Persona 5 is full of polish, allure, charm — and more than 100 hours of gameplay. This guide and walkthrough will show you everything you need to know.

Persona 5 uses a variety of social stats that allow you to interact with different systems in the world as well as increase your relationships with others. One of the easiest stats to consistently raise is knowledge. Knowledge helps with strengthening relationships with specific confidants as well as performing adequately in school.

If you have played for even a few in-game days, it should be apparent why knowledge is so easy to come by. Periodically, teachers will try and stump the new kid with a question. Sometimes this is about history, art or even English. If you answer the questions correctly, you will be rewarded with some knowledge points. Your teacher and classmates will also be impressed.

Most knowledge gains will come from doing things in class. However, you can also take this power into your own hands. Go to the school library after classes are finished and study in the corner. This will also gain you a few points in the guts social stat, although being in public could potentially distract you from studying, lowering your knowledge gain.

Another option is to study at Cafe Leblanc. Lucky for you, Sojiro has no problem with you using the cafe to study, so sit down at a table in the evening and work on school work. If it is raining outside, you will get gain more. Speaking of Cafe Leblanc, there will occasionally be quiz shows on the TV. Answer those correctly for additional knowledge as well.

Around exam time, your friends may also ask you to spend time with them and study. Do so to increase your relationship and your knowledge stat.

You can also read books to increase social stats. You can check out books from the school library, or you can buy them at the bookstore. On the description for each book, it will let you know which stat will be increased by finishing it. You can read books in the school library or occasionally on the train.

In Persona 5 Social Stats increase based on your actions and how you choose to spend your free time.

Unlike EXP which increases when fighting Shadows and exploring dungeons, these slowly increase one-by-one depending on which characters you interact with, or food or media you consume on your limited timetable, and in turn increase your effectiveness in battle.

While it’s usually possible to do more or less anything at any time, some activities can provide more benefit if done at particular times, so it’s important to understand how they work.

Why Social Stats are important in Persona 5

You’ll find that some of your Confidants and Social Links will require a particular level in one of your overworld stats to progress past Rank 5, and the Untouchables shop has some better gear for sale one you’ve got enough Guts to ask about it, so increasing the stats you need effectively will be important.

They’re not the only way to do it, but they’re consistent so if you need a little boost you can always rely on at least one being available at any given time.

Best ways to increase Knowledge, Guts, Proficiency, Kindness, Charm in Persona 5

Guts Increasing your Guts can be achieved by visiting Tae Takami and participating in her medical trials, by ordering coffee at the Shibuya Diner, or taking part in the Big Bang Burger Bar challenge after the 6th of May.

Charm

Charm can be increased by taking a bath in the bathhouse, and if you save that for a Monday or Thursday you’ll gain 3 points of charm instead of 2. The Shibuya Diner will start serving Frui-Tea when the heatwave hits in August, and that will earn you a point of Charm (in addition to two or three points of Knowledge).

Knowledge

Drinking coffee or Frui-Tea in Shibuya Diner earns two points, but if you do it on a rainy day you’ll earn three.

Proficiency

Taking the part time job at the Beef Bowl in Shibuya not only earns proficiency, but also pays reasonably well, or you can try your luck at the Batting Cages but there’s no guarantee you’ll get anything from that!

Kindness

Feeding the plant in your room with Bio Nutrients earns two points, and the more expensive Organic Nutrients earn three, but this can only be done once every couple of weeks so your best bet is to take the part time job at the Flower Shop in Shibuya Underground Mall which provides a reliable source.

Other ways to increase Knowledge, Guts, Proficiency, Kindness, Charm in Persona 5

Burgers

The Big Bang Burger Bar will occasionally offer a challenge that can earn you Guts, Knowledge, Charm, and Proficiency.

The lower your existing Guts score the less chance you have of success, but for the brave it’s a good source of a small boost to four of the five stats.

Books

Books are another good source to increase your stats. Stop by the school library or the book shops in Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Jimbocho and see what’s on offer.

The book’s description usually gives a hint about what stat it will boost, but remember you need to read the book twice in order for it to do you any good so they’re best left for times when you have nothing else to do such as commuting on the train, or slacking off in class once you’ve reached Temperance Rank 5.

Movies and Juice

You can get a stat boost from watching a movie or by drinking juice from the stand in Shibuya Underground Walkway on a Sunday; the affected stat changes each time so they’re less useful for building one in particular, but juice drinking doesn’t cause time to pass and the movies can be used to boost your Confidant Rank with Yosuke, Ryuji, Makoto, or Ann, so they’re worth bearing in mind.

