Blackheads—the ever-elusive enemy. Although barely detectable, they’re one of those maddeningly minuscule things (like a stray brow hair or a chipped nail) that we’re painfully aware of but that may not be all that noticeable to an innocent bystander.

However, unlike an uneven nail or brow, blackheads are complicated. They’re difficult to get rid of, and most experts agree that the best way to remove blackheads is to visit a professional. But what happens when we’re short on time (or funds) and need a pesky blackhead banished stat? Though there’s no shortage of blackhead-busting products on the market (namely masks, pore strips, and cleansers), is it even possible to get rid of blackheads overnight? To be honest, we’ve never had much luck with quick, over-the-counter fixes, so we decided to ask celebrity esthetician Renée Rouleau and board-certified dermatologist Shari Sperling straight up: Is it possible? And if so, how do we do it?

Meet the Expert

Keep reading for a step-by-step guide on how to remove blackheads overnight.

Use Antioxidant-Rich Products to Prevent Blackheads

Contrary to popular belief, those teensy dark spots (which tend to show up on the areas of the face most prone to oil—nose, chin, T-zone, etc.), aren’t actually the dirt-clogged pores we always assumed them to be. According to Rouleau, “Blackheads are large, open pores containing hardened sebum, or oil, that has oxidized from the air causing it to turn dark gray in color.”

She goes on to note that antioxidant-rich skincare products can help keep blackheads at bay. “Antioxidants used in skin care products have many benefits such as encouraging collagen production, lightening discoloration, and slowing down the production of skin-damaging free radicals, but one surprising benefit is their ability to prevent oil from oxidizing, hence the name ‘antioxidants.’”

A powerful matcha-infused face cream like this one from Byrdie fave brand Peach & Lily can help prevent the formation of blackheads while still being gentle and moisturizing on skin.

Use Salicylic Acid Products to Keep Pores Clear

We know and love salicylic acid for treating acne, but the wonder ingredient can also help with blackheads (and whiteheads, too!). To keep blackheads at bay, both Sperling and Rouleau suggest using products with salicylic acid to keep pores clear, as it works to fend off dead skin cells and oil, both of which can be contributing factors to the onset of blackheads. “Once the pores are clean, it’s important to use products in your routine that use acids, such as AHA’s and BHA’s, to absorb directly into the pores and keep them cleaned out, as well as preventing the oil from filling back up so quickly,» she says. Sperling adds that the benefits of salicylic acid are to help unclog pores and overall, make the surface cleaner for blackhead-free skin.

Alpha-hydroxy acids are a group of acid compounds, most often derived from plant-based sources. There are a variety of different ones out there, some of which include glycolic (derived from sugarcane) and lactic (derived from sour milk). While they all act on the surface of the skin as chemical exfoliants, they differ in size, and subsequently penetration and potency.

Get the best of both worlds (AHA’s and BHA’s) with this peeling solution. Fair warning though, it’s strong, and should only be used by experienced users.

Apply Retinoids to Shrink Pores

While there’s no magical cure to get rid of blackheads completely, if you’re dealing with severe acne in addition to blackheads, retinoids may be the answer. Rouleau says that the use of retinol or prescription retinoids can tighten the pores so they appear smaller, which in turn, keeps blackheads virtually invisible. Sperling adds that «retinols work to increase the turnover of cells and promote new cell growth and collagen production,» not to mention they can make the other products in your skincare regimen more effective since they will be able to penetrate deeper without being blocked by clogged pores.

Retinol is derived from Vitamin A. Once it is absorbed into the skin, it is converted to the active form, retinoic acid, which encourages faster turnover of skin cells, increased collagen production, and lightening of hyperpigmentation.

We recommend this serum from Overt, which contains 2.5 percent retinol to even out the skin tone and increase cell turnover for smooth, blackhead-free skin.

Clear Out Pores With a Mask

If you have oily skin, you’re likely a user of clay masks (PSA: if you’re not, you may want to look into them). Though clay masks are meant to draw out dirt, oil, and other impurities from the skin, some formulas can also work to clear out and unclog pores. Opt for a kaolin clay-based one meant to balance oils and give pores a major detox.

Like clay masks, charcoal-based face masks are meant to rid the skin of toxins, dirt, and oil. Because these types of masks can make the skin feel parched, Sperling recommends using them about once a week to avoid excess dryness. And always be sure to follow up with a heavy-duty moisturizer post-masking.

Activated charcoal is created from carbon-rich materials burned at high temperatures, like coal, coconut shells, and wood. In skin care, there are claims that it binds to and removes impurities from the skin, but more research is needed.

A favorite in the Byrdie office, you’ll definitely feel the glow after using this mask from GlamGlow, which contains six exfoliating acids and activated charcoal to give you the cleanest pores.

