What are Texture Packs?

Are Texture Packs the same thing as Minecraft Resource Packs?

For this tutorial, we’re using Ignaf’s Quadral Texture Pack. We love the vibrancy of this pack, and it’s resolution stays true to Vanilla, which we really like too.

1. Click «↓ Download Texture Pack».

2. A window will pop up. Make sure you have «Save File» selected, and then click «OK».

3. Open up Minecraft and click on «Options. «

4. Click «Resource Packs. «

7. Close both windows. You won’t see your pack available yet; click «Done».

9. You should see your texture pack over in the left hand column. Hover, and click on the triangle/arrow pointing to the right.

If your pack does not show up, try extracting the folder and adding that folder to resourcepacks.

To unzip: Right click on the zipped file and select «Extract all». A window will pop up showing you your extracted file. Drag and drop that file onto your desktop. THIS is the folder you will put into your resourcepacks folder. Refer to step 6.

10. Your pack should now be in the right hand column. Click «Done»

11. Your pack will be loaded, and you’ll see the change in the next menu. Click «Done» on that menu.

If you like «Minecraft,» but are getting tired of the game, you might want to check out mods.

Mods, short for «modifications,» are pieces of software that can change how «Minecraft» works. Some mods alter the rules of the time-space continuum. Some can change enemies into immensely powerful zombies. Combine a few mods, like introducing flags and custom weapons, and you can transform your game into a heated match of Capture the Flag with friends.

There are also resource packs (also known as texture packs), which change textures — the visual designs of every item in the game. These are great for making the game look different, but keeping the same gameplay.

Just note that mods and resource packs only work with the «Java Edition» of «Minecraft,» available for Mac, Windows, and Linux computers.

How to install ‘Minecraft’ mods

To use mods in Minecraft, you need to install Minecraft Forge, find the mods you want online, add your mods to «Minecraft,» and troubleshoot any problems that may arise. Here’s how to do it all.

Install Minecraft Forge

Before you can install «Minecraft» mods, you’ll need to install a free app called Minecraft Forge. Forge is a third-party program that lets you manage, install, enable, and delete any mod.

You can download Minecraft Forge from the official website. Try to download the «Recommended» version, and make sure that the number in the left sidebar corresponds with the version of «Minecraft» that you have.

After you’ve downloaded and installed Forge, restart your computer, and open the Minecraft Launcher. You should see a new options menu — pick «Forge» from this menu and then press «Play.»

This will launch «Minecraft» with Forge enabled. If you’ve done it right, you’ll see a new menu titled «Mods» in the main menu.

Find the ‘Minecraft’ mods that you want

There are dozens of sites that offer «Minecraft» mods for free. Two of the most popular are minecraftmods.com and curseforge.com. If you can’t find the mods you want there, you can always try searching for them on Google.

However, whatever source you use, do some research. Like all third-party downloads, you’ll want to dig a little to be sure the mod download is safe and won’t cripple your game with bugs — or do worse, like install malware.

Also make sure that any mod you download is compatible with the specific version of «Minecraft» that you’re running.

Both these sites have search features and comment sections, which let users report any issues they’ve had from a mod download.

Curseforge also lets you sort by and opt for mods that already have millions of downloads.

Add your mod to ‘Minecraft’

To see your mod in action, download the mod file you want, and then place it in a folder created by Forge called «mods.» If you can’t find this folder, save your downloaded mod file anywhere else that you can find it.

Troubleshooting

If «Minecraft» has an issue loading after one or more mods are installed, don’t freak out. Bugs and other problems will come with the territory, and usually for simple reasons.

Make sure that you copied over the right files, and that the mod you downloaded can work with your version of «Minecraft.»

«Minecraft» will show you an error log if it fails to load, which you can inspect to find which mod is causing the game to crash. Once you’ve found it, open the mods folder and remove the culprit mod, then restart and launch again.

How to install ‘Minecraft’ resource packs

You can also install resource packs to mix up your Minecraft universe. They won’t alter gameplay, but can change how blocks and buildings look, as well as add fun cosmetics, unique sounds, and alternative languages to the game.

You can find resource packs at familiar sources like curseforge.com, or other sites, like resourcepack.net. Here’s how to install one in your game:

Select «Open Pack Folder» and copy-and-paste or drag-and-drop the zip file into the folder. If you don’t see the resource pack listed right away under «Available,» go ahead and restart «Minecraft.» It should appear.

Move the resource pack from «Available» to «Selected.»

How to turn resource packs on and off while playing

If you start playing and find the new resource pack distracting, or if you want to compare the altered textures to the originals, you can turn your resource packs on and off while playing.

How to Install Datapacks on Your Minecraft Server

What are datapacks?
Datapacks provide the player a method of further customizing their Minecraft experience on a vanilla server without having to upload any mods or plugins.

