How to Make Anime: Part 1

So you’re the type of otaku who collects figurines and manga like you’re storing food for the apocalypse. You learned Japanese by watching a bucket-load of anime and then realised that it would be useless when actually speaking to a Japanese person. You work two jobs to save up for that must-do Japan tour and you would give up everything you owned to become a mangaka. Well, then this article is for you!! Here, I’ll take you through what it takes to make an anime.

Now, I am by no means an expert on making animation, but as a novice comic book creator I have spent a lot of time researching plot development and character creation, and the one thing I can say is that everyone has a different way of creating a story. Every person has a unique perspective on life, and as a good writer you will be able to let that shine through in your work, because at the end of the day if you’re being true to who you are, it will be easier to create a solid idea.

Scene from Shirobako

When looking at how to make an anime, you will not only be challenged with having to know how to direct and write a screenplay, but also knowing what makes a good anime, as opposed to a live action production. Meaning that you will need to study the anime genre and the concepts behind it. What makes a good anime? what makes a bad anime? And finally, what kind of message you are trying to convey to your audience. There are so many things to consider!

The Basics of How to Make Anime

Scene from Shirobako

Plot Line

Not to be confused with world creation, plot line is the idea that you want to convey to your audience. While humans can communicate with words we often find that words are simply not enough. That is why storytelling is so highly valued in most cultures, it is a way for us to express our deepest emotions and perceptions through movement, sound, visuals and writing.

Generally speaking plot line consists of ideas, emotions, scenes, memes and themes (moods). A good writer will be able to use all of these things in their story but a great writer will use all of them in harmony.

Ideas

These are your own ideas. You have a story that you would like to share with people, and in order to do that you’ll have to use the other 4 plot attributes the convey that idea. To come up with a plot you will need to understand what you are trying to say? Are you trying to move people with emotion? Are you trying to shine light on a social or environmental issue? Are trying to create an escape from reality for people? Are you simply trying to entertain people?
Finding a focus for your plot stops you from wandering off track and making a meaningless story.

Emotions

Emotions can be powerful allies or plot destroying enemies. So treat them with respect! When creating emotional impact on your audience remember that you need their undivided attention. To do this you need to have the right build up, even surprise deaths and shocker scenes need build up. For the surprise to have the right effect you need to lull your viewer into a sense of security. Make them believe that everything is alright and that there is no way anyone could get hurt. A good example of this is the “Teacher Suicide” scene from Another. If you haven’t seen it then watch it. Its pretty messed up.
Additionally do not draw emotional scenes out. This can lose favour with your audience as they can become immune to what you are trying to convey. Anime is one genre that does this really well so you have to pay special attention to this when creating one. I cannot tell you how many times I have ended up in tears because of simple things characters have said, but because the creators took the time to build it up properly there was impact.

Scenes

Creating a scene is no easy task. Scenes are not just about showing two characters in a room, it’s about setting a mood, having the right poses, the right camera angles and the right lighting. It would be pointless to have a horror scare scene in a really bright and cheerful room with pink daisies everywhere, unless that is a part of the shock factor of course. But this could backfire if not done correctly. A good example of this type of “out of place» scene setting would be Jungle wa Itsumo Hare nochi Guu. They actually use the light scenery to make Guu’s antics even more creepy.
Scene setting is a topic I could go on and on about but since I am covering this in part 2 of How to make an anime, I ‘ll refrain.

Memes

Memes are an undervalued plot device in my opinion. Memes are how you get your audience to relate to your plot. By creating something that they can identify with you create a bond, something they can care about. Whether it is a character type that is similar to them or a situation that most people have been in you should always use these memes to your advantage. For example, a popular anime stereotype in anime is the school setting. The majority of us on the planet have attended school and most of us wished it was way more exciting. That is part of why this type of anime is so popular.

How to make anime opening. Смотреть фото How to make anime opening. Смотреть картинку How to make anime opening. Картинка про How to make anime opening. Фото How to make anime opening

Themes (moods)

Themes encompass all of the above. What is the theme of the idea are you trying to communicate? Is the idea a sad one? A happy one? A shocking one?

