How to create a game on Roblox with Roblox Studio

What’s not to love about Roblox? We talk about it often, it’s been a wildly popular summer camp option, and now a popular virtual camp learning destination. The free-to-play platform has captured the hearts and attention of kids worldwide.
And for us parents, you can find assurance in the fact that Roblox community safety is a primary concern, with Roblox taking the topic and general online safety of kids very seriously.
We’re always here to make Roblox easier for parents to navigate, and our Roblox dictionary, breakdown of the similarities and differences between Roblox and Minecraft, and guides to the educational benefits of Roblox and how to play and get started in Roblox are just a few resources to help get going!
How to make a Roblox game using Roblox Studio
Along those same lines, we wanted to take some time to provide tutorial instruction on how your student can go about creating their own game on Roblox (maybe even a parkour obby)—starting with the basics of creating an account and downloading Roblox Studio, and then moving into building an obstacle course and walking through the many steps involved in doing so.
1. Create a Roblox account
Creating an account is the very first step for anyone wanting to build their own Roblox worlds.
Begin with opening roblox.com in your preferred browser, and then creating a character by filling out the following info:
Birthday: Select the month, day, and year of your creator’s birthday. According to Laura, the Director of Community Safety and Digital Civility at Roblox, inputting the accurate date of birth is important as the strictness of features like text chat will be adjusted based on age.
Username: Here you’ll create a username or “screen name” that others will know your character by. Another safety precaution—don’t use anything close to a real name here. This should be an entirely fictional moniker as it will be visible to other account holders.
Password: Add a password just as you would with other website logins. Again, take the password seriously and stay away from way-too-easy-to-guess combinations of “123456,” “Password123,” and the like.
After, click “Sign Up.”
2. Install Roblox Studio
Once the account has been created, you’ll be automatically logged into Roblox, and now ready to download and install Roblox Studio.
(Again, this is a guide for parents. Kids should never download anything without parental permission.)
3. View Roblox game examples
With the basics out of the way, it might be useful to pause and check out a few different types of games that can be created using Roblox Studio:
Survival games
Natural Disaster Survival is a game where 20 players get together and try to survive a number of different types of natural disasters. In this type of game, players aren’t out to get each other, so the only way to lose is by way of a «part» breaking free and flying around the arena.
Hide and Seek games
Hide and Seek games work just like they do in real life—players hide throughout the world and one person must search and find them!
Tycoon games are one of the few single-player-type games in the Roblox community. The goal of tycoon games is to open any kind of store (restaurant, theme park, etc.) and then try to grow the business.
In this game, players can become restaurant millionaires by successfully serving customers food. Happy customers means more money with which builders can expand their business, hire workers, get more tables, and even open a second restaurant!
4. Build an obstacle course
All of that said, the first game that one will probably create is an obstacle course, or «Obby.» (Check out our Roblox dictionary!) An Obby is a game where the player must navigate many different obstacles and mazes to make it to the finish line in a timely manner.
To get started, open the editor.
Once the editor is opened, you’ll see and start with a baseplate, which is a basic starting template used to build a project.
Navigating the editor
Before an obstacle is built, it’s valuable to get familiar with how to fly around this brand new world!
Here is a breakdown of what each button will allow players to do:
Tip: On the mouse, holding right-click allows players to rotate whichever way the camera is facing. A simple way to navigate is to right-click and hold while pressing W. This will fly players in the direction they’re currently facing while allowing them to move the mouse to steer.
Inserting and moving a part
Obstacle courses are made up of many different «parts,» which are physical objects that can be inserted into a level.
To go about doing so, look towards the top of the screen and locate the “Part” icon. For this example, select the “block” part.
Once clicked, you can now drag your part around the editor, and if you’d like to make it larger or smaller, or even have it face another direction, you can utilize the “scale” or “rotate” buttons.
Both actions function similarly to what you’ve probably experienced in other programs, for instance, with the scale option offering different draggable dots on your part that can be used to extend or shrink it.
A key feature of most Obbys is the floatable part; that is, a part that isn’t affected by gravity, and thus suspended in air.
You can anchor the part from the properties menu. To access, click your block and look to the bottom-right corner of the screen. Here you’ll see your part properties, and will be able to check the box next to “anchored” in order to implement the behavior.
Building the first steps
With a block anchored, more of them can be added in the same manner in order to create “steps.”
5. Test the game
While we’ve only touched on creating a few basics with this new game, it’s important to stop and test each iteration to ensure players are capable of making the newly-created jumps, and that blocks are appropriately-sized and spaced.
To enter Play mode and test:
That’s it! (That’s it?)
Yes, that’s it in terms of learning what it takes to create a game in Roblox! But no, that’s not entirely all that’s available to game creators!
For instance, while building an obstacle course, platforms can be made to look however the creator desires. They can be long and thin, have a slope, or even be a floating cone! That’s the beauty of game creation from scratch—anything is possible.
Here are a couple of other actions that might come in handy:
Duplicate: The Duplicate tool allows designers to create copies of an object to use as many times as they want! It’s also useful for populating levels with lots of different models very quickly; for example, making more platforms out of the ones that have already been created. (Right click, then “duplicate.”)
SpawnLocation: SpawnLocation is the location that a player will appear when they first enter the world or when they die in the game. Without a designated place for a player to start, they might spawn in the middle of nowhere and fall to their doom, repeatedly. (“+” under “Workspace” and type “SpawnLocation.”)
From here, creators can also design to their heart’s content, adding colors and making their worlds more visually appealing.
Checkpoints are also necessary so that players can progress through levels and then restart (spawn) at the provided point should they die (and not have to begin all the way back at the beginning).
6. Coding and beyond
While the above breakdown is enough to get any new creator going with their own game in Roblox, there is so much more that can be accomplished thanks to the power of code!
Roblox uses Lua, which stands out as a fun option when it comes to kids coding languages. With Lua, coders can take games to new heights, including features like explosions, new characters, and swords that wield awesome power.
Never coded before? No problem!
Part of the beauty of Roblox is how gameplay and other content kids already enjoy bridge the gap between old and new knowledge. Your child might already love playing hours of Roblox, or perhaps is a big fan of YouTube personalities like Dude Perfect; these experiences are an excellent foundation that makes learning to code more approachable.
If you’re interested in getting your kids started in Roblox, consider a Roblox tutor, and check out our online coding classes for kids or Virtual Tech Camps, which offer a handful of courses that focus on Roblox, including:

