Team Fortress Wiki:Wiki Cap
Wiki Caps are awarded to valuable contributors to the Official Team Fortress Wiki. The Wiki Staff gather together to discuss Wiki Cap candidates; each candidate and their contributions are evaluated and discussed, at the end of the discussions the staff vote on whether or not to award a Wiki Cap to that candidate.
Contents
Nominations
Anybody is free to nominate Wiki contributors to be Wiki Cap candidates. See the nominations page for details.
Discussions about Wiki Cap candidates are held privately by the Wiki staff, however discussions are logged on a per-candidate basis. Logs can be accessed here by entering the editor’s Wiki username and generated per-candidate password. Nominated candidates can request their password by contacting WindPower via the Wiki’s EmailUser page. Please only do so if you have been nominated.
Eligibility factors
The following things are taken into consideration when reviewing candidates.
Note to translators
The community values and appreciates your effort to translate articles. In order to maximize your contribution, please prioritize the articles you choose to translate. Articles linked to from the front page are usually the highest priority, while low traffic pages like patch notes are near the lowest. Spend the rest of your time working to improve the English version of the Wiki so you have great articles to share in your own language.

How can I find help?
A lot of our editors are regularly active in our IRC channel. You can feel free to mention any questions you have there.
Additionally, feel free to post on the talk page of any of the staff (moderators and administrators). They would be glad to help with any issues.
How do I get a Wiki Cap?
Are staff hired by Valve?
No. All editors are volunteers only. There are a number of Valve representatives however, and they can be found listed here. Please do not contact them with queries; instead, pose questions to the IRC channel or a discussion page.
Do staff receive ‘insider info’ on Team Fortress 2?
No. They do not have any secret information regarding upcoming patches, items or gameplay changes. Information on updates are obtained by monitoring feeds and mailing lists. Information on items and gameplay changes are often found on forums and are simply collected by editors and put into articles.
How can I become a moderator?
There is no ‘application process’, and instead, qualified users will be selected when the need arises for new moderators. The majority of the time, there is no need for any new additions to the team.
As for localization moderators (or ‘loc mods’), generally one user is selected from each translation group to head translation efforts. Localization moderators are only assigned to the most active languages with more users. If a particular language requires more general moderation, please make a mention of the issue in the #tfwiki-staff IRC channel.
How quickly is new content added to the Wiki?
As quickly as possible. Users attempt to gather all the information they can and add it to the wiki as it is received from Valve. Pictures, galleries and undocumented content will be added as they are taken or discovered.
Why two wikis? tf2wiki.net and wiki.teamfortress.com?
In 2007, the first wiki for Team Fortress 2 was created at tf2wiki.net. The wiki was maintained and expanded by the community at that address until June 2010, when Valve accepted the idea to host the site. A copy of the wiki was made and placed at wiki.teamfortress.com, and the majority of users from the old site migrated with it and continued to expand it at its new home. The new wiki, known as the «Official Team Fortress Wiki», would also incorporate information about Team Fortress and Team Fortress Classic. Valve also added links from the Mann Co. Catalog to wiki pages with item details, and frequently links to the site from other web pages. The Wiki Cap was also introduced as a way to reward editors who have made significant contributions to the site.
While all this was taking place, however, the old wiki at tf2wiki.net still existed with a decreasing number of active users. The tf2wiki.net domain and control of the site was auctioned online, changing the owner of the site multiple times. Valve has indicated that it has no intention to purchase the domain. As the number of active users fell, tf2wiki.net’s content quickly degraded and became out of date. The tf2wiki.net domain is now a wordpress domain.
Suffice to say, the most accurate and up-to-date of the two sites is the Official TF Wiki at wiki.teamfortress.com.
Is the wiki GDPR compliant?
No, nor does it have to be. The Team Fortress Wiki is a collaborative community project aimed for documentation purposes only and are not affiliated with any organization and/or company. Although Valve hold the copyright and have officially endorsed the wiki to be an official resource, we are not affiliated with Valve and do not share any personal data between them or any third-parties.
How do I delete my wiki account?
Editing
Before I get started editing, what should I do?
The first thing to do is read through the Help:Contents page which can be found on the left toolbar under «Help». Here you can find information about editing and the wiki in general. Check out the Tasks page to see what might need to be done.
Where can I find a listing of all the code syntax for editing?
For quick reference, Wikipedia has a Cheatsheet with some of the most-used code that applies to wiki editing in general. It also has a full Wiki markup page that contains most of the code that would ever need to be used.
What do the colored plus and minus numbers mean next to an edit?
They represent the number of bytes (or characters) added or removed in a particular edit. For example, (+264) means there were 264 bytes in total added to the page. (0) indicates that content was changed, but the amount of bytes remains the same.