What emotional themes are you trying to communicate? Are they sad or happy?
What memes will you use in order to convey that theme? Is the main character quiet or are they loud and funny?
How are you going to set your scenes according to this theme? Will they be dark and broody or light and fluffy?
Once you have an idea in mind you need to decide what theme or themes you are going to us in order to know how to proceed.

Character Creation

How to make anime opening. Смотреть фото How to make anime opening. Смотреть картинку How to make anime opening. Картинка про How to make anime opening. Фото How to make anime opening

Character creation is interchangeable with plot line, as you do not need to come up with a story line first. In fact I personally find it easier to create a few characters first and then build a plot and world around them. In my opinion it gives more depth to the characters as their world becomes an extension of their characters, it also helps you understand the characters as individuals allowing you to create more emotional context.

Character development can be one of the most rewarding parts of the whole creative process. This is where you can be completely creative with no limits on what you are creating, your characters can be dark and brooding or light and cheerful. They can be an emotional mess or clever and witty. The possibilities are endless which is why it can also be the most difficult part of the process. That’s why I suggest keeping in mind these few things:

Write what you know.

There is nothing more frustrating than trying to create a character and not being able to understand his/her motives. You may see a character on a show and think “Wow, I really want a character like that in my anime, they are sooo damn cool!”. Stop! If you cannot get into that character’s head and understand them, then you won’t be able to do them justice. The reason that character is so awesome in the first place is because the creator understood that character and what made them tick. They know where and when they would react and in what manner.

A good example would be me trying to understand how a 45 year old man with two kids and a wife would react to something. As a 25 year old woman with no sense of responsibility, it’s hard for me to put myself in his shoes. Therefore I wouldn’t write about someone like that unless I could find a good case study for that character.

I’m not saying don’t write about people who are different to you, as that would just make for a really boring and one sided story. I’m saying that if you do, try and get a case study or look at how that character type was used in other anime, you will eventually find a repeating pattern that helps you understand them better. It will only benefit your anime in the end.

Consistency

This is one of my pet peeves when it comes to any storytelling medium! You have a character who acts in a certain way the whole way through a series and then for some reason, out of the blue, they do something that is so out of their character just to conveniently create or solve a plot development. This is only fine when there is a valid reason behind it, say the character is possessed or something, otherwise you start to make your audience doubt your stories validity. And that is when you get the plot-hole-trolls who like to rip your work to shreds. This breed of troll should be treated like a zoo animal. Do not feed!

How to make anime opening. Смотреть фото How to make anime opening. Смотреть картинку How to make anime opening. Картинка про How to make anime opening. Фото How to make anime opening

Experiment

One of the best ways to test your characters limits is to play with them a little. Once you have a few characters created and a basic plot you will find yourself thinking up all kinds of scenes. This is a natural part of the process and you should try and encourage this behaviour in yourself. I like to write these imagined scenes down and then adjust them when I feel the need.
In these creative moments you should toy with your characters emotions and reactions, try and see what makes them cry, what makes them laugh and how they interact with one another. This sounds really odd, I know, but think of it as method acting for writers.

Have fun

This is something I learned a little later on but for the love of all that is Otaku, learn to have fun with your project! I got stuck in thinking that I had to be serious in order to finish the project but when I let go and just enjoyed what I was doing things became way more natural. I finished the plot line for the first season of my comic in two weeks and drew the first 20 pages of the first book in the following two weeks. Its was fun and I was creating an entire world around me.

So take a deep breath and get ready to dive into a whole new world because that is the path you are going down if you choose to take on a project like making an anime.

Character development

How to make anime opening. Смотреть фото How to make anime opening. Смотреть картинку How to make anime opening. Картинка про How to make anime opening. Фото How to make anime opening

Character development may seem like it’s a part of the character creation process but I really believe it needs its own section in this article. This is also an important step, but not one that needs to be set in stone.

Where character creation is the design of a character, be it stereotypical or original, character development is the end result of that character creation. This is about who you want that character to become as the anime plays out. This is especially important in anime as anime is very focused on emotion. Take Yuki Takeya from Gakkougurashi! for example, at first she seems like this really spaced out happy character, but as the series goes on you come to realize that she is incredibly fragile and scared. She evolves into a more stable character in the end who comes to accept what is happening to her but still manages to smile.

