How to Find Motivation

1. Just Start

Urgh. Don’t you just hate this advice?

Still, there’s a reason we’ve all heard it a million times: it can work wonders.

You don’t always need to reason with your emotions or rationalize why you need to do something. You can deal with those negative feelings later on, at the right time. Instead, try setting aside all of the negative emotions and simply START.

As the famous writer Mark Twain once said: “The secret of getting ahead is getting started.”

2. Break Tasks Down Into Small Steps

Woah… another piece of ground-breaking, never-heard-before advice, right?

Again, there’s a reason so many people recommend that you use this tactic when trying to motivate yourself – sometimes it’s the simplest things done well that work the best.

Remember, you can’t do everything at once. That’s why the painter Vincent Van Gogh said, “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.”

Here’s a method to help you find motivation to get things done: Write down what you need to do on a piece of paper. Then, write down every single step you need to take to make it happen. Finally, ignore everything except the step you’re working on.

Once in the flow, you may just find it easier to continue with the next task.

3. Create a Positive Mindset

Getting motivated is almost impossible if you’re looking at the situation from a negative viewpoint. On the other hand, positivity can be energizing and help you to motivate yourself.

So, pause and ask yourself, “what’s good about this situation?”

As the author Catherine Pulsifer said, “If we have the attitude that it’s going to be a great day it usually is.”

4. Create a Feeling of Gratitude

When you find yourself stuck in a rut, it can feel impossible to motivate yourself. So before you try to motivate yourself, take a step back and try to appreciate how you feel.

When you feel appreciation for yourself, it’s much easier to stay motivated.

One of the quickest ways to feel good about yourself is to practice gratitude – it’s almost entirely impossible to feel low and grateful at the same time.

To practice gratitude, start by writing down three things you’re grateful for. These could be anything – from your morning coffee, to your pet, or even the comfortable chair you sit on.

Ideally, you could make this part of your daily routine to find everyday motivation.

5. Be Kind to Yourself

When you procrastinate or make a mistake, it’s easy to beat yourself up. In fact, if you’re like many people, you may find that you internally “speak” to yourself in a mean way.

If you notice yourself doing this, pause and try to speak to yourself kindly instead. You wouldn’t speak to someone else that way, so why do it to yourself? You deserve your own kindness.

Try to remember your true inherent value as a human being. Then, allow yourself to gently come back to the task at hand.

6. Be Constructive

When you realize you’ve made a mistake or finally bring yourself back from a procrastination session, you have a golden opportunity to learn and improve.

Ask yourself, “Why did I make this mistake? How can I avoid making the same mistake in the future?”

The entrepreneur Arianna Huffington said, “We need to accept that we won’t always make the right decisions, that we’ll screw up royally sometimes – understanding that failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of success.”

7. Cut Your To-Do List Down

To-do lists can help us organize our tasks and focus on what’s important. However, they can also overwhelm us so much that we end up procrastinating even more.

So, if you find yourself struggling to stay motivated, cut your to-do list down to a more manageable size.

Each day, choose no more than three tasks and make that your new to-do list. Then, ignore all but the first item. You may find that with time, you can take on a longer to-do list.

8. Set Attainable Goals That Excite You

If you have a goal that feels too big or unattainable, it may make you feel crippled with anxiety and fear. This is a surefire way to prevent yourself from developing motivation.

For now, let go of goals that paralyze you. Instead, choose exciting enough goals to help you motivate yourself, but not so big that you freeze when facing them.

As the politician Theodore Roosevelt said, “Keep your eyes on the stars, and your feet on the ground.”

9. Imagine Your Future If You Don’t Change

This tip can make inspiring yourself easy: Instead of focusing on the change you want, imagine the life you’ll have if you don’t stay motivated.

Ask yourself, “What will life be like in one year, five years, and ten years?”

Here’s a motivational quote from an anonymous wise person: “You can either experience the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The choice is yours.”

10. Reflect on How Far You’ve Come

How often do you pause, reflect, and appreciate how far you’ve come?

If you’re like many people, you probably don’t give yourself enough credit for all the growth you’ve gone through.

Take a few minutes to close your eyes and remember your successes, however small – relive and feel into them.

Do this often to help you stay motivated.

11. Remind Yourself of Your “Why”

Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, said, “Motivation comes from working on things we care about.”

Keep coming up with answers until you find ones that will help you stay motivated.

