install command (winget)

The install command of the winget tool installs the specified application. Use the search command to identify the application you want to install.

The install command requires that you specify the exact string to install. If there is any ambiguity, you will be prompted to further filter the install command to an exact application.

Usage

winget install [[-q] \ ] [\ ]

Arguments

The following arguments are available.

The query argument is positional. Wild-card style syntax is not supported. This is most often the string of characters you expect to uniquely identify the package you wish to install.

Options

The options allow you to customize the install experience to meet your needs.

Example queries

The following example installs a specific version of an application.

The following example installs an application from its ID.

The following example installs an application by version and ID.

Multiple selections

If the query provided to winget does not result in a single application, then winget will display the results of the search. This will provide you with the additional data necessary to refine the search for a correct install.

The best way to limit the selection to one file is to use the id of the application combined with the exact query option. For example:

If multiple sources are configured, it is possible to have duplicate entries. Specifying a source is required to further disambiguate.

The msstore source uses unique identifiers as the «Id» for packages. These do not require the exact query toption. For example:

Local install

The manifest option enables you to install an application by passing in a YAML file directly to the client. If the manifest is a multi-file manifest, the directory containing the files must be used. The manifest option has the following usage.

Log files

The log files for winget unless redirected, will be located in the following folder: %temp%\AICLI\*.log

License Agreements

Some applications when installed will require the user to agree to the license or other agreements before installing. When this occurs, the Windows Package Manager will prompt the user to agree to the agreements. If the user does not agree, the application will not install.

From the command line, you can auto accept the agreements by passing the following option —accept-package-agreements on the command line. This can be beneficial when scripting the Windows Package Manager.

Разработчики Windows уже давно с завистью смотрят на избыток менеджеров пакетов в Linux. Наличие простого инструмента командной строки, такого как apt или rpm, который установит приложение и все его необходимые компоненты, упрощает установку цепочки инструментов. В правой части страницы нажмите «Получить«

Далее подтвердите, что подтверждаете открытие данного приложения через Microsoft Store

Если у вас выскакивает ошибка при скачивании Microsoft App Installer, то нужно посмотреть причину в подробных сведениях. Если проблем нет, то Microsoft App Installer установится без проблем.

В итоге Microsoft App Installer жалуется, что центр обновления Windows отключен.

Установка менеджера пакета WinGet через GitHub и PowerShell

Как я и писал выше весь открытый код Winget выложен на портале GitHub. Суть установки WinGet заключается в том, что необходимо скачать и установить appxbundle пакет. Для этого перейдите по ссылке, где есть список всех релизов и версий:

На момент написания статьи актуальной версией является Windows Package Manager v1.0.11451. Снизу вы увидите список доступных файлов, Microsoft.DesktopAppInstaller_8wekyb3d8bbwe.appxbundle это и есть сам пакет с утилитой WinGet.

Далее вы просто щелкаете по данному пакету и устанавливаете его. Вас уведомят, хотите ли вы обновить установщик приложений, ответьте да.

Начнется процесс обновления. Дожидаемся окончания и можем использовать WinGet.

Давайте я покажу, как с помощью PowerShell можно скачать данный пакет и установить его. Откройте PowerShell от имени администратора и введите:

Первая команда начинает скачивание пакета Microsoft.DesktopAppInstaller_8wekyb3d8bbwe.appxbundle, убедитесь, что у вас создана папка для загрузки.

Далее команда распаковывает пакет и добавляет утилиту WinGet.

На этом установка менеджера пакетов WinGet Windows Package Manager завершена.

Перед тем, как мы разберем установку программ через менеджер пакетов Windows я вам покажу основные ключи, которые будут фигурировать в командах. Запустите командную строку или powerShell, где введите:

Теперь вы можете начать использовать winget для установки огромного количества программ, сильно ускорив этот процесс, а дальше я покажу, как это еще и автоматизировать скриптами.

На выходе вы получите список содержащий: имя, ID и версию установленного пакета.

Обратите внимание, что тут будут перечислены все приложения, которые вы видите и в оснастке «Программы и компоненты«, для примера я вывел отдельной командой этот же список для сравнения.