You shouldn’t completely change your character into something new as that would not be very realistic, we as humans will always be who we are at the core. But we live and learn through our interactions and experiences and that is what you want to do with your characters to.
Give them challenges that they can overcome and grow from, give them relationships that make them better or worse people and avoid making them invincible. Characters who can overcome everything never learn or evolve so they are never allowed to become more than what they already are.

World creation

How to make anime opening. Смотреть фото How to make anime opening. Смотреть картинку How to make anime opening. Картинка про How to make anime opening. Фото How to make anime opening
Scene from Macross Frontier

This is something I find lacking in most novice writers’ story lines. People seem to forget that their characters exist in a world of their own. Yes, your characters may exist in modern day society on planet earth just like the rest of us but their everyday life may not be the same as yours. The way we see the world depends on a lot of factors, what culture we live in, what customs we keep, what age we are, what experiences we’ve had. No one sees the world in the same way and this can affect a story greatly. When creating the world take a few things into consideration.

Are you going to have extraordinary characters in an ordinary world and how do their extraordinary views affect their surroundings?

Are you going to create ordinary characters in an extraordinary world and how do their surroundings affect them?

Are you going to have extraordinary characters in an extraordinary world and how will they affect each other?

Anime is a very visual medium so you always want to focus on the unusual in all of the above situations. There is no point in creating something cool if it’s never going to see the light of day, unless it’s an enticement ploy, then give the viewer just enough but leave them wanting more.

Fffeww. I think I may just have written an essay here. Rather unusual for my lazy self, but as you can see this is something I’m passionate about. That is why this is only the first part of a four part series on how to make an anime. Next week I will be taking you through the next step in this fantastic process, I will be discussing how to refine your story line and how to turn it into a proposal for potential artists and studios. In the meantime you can find me at All Otaku Online or visit our Facebook page where we share whatever the hell we feel like.
Until next time, sayounara, and thanks for all the fish.

How to Make Anime? How an Awesome Anime is Made?

We love anime, anime is awesome and by all mean, anime is definitely not just “children shows”. There are tons of beloved anime series and movies like Naruto, One Piece, Death Note, all of Studio Ghibli’s anime, Your Name, and more… All of these anime series and movies have really fascinating story, interesting characters, and good animation. Which leads us to a question: “How to make anime?” Luckily, we now have the answer. So with no further ado, let’s find out!

1. What is Anime?

Although anime is popular all around the world nowadays, we can’t expect all people understand about anime. Simply put, anime is “Japanese cartoon” which is acknowledged as one of Japan’s culture aspects.

Many people consider anime to be “Japanese cartoon” for children. And it’s partly true, many anime series and movies are for children. But there are also tons of anime not for children. Anime is equivalent to Western cartoon, which includes both children cartoons and mature cartoons. The most significant example for this is probably Death Note – a totally mind-hacking and brutal series.

To have a better understanding about anime, we can divide anime into 5 basic categories based on their target audiences:

Shonen

How to make anime opening. Смотреть фото How to make anime opening. Смотреть картинку How to make anime opening. Картинка про How to make anime opening. Фото How to make anime opening

Naruto, one of the “Big Four” (Source: Internet)

In Japanese, the word “shonen” (少年) refers to young boys of 15 years old or less. And as you can guess, shonen anime aims at this group of audience. Most of anime in this category are adventure, fighting anime involving a young male protagonist. There are also other shonen anime about comedy and female protagonists, yet the adventure-action genre is still in dominance. In these shonen anime, we can see quite a number of fan-services (which young boys really seem to like).

Typical Shonen Anime: Naruto, One Piece, Dragon Ball, and Bleach.