13. Eliminate Distractions Mercilessly

Distractions are the enemy of focus. If you want to get motivated, you have to eliminate distractions.

As the billionaire investor Warren Buffett said, “The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say ‘no’ to almost everything.”

The saying goes, “You can have anything you want. However, you can’t have everything you want.”

So, turn your phone off and leave it in a different room. Close the door. Turn the music off. Delete distracting apps.

Remind yourself that you are not punishing yourself – you’re just focusing on your goals. Then, remember what you truly want in the long-term.

12. Commit 100% to the Deal You’re Making

Remember, nothing comes for free.

When you want something, you have to give something in return – whether it’s time, effort, hard work, or emotional discomfort.

Take a moment to recognize and appreciate the deal you’re making. Then commit to it 100%. Maya Angelou, the activist and poet, once said, “Nothing will work unless you do.”

14. Declutter and Tidy

It’s extremely difficult to motivate yourself if you can’t see your bedroom floor and your desk looks like something has exploded on it.

Have you ever heard the expression, “tidy space, tidy mind”?

What’s your environment like? Is it tidy, neat, and clean? Or is it messy and cluttered? Work from the outside in and create an environment that helps you to stay motivated.

15. Change Your Inputs

You know the saying, “you are what you eat.” And we consume a lot every day – food, music, podcasts, TV, social media.

This can help you to freshen up, get energized, and find motivation to get things done.

16. Look to People in Your Life for Motivation

Some people energize us, others we find draining.

The motivational speaker Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

So, when possible, seek out enthusiastic, motivated people to spend time with. Let yourself get wrapped up in their positive energy, and you may start developing self-motivation, too.

17. Ask for Help From Friends and Family

If you’re really struggling to motivate yourself, consider asking a close friend or family member for help. You could ask them to hold you accountable and check up on your progress.

By expressing your goals out loud to someone else, it can help to make them feel more real. Plus, if you know someone will check in on your progress, you may be more likely to follow through.

19. Follow Inspiring People Who Motivate You

There are so many inspiring people out there who can help you to motivate yourself. Is there an entrepreneur, teacher, musician, or politician you find inspiring?

You can also learn how people you admire stay motivated, and then apply the lessons to your own life.

As the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates once said, “Smart people learn from everything and everyone, average people from their experiences, stupid people already have all the answers.”

19. Listen to an Upbeat Song

If you need to motivate yourself quickly, try this super-simple tip: listen to a song you love that’s upbeat, inspiring, and full of energy.

For bonus points, dance like a crazy person at the same time.

Then, as soon as the song finishes, don’t pause – dive straight into action. It may become one of your favorite ways to stay motivated.

20. Remember Your Power and Potential

Look, you are powerful, and you have enormous potential.

You may not feel like it sometimes, and you may even feel like I’m silly for saying it to you, but it’s true.

The author Alice Walker said, “The most common reason people give up their power is because they think they don’t have any.”

So, please, take a moment to dig deep and try to connect with your inner power and potential – imagine what you could achieve.

Then listen to that quiet voice in your head saying, “You can do this.”

Motivation FAQs

How to find motivation?

The hardest part of finding motivation is often starting your search. You don’t need a perfect plan to get started. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by a task or full of negative emotions, find something small—no matter how small—to get started. This could be as simple as something you’re already doing—like reading an article on motivation.

Where to find motivation

You may find it difficult to get motivated to complete a big task or achieve a goal that may take years to realize. One way to find motivation is to break things down into smaller tasks. That way, you can make real progress in a day (or maybe just an hour or a few minutes).

You may also want to do a “retrospective” on achievements in months or years past—you may be surprised at how far you’ve already come.

What to do when you have no motivation

You don’t have to find motivation on your own. If you’re feeling stuck or preoccupied with negative energy, ask friends or family to provide more perspective or help you talk through your goals.

Don’t have anyone to talk to right now? There are hundreds of inspirational personalities online who share their wisdom in every format—short and long, text and video. Find a few people in your area (e.g., business, relationships) who fill your inbox or social media feed with positivity.

If you are having trouble on how to overcome a lack of motivation: Here is the list of causes that creates a lack of motivation with solutions for each problem. Find out which one of these causes stopping you from taking action.

Causes of lack of motivation

1. No progression in life:

When we are keeping all our efforts, yet we see no signs of progression in life, It’s common to feel stuck and being misunderstood by others or by ourselves.