Exfoliate Regularly To Maintain Clean Pores

«Blackheads are caused by clogged pores from oils in the skin, makeup or moisturizers used on the skin, and bacteria,» says Sperling. «AHA’s, such as glycolic acid, and BHA’s, such as salicylic acid, work well to exfoliate the skin. BHAs penetrate deeper into the skin and have both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties so they are good for treating blemishes in acne-prone skin.» Exfoliants can help rid the skin of blackhead-causing sebum and product build-up, but because they can also strip the skin of moisture, Sperling recommends using them once a week.

Not only does this scrub from Tula smell delicious, but it also fights off blackheads, minimizes pores, and gives you smooth skin.

Use a Non-Comedogenic SPF to Avoid Clogging Pores

When dead skin cells mix with excess oil on the skin, a clogged pore can rear its ugly head, and cause a comedo (aka a blackhead). That’s why choosing non-comedogenic products (meaning, products that don’t contain pore-clogging ingredients) is essential for everyday wear, especially if you’re a heavy makeup wearer or prone to breakouts. Generally speaking, most non-comedogenic products will also be oil-free, making them useful for those with oily skin to begin with. And because sunscreen is something that should be worn daily (seriously—please protect your skin every day), it’s crucial to opt for a non-comedogenic formula for the sake of your pores.

When choosing makeup and skincare products, steer clear from ingredients that may cause clogged pores like coconut oil, beeswax, avocado oil, and glycerin.

We like this SPF 30 from Everyday Humans because it won’t clog your pores and works great for those with sensitive skin.

Just like other acne, blackheads can eventually go away on their own. Using products to help treat blackheads can make the process go faster.

There are many reasons why blackheads may suddenly make an appearance in your life including hormone changes, stress, or taking certain medications.

If you’ve successfully removed a blackhead from your skin, you may notice a hole left in its place. There’s nothing to worry about, that is just your pore that is enlarged, which should return to normal.

Bored of blackheads living rent-free on your face? You’re not alone, because those pore cloggers are a real menace, scuttling into the most thoroughly cleansed of chins and noses with unparalleled audacity.

‘Blackheads tend to present in oily complexions, as they’re a form of acne. In simple terms, the oil gland produces excess oil, which then mixes with dead skin cells and other debris inthe pore lining,’ explains Dr Ewoma Ukeleghe, WH Columnist and Cosmetic Doctor.

‘This congestion then travels through the pore to the skin’s surface, whereit’s exposed to the air, causing it to oxidise and turn black. And while whiteheads and blackheads actually both consist of exactly the same material – grime build-up, sebum and dead skin cells – blackheads only present in open pores that are exposed to oxygen, while whiteheads form in pores that are closed,’ she adds.

Want to know how to get rid? WH asked the pros to reveal their failsafe ways for removing blackheads.

Why do I have blackheads?

‘Like any form of congestion, they can be caused by so many different things, such as an excess of sebum, or an issue with the skin’s own exfoliation process,’ reveals Jennifer Rock, creator of The Skin Nerd online skin consultancy and the author of The Skin Nerd: Your straight-talking guide to feeding, protecting and respecting your skin (£17.99, Headline) tells WH.

1. Hormones

‘These can have a huge effect on the formation of blackheads, which is why they’re prevalent during puberty. Hormone changes lead to a spike in sebum production and thickening of the skin, which in turn blocks pores. That said, hormonal acne can affect women at any age. Premenstrual tension, the contraceptive pill and conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome all cause hormonal imbalances,’ says Dr Ewoma.

2. The type of make-up you are wearing

‘Other triggers include comedogenic (aka pore-blocking) beauty products – from face creams to foundations– humid environments, shaving, sweating,’ she adds.

3. Oral medications

‘Particularly ones that encourage rapid skin cell turnover, such as Roaccutane, and evensome steroid-based medication, which can open the pores and oxidise what lies beneath,’ clarifies Dr Ewoma.

Okay. So, assuming that you want to get rid of your blackheads, where do you start? From how to cleanse (properly) to the alt form of exfoliation to try, here’s the expert verdict.

How to manage blackheads

‘When it comes to treatments, forget the numerous blackhead ‘hacks’ found on theinternet. Pore tweezers, Pepto-Bismol, pore strips, abrasive scrubs and suction devicesshould be ignored as they’re unlikely to remove blackheads and can cause irritation and even skin damage,’ advises Dr Ewoma.

How do you get rid of blackheads, instantly?

Renée Rouleau, celebrity esthetician and blemish busting hero, explains that extraction is a quick way to eliminate blackheads. She advises the below steps. You will need:

1. Apply a Moisturiser

‘After showering or cleansing, apply a thin layer of the heaviest moisturiser to the area to remove blackheads and clogged pores. This will create a temporary, occlusive seal to keep the heat trapped in the skin.’

2. Soften the Skin

‘Cover the area with cling film/plastic wrap and apply a hot, damp washcloth. Then, using a second hot washcloth, apply it on top of the other one. Layering the washcloths will ensure that the heat is retained in skin. It’s important to have the skin as soft as possible for safe extractions and the easiest removal.’