Seinen

How to make anime opening. Смотреть фото How to make anime opening. Смотреть картинку How to make anime opening. Картинка про How to make anime opening. Фото How to make anime opening

Gantz, one of the most brutal and violent anime (Source: Internet)

While shonen anime is for young boys of 15 years old or less, “seinen” (青年) is for young male from 15 to 24 years old. As the results, seinen anime often has more mature and adult elements like psychological element and higher violent level. Still, there are seinen comedies and of course these comedies had more mature elements. Since people from 15 to 24 is considered as “young adults”, it is no surprise if some anime has pornographic element.

Typical Seinen Anime: Berserk and Gantz.

Shojo

Sailors Moon (Source: Internet)

Boys surely aren’t the only audience target for anime. Of course, we also have anime for girls. These anime for girls called as “shojo” (少女) which aims at girls from 10 to 18 years old. The main theme of shojo anime is mostly about romance and relationships. Interestingly, this category also includes several romance anime about male homosexual love (which we often hear as “yuri”). Besides romance, shojo anime can also involve adventure and action with young girls as protagonists.

Typical Shojo Anime: Sailor Moon, Kimi to Todoke, and Rose of Versailles.

Josei

How to make anime opening. Смотреть фото How to make anime opening. Смотреть картинку How to make anime opening. Картинка про How to make anime opening. Фото How to make anime opening

Chihayafuru (Source: Internet)

Josei” (女性) is for adult women and it is understandable if anime of this category is not widely known in international level. Like shojo, josei anime mostly focus on romance. However, while shojo anime often features idealistic and dreamy love, josei anime are more realistic. These josei anime may even include serious subjects like raping. Adventure-action based josei anime are available but again, there are not much of them. The main protagonists in these anime are female, yet, some anime have male antagonists and many of them are “yuri”.

Typical Josei Anime: Ristorante Paradiso, Nana, and Chihayafuru.

Kodomomuke

How to make anime opening. Смотреть фото How to make anime opening. Смотреть картинку How to make anime opening. Картинка про How to make anime opening. Фото How to make anime opening

Doraemon, an extremely popular anime for kids (Source: Internet)

Now that we have anime for teenagers and adults, what we have left is anime for children. Children anime, or “Kodomomuke” (子供向け), focuses on children and they often have simple stories which often teach children about morality and various lessons.

Typical Kodomomuke Anime: Doraemon, Hello Kitty, and Anpanman.

So now that we have classified 5 most basic categories of anime, let’s get onto our main topic which is how to make anime!

2. How to Make Anime?

To us viewers, watching anime is definitely an entertaining experience; however, for the producers, making an anime is definitely not an easy task. Making anime consists of many complicated steps; therefore, in this case we will only mention the basic framework.

The anime production can be separated into 3 big phases: Pre-Production, Production, and Post-Production, starting with Pre-Production phase:

Pre-Production Phase

How to make anime opening. Смотреть фото How to make anime opening. Смотреть картинку How to make anime opening. Картинка про How to make anime opening. Фото How to make anime opening

Naruto, original manga series by Masashi Kishimoto (Source: Internet)

In order to start every anime, we always need to have original stories and ideas. In case of original anime (which is not adaptation of any other entertainment products), it’s all start with the original authors. The stories by original authors (who mostly are directors or employees within the studios) will be sent to the production studios, and then to the production companies. The typical example for original anime is Studio Ghibli with many famous anime like Princess Mononoke and My Neighbor Totoro.

On the other hand, anime adaptation mostly begins with the original manga or novel authors. The production companies will contact the authors first, then they contact with production studios to start making the anime. We can see tons of anime adaptations of many famous series these days like Dragon Ball, Naruto, One Piece, and Sword Art Online.

After getting stories and ideas, we will get to the next planning step which are early designing characters and setting up teams. In this phase, characters are early designed in order to be suitable for the anime. And with that, we continue to In-Production Phase.

In-Production Phase

Scripts and Storyboard

How to make anime opening. Смотреть фото How to make anime opening. Смотреть картинку How to make anime opening. Картинка про How to make anime opening. Фото How to make anime opening

Without these script, you will have no idea what to do. (Source: Internet)

For starters, a full script will be written for each episode. If the script is accepted, it will be time to make storyboard. The story board is a bit similar to drawing manga, but its purpose is to show the characters position, actions, settings, and camera angle in each scene.