These numbers are not related to points or scoring in any way. They simply indicate at a glance what was changed in one particular edit.
I made an edit and it disappeared, where did it go?
Check the article history by clicking the ‘History’ tab at the top of the page. It shows the edit history of the article and a reason should have been given for the removal of an edit.
Where can I track my personal edit progress?
If you are logged in you can either click on the ‘My preferences’ button in the upper right corner of the page to see your total editcount, or for a more elaborate overview of your edits you can click on ‘My contributions’ which is also located in the upper right corner of the page. This will give you an overview of all of your edits and information on when they were added, if they have been undone, and allows you to search for certain edits if required, among other useful features.
Where do I go to discuss a page’s content or edits I have made on a page?
What / who is WindBOT? Why is it always changing my edits?
WindBOT is an automated editing bot run by WindPower. It monitors the recent changes feed for pages, scans and then edits them according to a list of filters; among the most common of the bot’s tasks are correcting capitalization and misspellings, links, templates and applying other fixes.
How can I get WindBOT to stop editing a page?
More complicated cases can be added to WindBOT’s page blacklist.
Is there a way to automate tedious or repetitive edits?
If the scale of the changes to be made is large, it is best that you propose the change on Team Fortress Wiki:Discussion or another appropriate talk page to first gain consensus. Once it has been decided what to do, it is best to then contact a user who maintains a bot account (see Help:Group rights#Bots). These users may offer assistance in automating a number of tasks.
Additionally, WindBOT automatically makes changes to pages appearing in Special:RecentChanges, and reads from a list of filters. For proposals of new filters, please post them on the filter’s talk page.
Someone has made a bad edit, what should I do?
If you feel it is in your ability to correct the bad edit, please do so by clicking on ‘View history’ on the upper right corner of the page and clicking the ‘Undo edit’ button next to the name of the last editor. Make sure to note clearly why the edit is being undone, as it is important to make this clear to all editors to prevent misunderstandings. Additionally, you can post to the talk page explaining in more depth the reason for undoing the edit.
If you feel you cannot rectify the bad edit please contact another editor who can. The best way to do this is to ask someone on the IRC channel.
Talk pages
What is a talk page?
Every article or page has a talk page associated with it. This is a place where editors can discuss the page in detail regarding edits or content. To get to a page’s talk page, click the Discussion tab at the top of the page.
When should I use talk pages?
You should use the talk page when:
How do I use talk pages?
Post like you would on a regular article, but make a new heading for new topics. If you are replying to a previous editor, tab over your comment using colons (:) in order to make it easier to read. Once you are done typing your comment, sign it by adding (
) to the end of your comment. This will add your name, a link to your userpage and the date of your post. For an example of a formatted talk page, see Team Fortress Wiki:Discussion.
My talk page is getting really long, what should I do? Should I delete it?
The most popular method for maintaining the size of talk pages is to archive them. See Help:Archiving for more information.
Alternatively, you can delete the text from the page and provide a link to the revision with the text (either by copying the «Permanent link» in the sidebar or selecting one of the links in the page history).
Images
How do I upload images?
First of all, see the image guidelines for information regarding images and uploading. On the left sidebar, there is a link to «Upload file». Here you may choose a file from your computer to upload to the wiki. be sure to describe it well in the description box. Also, choose the appropriate licensing for the image. Add categories to the image as well before uploading by adding them to the summary box (Ex: add [[Category:Heavy images]] for any images involving a Heavy). Before uploading, ensure that there are not already images that could be used instead of the one you are uploading by searching for it.
How do I change an uploaded image?
You need to upload a new image over top of it. Simply go to the file’s page and click «Upload a new version of this image». Sometimes the image may not update right away and may continue to display the old image for a while. This is expected and it will update automatically given time. Please do not continue to upload the updated image.
What if I want to upload an image for my userpage?
In that case, upload the file as usual, but add «User USERNAMEHERE» to the front of the image name. For example: User Firestorm Sentry.gif. Also, under licensing, choose «User page image».
Why do some images appear stretched or sometimes appear as the wrong image? Why don’t images appear immediately after uploading?
Images uploaded to the Team Fortress Wiki are placed into a «Cache» where they are stored and are shown to users. Often, this cache takes some time to update when new images are uploaded to the Wiki. In this case, the image may change resolution, but will not appear as the correct instance. If this happens, do not upload again. The cache will update within the next few hours automatically and your image will be displayed.
There’s a poor image that needs to be improved, what should I do?
Go to the file page and click the «Edit» button. In the edit box, add <