3. Re-apply Moisturiser

Remove the washcloths and plastic and re-apply moisturiser to maintain skin’s softness. More than likely, it will have wiped off onto the washcloth.’

4. Extract using your fingers

‘Wrap a tissue around each forefinger and gently squeeze to extract blackheads and clogged pores. The goal with squeezing is to avoid positioning the fingers too close as this will block the blackhead from coming out. Widen them out a bit so that the blackhead will be extracted from the deeper levels of the skin.’

Is it okay to squeeze out blackheads?

Yes, but Renée’s general rule ‘is if it does not come out after three tries, don’t do it any longer or there’s a risk of damaging the skin or potentially breaking a capillary.’

How do blackheads differ from whiteheads?

‘Whiteheads occur when dead skin cells, oil (sebum) and dirt become trapped in the pores, they differ to blackheads as they are closed within the pore whereas blackheads can be pushed or squeezed out.

How to get rid of blackheads completely: the expert’s take

1. Double cleanse

‘When you’re wearing makeup daily and essentially walking around collecting airborne pollutant particles, you need to double cleanse,’ Rock says. ‘My preferred mode would be to remove make-up with my Cleanse Off Mitt, and then follow it up with a traditional cleanser.’

2. Drop some acid

Okay, so you’ve cleansed until the cows come home. Now what? ‘Two words for you: salicylic acid,’ Rock says. ‘Salicylic acid is an exfoliating, oil-soluble beta-hydroxy acid that helps to speed up skin cell turnover whilst also dissolving debris within the pore.’

She says that using one of these ‘every second or third night, after you’ve removed your make-up,’ should make a world of difference.

Dr. Dennis Gross, dermatologist and founder of Dr. Dennis Gross skincare, agrees. ‘Salicylic acid is a great choice for blackhead-prone skin,’ he says. ‘This is because beta hydroxy acids, such as salicylic, exfoliate on a deeper level, reducing the number of pore blockages.’

3. Consider your moisturiser

‘If you are prone to getting lots of blackheads, make sure that the skincare and make-up you’re using are non-comedogenic. This just means that the ingredients don’t clog pores,’ Rock says.

‘Rich moisturisers, designed for those with mature or dry skin, tend to contain ingredients like certain plant oils that are fabulous when used on the skin they’re designed for, but can be congesting when used on oily or spot-prone complexions.’

4. Stop scrubbing

You were likely introduced to the whole concept of exfoliating via grainy scrubs. For problem skin, it’s best to leave those back in 2004, where they belong, sadly.

‘Whilst gentle physical exfoliation can be useful in certain cases, it should generally be avoided if you have any red or inflamed spots as it can make these worse,’ explains Justine Kluk, consultant dermatologist at 25 Harley Street.

‘I would also advise against using a scrub or grainy exfoliator entirely if you are using an acid, retinol or retinoid as you may over-exfoliate and irritate your skin significantly.’

5. Don’t be scared of product

Rather than assuming that a multi-layered skincare routine is to blame for your blackheads, get smart as to the exact formulations that are right for you. ‘It’s not about the amount of layers, it’s about the quality of the products,’ Rock says.

‘Many who are oily or prone to congestion overcorrect, and cut any form of hydration [i.e. moisturiser] out of their skincare routine. This means they will continue to see blackheads but their skin will also be dehydrated.’

Never forget, you are a special and unique snowflake – and your skincare regime should speak to that.

‘It is actually ideal to have a toolkit of products with different types of ingredients in your bathroom cabinet to match to your skin’s concerns on the daily. I would be oily and prone to breakouts in times of stress, for example, but I still cocktail three to four serums together and apply them as a concoction,’ Rock says.

‘Without them, I’d see more breakouts, not fewer. I am a firm believer in mixing and matching products to tailor my own routine.’

6. Opt for mineral make-up

Be very careful around heavy-duty foundations, concealers and setting powders.

‘Whilst occlusive heavy-coverage or long-wear concealers, foundations and compact powders may create the illusion of clear skin at a distance, they are basically acting like cement, clogging up your pores,’ says Dr Anita Sturnham, a dermatologist and founder of Nuriss Skincare & Wellness Clinics.

‘This blockage traps oil and bacteria along with old dead skin cells, which ultimately leads to more breakouts.’

Rock is on the same page. ‘Your make-up is usually on your skin for 12 hour periods. Depending on the type you’re using, it can either help or hinder your skincare regime.’

Why? ‘Cosmetic make-up tends to be congesting for many, due to not-so-skin-friendly ingredients. Its often designed to camouflage and mask the skin without looking after it.’ The better alternative is mineral make-up.

‘As in, fully, 100% mineral,’ Rock adds. ‘It sits on the pore, rather than in it, and is naturally antioxidant, hydrating and light-protective. When it comes to specific products, she says:

‘I am far too fond of Jane Iredale Glow Time BB Cream, as it is mineral, full coverage liquid. You can apply it with your fingers and it always looks fabulous.