This leads to create insecurities and often demotivates you to take any further action and eventually, you give up.

Solution: If you are fully aware of yourself – and when you know what you are doing and why you are doing it, that’s enough.

Keep giving the best of your ability without concerning anyone’s judgments.

I truly believe great things take time. Remember, one step at a time. No sooner you will witness your little results if you keep the consistency.

2. Being completely comfortable with uncertainty:

Being comfortable with uncertainty is by far the best approach to avoiding fear or life’s adversities. However, too much comfort makes you unmotivated to take any action and leads you to feel worthless in life.

Solution: Sometimes, you need to face the challenges instead of avoiding. You need to aim high and work hard if you really want to enjoy the rewards of your efforts.

3. Stuck in the past trauma:

Everyone has a past somewhere that sucks. Not completely, but for sure some part of it is filled with beautiful memories.

And rest with horrible experiences that no one wants to share with anyone.

So, they live in the same loop subconsciously by punishing themselves without even realizing how much they are destroying their own fate.

Solution: If you do not know how to get motivated – the only way to get back to your normal life after your past trauma is to reflect, analyze, repair your broken pieces, redesign and move on.

There is no other way. It’s hard, but it’s your own journey. You need to motivate yourself if you care for your life and want to accomplish a name for yourself.

4. Fear of failure and results (Negative thoughts):

Fear is the top most emotion that demotivates people not just to take actions but even to dream high.

People normally won’t even begin to put small efforts and decides that it’s going to be failure and feels that it’s not their cup of tea. With such pessimism and negative thoughts, how can someone stay motivated?

Solution: Fear is inevitable, whether you allow it or ignore it. It always stays with you.

However, to get motivated all the time you must manage your thoughts and discover your way of approach to life. Your thoughts change only when you realize your nature, and values and decide what to do with your life for the rest of your breaths.

5. Gave up on life:

Not everyone knows how to figure out their lives. It’s not about the question of their abilities.

It’s just because of their inability to act as per their instincts and go forward. So, they utterly fail in realizing their worth and give up on life. Such a disgraceful cause and terrible reason for the lack of motivation.

Solution: Bring courage to yourself. Visualize beyond what you see. Pay deep attention to your thoughts and observe what’s actually happening within and around you.

You will begin to notice patterns that motivate you to take risks. Create a proper strategy to calculate the level of risk and rewards. Then take actions as soon as possible. And readjust them until you see the results.

6. Settling for less:

That’s a great mind shift for a contented and peaceful living.

However, If you settled for less not by your realization, but purely because of lack of motivation. And feel guilty for not chasing what you want, then there is a problem in your decisions.

Solution: You need to realize that – if not more, at least you can have what you deserve. Know when to be satisfied with life and when to fight for life.

If you just keep yourself low, then you are never going to grow as an individual. We all have something to learn each day.

There are so many things to accomplish and know yourself better with each new experiment. It’s more helpful to keep yourself motivated and worthy to strive for something better.

7. No support:

Sometimes, you do what you are supposed to do and work out everything that benefits others.

Yet, no one supports your cause and appreciates your efforts. And that’s a terrible feeling. You find no motivation to continue your job. That perfectly makes sense.

Solution: Not everyone understands how important is to yourself whatever the work you do.

If no one supports you, then it is either they are extremely jealous of your work or they don’t even care what you do, or else your work is not up to the mark. You know yourself better.

So, find out your answers and work on it, period. Otherwise, you always have choices.

Life is full of possibilities and opportunities. If you see beyond your means, you find ways to motivate yourself and support yourself irrespective of anyone’s validation.

15 Questions to ask yourself to get motivated

How to get motivated when depressed?

It’s not that easy to become self-aware and motivate yourself when you completely feel stuck in life.

My advice is that, whenever you feel lonely and depressed for any reason.

Do not sit idle or do not think of the same thing again and again. (I mean avoid repetitive thoughts on the same incidence)

Instead, pick one subject or one idea you are most passionate about, and give your best efforts without thinking of any outcome.

Just work, period. In the process, you will realize so many things without anyone’s help. You will come to know what to avoid, and what to consume. What suits and what doesn’t.

Eventually, you will learn, evolve and adapt to the new changes within you with a great clarity filled with motivation, and get inspired to take action in every situation.

How to get motivated for work?

The simple solution to get motivated for work and to stay motivated to work every day holds in, what is the purpose behind doing that particular job.