Wiki Caps are awarded to valuable contributors to the Official Team Fortress Wiki.
There are certain eligibility guidelines in place. While the hat is available as a reward to valuable editors, its main purpose is to provide incentive to editors to increase the quality and breadth of information on the wiki. Thus, it requires some degree of effort on your part if you are interested in obtaining it.
As a general guide, the current recipients share the following qualities:
*Demonstrate a strong desire to help improve and update the Wiki through useful edits and contributions.
*Participate in the community by contributing to discussion. We also have an IRC channel where you can get to know and become part of the regulars!
*Adhere to the policies and practices of the Official Team Fortress 2 Wiki, including observing the style guide and the official policies.
*Roughly 400 or more edits. If you are having trouble finding things to do, take a look at the tasks list.
Note: It’s incredibly easy to determine if individuals are spamming edits to artificially inflate their edit count. Edit spammers will jeopardize their chances at earning the hat.
*Properly implement licenses on images, sounds, and any other kinds of uploads, media or otherwise.
*Been around a little while. 2 months or more.
Note that these are simply guidelines. There will be exceptions. If you feel you missed out by mistake, you can contact any of the people with green names in the recent changes feed and we can have a look.
*Our resident bot WindBOT periodically compiles a list potential candidates based on a number of rules. As the rules are quite complex, it’s only used as a guide. Appearance or absence from the list does not guarantee your eligibility.
*At least one Wiki Cap will be distributed per week. This means the hat is accessible and regularly available.

trivial addition; M. Bison Homage
It seems that this hat ( Wiki cap) pays strong homage to the hat the M. Bison wears from the Street fighter series.Judging by the fact most hats that pay homage to some other fiction work not it in the trivia page. examples of this are the Whoopie Cap, the Tough Guy’s Toque, and the the Respectless Rubber Glove.I also looked through the archives and saw that there was no definitive answer if it should be added Schrodingerscat 03:30, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
you can say it looks like m bisons hat because its the same color and the golden eagle seen on m.bison’s was replaced with the team fortress cross hair logo but its not that much of a direct reference to m.bison but like alex said theres no proof otherwisePeter Antonio Filippis 01:02, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

Team Spirit Paint?
Just curious, there’s a Question-mark for Team Spirit paint under the Wiki Cap. My question is this: Does Team Spirit paint affect hats that already change color based on team, and if so, should we leave an «X» or something there to denote whether or not you can even get that hat? It’s a nit-pick, but it sort of looked to me as if «there is this sort of hat out there, but we don’t have an image yet.» StarYoshi| 21:06, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
An image has yet to be retrieved. There is no attribute that prevents specific paints from being used. Psychopath 21:08, 22 November 2010 (UTC) Pretty sure we’re still working on the Team Spirit color for the hats. The procedure we use to get hat colors differs from the norm, so it’s on standby. It is suggested however, to post on talk pages frequently, as discussion about an article’s content can still lead to improvements overall, as well as lending legitimacy to your edits and making you a more active member and therefore more eligible to the humans who decide who gets the cap. Lost Hope
Okay, after awhile with editing and translating the english and norwegian TF Wiki parts I feel like its no use to get on the Candidate List. I really put efford and thinking about the community but it’s just not good for em’ at all. Im not saying «Please, put me on the List!» but Im just sick of translating by myself and dont have any others to help me.. As this leads up to, I will not going to ask more then this: Can you guys just tell the exact guideline to me as an translator and dont put up so many huge contributors (even they deserve the Cap) all too often? Ravecrib9t4 20:16, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
I’m sorry, but your edits were insufficient (not by far) for your name to appear on the list. We can still consider you for voting if you’d like, but there are, as you mentioned, other «huge contributors» (each of them putting quite a lot of effort too) which have not received the cap yet, and who probably will before you. Part of your problem seems to stem from the lack of other Norwegian translators. I think the best thing you could do is to recruit other Norwegian speakers you know. Recruitment, while it doesn’t «count for points» on the list, is still a great contributing factor, and it would also make editing the Norwegian pages more fun. Editing the wiki by yourself is no fun, so we appreciate your work so far
Gallery?
I just have a few image-related questions about this article. Foremost, why isn’t there a gallery of images with every class wearing the cap yet? I know we have quite a few talented image makers. It even seemed as though it was getting a bit of progress there for a bit. I’m guessing the hat just positions badly in HLMV? Is that a problem everyone has with it?
Hey by the way, Demoman’s gallery image is the old broken one. Need a new image with fixed version.Shadowcon66 03:45, 4 January 2014 (UTC)
Do multiple changes to the Template:Dictionary/price section at once count as multiple edits?
Recently I noticed that there were many inaccuracies within the «Template:Dictionary/price» list regarding hat prices, so I did a massive edit and corrected them all in one go. Will this count as multiple edits since I changed the prices of many hats within the section, or does it only count as one edit since they’re all on the same list? I don’t really care since I’m more in this to improve the Wiki than score a Wiki Cap, but since I’m doing this anyway I figured I’d check and ask a question that could prove useful to those who do seek the Wiki Cap. Getting WikiCap without being a translator
Most wiki cap recipients are translators. What exactly does one need to do in order to get a wiki-cap without being a translator. There’s not really any major things someone can do. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by DracoX872 (talk) • (contribs) 17:59, 12 September 2011