The first step is to find a suitable datapack for you. You can find multiple different datapacks on a website called VanillaTweaks.

Once you have selected your datapack, click on “Download”.

Next, go to Scalacube.com and log in to your control panel.

Click on «Servers» and click on «Manage server».

Click «Manage» again.

Find the “File Manager” on the left tab and enter it.

Locate your “world” folder and enter it.

Locate the “datapacks” folder and enter it.

Click on «Upload» at the top right, select your datapack and click «Upload».

Once this is done, go back and reboot your server by clicking on the button labeled «Reboot» and wait for the process to finish.

The datapack has been uploaded and will be waiting for you once you enter your server.
By entering /datapack in the console, you can view all the datapacks your server currently has.
If the datapack is not functional, go back and make sure that you uploaded it into the correct folder and that it contains all the correct files required.

There are thousands of Minecraft resource packs to choose from, bringing almost limitless features. Here’s how to add resource packs to Minecraft Java and Bedrock editions.

Instructions in this article apply to Minecraft for Windows and Mac.

What Are Minecraft Resource Packs?

Similar to Minecraft mods, resource packs change certain in-game features. Some examples include:

Where to Find Minecraft Resource Packs

Resource packs are made by Minecraft fans who want to share them with other players. You can find resource packs via a quick Google search, or from fan sites like ResourcePacks.net, MinecraftTexturePacks, and CurseForge.

Resource packs were called texture packs in older versions of Minecraft. You can add older texture packs only if they match the edition of Minecraft you are playing.

Which Edition of Minecraft Are You Playing?

The process for adding resource packs is different depending on the edition. Your resource pack must match the edition and version of Minecraft you’re playing.

There are two major editions of Minecraft: Java and Bedrock. If you are playing with Java, the words Java Edition will appear on the Minecraft menu screen. If there is no information about the edition, then you’re playing Bedrock. There are also different versions within each edition.

How to Install Resource Packs to Minecraft Java Edtion

Once you’ve found a resource pack matching the edition and version of the Minecraft game you have, you can add it to your game.

Download the resource pack to your computer. The resource pack will download to your computer as a ZIP file.

Within the Minecraft menu screen, go to Options > Resource Packs.

Drag the expanded file you downloaded from your computer over to the Available Resource Packs file area within Minecraft.

The new resource pack should appear in the menu. Select Open Resource Pack Folder to activate the pack.

If the resource pack doesn’t appear, close the Resource Packs menu and reopen it to refresh the Available Resource Packs.

Your Minecraft world will now reflect the new resource. For example, this is how Minecraft looks after the OCD pack is installed.

Many Minecraft resource packs that change the graphics require you to install the Optifine mod.

How to Switch Between Minecraft Versions

If you’re playing the Java edition, you can switch between previous Minecraft versions. That way, you can take advantage of older resource packs.

Open the Minecraft Launcher and select Installations.

Select New to create a new Minecraft installation.

Select the Version drop-down menu.

Select the version of Minecraft you want to play.

Select Create.

You can now install resource packs using the steps outlined above. Select this new installation anytime you want to play a different version of Minecraft.

How to Add a Resource Pack to Minecraft Bedrock Edtion

Follow the steps below to install and activate resource packs for Minecraft Bedrock edition.

Download the resource pack and open the .mcpack file. It will automatically import itself into Minecraft.

Open Minecraft (if it doesn’t open automatically) and select Settings.

If you only want to apply resource packs to one of your worlds (as opposed to all of them), skip to step 8.

Select Global Resources in the left pane.

Select My Packs.

Select the resource pack you want to enable.

Select Activate.

The pack will now appear under the Active tab. The resource packs will be applied to all of your Minecraft worlds.

Resource packs that are higher up in the list take precedence over those below them.

If you want to activate additional resource packs for one of your worlds (or if you only want to apply resource packs to a specific world), select Play on the main menu.

Select the pencil icon beside your world.

Select Resource Packs in the left pane.

Select My Packs.

Select the resource pack you want to enable.

Select Activate.

The pack will appear under the Active tab and will be applied to your world.

The Controversy Over Minecraft X-Ray Resource Packs

Minecraft X-ray packs are unique because they’re not specifically designed to enhance the visuals or sounds. Instead, they are used to help players find diamonds and other valuable blocks. X-ray packs make common blocks like dirt and stone transparent so that players can see where the valuables are hiding.

By making blocks see-through, X-ray packs also make it possible for players to spot monsters and other players. Some players believe using X-ray packs in this way is an unfair strategy. As a result, many servers have banned X-ray resource packs in an attempt to level the playing field.

While it’s difficult to tell if a player is using X-ray packs, a server’s save logs can detect if a player is using any modifications by tracking mining patterns. Through these patterns and indicators, players who use X-ray packs can be identified and banned from the game.