Why increasing Social Stats in Persona 5 Royal is important

If you’re diligent about pursuing Social Links with each of your confidants, there will come a point at which you need a certain Social Stat to progress in their storyline. Sometimes you won’t be able to make a deal with a character at all before you don’t have the required stat.

Iwai, the owner of the Airsoft Shop for example, requires Dauntless Guts until you can start his Social Link, and by extension use the gun customisation feature. Diligent student council president Makoto won’t even look your way until you’ve got Scholarly Knowledge.

Reading and cleaning at Leblanc

Previously, it could take a time to fully develop your social stats due to a lot of options not being available each and every day. In Persona 5 Royal, you can work on your Social Stats even if Morgana doesn’t let you leave the house, thanks to more options to read and study at Leblanc after hours.

If you want to do Sojiro a favour, you can now look at the bathroom at the café and decide to help clean. This will go towards your Kindness and will make your guardian happy, which goes a long way to completing his Social Link.

Studying at the School Library

Until you beat Kaneshiro’s palace, studying at the school library will raise both Knowledge and Guts, but as people are whispering about you there, the gain in Guts comes at the cost of a Knowledge point. After that it’s back to just gaining Knowledge.

Spending time with your Confidants

You can also gain Social Stat points while you’re hanging out with one of your Confidants, something that was previously limited to a few characters only, such as Tae Takemi, the doctor at the clinic.

Playing video games

Because video games make you smart, you can now also boost Social Stats by playing games on your retro console. This is available after you beat Futaba’s palace and unlock Akihabara.

You can find the console at the second-hand shop in Yongen-Jaya, the retro game shop in Akihabara provides the games, each of which raises a different Social Stat.

Easier access to DVDs

The DVD rental also now charges you a one-time fee for the entire year instead of charging you late fees, which helps with getting the two settings in that are required to finish a film and actually get the points. Like with library books, there’s one new film per stat available each semester.

Guts

Guts can be a bit tricky to raise as the only consistently available method are books, DVDs and games.

Until you beat it, you can take the Big Bang Burger Challenge, each visit with Takemi at the clinic will net you Guts for participating in her shady trial.

If you eat the surprise sando at the Diner while studying, your Guts and Knowledge both rise.

Charm

Charm can be increased by taking a bath in the bathhouse, and if you save that for a Monday or Thursday you’ll gain 3 points of Charm instead of 2. The Shibuya Diner will start serving Frui-Tea when the heatwave hits in August, and that will earn you a point of Charm (in addition to two or three points of Knowledge).

Meeting with Ohya at Crossroads makes you charming, and fans of Yusuke can kill two birds with one stone during the summer holidays: spend time with him when he comes to visit you at Leblanc, and you gain charm for partaking in sophisticated activities such as reading art books and watching documentaries together.

Knowledge

You can study at Leblanc in the evening. If the café still has customers, listen to their conversation once or twice to make them leave, then you get to have the booth all to yourself.

For Social Links, play shogi with Hifumi in Kanda for extra smarts.

Ahead of exams, one or two of your friends will likely ask you to study with them. If you meet up for such a study session, you get three Knowledge points and you’ll make your friends happy, too.

Proficiency

Spending time with Iwai at the Airsoft Shop during Social Links also raises Proficiency.

Kindness

Feeding the plant in your room with Bio Nutrients, available at the shop next to the cinema in Shibuya, earns one point, and the more expensive Organic Nutrients from the flower shop earn two, but this can only be done once every couple of weeks so your best bet is to take the part time job at the Flower Shop in Shibuya Underground Mall which provides a reliable source.

You also earn Kindness cleaning Leblanc for Sojiro, which you can do every evening after the customers leave, or by brewing coffee and making curry. Helping Sojiro out during his Social Link also makes you kinder.

The same is true for visiting Shinya at the arcade in Akihabara. However, this social link is only available after you finish the Mementos request ‘Winners never cheat’.

Eat the steak made with love at the diner while studying at the diner for extra Kindness.

Things to look out for to quickly increase Knowledge, Guts, Proficiency, Kindness, Charm in Persona 5 Royal

Here’s some other methods to increase social stats quickly:

Get new books

Per completed semester a new book unlocks at the book store in Shibuya. With each new Phantom Thief that joins your team, there is also a new book available at the school library.

Persona 5 Royal introduces a book on speed-reading which you can get in Shibuya after the summer holidays. It allows you to finish a book in one go that you would usually sit down twice with. As soon as you unlock Jimbocho, you can also get more books there, these are however a bit dry and take three attempts to finish.

You can read a book whenever you get a free seat on the train, when you slack off in class, or during any evening at Leblanc by looking at the stack of books on the counter by the pay phone.

