But, to make it simple, a Hitsound is a sound clip that plays every time you hit another player with any weapon, be it Melee, Projectile or hitscan. The default sound clip sounds like this.
There is also a KillSound, which acts similarly to the hitsound, but will only play when you deliver the finishing blow. The default KillSound sounds like this.
Valve left a few scripts in the game which allow users to change the sound that plays. How do we change them? we’ll come to that, just you wait. But first, we need to turn HitSounds on.
Firstly, start up TF2. When you get to the main menu, you will want to click Adv. Options located at the bottom-right of your screen. (It may be in a different place if you have a custom HUD installed.)
When you click on that, you will be met with a long list of options. We’re interested with the ones at the top.
And that’s how we get HitSounds working! Now, we just need to make some custom sounds.
There are places where you can find hitsounds created and uploaded by other people. A simple google search should find you something that you might want to use. There was a link to a website that acted as a directory for user-uploaded sounds, but it has since been taken down.
These sounds will be installed in the «custom» folder in your TF2 directory. To get there on Windows, you’ll need to Head to:

If the «custom» folder does not exist in the tf folder, you can make one yourself, and call it «custom». The file names mentioned in the scripts that allow us to change hitsounds can be case-senstive, so don’t use capital letters unless you’re told to!
After this, we’ll need to create three more folders. First, create a folder inside the custom folder, call it «my_custom_stuff». Inside the «my_custom_stuff» folder, create another folder, called «sound», and in the «sound» folder, create a final folder named «ui».
Now that you have the folders in place, you can install the sounds. Place your hitsound file inside the «ui» folder, and rename the file to «hitsound» (no capitals!). Do the same for your Killsound file, calling it «killsound».
In the end, you should have something like this:
After that, you’re done! Make sure to load up an offline practice with some bots to test and make sure you did everything correctly.

-Go through everything you’ve done, making sure your sound files meet the requirements, making sure that your files are in the correct place and are correctly named, with no spelling errors. if you get stuck, compare with the screencaps provided
-The error occurs when the game detects files that are not in the correct place. this means your file directory has a problem. again, compare with provided screencaps.
-Firstly, check advanced options to see if you’ve actually turned hitsounds on. If they are, then your files are either an incompatible format, or too large. Remember, most files over 300KB in size Do Not Work.
-Nothing I can do about that. You’ll have to find a way to increase the volume yourself, or find a sound that’s louder.
-It was either something already covered here, or so incredibly stupid or unhelpful that it made me lose faith in humanity. Next time, either use common sense, or just don’t post at all.
I’ve clicked on those links and checked the URLs. they work perfectly fine. this is something on your end, and not my problem.
Well, that was fun! I made this guide because I couldn’t find any decent ones on the guide section of TF2, so I thought I’d go ahead and make one myself! It took me a few hours to get everything together, but it was fun!

Первое что мы сделаем это запустим Тф2.
Затем зайдём в дополнительные настройки и поставим killsound и hitsound на default.
Далее мы должны зайти в файлы ТээФки.
Путь(Если у вас на диске C:): C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf
Создаём в папке tf другую папку «custom» но только если её у вас нету, в custom создаём папку my_custom_stuff, в этой папке создаём ещё одну папку sound, и наконец в папке sound создаём папку ui, а в эту ui надо будет вставлять аудиофайлы.
Ищем звук который вам понравился и скачиваем его в формате mp3.
Так как Валв выбрали именно этот формат для этой цели, mp3 надо будет конвертировать в waw.
Кстати файл должен быть коротким, примерно одну секунду, желательно поменьше, и чтоб он весил не более 300Кб.
И так, вы сделали всё что надо, осталось лишь зайти в игру, перепроверить настройки (Забыл сказать что уровень pitch должен быть чуть ниже среднего чтоб звук вообще был слышен) и проверить работают ли звуки.
Если всё получилось то поздравляю!
Если же нет, то постарайтесь пересмотреть все вышеуказанные действия и всё ли вы сделали правильно. У меня тоже с первого раза не получилось, но я просто забыл в настройках поставить звук на правильном регистре.

2. To avoid having an awkward pause between you actually hitting someone and the sound playing, we’ll remove the little bit of silence at the beginning. Simply left-click where you want the trimmed area to start, hold, and drag the pointer until you cover everything you want to remove, and release. Then press your Delete key. Easy-peasy!
Our MP3 file’s current bitrate is 48000 Hz. The game, however, prefers the files to be 44100 Hz in WAV format. The bitrate can be changed easily by clicking the dropdown menu and selecting the correct option.
4. Make any other changes you may want, such as changing speed or pitch.
6. The file is ready for packaging now! If you’d like to make sure the bitrate is correct, launch Audacity again and open your file. The bitrate shown in the corner should be 44100 Hz. If you have any other files to edit, feel free to do it now.
IF YOU DO NOT MAKE SURE THE BITRATE IS CORRECT THE SOUNDS WON’T WORK.
1. Create a new «root» folder on your desktop with a descriptive name. This will be the name of the finished VPK file later.
2. Place your custom sound(s) inside ui. Rename your killsound so it is now named killsound and your hitsound to hitsound (duh!). You should end up with this.
3. Navigate to your Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\bin folder and locate an executable named vpk.exe. This is the VPK creator program we’ll use.
Leave the explorer window open (and not maximized!) so you can see both your desktop and the bin folder at the same time.
4. Drag-and-drop the folder on your desktop that contains your files into vpk.exe.
A command prompt window will show up for a moment and close automatically. Then, the finished VPK will be placed on your desktop. Repeat if necessary. Packaging done!
5. If you wanna make sure the file structure inside the VPK is correct, open the file with GFCScape. It should look like this.
If you’d like to unpack the file, right-click the «root» folder and select «Extract».
1. This is easy. Navigate to Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf\custom. If the custom folder happens to be missing, just create it.
2. Place your VPK file in there, like so.
And that’s it! Hopefully it’ll work as intended. If it doesn’t, make sure you gave sounds the correct bitrate, the sounds are enabled in your advanced settings, and verify your game cache if you must.
