This New Instagram Feature Makes It Super Easy To Share Your Pronouns
The platform recognizes 11 sets of pronouns to choose from.
You’ve been doing it for years: taking up precious space in your Instagram bio to put “they/them” or “she/they” or whatever combo suits you best. There were so many decisions to make: do you put your pronouns at the end of your bio, or right under your name? Do you even have enough space to include them? But starting on May 11, you can now put your pronouns in your Instagram profile without actually having to put them in your bio description.
How Do You Add Pronouns To Your Instagram Profile?
This new IG update creates its own section for displaying your pronouns, and allows you to choose a wide variety of options — from she/her/hers and they/them/theirs to ze/zir/zir and xe/xem/xyr. “Add up to 4 pronouns to your profile so people know how to refer to you,” the app will prompt you. “You can edit or remove them any time.” Per a press release emailed to Bustle, the platform recognizes 11 different pronouns sets. If you use pronouns that aren’t yet options in the app, you can submit a pronoun request form here.
You can access this option by pressing “Edit profile” on your main profile page — tap the circle icon in the lower left-hand corner of your screen to get there. You’ll find the new Instagram pronoun section between your name and username. Click where it says “Pronouns” and start editing, just like you would edit your name or website info. When you’re done, you can toggle an option to only display your pronouns to your followers, rather than to everyone.
According to Instagram’s Twitter feed, people in “some countries” can access this new feature as of May 11. If it’s not available on your app yet, try updating it or restarting your phone.
Why Should You Add Pronouns To Your Instagram Profile?
Many trans, nonbinary, and queer folks think it’s important for everyone, regardless of their gender, to put their pronouns in email signatures or social media bios. “I’m a woman,” says Lúcia, 25. “But according to society, I don’t ‘look like a woman.’” Putting her pronouns on social media is “scary and vulnerable,” but also necessary so that people refer to her correctly.
With Instagram offering a dedicated space for everyone to put their pronouns in their profile, Lúcia says it’s a gesture toward normalizing who she is. “My dad has an IG account, and now whenever he wants to update his profile, he’ll see a pronoun section,” she tells Bustle. “Seemingly little things like this aren’t actually little,” she adds. “They can feel hugely validating, for me at least.”
Instagram now lets you add up to 4 pronouns to your profile. Here’s how to do it.
Twitter LinkedIn icon The word «in».
LinkedIn Fliboard icon A stylized letter F.
Flipboard Facebook Icon The letter F.
Email Link icon An image of a chain link. It symobilizes a website link url.
Instagram has added a dedicated field for users to list their pronouns on their profile.
You can choose up to four pronouns to display, which appear in gray next to your name.
Users can change or remove their pronouns at any time, and can choose whether their pronouns are displayed publicly or just to followers.
Previously, users could manually add their pronouns to either their bio or their display name.
To add your pronouns, open up your Instagram profile on the app and click «edit profile.» Click pronouns, and start typing. A list of suggestions will pop up. Each one you tap will be added to your profile, up to four pronouns.
You can only choose pronouns from this set list, though Instagram said it would continue to update this over time and encouraged people to share pronouns suggestions. Mashable said that it found 41 pronoun options on the current list.
The update is currently only available in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, but the social-media site said it planned to roll the feature out more widely in the future.
LGBTQ advocacy group GLAAD, which Mashable reported was one of the organizations Instagram consulted on the pronoun list, says using pronouns in your social media bio can normalize the sharing of pronouns and «help foster a more trans-friendly social media environment.»
The move has received praise from users, but some people on Twitter criticized the fact that Instagram only lets users choose pronouns from a set list.
«Instagram has always been a place where users can express and be themselves — and with this latest feature, Instagram is excited to normalise pronoun usage while promoting a more thoughtful community,» a spokesperson told Insider.
LinkedIn has rolled out the option for users to add pronouns to their profile, too. Unlike Instagram, LinkedIn doesn’t use a list and instead allows users to free type their choice of pronouns.