This series of tutorials will teach you how to create your very own data packs, assuming you know absolutely nothing about commands. Although data packs could just contain files that replace built-in assets like resource packs, these posts will focus on adding new features and mechanics to the game. In every part I assume you’ve read the previous parts.

This post flies through the first five blog posts at an incredibly high speed. If you know your way around computers, JSON, common minecraft commands and want to learn by example, this post is for you. If you prefer a more guided tutorial or get curious about the detailed reasoning behind these instructions, refer to the individual parts, starting here.

Let’s get started with a datapack that allows us to quickly switch between creative and spectator!

But first, what are functions, tags and data packs?

By typing a command in chat, you’re giving minecraft direct instructions to do something for you. Functions are files that consist of a bunch of commands. Tags are groups that can consist of functions, blocks, entities, items and fluids. They are represented by files and any datapack can extend a tag defined elsewhere. Data packs are bundles of functions, but also loot tables, recipes and structures. Players can simply drop a data pack into their world and start using it, they won’t have to mess with the individual files within the data pack.

Data packs are not mods or plug-ins. They are a bit easier to create, but are more limited.

Getting an editor and showing the logs

Download Notepad++, which is an editor that gives suggestions based on previously typed words. Very useful for referencing things you’ve created earlier by name in later tutorials. In the Minecraft Launcher, click Settings and tick the checkbox that says «Open output log when Minecraft: Java Edition starts». If you now launch the game, you see a second window that will list errors in function files which helps during debugging (the process of fixing bugs). Those are the same errors you would otherwise see in chat if you were to type in a broken command like «/gamemode epic».

Creating a data pack

Open the datapacks folder of a world by using the Minecraft client (Edit > Open World Folder > datapacks folder) or navigate to %APPDATA%/.minecraft/saves/ /datapacks. Create a new folder and call it «Creative Utilities». Go inside the folder and create a pack.mcmeta file.

Now run the /reload command in your minecraft world followed by /datapack list. Your first datapack should show up, hover over the entry of the data pack to see the description you specified. The description can be any Minecraft JSON text component and visit this page for the latest pack_format number.

During this tutorial we’ll look at multiple other JSON files with references to wiki pages. These external pages use icons to indicate the JSON type, use this page for information on the meaning behind these icons.

Creating your first function

Create a folder named «data» and create another folder inside. It’s name should be something you own, like your username. The folder represents your namespace and should be globally unique, which is only possible by using a name you own. Note that you must replace » » with the name of this folder in any of the snippets below.

Create a folder named «functions» inside that, with another folder inside. This last folder should be used to uniquely identify your functions across all data packs created by you. An abbreviation of the data pack name should be enough, so call it «crea-util». Now create a toggle-gamemode.mcfunction file with the following contents:

.minecraft/saves/ /datapacks/Creative Utilities/data/ /functions/crea-util/toggle-gamemode.mcfunction

At the first line, the player is given a tag if in spectator mode. If we were to change the gamemode immediately, it would be changed back right away on the second line. The second and third lines swap gamemodes and the fourth line cleans up the mess we made on the first line.

Now run /reload followed by /function :crea-util/toggle-gamemode. As long as you were in creative or spectator, it should have toggled your gamemode.

Hooking into Minecraft

There are two built-in tags: minecraft:load and minecraft:tick. By registering our function into those tags, we can have minecraft automatically run our commands instead of making the players type /function commands. The functions inside the minecraft:tick tag run 20 times a second.

Go back to the data folder. Alongside your namespace folder, create a new folder named «minecraft». Create a folder named «tags» inside that, with another folder named «functions» inside. Now create a load.json file:

> The file names match the minecraft:load and minecraft:tick tags. The listed values inside match function files we still have to create. The exact JSON structure can be found here. Go back to the data folder again and into your /functions/crea-util folder. Create a new load.mcfunction file with these contents: tellraw @a <"text":"Hello World!","color":"yellow","extra":[<"text":"\nThe Creative Utilities datapack is created by ","color":"aqua">,<"text":"\n Run /function :crea-util/uninstall to uninstall.","color":"gray">]>
Usually you use the load function to setup your datapack. The tellraw command uses JSON to describe text, see this page for the full text component structure. Then create another file named tick.mcfunction with these contents:

Lastly, create a uninstall.mcfunction file with the following contents:

datapack disable «file/Creative Utilities.zip» Although uninstall functions aren’t an official thing, I recommend creating them to clean up any mess your datapack made in the load function. If you do provide an uninstall function, make sure to tell the players on load that they should use a /function command to do an uninstall before removing the data pack.

Challenge Yourself

If you followed this tutorial without looking at the file contents, you probably have no idea what the commands do or why it works. Don’t worry though, that’s the nature of a quickstart guide. If you know a little about commands, maybe you can try adding extra features to the datapack. Regardless, try to understand what everything in the data pack means. Play around and see how modifications affect its behaviour. Maybe even search for information on parts you don’t understand.
