How to Add Datapacks to Your Minecraft Server

Datapacks are a feature added to Minecraft in the 1.13 and later versions that allows the game to be altered in many ways, without using Mods or Plugins. Datapacks are a completely normal part of the «vanilla» Minecraft game now, and do not permanently alter the game’s code.

Datapacks are currently only available for the Java based version of Minecraft.

The Datapack system has been steadily improved since its addition in the 1.13 version of Minecraft, and many new things can be added now. These include things like:

Datapacks also include support for new «Functions», «Predicates», and «Tags». These are used by the game to control new content added by the Datapacks.

Functions can run commands, and be used for things similar to scripting in a way.

Predicates are used to trigger reactions, like receiving an advancement, or changing the loot a mob will drop (like a burning mob dropping cooked meat instead of raw meat).

Tags can be used to group items and blocks, and assign them properties. Tags are used frequently by Functions, to control what they affect.

The «Vanilla» Datapack

Minecraft in version 1.13+ automatically includes one Datapack called «vanilla», This is actually part of the normal game files, and should always be present. It contains the basic loot tables for the game, and all the basic advancements.

It’s possible to disable «vanilla» if you want (using the Datapack commands mentioned below), but without loot tables you don’t get any items or resources. If you chop a tree, you don’t get any wood, animals and monsters don’t drop anything, etc. It’s going to be a really boring crafting/building game without anything to craft or build with!

Installing Datapacks

On a dedicated Minecraft server, Datapacks are added inside the «world» folder. In world folders created in Minecraft version 1.13 or higher, the game will automatically create a datapack folder.

Simply upload Datapacks directly to this datapack folder. Datapacks will be automatically loaded the next time the server is started (if the Datapack is compatible and works correctly). There are also commands for reloading Datapacks while the server is still running. There is a section later on in this article.

Resource Packs & Datapacks

Some Datapacks are set up to require special resource packs, and the author of the Datapack should have instructions on where to download the resource pack required.

Datapack Basegame Versions

Datapacks will often list a specific version of Minecraft that they were made to work with, but that does not mean they won’t work with newer versions of Minecraft.

Depending on what a Datapack does, it may still work. You can always test the Datapack by adding it to a server, and see if it loads and works.

Where to Find Datapacks

Datapacks are a relatively new feature to Minecraft, so there isn’t a centralized place to find them yet. But sites that normally only handled Mods or Plugins before, are beginning to add Datapack sections as well now.

On Curseforge (one of the biggest sites for mods and other things for Minecraft), the Datapacks are often included in the «Customization» tab.

Authors often include [DATAPACK] in the title or description.

Datapack Loading Order and Commands

Datapacks load in a specific order, and that order can possibly affect how they work. Changes added by one Datapack can be overwritten by others loaded later on. The author of a Datapack may specify what order their Datapack needs to be loaded in. The last Datapacks loaded actually have higher priority then ones loaded first.

There are a series of commands for controlling the activation or loading order of Datapacks. These commands can be entered in the light grey bar at the bottom of the «Console» tab of the Nodecraft control panel, or in the in-game chat.

There are many great ways to further customize your Minecraft gameplay. One of the easiest ways to customize your server is with the use of datapacks. You can use datapacks to add new advancements, functions, loot tables, structures, and more. This is a great alternative to adding mods/plugins onto your server as it does not require installation client-side or for you to change your server version from Vanilla Minecraft. Keep in mind that they are only made for Java Edition and not Bedrock Edition. Datapacks can be added to your Minecraft server easily and we will walk you through each step of the process.

The datapack command was added after 1.13, so these are not relevant for any versions under 1.13.

Common Issues

Datapack doesn’t show in the server
The datapack not showing is generally from the file not being uploaded to the correct directory. Enter your world folder, than datapacks folder to ensure that the datapack is properly uploaded. Also, make sure that you did not unzip the pack. If you check both of these and still are experiencing issues, make sure that the datapack is made for the same version of Minecraft that your server is running.

What are Minecraft Data Packs?

If you navigate to the Data Packs section of Planet Minecraft, you can sort by these categories as well as specific topics such as Magic, Farming and Tools, Technology, and more! There are over 4,000 Data Packs on Planet Minecraft!

1. Click the «↓ Download» button.

2. A window will pop up. For this specific project, the creator decided to use MediaFire as the third party site to host their download. Click «Continue».

4. A Window will pop up. Make sure «Save» is selected. Click «OK». Your file will start downloading.

5. Once your file is downloaded, you’ll need to locate it. There are several ways to do this but we’re using this method:

Navigate to your desktop and locate your search bar, which is typically in the lower left-hand corner of your taskbar/screen. You may have to click an icon (such as the windows logo) before you find the search bar. Type «Downloads». Your Downloads folder will pop up. Click it.

7. Open up Minecraft! Make sure the version of Minecraft matches the version that the Data Pack was made for. Select «Single Player».

11. Here, you will be directed to your World Folder. Navigate to «data packs». Copy your data pack on your Desktop and paste it into your data packs folder.

14. This step will be different depending on your world settings.
*Cheats will need to be enabled for data packs to load, so if you’re creating a new Survival or Creative, make sure the «Allow Cheats: ON» is selected when you’re setting it up.*

Type /reload. Your data pack will load! You can verify by typing /datapack list enabled.

14a. On your Game Menu, select «Open to LAN». Then, click the button on the right that says «Allow Cheats: OFF». This should change to «ON». Now, select «Start LAN World».

14b. This will bring you back to Minecraft. type /reload. You’ll see the data pack information pop up after it’s loaded. You can verify by typing /datapack list enabled.

How to install Minecraft Data Packs

This is a simple tutorial on how to install Minecraft Data Packs. Datapacks, introduced in Minecraft 1.13, are a kind of addon for Minecraft: they change the gameplay. You can create mods or command block creations using them.

Install your datapack

Well, you downloaded a really cool data pack like my Self Building House, but how do you install it?
Here’s how to install Minecraft Data Packs for Minecraft Java. They work from version 1.13 and above.

Total Time: 5 minutes

You can find them on the internet or on my website.

Open Minecraft and choose a world.

The data pack will work only in the worlds where you add it.

Click on “Edit”, then “Open world folder”.

You will be brought to the world file location, which is usually in %appdata%/.minecraft/saves

Open “datapacks”

Open the folder called “datapacks”.

Move the datapack into the folder and you’re done!
You may need to use the command /reload, or open and close Minecraft.

To check if you have correctly installed the data pack you can run the command:

And if it’s in the list, you’re good to go!

Also, remember to always check the Minecraft version the data pack was made for. I’m sure you’ll find it in the creator’s website.

Minecraft: How to install a datapack

First download your favorite datapack to your PC. You can get datapacks e.g. at the following sites:

Make sure that you select the correct Minecraft version for the datapacks. The datapacks are only needed on the server.

If you have all datapacks as zip-files together, you can upload them to your server. Open your FTP program and connect to your server. Here is a tutorial on how to use the FTP-connection.

Now go to your world folder (this is the folder with the same name as your world name) and there you will find a “datapacks” folder:

Open this folder and add your datapacks as a zip via drag & drop. Restart your server and you can use your new datapacks.