Raise Social Stats at busy days at your part-time job

I’ve you’ve got a part-time job at the flower shop, the convenience store, the beef bowl shop or the Crossroads bar, you will now get texts on certain days when your help is sorely needed. Not only do you get more money on these days, P5R also now tests your skill for extra Social Stat points.

Previously, you only gained a little extra Kindness for picking the right bouquets at the flower shop an extra Charm for handling visitors at Crossroads, now you also get extra Charm for scanning barcodes the right way at the convenience store and extra proficiency for remembering orders at the beef bowl shop.

The hints are always in the text, as long as you don’t skip anything you can’t get this wrong.

Take the Big Bang Challenge

Big Bang Burger in Shibuya lets you take a challenge that can earn you Guts, Knowledge, Charm, and Proficiency if you win.

Participating costs 2000 yen.

The lower your existing Guts score the less chance you have of success, but should you succeed it’s a good source of a small boost to four of the five stats. If you lose, you will still earn Guts for having made the attempt.

Slack off in class

From the second rank of the Temperance arcana onwards, which you build with your teacher Kawakami, you sometimes get to slack off in class. You can read one of your books, make infiltration tools, sleep or simply follow the lecture.

Actually listening to your teacher nets you three Knowledge points, whereas for the other available activities, you gain the same amount of points as usual.

Drink juice or watch a movie with friends

Your social stats in Persona 5 play an important role in the experience, and in this guide will take you through how to increase Knowledge, Guts, Charm, Proficiency, and Kindness as quickly and efficiently as possible.

It’s important to note that social stats, while seemingly useless in Palaces and Mementos, are increasingly important in establishing social links, which leads to Confidants and new abilities.

You’ll find yourself ranking up naturally as you progress through the game, and things like romancing — which we cover here — dictates you reach a certain level and rank before progressing down the intimate relationship route.

Let’s take a look at each social stat, what it represents, why it’s important, and how you can increase it quickly.

Knowledge

Knowledge is, as you might expect, related to the general intelligence of the protagonist. The smarter and higher the Knowledge rank, the better and more positively NPCs will react towards you and perceive you.

How To Increase Knowledge

Primarily, you want to do things that relate to school and studying.

Things like reading — specifically those that focus on Knowledge — and studying in the Library will help boost this stat.

Attending school regularly, and helping others with their work will also help this stat increase quickly.

Finally, answering exam questions correctly will boost the Knowledge stat. View our exam results guide for all of the right answers.

Guts is an important stat as it can lead to a better arsenal. It will allow you to purchase weapons from Untouchable, and certain NPCs will also become approachable once you reach a certain Guts rank. For example, the teacher Sadayo can only be romanced once you have the Guts to call her. She is a teacher, after all!

So, essentially, Guts is how bold, brazen and courageous you are.

How To Increase Guts

As with all other stats, if you find a book related to Guts, reading the whole thing will boost your Guts rank. Establishing a relationship with Tae Takemi — as detailed in our romance guide — will also help raise the rank.

Guts will help improve your efficiency while studying, so the more you study and ignore noises and distractions, the more this rank will rise. Studying in the Shibuya cafe and drinking coffee is another way to boost it.

Finally, competing in and winning the Burger Joint eating contest in Shibuya will grant you some hefty Guts rank boost. This will also boost Proficiency.

Charm

How To Increase Charm

You can read Charm-specific books, and work in the flower shop to boost this rank.

Spending 500 Yen in the Leblanc Bathhouse will also grant a Charm boost, but be cautious of the time, as time advances when bathing at that location. You’ll get additional ranking experience if you visit on Mondays and Thursdays.

Finally, if you build a relationship with the politician, attending their events will grant you Charm, albeit not much. It’s still a fairly simple way to boost the rank, though.

Proficiency

Proficiency is a stat that will make you more efficient and creatively succinct, so it’s useful when crafting different infiltration tools.

How To Increase Proficiency

Reading and completing a proficiency-specific book will increase this stat, as will crafting infiltration tools. You’ll need Proficiency to craft, but the more you craft, the more your Proficiency rank is boosted.

Working in the Beef Bowl restaurant in Shibuya is another way, as is hitting the batting cage every now and then (just make sure you hit the ball!).

Kindness

Kindness is a nice blend between all social stats, and will allow you to open up different jobs and relationships with certain NPCs. Some NPCs won’t talk to you unless you have a benchmark Kindness rank.

How To Increase Kindness

Reading a Kindness-specific book — and completing it — will raise this rank. Certain NPCs will also grant a rank boost if you successfully complete a request for them. Some restaurants will offer customer service jobs, and being a face-to-face task, you can boost the Kindness rank. Leblanc is probably your easiest bet for that.
