Guys
“It’s about time I learned how to dance”
“It’s about time I got this dance thing handled!”
I know that it’s a little embarrassing to admit that dancing is not your strongest skill set,
In fact, maybe dancing is not a skill set of your’s at all.
All of a sudden you turn around and realized that guys nowadays are expected to learn how to dance!
No thanks to John Trevolta, Hugh Jackman, Channing Tatum and all these ridiculous Hollywood guys setting the bars super high for us!
I mean seriously, look at Trevolta 20 some years ago — already tearin’ it up.
Hugh Jackman? Yeah he can dance.
Let’s not even talk about Channing
“Damn, how can I compete with these superstars?”
Don’t worry, allow me to help.
Here are some easy dance moves that you can pick up quickly so you can begin catching yourself up to speed.
Hip-Hop Music Friendly Dance Move
Hip Hop used to be huge in the clubs, I mean it still is, but not nearly as popular. Regardless, hip hop based dance moves are good to start off with since the music is usually slower than the other styles of club music.
This one is called the Butterfly Bounce. This one works with music that is about 95 beats per minute.
Try it out to this song.
Next, this move is the simple bop. This one goes well to the popular EDM music genre.
Since this move has smaller movements, you get to try it to some faster music! This song is much more housey, about 125 beats per minute.
Lastly, we have dance moves for slower to music. Now these moves are actually more challenging because you have to pay attention to the music and move with it!
Here are the moves.
Ready to try it to some music? Give these a go:
So, now that you’ve learned few easy dance moves, it’s time to do a little practice and take it out to public!
Practice in front of the mirror at first to make sure it’s up to your own standard.
Another tip is trying getting a video of yourself practicing. This way you can have an additional “perspective” on how you look.
And that’s about all for now!

How to dance at a party – a guide for guys
“I’ve been struggling with the idea of enrolling for a dance class as I’m extremely ashamed to dance in public because I think I cannot dance. When I attempted, to dance at a party my friends laughed at me, so I prefer not to dance now.”
“I just want basic moves that I can do so I don’t look like a dork at parties”
Dancing at parties is probably one of the biggest unspoken, nerve-wrecking fears guys experience. In this article I’m going to give you some solid, actionable steps for you to get this issue handled.
By now, we all know that – men – dancing – is becoming more and more acceptable and even POPULAR of a “thing”. In fact, it’s kind of expected of us to be able to dance nowadays!
I mean it is a good way to mingle with others, have fun, not to mention get attention from the ladies like this:
Uhh.. scratch that, not like that..
Okay all jokes aside,
Guys dancing – totally in.
But what’s this?
Gasp!
You don’t know how to dance?
Uh oh, I guess that’s why you’re reading this in the first place.
At the end of the day, we want to have fun at these parties, not just standing on the sideline watching right?
Well, I often get the question: What kind of casual dance moves should I do at parties?
How do I do them correctly?
How do I not look dumb doing them?
Well, here are a couple tips and a few easy dance moves to point you off towards the right direction.
This is a variation of the step-touch dance move.
Some additional info:
This move is great for dancing with in a circle or among your friends because it’s very “low-key”. If you’re not very confident in your dance moves yet – I’m guessing you’re not, then this move will help you blend in and get “your feet wet” without potential embarrassment.
If you mess this dance move up when you’re with your friends, chances are that nobody will notice! It’s great. It is a good crutch for you to boost your confidence and at least get used to moving to the music.
Make sure to watch this a few times and get a good hang of it. It shouldn’t take long.
I get question of “What’s a good move I can do when I’m dancing on my own?”
Well, this one is the next level up.
It’s a very good beginner solo step.
This one as mentioned is different. It’s one of my favorite dance moves by the way.
It requires a little bit more confidence to execute because you won’t have the camouflaging aid that you had when dancing with your friends. In other words, you’ll be standing out!
A few things I will point out for doing this move: Keep your hips LOOSE. What I mean by this is relax your torso so you don’t look stiff and awkward. Don’t worry, you won’t look feminine.
You want to practice this move in front of the mirror until you’re comfortable enough to do it without thinking about it.
I know that knowing how to do something is sometimes very different from actually doing the thing within context!
Kind of like singing in the shower is very different from singing in front of a live audience of a couple thousand on national television.
Rehearsing a speech on your own being quite different from delivering it at the presentation.
You get the point –
My suggestion is to stick with the basic step-touch and the step-touch variations shown in the first video. As mentioned, it’s a great way for you to ease yourself in to dancing in public. When you dance with your friends and you feel like you look dumb, it’s okay! Because you’re thinking: If I look dumb, then we all look dumb together – it’s not all that bad!
You know what I’m talking about I’m sure.
Point being – by following along to the tutorials and easing yourself in to dancing in public, you will do fine!
One thing to remember is that dancing is about moving to the music, so once you’ve gotten your moves down, stop worrying about the steps and transition over to reacting to the music. In other words, after learning the moves, it’s no longer about figuring out what to do, but seeing where the music takes you.