When are the nominations choose? As far as I know, one month?
Please don’t open 2 discussions about the same topic. Also, this does neither belong here, nor on Talk:List of Wiki Cap owners, it belongs on Team Fortress Wiki talk:Wiki Cap, but please don’t open a third discussion on that now. You can find available information about the Wiki Cap here, but you shouldn’t think too much about the Wiki Cap and just do a good job contributing to the Turkish section and have fun. If you’re doing great contributions over a longer time span, you will get the cap sooner or later. About your question: There’s no specifc date where nominations start, if another contributor thinks you deserve it, then he’ll nominate you. This initiates a nomination process including min. 5 staff members that are going through your contributions and checking if you’re «ready» for it. This nomination process takes about 4-6 months by experience. — shots fired by: Nikno <Talk | Contribs> 02:50, 5 February 2017 (PST) I already contribute to my purpose here. sorry, but my english is not great whats does this mean?:
i wish i could get it. but i just have 100 edits. working on translations. and i have no idea what this means. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jem (talk) • contribs) 2010-11-06T15:48:51
The first part means that you show dedication in your work, and you try to talk to others about your edits, on talk pages, etc. to make sure your edits are good. The second is a bit of the same line, talk to other editors! Discuss your edits with others to make sure you’re doing the right thing. A wiki is useless if we don’t talk together. The third is pretty simple—follow the rules as they’re put in place, as opposed to going around and implementing new styles constantly. We need consistency. The final you mention simply has to do with licensing and categorising images properly whenever you upload them, so you don’t leave others to go around and pick up the pieces to make sure things are licensed and categorised properly. There’s more information about that particular topic.
ok, then all is good for me. noy, need 300 more edits:( but, i am dutch so i go further with translating Jem 20:34, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
The Jig is up Smashman
Smashman, You know that people will do anything for a hat, so you give some criteria for contributions that are HELPFUL, the only way to get the hat is to be HELPFUL. The mindless spammers will become more intelligent in their conquest for said hat. Mission F*CKING ACCOMPLISHED!

Further Clarification
There were a few people in the IRC who thought that only 1 person is getting a hat per week, limiting to 52 people getting a wiki cap per year. Read the final line on the page:
That means that anyone who qualifies for a wiki cap and is «aok’d» by the staff should be receiving a wiki cap on that given week. I recommend the wiki cap guidelines page have that highlighted in bold or something so people stop brewing up misconceptions. Psychopath 01:14, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
Question No.2
I want to know if is it needed to have the same email adress as your steam login to get the wiki cap. I have a different one here, but the username/loginname is the same. Never thought about that before, and i don’t think i will get a wiki cap in the next 3month; but i would like to ask about how do you get your cap first, not that i’m afraid that you leave me out 🙂
NoWhereMan/Godlike11219 11:39, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
If I understand the way things work correctly, you will be contacted by the Wiki staff for your steam id, it’s not tied to sharing the same username, login name, nor your email address. Hope that helped clear up any misconceptions. If I’m wrong, someone please correct me. Psychopath 19:17, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

It basically means that you should follow the rules and make sure that everything that you create on this website is yours and not copyrighted material created by someone else. Also, stay active and try to help the community. These guidelines are fairly subjective, meaning that there is no specific hard «rules» regarding them. Hope this helps. Wiki Hat Revocation?
This has been of primary interest since the Wiki Hat first came out. Naturally, some will work at earning the hat just long enough to actually get the hat, then, once they’ve earned it, they’ll disappear forever; given this situation, will Wiki hats ever be revoked or are they permanent? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Fox McCloud (talk) • contribs) 21:26, 7 November 2010

One of the guidelines states that you must properly implement media like photos and videos (something like that). Just to clarify, do we actually need to add some sort of media not just edits to be eligible for the cap? — The preceding unsigned comment was added by TC370 (talk) • (contribs) 2011-03-01T02:24:48
No, it just means that if you do add media like photos and videos, you should be able to do that correctly (proper file name, categories, description, and embedding/linking to them correctly on pages) — Wind 07:33, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Cap Time Limit?
The article doesn’t mention anything about one, but will there be a time limit in order to receive the cap, and/or is there a limit to how many users will receive one? This is just so I don’t feel rushed to meet the requirements so I can focus better on helping the community rather than being distracted by a prize like the Wiki Cap.