Besides the story board, the landscapes and backgrounds will be designed, while characters will get more details. In terms of background, in the past backgrounds are often hand drawn. But nowadays, backgrounds are digital designed since it is much quicker and cheaper than traditional hand-drawn method.

Animation

How to make anime opening. Смотреть фото How to make anime opening. Смотреть картинку How to make anime opening. Картинка про How to make anime opening. Фото How to make anime opening

Kill la Kill Animation Artbooks (Source: Internet)

When these steps are finished, it’s time to start making animation. First off, the key animators will start animation drawings. Basically, their work is to draw the first frame, mid frame, and the last frame of an action. For example, if a character makes a punch, the key animators will draw character about to punch, then at the middle of the punch, then finally the punch impacts.

Afterwards, the inbetween animators will keep track between the three frames and ensure the movements are fluid. Therefore, an anime episode can take tons of hand-drawn pictures to make. It is estimated that a 30-minute anime episode can even take 15000 hand-drawn pictures.

Coloring

How to make anime opening. Смотреть фото How to make anime opening. Смотреть картинку How to make anime opening. Картинка про How to make anime opening. Фото How to make anime opening

Sakura Color Palette (Source: Internet)

After these animation pictures are finished, it’s time for Color Designers to give them life. Each of character is given a particular color palette, and depending on the context, the shader will change. For example, characters have different shaders during day and night.

Since coloring can be an extremely long process, there can be lots of color teams to do the work.

Compositing

How to make anime opening. Смотреть фото How to make anime opening. Смотреть картинку How to make anime opening. Картинка про How to make anime opening. Фото How to make anime opening

Without Compositing step, we won’t see this awesome battle in play. (Source: Internet)

So now that we have all the elements: storyboard, characters, animations, and backgrounds. It’s time to put them together and this process is called as compositing. Characters and backgrounds are put into different scene and given animations. In addition, this is also the time to add effects into the scenes. Besides that, they are also responsible for many other works which finally give us a beautiful and fascinating anime.

Up to this point, the anime is ready for the final phase: the Post-Production Phase.

Post-Production Phase

How to make anime opening. Смотреть фото How to make anime opening. Смотреть картинку How to make anime opening. Картинка про How to make anime opening. Фото How to make anime opening

Masako Nozawa, voice actress of Goku (Source: Internet)

In this post-production phase, the entire episode will be edited and made sure to last within the time limit. This explains why some of the scenes will be deleted, because of the episode’s time limit.

Along with editing, we have voice actors (or seiyuu in Japanese) who give voice for the characters. Interestingly, in Japanese version, many male protagonists are voiced by voice actresses like in case of Goku in Dragon Ball and Naruto. In addition, sound effects are implemented during this step.

After having voice acting, sound effects, and final editing, we have a completed anime episode or movie, readies to be on air.

Do you like The World God Only Knows anime? Unfortunately the studio behind it – Manglobe is bankrupted. (Source: Internet)

By saying anime cost, we don’t mention about the cost of the Bluray DVD cost or Crunchyroll cost to watch an anime. What we want to know more is the cost to make an anime. If you are anime enthusiast, you have probably known that the anime industry is an extremely though one. Making an anime often costs tons of money, while the revenue isn’t always enough to compensate for the cost. This partly explains why there are many anime studios have gone bankrupt in recent years.

And so, this is also the reason why some studios only released season 1 of an anime since they couldn’t afford to make the next season. Therefore, if you are truly anime enthusiast, it’s much recommended to buy your favorite anime merchandises and support the studios. It will be a big help for anime studios in this hard time.

And that’s it folk! Thank you and stay tune for more news in the future!

How to Make Anime Plushies – A Step By Step Guide

Do you want to make your very own anime plushie? Well, this step-by-step guide will teach you how. All you need is some felt (or other fabric), scissors, and thread. The first thing that you should do is print out the pattern for the body of your plushie.

Then cut it out and trace it onto a piece of felt or another fabric with a pencil so that all the lines are still visible on both pieces of material. Next, cut around each line on one side of the paper pattern before folding over the material completely to expose only half of each line on top as well as at least 1/2 inch outside each corner.