PLEASE READ BELOW:
RESIDENCE HALL RULES AND REGULATIONS
Alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, laser pens, fireworks, explosives, and all weapons are absolutely prohibited in the hall. It is against the law to tamper or misuse building fire alarm or fire-fighting equipment. Tampering with or misuse of elevator alarms, emergency call buttons or calling 911 from a room or elevator telephone, except in an emergency, is against the law. Penalties will be enforced.
Each room will be inspected prior to arrival and before departure and any damages to the room or to University property will be assessed and charged to the program, which may then be assessed to the participant. The room must be left in the same condition as it was during move in. Do not fasten anything to the walls or tamper with window screens. Excessive mess resulting in extra housekeeping hours will result in a charge to the program, and may be passed on to the student.
Appropriate behavior is expected at all times. Engaging in sexual contact with another student is a violation of our conduct policy. Leaving the program or residence hall without permission and appropriate supervision is a violation of our conduct policy. Bullying, taunting or threatening behavior toward other students is a violation of our conduct policy. Excessive noise or rowdiness will not be tolerated. Dangerous behavior, including fighting, is a violation and will not be tolerated. Throwing items out of residence hall windows is a conduct violation.
The use of candles, open flames, explosives, smoke bombs, “snaps”, or fireworks is dangerous and will not be tolerated in the residence halls, or at any U-M facility.
WE ARE A SMOKE FREE CAMPUS. SMOKING ON CAMPUS OR IN OUR BUILDINGS IS PROHIBITED.
All students residing in a University of Michigan residence hall must be ten (10) years of age on or before the start of their program. There are no exceptions to this policy.
All medications prescribed by a doctor must be dispensed by program nurse or counselors. Please fill out the medical forms and bring medications to the attention of the program staff at registration. Housing staff are not authorized to dispense medications.
ALL VISITORS, INCLUDING PARENTS MUST CHECK-IN FIRST WITH THE FRONT DESK WHEN VISITING A STUDENT. Only students and program staff are allowed in the living areas of the building. At no time are students permitted in the living areas to which they are not assigned. Students may only be checked out of the residence hall by a parent/guardian or program staff. Visitors, other than parents, who may be taking the student from the residence hall, must be approved by the parent/guardian during registration.
KEYS AND STUDENT IDENTIFICATION
Students are identified in a variety of ways including room keys and lanyards. Some programs may use wristbands. Any identification specific to the program will be issued along with a room keycard and lanyard at check-in. If the identification is lost, a replacement may be obtained at the front desk or from a staff member. The room keycard and identification should not be loaned to anyone and are not transferable.
You may eat at any time during the hours your program has designated for meals. Students may be asked to show program identification at mealtime. In the case of lost identification, help is always available from dining and program staff. Meal hours will be provided by your program staff and are available from residence hall staff as well. Students are expected to eat meals in their assigned dining facility during their designated meal times. Food allergies should be reported to the program and dining staff prior to the student’s arrival.
Land lines are being phased out of residence halls due to the prevailing use of cell phones by our students. Students may place collect and credit card calls from their room phone (if available) and receive long distance calls. Counselors will assist students with urgent telephone needs.
Students are not to bring private automobiles or motorcycles to the University. If it is necessary for a student to drive, please discuss permission and parking with the program organizers. The vehicle must be registered and the keys turned in to the program organizers/counselors during the entire program. The University assumes no responsibility for a stored vehicle on University property.
The University assumes no responsibility for personal property. Please leave valuable electronic items at home. Bring only a small amount of personal expense money with you since the halls do not have any secured storage facilities. You may wish to consult with your insurance company regarding coverage of your personal property while away at program.
FOR SECURITY, ROOM DOORS ARE TO BE LOCKED AT ALL TIMES.
Room checks will be conducted by program staff to determine room damages. Any damages caused in the rooms or common areas will be charged to the program. The program may decide to pass along damage expenses to the student.
Mail will be distributed to program counselor to give to students. Mail should be addressed as follows:

If you want to make you block spin add this into the script:
while true do.
script.Parent.CFrame = script.Parent.CFrame * CFrame.fromEulerAnglesXYZ(.0,.1,.0) Spinning Part.
wait().
end.
If you want to make the block kill you as well make sure to add a new script and put this inside:
script.Parent.Touched:connect(function(hit).
if hit and hit.Parent and hit.Parent:FindFirstChild(“Humanoid”) then.
hit.Parent.Humanoid.Health = 0.
end.
end).
Hope this helps!

So, at the top of the script, you just need to create each ball.

How to Make a Walkthrough Brick in Roblox Studio [UPDATED]
Introduction: How to Make a Walkthrough Brick in Roblox Studio [UPDATED]
Hey guys, I’ve done this instructables on my old account, Roblox Tutorials. I got a comment not long ago (like literally today) and, I decided to update it, hope you enjoy!
Step 1: Open Roblox Studio
First of course, open Roblox Studio. This step is VERY important! Be sure to enter the place you want your walkthrough brick/part.
Step 2: Configuring
So you’re gonna get the model or the part out on your baseplate.
For the tutorial, I’ll just use a normal part.
The first few seconds are me putting the part in the baseplate, the rest is only me configuring the surfaces, to the next step!
Attachments
Step 3: Making It Actually Walkthrough
For this, it’s very simple! Just select your part and scroll down in the properties, there you’ll see Behavior tab.

kind of weird but eh, it worked
4 Reason you my favourite:
1. You Show How to Script.
2. You Bring me deeper into scripting(i dont even know what | for i, v in pairs()| can do before).
3. You leave Free Model In description, which allow me to examine and change your script into what i want.
4. You still show how to Scripting even you making your own game.
it would be 5 if he give scripts for free
Where’s the model??
Yea but the model does not work for this video.
@MERTO Ngl. sometime your mistakes make me laugh. well even it old one.
Example 1:30:15
i did that too lol
Thank you very much, I appreciate it ❤️
You should make a quest system where the player has to collect a item then bring it back
just imagine how much time this absolute legend spent on making this masterpiece!
Thanks this is was very helpful, I’m doing it a bit different with my game though and I’ve got like 5 scripts just for handling quests XD
Thanks man you really helped me!
Very cool! Thanks 🙂
I just love how he gets some mistakes, but we all still get entertained!
정말 최고네요 퀘스트 엄청 궁금했는대 대단해요
This was so helpful, thank you! Subbed 🙂
is there a way to make the npcs spawn from the serverstorage once the quest begins?
How can I change the NPC to kill and the amount of NPC to kill in your model? 🤔
How do you change the weapon that you need to attack with?
Thank you so much this helped a lot! You deserve a sub!
#bosses
Bro amazing work as always your scripts are always so easy to understand and u get straight to the point
@MERTO if hit.Parent == Player.Character then return end
if hit and hit.Parent:FindFirstChild(«Humanoid») then
local EnemyHum2 = hit.Parent:FindFirstChild(«Humanoid»)
local EnemyRoot2 = hit.Parent:FindFirstChild(«HumanoidRootPart»)
Player:WaitForChild(«Data»):WaitForChild(«Exp»).Value = Player:WaitForChild(«Data»):WaitForChild(«Exp»).Value + math.random(400,800)
Player:WaitForChild(«Data»):WaitForChild(«SwordSpiritExp»).Value = Player:WaitForChild(«Data»):WaitForChild(«SwordSpiritExp»).Value + math.random(400,800)
local baseDmg = 60
baseDmg = baseDmg + (Player:WaitForChild(«Data»):WaitForChild(«Intelligence»).Value *(3))
hit.Parent.Humanoid:TakeDamage(baseDmg)
fist2:Destroy()
@MERTO do you know how to add the hitfolder /player int value to this line of my script?