Just understand, you are not doing anything for anyone. You are doing your work or job for yourself.

To satisfy your intellectual ability and to support yourself. Make yourself clear with that. Then, act irrespective of the results to improve yourself.

If you really care what you are doing and that’s going to affect people’s lives tremendously, then keep going.

Sometimes, we all spend our entire energies in the wrong places. In, the first place that is our faults.

Nonetheless, that’s fine. That is how we learn and grow. Just make sure to find the right people and represent appropriate masterpiece of work people with similar values and interests.

Then you begin to see your results not just in case of monetization but people who generously show up to care and support for who you are as a person.

Still, even after you put your whole life, yet no one comes forward then you can always have choices in life to move on and work on yourself for the better with the best.

Just do not give up quickly on any work, if it is the only that makes you feel alive. Otherwise, prepare yourself to explore life.

Final Thoughts:

Every second you are wasting, costing the fortune of possible growth opportunities.

Every thought you are thinking costs your whole life.

If you want to save your lifetime, distract yourself from your own thoughts that bring you down and get yourself into the moments of actions that bring you closer to yourself.

Do what you are supposed to do, make connections and relationships with the right people who have similar visions as you.

That’s how you grow. This is the right age and time to completely turn inwards and hustle. We have very less time on this earth than we normally expect.

So, do whatever you can, no matter what age you are at. And accomplish everything that is ever possible within your abilities. My best wishes to your future.

Want to learn how to get motivated?

On this page you will learn a step-by-step checklist on what you need to do to get inspired and take action towards getting stuff done!

START HERE

The most important thing you need to understand about how motivation works is this:

You will always move towards what you define as being more “pleasurable” and…

You will always move away towards what you define as being more “painful”.

The keyword here is define.

The way human psychology works is that once we create a set of beliefs about what we like and don’t like (or agree with or don’t agree with), they run on autopilot.

When you entered into this world, you have been making decisions each day about what you define as being pleasurable and define as being painful.

Once you make those decisions, you file them away and move along your life and everything you come upon in life gets filtered through those beliefs and they become habits.

You never need to “find” motivation to eat your favorite foods or watch your favorite shows.

At some point you made the decision that you loved those things and now you are always automatically going to do those things habitually without hesitation or even thinking about it.

They run on autopilot and you don’t have to “find motivation” to do them.

So if you are not motivated to do anything right now it’s because you have defined that task as being more “painful” than “pleasurable”.

And this…

“What you resist persists” – Carl Jung

What this quote basically means is that anything you avoid or put off will just get bigger and louder.

You cannot avoid life.

You cannot avoid your self.

You cannot avoid personal responsibility.

If something is there, it is there for a reason.

It is there to send you a signal and say, “Hey, you need to look at this and do something about it.”

You must face it otherwise the issue will just continue to cause you pain.

What many people fail to realize is that any challenge that presents itself in your life is there to serve you as an opportunity to learn and grow.

However, if you avoid the issue by procrastinating, it becomes your burden.

So stop avoiding your responsibilities, step up and face them, and become the better version of yourself now.

Step 1 – Don’t Judge Yourself

The first thing you need to understand is that it is common for anyone and everyone to lose motivation in life or business.

It happens to the best of us.

Life is a series of phases where there are many ups and downs. This is why Buddhists focus so much of their practice towards finding contentment because in the Western world of “Happiness”, you need to understand that what comes with the highs also comes the lows.

So the first step to getting motivated is to take it easy on yourself, don’t judge or beat yourself up, and know that life is a series of ups and downs where some days you feel great, other days you feel ok, and other days are “low energy days”.

So right now, you are not motivated. You’re fine. There is nothing wrong with you and there is no need to play the “victim role”.

Step 2 – Know Your “Why?”

Whatever it is you need to be motivated for, why are you doing it in the first place?

If you need to be doing something you don’t want to be doing but have to, then find a creative way to do it. Make it an adventure.

You get to create your life each day so even if you have to take out the garbage, make it fun.

If it is something you want to be doing but have lost motivation for, then remind yourself “why” you wanted to do it in the first place.

We are all driven by purpose.

And more importantly, we are all driven towards what brings us more “pleasure” and moves us away from “pain”.

So whatever you need to do right now, define it in your mind that if you don’t do it, it will bring you more pain and that by doing it you will have more pleasure.

Step 3 – Follow Your Excitement

Your body already knows how to get motivated.

It’s called excitement.