В результате вы получите все пакеты с ключевым словом «Google». Мне интересен Google Chrome и его версия Canary.

Обратите внимание, что можно использовать как имя пакета, так и его ID. Полезной информации будет много.

Начнется подключение к репозиторию Microsoft и скачивание пакета Google Chrome.

После чего появится окно с установкой Google Chrome

Дожидаемся окончания установки. Проверяем, что приложение появилось в списке.

Как видите все успешно отработало и в списке приложений все появилось.

Проверим наши приложения в меню пуск.

Бывает, так что некоторые пакеты не могут быть экспортируемы и будут писать «Установленный пакет недоступен из любого источника».

Как использовать winget в скриптах

Логично представить, что если это утилита командной строки или PowerShell, то можно написать скрипт, который вы сами будите запускать на чистой системе или через автозапуск Windows, вам главное чтобы без вашего участия был установлен весь набор софта. для корпоративных компьютеров, это вообще отличное решение, так как установка программ через GPO не всегда возможна, а SCCM есть не у всех.

For a long time, people have been asking for a package manager on Windows. Today at Microsoft Build, Microsoft announced the preview of the Windows Package Manager called WinGet. A package manager can help you to save time and quickly install software and tools on to your machine. Developers and IT Pros have wanted a native package manager in Windows for a long time and with WinGet, you will get that.

How to install WinGet Windows Package Manager

The Windows Package Manager is currently in preview. To install the preview of Windows Package Manager, you basically have two options. Since WinGet is open source, you can clone, build, run, and test the code from the GitHub repository (https://github.com/microsoft/winget-cli). You can also become a Windows Insider an join the Windows Package Manager Insider program by sending your Microsoft Account (MSA) to [email protected] and request to be included in the preview.

App Installer in the Windows Store

After you have joined either Insider program, head over to the Microsoft Store and get the App Installer. The Windows Package manager will be available after you get the update.

How to install software using the Windows Package Manager

Now you can start using winget in the Windows Terminal, Windows command line, or PowerShell. The command line client “winget.exe” is already pre-configured to point to the Microsoft community repository.

No powershell commands for this?

Is it possible to run install winget on Windows Server 2019?

But currently, the preview is distributed over the store, which is not available on the Server. However, you could build it yourself from GitHub.

I dont think i done everything right. Installed from command line. When i search for packages, only a few come upp. And i cant install any of them. I would like if people did like, this is the exact command: winget search apllication nl winget show application, for example, you did a really good job the best one i seen so far in explaining. One error i get is AWS serverless application, and that dont sound good. I think i unistalled something when i backed my cunouter the other day. Had to unistall repair and install some programs just to be safe. Or mayby cleaner app wiped some important stuff. Thanks for this. And the jason file is written as normal text, i dont know how to do that, i only know if i see the code then looking at your. Cuz im new to changing files for settings but its awsome 🙂 I know im noob.

Where winget install apps? Trying to finish the GraphViz setup, adding the installation path to PATH variable, but can’t find where WinGet installed it.

Источник msstore использует уникальные идентификаторы в качестве значения Id для пакетов. Для них не требуется параметр запроса exact. Например:

Локальная установка

Параметр manifest позволяет установить приложение, передавая YAML-файл непосредственно клиенту. Если манифест содержит несколько файлов, необходимо использовать каталог, содержащий эти файлы. Параметр manifest используется следующим образом.

Если файлы журналов для winget не перенаправлены, они будут находиться в следующей папке: %temp%\AICLI\*.log

Лицензионные соглашения

Некоторые приложения в начале установке потребуют от пользователя принять условия лицензии или других соглашений, прежде чем установка будет продолжена. In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to install and manage applications on your Windows system with Winget.

Prerequisites

This tutorial will be a hands-on demonstration. If you’d like to follow along, be sure you have a Windows 10 system. This tutorial uses Windows 10 21h2 19044, but other versions (Windows 10 1709 (build 16299)) or later will also work.

Installing Winget on Windows

Winget is a powerful command-line package manager for Windows. Like apt on Ubuntu, yum on Fedora, and Homebrew on macOS, Winget allows you to search for, install, and uninstall packages from a command-line environment.