How to Add Your Pronouns to Instagram, and Why Everyone Should
You can now add your preferred pronouns to Instagram, and I highly encourage you to do so even if you feel like you don’t really need. The more people that do, the more we can normalize this behavior and make the process of sharing and accepting pronouns better for all.
As the University of North Carolina Wilmington notes :
Normalizing pronouns and using correct pronouns leads to the acceptance and de-stigmatization of individuals who “deviate” from traditionally used pronouns or pronouns that do not align with their physical appearance or gender-based name. Likewise, it takes away the assumption that pronouns are only used by Transgender individuals.
By stating one’s pronouns, the need for explanation behind an individual’s correct pronouns is eliminated, as well as the idea that a person’s pronouns can be assumed based off their physical appearance or given name. When allys of the LGBTQIA+ community take part in this practice, they signal to Queer individuals that they are an ally as well as open up the conversation for a Queer individual to share their identity back.
It takes all of one minute to set this up on Instagram, with one little caveat: You can’t do it via Instagram’s website right now, a fact I eventually realized after stumbling through various screens and not finding the option all of my friends were talking about.
To add your pronouns to your Instagram profile, simply launch the app on your iOS or Android device and tap on your profile icon in the lower-right corner. Tap on the Edit Profile link, and you’ll see a new field for your pronouns. Tap it, and you’ll be able to select up to four pronouns to feature on your profile from a pre-populated list:
Eyewear and Contacts
Grab a backup pair or a sweet new accessory with sales this entire month.
How to add pronouns to your Instagram profile so people know how to refer you
Instagram makes it easy to create one or more pronouns via a dedicated field on your profile so people know how to refer you. In this quick tutorial, you’ll learn how to use Instagram profile pronouns or create your own ones from scratch to improve your visibility on the service.
Introducing Instagram profile pronouns
Having a dedicated pronoun field is better than adding pronouns to either your Instagram bio or display name, which is what some people used to do. Instagram now lets you choose up to four pronouns that will appear on your profile for the sake of inclusion and diversity.
This feature was unveiled on May 11, 2011.
Pronouns can be added to or removed from your Instagram profile at any time. To protect your privacy, you can also choose to make the pronoun filed displayed publicly or just to followers.
The feature was unavailable to everyone at post time. Initially, the new field launched in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, “with plans for more,” as per Instagram’s announcement on Twitter.
Why have pronouns on your Instagram profile?
When having a conversation, people use pronouns to refer to someone without using their name. You can add up to four pronouns to your Instagram profile to help others refer to you.
Pronouns you add won’t be used to refer to you elsewhere on Instagram.
An Instagram spokesperson told BusinessInsider that this feature is meant to “normalize pronoun usage while promoting a more thoughtful community” through inclusion and diversity.
Follow along with our step-by-step tutorial found right ahead to learn how to add pronouns to your Instagram profile from the mobile Instagram app for iOS and Android.
How to add pronouns to your Instagram profile
To add pronouns to your Instagram profile, you need to hit the “Edit Profile” button below your profile in Instagram’s mobile app for the iPhone and Android, then choose an appropriate option. If you don’t see it yet, try again when Instagram rolls out this feature in your country.
People will now see your pronouns listed in gray text next to your Instagram name.
You can add up to four pronouns from the menu—each one you hit will be added to your profile. Instagram said it would continually update the list of terms over time. If you have pronoun suggestions of your own, you can drop them via a form on the Instagram website.
You can set your pronouns to be displayed either publicly or just to your Instagram followers.
Adjusting privacy settings for Instagram profile pronouns
To choose whether your pronouns are displayed publicly on your Instagram profile or just to your followers, you’ll need to toggle a switch available when adding pronouns.
Now only your followers will see your pronouns when they visit your Instagram profile.
Anyone who doesn’t follow you will see your profile without the dedicated pronoun field.
Instagram says the “Show to Followers Only” setting will be turned on by default for any accounts belonging to users who are under 18, based on the birthday listed on their profile.