The definition of excitement is “something that arouses enthusiasm and eagerness”.

This is very similar to knowing your “why” because ideally you should be following your excitement in life.

If you are, then should be motivated to do the thing you need to do.

However, where most people get lost with excitement and motivation is that they don’t connect the “small thing” to the “big thing”.

For example, if you have to do a mundane task that you don’t enjoy, if you don’t connect it to how it relates to your excitement, then it will be just that: a mundane task.

Your excitement is literally your bodies translation and signal that is telling you “go this way”.

If you are not excited by what you are doing, then there are two reasons for this:

A. You are not really excited by it

B. You are not excited about “how” it needs to be done

The “how” is where a lot of people get tripped up. Change the “how” and make it more fun and you will see yourself get motivated.

Step 4 – Take Baby Steps

One of the keys to goal setting is chunking things down and taking small steps towards your goal.

The mind tends to get overwhelmed with all the things that need to get done and will therefore feel like its some daunting task.

Take small steps.

Put one foot in front of the other.

And all of a sudden you will see yourself taking action and the rest will follow.

But whatever you do, don’t procrastinate.

Once you do, it will become a habit and then it becomes easier and easier to put things off until one day you wake up twenty to thirty years down the road and realize that you have not done much with your life!

Step 5 – Face Your Fears

Chances are if you are not motivated towards taking action is because there is a fear attached towards doing so.

Remember, you will always move away towards what you “define” as being more painful.

So the question you must ask yourself is this: “What am I afraid of?”

Write down all your fears on a piece of paper or Word/Google doc.

Then look at them.

Then ask yourself this question: What is the worst that could happen?

Write down your answers.

Now you are facing your fears.

Step 6 – Simplify Your Life

If you are feeling overwhelmed, it may be time to simplify your life.

Many people who lose sight on how to get motivated do so because in general, their life has too much going on.

If you have taken on too many responsibilities, you are going to need to prioritize them and, as painful as this may be, let some of them go.

Our minds and hearts like to do a lot.

Unfortunately, logistically, there may not be enough of you and time to do it all.

The question you need to ask yourself is this:

Is it more important that I do all of these things the right way or are you okay doing them all but not to the best of your ability?

Also, don’t you want to enjoy yourself in the process of doing it?

Way too many people are trying to get so much done for the sake of doing it yet very few of them actually enjoy themselves.

Take the time to do a few things the right way and enjoy yourself.

You’ll feel much better about it in the end.

Also, just because you say “no” to something now does not mean you will say no forever. Set it aside for the time being and come back to it later.

Step 7 – Use Breathing Techniques

In yoga, there is a breathing technique called “Breath Of Fire”.

This is a very powerful technique that brings a lot of energy into the body.

If you ever see athletes pump themselves up before they play, they are sort of doing the breath of fire technique.

Basically, you are bringing oxygen in and out of the body extremely fast and this will energize you.

Here is a short tutorial. Make sure you start slow and don’t over do it.

Step 8 – Use Inspirational & Motivational Quotes

Positive words have a very powerful effect on the mind. They can completely alter how your neurons are firing.

If you want to pump yourself up, check out our ultimate guide to inspirational and motivational quotes.

Find some quotes that you really like, and then read them over and over again.

In fact, if you are familiar with Tony Robbins, he said that one of the biggest reasons he was able to succeed was by using incantations which is basically a form of affirmations that he would repeat over and over again to psyche himself up to get accomplish his goals.

Step 9 – Move Your Body

If you are living a sedentary life, then you need to move your body.

Whether it is walking, running, spinning, yoga, pilates, basketball, soccer, tennis, surfing, whatever, it is your responsibility to “find your thing” that moves your body.

Going for a brisk walk in the morning for twenty minutes and then doing some jumping jacks is a great way to kickstart your motivation and mental capacities.

However, while walking is nice, you will definitely feel more energy coursing through you if you did something that really raises your heart rate like running, bike riding, or some form of aerobics or High Intensity Interval Training

Step 10 – Visualize The Outcome

Because we are motivated by pleasure, it is important that you spend time visualizing yourself experiencing the outcome of whatever it is you need to get motivated for.

So spend a few minutes visualizing yourself experiencing the outcome.

Step 11 – Experience Small Rewards

If you are taking baby steps towards your goal, then you should experience some rewards.

Once again, we are all motivated towards pleasure and if you reward yourself, then this will motivate you to continue pushing.

