What is Hangman?
Hangman is an easy word game to play when you need to pass the time or when you only have a short amount of time to play a game. It is especially enjoyable for people who like guessing games and word games.
How to Play Hangman
In the traditional version of Hangman, the object of the game is to guess the word before the stick figure character is fully drawn. In our version, you have to save the character by guessing the full word before all the balloons pop!
Learning how to play Hangman is easy! When playing traditionally, one person thinks of a secret word that the other person will try to guess. They display spaces to represent each letter of the word or phrase that they have in mind. Take note that proper nouns and slang words are not allowed!
The guessing player takes as many turns as they need to guess letters that might make up the word the other player has in mind. The guessing player keeps up until they either solve the word or phrase or until the character has all its parts drawn (or all the balloons pop!).
The puzzle giver may not change the word or phrase that they have in mind throughout the game, and they will fill in correct letters to the applicable part of the puzzle. If a letter is guessed but doesn’t fit the puzzle, that letter is displayed so the guesser can keep track of what they have already said.
For each incorrect letter, the puzzle giver also adds a body appendage to the character (or pops a balloon). The traditional appendages are made up of a head, body, two arms, and two legs. To make the game easier for the guesser, the puzzle giver can provide more tries by adding items like hair, hands, and feet to the character before deciding the game’s over. In our version, you’ll have a different amount of balloons to hang on to, depending on the difficulty you chose.
If the guessing player fills in the entire word or phrase before the character is drawn out, they win. The guesser can also win if they solve the word or phrase before all the letters are filled in. If the character is finished before either of these things happen, the puzzle giver wins.
Hangman Strategies
When playing traditionally, the puzzle giver can enhance their chance of winning in various ways. They can choose a phrase rather than a simple word. This means that the guessing player will have more letters to figure out which makes it more challenging. The puzzle giver can also choose a word or phrase that uses more uncommon letters. Examples of these uncommon letters are “j,” “x,” and “z.” Secret words with more vowels are also harder to guess.
However, playing online is a bit different. Here are some tips for playing Hangman online:
Common letters first! The guessing player often starts by guessing the most commonly used letters. Examples of commonly used letters include “r,” “s,” “t,” “l,” “n,” and “e.” Guessing common words is key when learning how to play Hangman, as this will give you a major advantage when playing with other new players.
Think about the category. No matter what difficulty you play, the category at the start of each game helps the guessing players narrow down what the secret word could be. Examples of categories are person, place, or thing.
Now that you know how to play Hangman, you’re ready to take on the beast! You can play hangman online to practice your skills and strategies. Playing word search games online is another fun way to hone your word game skills and come up with new words to use in hangman the next time you are a puzzle giver.
Hangman
This is an article about the game hangman and how to play it in the classroom. It is specifically aimed at teachers of ESL students. If you are looking for a version of hangman that students can play individually, then click here. Alternatively, if you are looking for a version to play with an interactive whiteboard, then you can download one with this link.
How to play
To play hangman in the classroom, you first have to make some space on the board. Then think of a word or phrase that the students will be able to guess. An example would be the word «kangaroo» or the phrase «I think therefore I am». Then, at the bottom of the board, draw a dash «_» to represent each letter of the word/phrase. For «kangaroo» this would be «_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _». Then students put their hands up and call out letters of the alphabet. If the word/phrase contains that letter, then you write the letter above the dash. So if a student calls out «a», you fill in the letters to make «_ a _ _ a _ _ _». However, if the word/phrase doesn’t contain the letter, then you draw part of the hangman.
The hangman is a series of straight lines and it is made by drawing them in order. Each part is one straight line, so for each incorrect letter, you draw one line on the board. The hangman is made of about 4/5 lines for the gallows, and then another line each for the limbs, head and torso of the man. The final part is the noose around the neck. This should be the last part and once you draw the noose, the game is lost and the students have failed.
The aim of the game is for the students to guess all the letters before you finish drawing the hangman. If they can do this, then they win the game. Otherwise, they lose and you have to reveal the missing letters. If the word or phrase is difficult, then you can modify the number of lines needed to draw the hangman. Once the game is complete, you can repeat for a different word/phrase.
A variation involves putting the students in teams and having each team take turns to guess the letters. If they guess correctly, then they keep guessing until they miss a letter. You can give points for each correct letter guessed and/or a number of points for completing the word/phrase. Another variation would be to fill in the vowels at the start to make it easier.