What is Anime?

Anime is a popular Japanese animation style that has become more and more popular in America. One of the most recognizable features of anime is the characters’ large, round eyes.

The character’s eyes are so distinctive to anime fans that they even have their own name: “moe.” Making an Anime plushie can be a fun way to express your love of this unique art form! Read on for instructions on how to make your very own moe plushies!

What are Plushies Made Out of?

Plushies are made out of many materials, but the most popular are fleece fabric, felt, or recycled clothing. Fleece is very easy to work with and it comes in so many colors! For beginners though, I would suggest starting off with felt because not only is it easier to find your way around, but it is also much cheaper than soft fabrics.

You can even use old soft items you have lying around the house like pillows or towels for your first attempts – just make sure they aren’t too thin! If you’re feeling brave enough though, go ahead and try using a plush fabric instead. To transform that old t-shirt into a cool plush toy check out our post on t-shirt plushies!

How to Make Anime Plushies – a step by step guide

To make the Anime Plushies follow the below steps:

Step 1

First, choose your favorite anime character and print out the pattern for your plushie. You may need to resize your pattern depending on what character you’re making; different characters have different body proportions and sizes. Anime eyes can be as big as they look in the anime or smaller, depending on if you want a more realistic appearance or not. For this tutorial, I will be showing how to make an anime-style girl with huge eyes that are close together

Step 2

Trace the pattern onto two pieces of felt or other fabric with a pencil so that all of the lines are still visible on both pieces of material. If you want any additional features such as wings or tails, now is also a good time to cut those out.

Step 3

Next, cut out each piece along the drawn lines. Be sure that you only cut one side at a time so that you can still see all of your drawn lines when folding over the material later on.

Step 4

Cut around each line on one side of the paper pattern before folding over the material completely to expose only half of each line on top as well as at least 1/2 inch outside each corner

Step 5

Now, sew around each drawn line with either white or pink thread (or whatever color matches your felt). It might help to use a contrasting color for this step since it will make following your drawn lines easier after flipping the pieces inside out later on. Once finished, flip both pieces inside out and press them flat with a pressing cloth to make them look nice and neat.

Step 6

Sew up the bottom of your plushie, but leave an opening large enough for you to be able to turn it inside out. Then, stuff it lightly before turning it right-side-out again through the opening in the bottom that you left open earlier on

Step 7

If you want any additional features such as wings or tails, now is also a good time to sew those onto your plushie. For example, if your anime character has cat ears then attach them using a needle and thread while they are still inside-out so that their base is flush against the head while the rest of each ear hangs freely outside. Once finished making additions, turn down (right side out) and stuff your plushie. Then, sew the opening shut using a whip stitch to make it look nicer.

Step 8

You will notice that if you turn your plushie over then the bottom is not completely smooth like the top of the head and body are. To fix this problem, press on either side of where you sewed up the bottom of your plushie with two fingers while holding them together vertically (not horizontally).

Then, use a small piece of scrap material or fabric and wrap it around this area several times until it looks nice and neat on either side of where you sewed up the bottom of your plushie. Make sure that there is no extra space at all in between each loop before securing it tightly with a strong thread or string.

Step 9

For those of you who want to add a face, sew it on now! Use the same color as your plushie for better results and make sure that you align your facial features properly before securing them tightly by sewing them on with a strong thread or string to make sure they won’t come off easily. Once finished, turn your plushie over again and admire the effort you’ve put in!

Or if something didn’t go well then use a pair of scissors to snip away any abnormally long strands of thread sticking out from inside-out parts of your plushie’s head and tail. If you’re feeling extra careful then start using lighter colors of thread instead because it’ll be less obvious if you snip away any strands of darker thread.

Conclusion:

Now that you’ve learned how to make an anime plushie, it’s time for a few tips and tricks on what makes the perfect plushie. We recommend using good quality fabric because if not, they can tear or rip easily. Also, use a low heat iron so as not to melt anything together. And lastly, have fun with this project! It may be daunting at first but once you get going it’ll feel like second nature in no time!

Например, в «K-On!»