For example, when you go to work you will get a paycheck within a week or two. And then you will use that paycheck to go to dinner and the movies.

That reward will keep you going. This is why being an entrepreneur is so hard because the payoff or reward won’t be for quite some time.

So make sure to reward yourself so that you experience the pleasure of what you are doing.

Step 12 – Create A Healthy Morning Routine

We are all the sum total of our habits.

Focus, discipline, and getting motivated all stems from what we do each day.

By establishing a healthy morning routine and constructive daily habits, you will create momentum.

This momentum makes it much easier for you to always be in a motivated state so that you don’t have to find ways to get motivated.

Note: The fact that you are reading this is a signal that you probably don’t have good habits because people who do, rarely lose motivation.

Step 13 – Ask For Help

Don’t be embarrassed to ask for help.

We all need help.

Even the biggest CEO’s and experts all hire consultants, coaches, and mentors.

If you have taken on a big task then find someone who has already done what you want to do so they can guide you.

If its something “more simple”, then ask a friend or family member to support you.

Whatever you do, don’t box yourself in and feel like you need to go it alone.

Step 14 – Be Held Accountable

This is somewhat relatable to asking for help but a bit different.

The idea here is that you want to tell someone what your goal is and be held accountable.

By putting it out there, this will help you to get motivated to do what you need to get done because its no longer something that you have committed to yourself.

It’s out in the world now and you have told people so you will be motivated to take action because you don’t want to let them down.

Once again, this is why having a coach or mentor can be quite helpful.

Step 15 – Remove All Distractions

Distractions are the number one killers of motivation.

Your phone, email, TV, etc. are all things that will take away your attention from what you should be doing: taking action.

One thing at a time.

Turn off the distractions!

How to Get Motivated When You Don’t Feel Like It

You’ve probably noticed that it’s hard to be motivated all the time.

No matter what you are working on, there are bound to be days when you don’t feel like showing up. There will be workouts that you don’t feel like starting. There will be reports that you don’t feel like writing. There will be responsibilities that you don’t feel like handling. And there will be “off days” when your energy and emotions are in the gutter.

These fluctuations are part of life, and I face these motivational challenges just as much as the next person. However, for the important things in my life, I’ve also developed a system for dealing with these “off days.”

Let’s talk about that system and how it can help you perform well even when you’re not feeling motivated.

What Baseball Can Teach You About Getting Motivated

I played baseball for 17 years, mostly as a pitcher. During my final season, I had a pretty good year. I was selected to the All–Conference team, I was chosen as the top male athlete at my university, and I was named to ESPN’s Academic All–America team.

But it wasn’t always that way…

Just a few years earlier, I was the only junior to be cut from my high school varsity baseball team. I played on the JV squad with all of the sophomores and didn’t make the varsity team until my senior year … when I threw a whopping 11 innings all season.

There are dozens of reasons for my transformation from high school through college (great teammates, coaching, work ethic, and so on), but there is one thing that I learned to do in college that I wish I had learned much earlier…

I developed a pre–game routine that allowed me to perform well, regardless of whether I was motivated or not.

How You Can Use a Pre-Game Routine to Get Motivated

One thing that makes baseball different from most other sports is the sheer number of games that are played. Major League Baseball teams play 162 games in a season — twice as many as the NBA and ten times as many games as the NFL. Even high school baseball players will routinely play 40 to 60 games each year.

With so many games, there will always be days when you don’t feel motivated, when your body is tired, or you’re just not mentally “up” for the game. In that way, I’d say that baseball is a lot like life. There will always be days when the things that are important to you feel like a grind.

But the game is going to be played whether you feel like playing or not, so you better figure out a solution to overcoming your lackluster emotions. I did this by developing a pre-game routine that would automatically pull me out of a funk and push me over that threshold to perform well.

Here’s what my pre-game routine looked like…

Grab a baseball and my glove. Jog out to the outfield foul pole. Jog across along the outfield wall. Stop at the opposite foul pole. Stretch hips and hamstrings. Jog back along the outfield wall. Toss lightly, working back to 75 feet or so. Head to the bullpen. Stand one step behind the mound and toss three or four times from there to the catcher. Step up onto the mound. Toss a few pitches without going into the full windup. Start throwing from the windup for 10 pitches or so. Throw from the stretch for 10 pitches or so. Finish with one of each pitch (change up, curveball, fastball in, fastball out). Walk to the dugout.