PeacekeeperRen 01:35, 10 November 2010 (UTC) I heard that currently the Wiki is capped at handing out 50 caps.— Focusknock 08:42, 1 March 2011 (UTC)
Question
Before I ask, yes I did read how to get it but Im kinda confused here.
Do I only have to have 400 edits and be here for about 2 months to get it, or do I have to do everything on the guidelines?

Right editing not right?
I got a question too like someone posted farther up, I also really try to help out here on the wiki, however so far some top users say my edits are «redundant» and remove them. So the question is How exactly do you really know what someone intentions are if they keep getting «redundant»? And sens my edits are being remove doesn’t that me its like a step back from 400 edits?—Awesome Weegee 11:13, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Question, or two of them.
Who I need to contact all about that ‘prioritize the articles you choose to translate’ deal? And do I need to ‘somehow’ link my wiki account with Steam’s one? Or this is simply a crazy talk and there is no such function? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by MentulMaet (talk) • (contribs) 2010-11-23T05:02:59
The Wiki Cap
Catch-22
(Joke) If someone works hard to contribute to the Wiki and is a valuable member to the community in all regards, but was truly only interested in the cap from the start, does that disqualify them? Cronie 10:03, 23 December 2010 (UTC)
No. The cap is there for the very reason of attracting editors; it would be nonsensical to «disqualify» editors because of it. (P.S. dirty story: It’s how Smashman «recruited» me as a mod originally) — Wind 10:16, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

What? No don’t write crafting combinations anywhere. — Moussekateer · talk 14:17, 6 January 2011 (UTC) I don’t understand what you’re trying to ask (maybe the SMS english doesn’t help) but every blueprint for Crafting are written Here (For the Headtaker or every other weapons too). About the amount of Edits
This has been bugging me for a while.
So, I have been around here for a week now, and I’ve been translating some articles to Finnish. The question is: Do translating whole articles count as a same kind of edit than fixing a couple of typos? I’m currently translating weapons, because all the hats are already translated. But translating an article of a weapon takes much longer time than translating a hat. Are patch notes the same thing, too? I’m also translating the «Team Strategy» article because it’s #6 on the most wanted translations. It takes a loong time to translate it all, so I save the article to Notebook. Does the finished Team Strategy/fi count as one edit, too? Jwso 19:48, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
points = (rules[‘namespaces’][n][‘points’] * rules[‘newPageBonus’]) + (row[‘newsize’] * rules[‘newPageByteValue’])
(whatever points you would get for an edit in this namespace * New page point multiplier) + (number of bytes (characters) of the page * byte score multiplier)
Assuming you’re creating an article containing 5423 characters in the main namespace (points = 1), and using the current-values-at-the-time-of-posting-this as shown on the rules page (User:WindBOT/WikiCapRules), the formula would then be:
(1 * 3) + (5423 * 0.001) = 8.423
Hope that clears it up, we want to be as transparent as possible about this. This being said, you shouldn’t worry to hard about this. Contribute, and points will flow naturally. — Wind 23:09, 31 January 2011 (UTC) Thanks! I did try to read the rules, but I didn’t understand any of it D: Jwso 13:21, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
Adding Pictures
I want to be able to add pictures about items, hats, and painted varients of hats, how is that done? Like to have hats and painted varients behind a white background, as shown on this website Doktorpsyko 00:24, 16 July 2011 (PDT)
This isn’t exactly the right place to ask, but you should look at this tutorial. Thanks

Great Idea
i’m actually really happy that a wiki has gotten so much support from the game it represents, and that they give such motivation as this hate to promote activity on the wiki, I for one will glady attempt to get this hat 😀 Zachariah Zuan 07:44, 31 July 2011 (PDT)
Are the guidelines supposed to be translated?
I cannot find any articles that have translated the guidelines. Is this on purpose? Hachach19 10:01, 5 August 2011 (PDT)
Yea, a lot of articles in the ‘Team Fortress Wiki’ shouldn’t be translated as we don’t want the guidelines to be lost in translation. — Moussekateer · talk 10:05, 5 August 2011 (PDT) Okay, thanks a lot. Hachach19 10:07, 5 August 2011 (PDT)