Realistically, the game has limited educational value beyond practice spelling words or refreshing student’s familiarity with particular phrases. However, the game can be used as an engaging lead in to a topic. It can get students attention and start to get them thinking about certain things. Typically though, the main use for the game is as something to do at the end of class. In a situation where you have finished your lesson plan but there are still a few minutes left, then hangman is a simple way to keep students attention for the last few minutes. It is useful as it is simple to play and you can continue to repeat with new words until the bell rings.
The words or phrases that you should depend on your class and the level of your students. One good idea, is to use words that review vocabulary that you studied in previous lessons. Longer words/phrases are typically better than short ones as then have more letters and so students are more likely to guess correctly. Another strategy is to give clues to the students as to the type of word. For example, you could tell the students that it is a fruit, or a sport. Famous quotes or mottos are also good content to use, as are song lyrics or lines from a movie.

How to Play Hangman
Hangman is one of the most popular games in the world, easy to play, easy to learn and very enjoyable.
Hangman Players
Hangman is a two player game however more than two players can play in a team scenario.
Requirements
All you need is a Pen & Paper and your enthusiasm!
Hangman Instructions
Two players alternate between being the person who thinks of the word and the person who guesses the word.
One player (Player 1) takes charge of the paper and pen and needs to think of a word for the other player (Player 2) to guess. It can be any word at all, adjective, noun, adverb, verb etc.
Player 1 then writes down dashes at the bottom of the page, one dash representing each letter of the word Player 1 has chosen for Player 2 to guess.
Player 1 then needs to draw a gallows typically represented by two horizontal lines and a vertical line on the left hand side connecting the two horizontal lines, as well as a small diagonal line on the top left hand side.
Player 2 can now begin guessing letters to ultimately guess the word Player 1 has chosen. Typically vowels ‘a’, ‘e’, ‘I’, ‘o’ and ‘u’ are first to be guessed to maximize the chances of guessing a letter that will be in the word. The next most popular letters include ‘t’, ‘n’, ‘s’, ‘h’, ‘r’, ‘d’ and ‘l’. Of course, which letters to guess will also depend on the word at hand and the letter placement of the letters guessed so far.
For every letter Player 2 guesses that is within the word Player 1 has chosen, Player 1 will write the letter on the dash corresponding to where it is located on the word. For every letter Player 2 guesses that is not within the word Player 1 has chosen, Player 1 must draw a body part of the stick figure on the gallows. The choice of how many body parts to include in the game should be decided between players before the game. Whether to have both arms as one body part or whether they should be separate, whether to include facial features such as eyes, ears, nose, mouth etc. is up to the players discretion. This will ultimately influence the difficulty of the game in terms of more body parts equals more chances for Player 2 to guess the word, thus the easier the game. Less body parts increases the difficulty of the game as it gives Player 2 less opportunities to guess letters and ultimately determine the word.
If Player 2 is able to guess the word before all body parts are drawn on the gallows, then they WIN. If Player 2 has exhausted all guesses with the fact that all body parts have been drawn represented by a hangman, then Player 2 has lost.
Player 1 and Player 2 should take it in turns to be the person who thinks of the word and the guesser.

Hangman Game Rules
Components
Object of the Game
One player thinks of a word and the other tries to guess it by guessing letters.
Each incorrect guess brings you closer to being «hanged». This game helps to sharpen children’s spelling and word-decoding skills.
Legal Words
Only words found in a standard dictionary may be used. Proper nouns, people’s names, abbreviations, slang and foreign words are not allowed.
Contractions and hyphenated words are not allowed. Spell your word correctly! You will lose the game if you misspell your word!
Game Play
The younger player goes first. On your turn: Guess a letter by calling it out to your opponent. Any letter may be selected.
If the letter you call is contained in your opponent’s word, your opponent turns the letter on top of his or her tray around so that you can read it. Your turn is over.
Note: If the word contains more than one of the called-out letters, your opponent must turn around all of those particular letters.
If the letter you call is not contained in your opponent’s word, your turn is over.
Your opponent turns the dial one space in the direction of the arrows on the dial, to reveal a more complete hangman in his or her display window.
Guessing a Word
You may, on your turn, try to guess an opponent’s word in addition to guessing a letter. Here’s how: After guessing a correct letter, announce that you are making a guess and call out the word.
If you guess correctly, you win the game. If you guess incorrectly, your opponent turns the dial one space and reveals a more complete hangman.
Alternate turns and continue playing until one player’s word is completely spelled out or guessed, or the hangman in either display window is complete.
End of the Game
If the drawing of the person is completed before the word or words are guessed, the guessing player loses. If the player figures out the word or words first, he or she wins.