That whole sequence usually took 20 to 25 minutes and I did it the same way every single time.

While this routine physically warmed me up to play, it also — and perhaps more importantly — put me in the correct mental state to compete at a high level. Even if I wasn’t feeling up for the game at the beginning, by the time I finished my pre-game routine, I was in “game mode.”

In other words, it didn’t matter if I came to the ballpark motivated to play. My pre-game routine started a cascade of internal events that pulled me into the right frame of mind and made it more likely that I would succeed.

Imagine if you had a routine that could pull you into “exercise mode” or “work mode”, no matter how little motivation you had at the start.

If you look at top performers in any field, you’ll see similar patterns all over the place. NBA players who do the same thing before every free throw shot. Comedians who recite the same words before they step onto stage. Corporate executives who follow the same meditation sequence every morning.

Do you think these people always feel motivated? No way. There are some days when the most talented people in the world wake up feeling like sluggish lard bombs.

But they use their pre-game routines to pull them into the right mental state, regardless of how they feel. You can use this same process to overcome your motivation threshold and consistently exercise, study, write, speak, or perform any other task that is important to you.

Here’s how to do it…

How to Get Motivated: 3 Steps For Developing Your Routine

Step 1: A good pre–game routine starts by being so easy that you can’t say no to it. You shouldn’t need motivation to start your pre–game routine.

The most important part of any task is starting. If you can’t get motivated in the beginning, then you’ll find that motivation often comes after starting. That’s why your pre–game routine needs to be incredibly easy to start.

For example, you could create an exercise routine that starts with filling up your water bottle. That way, when you don’t feel like working out, you can simply tell yourself, “Just fill up the water bottle.” Your only goal is to start the routine and then continue from there.

For more about the importance of getting started, read this.

Step 2: Your routine should get you moving towards the end goal.

Most of the time, your routine should include physical movement. It’s hard to think yourself into getting motivated.

What is your body language like when you’re feeling unmotivated or lacking energy?

Answer: You’re not moving very much. Maybe you’re slumped over like a blob, slowly melting into the couch. This lack of physical movement is directly linked to a lack of mental energy.

The opposite is also true. If you’re physically moving and engaged, then it’s far more likely that you’ll feel mentally engaged and energized. For example, it’s almost impossible to not feel vibrant, awake, and energized when you’re dancing.

While your routine should be as easy as possible to start, it should gradually transition into more and more physical movement. Your mind and your motivation will follow your physical movement.

Related: physical movement doesn’t have to mean exercise. For example, if your goal is to write, then your routine should bring you closer to the physical act of writing.

Step 3: You need to follow the same pattern every single time.

The primary purpose of your pre-game routine is to create a series of events that you always perform before doing a specific task. Your pre–game routine tells your mind, “This is what happens before I do ___.”

Eventually, this routine becomes so tied to your performance that by simply doing the routine, you are pulled into a mental state that is primed to perform. You don’t need motivation, you just need to start your routine.

If you remember the article on the 3 R’s of Habit Change, then you may realize that your pre-game routine is basically creating a “reminder” for yourself. Your pre-game routine is the trigger that kickstarts your habit, even if you’re not motivated to do it.

This is important because when you don’t feel motivated, it’s often too much work to figure out what you should do next. When faced with another decision, you will often decide to just quit. However, the pre-game routine solves that problem because you know exactly what to do next. There’s no debating or decision making. You just follow the pattern.

How to Get Motivated: Make Excellence a Routine

You can train yourself for success just as well as you can train for failure.

Today you may be saying, “I need to be motivated to get anything done,” but I guarantee that it doesn’t have to be that way. If you’ve taught yourself to believe certain limitations, then you can also teach yourself to break through them.

The patterns that you repeat on a daily basis will eventually form the identity that you believe in and the actions that you take. You can transform your identity and become the type of person who doesn’t need motivation to perform well.

This is why it’s so critical to do your pre-game routine every time, not just when you’re struggling with a lack of motivation. These small behaviors reinforce your good habits and the feelings that come with them. Pretty soon, your pre-game routine will not only be a trigger that kickstarts your habit, but also a reminder of what you’re working towards and the type of person you are becoming.

This is the difference between approaching life as a professional or an amateur.

If you only work when you feel motivated, then you’ll never be consistent enough to become a pro. But if you build small routines and patterns that help you overcome the daily battles, then you’ll continue the slow march towards greatness even when it gets tough.