But before you can use Winget, you first need to check if Winget is already installed on your Windows system.

Open PowerShell as administrator, and run the winget command below to check if Winget is already installed on your system.

If you get an error saying Winget is not recognized as a cmdlet, as shown below, you’ll first have to install it.

Installing via the Microsoft Store

This tutorial covers installing Winget via Microsoft Store and GitHub releases. But if you want a quick way to install Winget, the Microsoft Store is the way to go. Since Winget is a Windows Package Manager, you can just search for it in the Microsoft Store.

1. Open the Microsoft Store.

2. Search for winget at the search bar, and choose App Installer from the list, as shown below.

3. Now, click on Get in the left panel to install Winget.

Microsoft Store downloads and installs the core Winget package and dependencies to your machine, which may take a few minutes to complete.

Once the installation completes, you’ll see the following screen.

4. Finally, run the winget command to check Winget’s installed version. The version installed is Windows Package Manager v1.2.10941, as shown below, but yours might be different.

This tutorial uses PowerShell 7+ for running winget commands.

Installing via GitHub Releases

If you want more control over the installation process, you can download and install Winget manually from GitHub. With this method, you’ll get the latest version of Winget.

1. Navigate the Winget’s releases page on GitHub.

If you have an older version of Winget installed, click on the Update button to update Winget to the latest version.

The update process will take a few minutes to complete.

Below, you can see the Winget’s version installed is v1.3.1391-preview, which is a preview release as of this writing.

Installing and Uninstalling Software Using Winget

Winget is installed, so it’s time to test it by running winget commands, and you’ll need a software package to install.

Don’t have one at the moment? No worries! Windows Package Manager has a comprehensive list of packages available, and Winget lets you search through that list.

1. Run the following winget command to search for your desired software to install, VLC for this example.

Type Y and press Enter when prompted, as shown below. As you can see, there are multiple related results, where you can see each software’s Name, ID, Version, and the Source of the software.

Take note of the ID (VideoLAN.VLC) of the software you want to install.

2. Next, run the following command to install your target software, in this case, VLC.

The command below takes one parameter: the ID of the software (VideoLAN.VLC) you noted in step one. The unique ID helps avoid ambiguity so you can install the correct software.

In some cases, if there is any ambiguity. You will be prompted to select the correct software you want to install

Perhaps you plan to install multiple software at once. If so, pass in multiple IDs as parameters in the winget install command separated by a semicolon (;), as shown below: winget install VideoLAN.VLC; Streamlink.Streamlink

3. Lastly, run the following command to uninstall a software (VideoLAN.VLC) you’re not planning to use anymore.

Updating Existing Software with Winget

Software gets updated frequently, and it’s always a good idea to keep your software up to date. Luckily, Winget allows you to update your software using the winget upgrade command. But first, you must find the list of outdated software in your system.

Run the winget upgrade command below to see the list of available software updates.

Note the ID of the software you’d like to update.

Now, run the same winget upgrade command below. But this time, append the ID ( Docker.DockerDesktop ) of the software to uninstall.

Perhaps you want to update all your software at once. If so, pass the –all parameter to the winget upgrade, as shown below. This command is truly a lifesaver if you have the time to wait until all the updates are complete. winget upgrade –all

Managing Software Repositories

Winget fetches its software from a central repository, and taking a look at the repositories now and then is crucial to ensure everything is in order.

Winget gets its software from two repositories:

The first step in managing software repositories is checking which repositories are available:

1. Run the below command to see the available repositories list (source list).

As you can see from the output below, only the msstore and winget repositories are enabled by default.

You can add a third-party repository to your list, but that is out of scope for this guide.

2. Next, run the command below to update your repositories, which is good practice.

3. After updating, run the winget list command below to list all available software in the winget repository.

The output is truncated in the following screenshot since it’s a long list.

4. Finally, run the following command to revert the changes you made to your repositories. This command will reset the repositories to their default state forcefully (–force), which is helpful if you accidentally make any changes.

Conclusion

Winget is a powerful tool that lets you install, uninstall and update software easily. And this tutorial showed you the basics of using Winget. You can now confidently use Winget to manage software on your Windows system.
