For the first five questions, look at a date and decide how to say it.

There is one correct answer. Some people might also say ‘Two thousand and twenty’ but that’s not an option here!

Which two ways can you say this year?

“I left the company in ’02.”

How should you say this?

Which is not a possible way to read this date?

For the next five questions, write one word in each gap.

Write one word in each gap.

“The country became independent on fifth April.”

Write one word in each gap.

“I was born February twenty-ninth, two thousand four.”

In American English – particularly in informal situations – all three of these missing words are optional; however, you should write the full, standard version.

You’re giving someone this date on the phone. How do you say it? Write one word in each gap.

For the next five questions, look at how someone says a date and choose the correct option.

“The college was founded in sixteen oh five.”

When was the college founded?

The most important word here is the preposition ‘in’!

“The ninth of the ninth, ninety-nine.”

“The fifth of the first, two thousand.”

“The sixth of April, seventeen oh seven.”

Only one answer is possible here, but it would only be incorrect in British English – not American.
In British English, the day goes first and the month second, so the eleventh of September is 11/09.
In American English, the month is first and the day second, so it’s 09/11.
In both versions of English, the 0 is optional in most situations, but it’s often required when you’re filling in a form, e.g. on a website.

For the last five questions, listen to someone saying a date – or a sentence including a date – and write a number in each gap.

The number in the first gap has two digits; the year has four!

The first two numbers are both the same. The last gap is a year with four digits.

Complete the numbers in the order day-month-year. You should write eight digits in total.

Write two digits in the first gap, two in the second gap including a zero, and four in the last gap.

A year is mentioned at the end of the sentence. Write the full year as a four-digit number.

The speaker says “I started university in September ____”. Because it’s a recent year, he doesn’t say the first half of it, but you should write all four digits.

A year is mentioned at the end of the sentence. Write the full year as a four-digit number.

The speaker say “The government has committed to reaching carbon zero by the year _____.”

1. Reading dates

Let’s start with an example date.

How can you say it? There are two common possibilities:

Both are correct, and it doesn’t matter which you use. The most important point is that the words the and of are almost never written.

If you see September 30 th written, you need to add the words the and/or of when you read the date:

You might sometimes hear native speakers read dates without the, especially in American English.

If you aren’t sure, it’s better to use the.

2. Years

How would you say these five years?

The correct answers are:

Reading years is complicated, because we need different rules for years before and after 2000.

For years before 2000, use the following rules:

For years after 2000, use these rules:

3. Short forms of dates

We often shorten years from the recent past by just reading the last two numbers of the year.

We also sometimes shorten months by using the number of the month, instead of the name.

General rules for writing and reading dates in English

First, I would like to introduce you to the rules that apply to both British English and American. Traditionally, when writing dates, the number and year are written in numbers, while the month is written in full.

The date uses ordinal numbers (first, second, third, fourth, fifth, etc.). If the day of the week is indicated in the date, it is put in first place, and then the date itself is written.

Remember that the days of the week and months are capitalized in English. For example:

Also, the pronunciation of years in English differs from the pronunciation in Russian. For example:

Since 2001, you can read in two ways:

Writing and Reading Dates in British English

Writing and Reading Dates in British English

The main difference between the British and American versions is the word order when writing or reading dates. In British English, the formula for writing dates is as follows:

The spelling of the date can vary depending on the writing format or style. You don’t have to use the and of, but if you have already decided to use this option, you should definitely write the full form. Options such as the 16th May, 2016 or 16th of May, 2016 will be considered errors. As for the commas, their use is not necessary, but in my practice of communicating with the British, I noticed that they usually put commas.

When we read a date, it is imperative to pronounce the full form using the and of. For example, Monday, 16 May 2016 reads like this: Monday, the sixteenth of May, two thousand sixteen.

How to write the date in English in words?

Imagine you were given an exercise: write the phrase «Today is March 2, 1975 AD.» Think for yourself how to correctly express it in English, and now let’s figure it out together.

What do we end up with? Let’s put it all piece by piece: «Today is the second March of nineteen seventy five AC». The preposition «of» denotes an alternative to the genitive case and answers the «who / what» questions. Accordingly: «Today is the second (what) of March.»

If you indicate the date of an event, but write the date itself in abbreviated form, then you need to put the preposition «on» in front of it. If only the year is indicated, then the preposition «in» is placed before it. An abbreviated form can be used to indicate an entire decade: 1960s or 60s. In this case, the abbreviated spelling of the decade will look like «in the 1960s». The article «the» is required to be included in both writing and speaking.

After the onset of a new century, the combination of numbers developed in such a way that now there is a second way of reading and writing the year. Let’s look at a few examples:

This technique will work until 2101. Therefore, you will have plenty of time to memorize and practice.

In English, in most cases, to pronounce the year, you need to split the number into two parts and pronounce each pair separately, without using the words «thousand» or «hundred». Numbers do not need to be put in ordinal form. The conjunction and is implied between pairs, but in speech it is often omitted.

If in the second pair of numbers in place of ten is zero, then it is advisable to use the union and or read zero as oh.

If the second pair of numbers consists of two zeros, then the date in English is pronounced a little differently: the number of the first pair is + hundred.

In pronouncing dates from the new millennium, instead of “twenty” (or “ten” and so on), the word “thousand” is used, while the second pair is read as usual.

The word year at the end of the year is often omitted, but the following option is possible:

Decade

Decade

If you need to indicate not an exact year, but a decade, for example, «sixties», then the date is built according to the same principle as in Russian: the second pair is put in the plural. For decades, it is imperative to use the definite article the. The first pair can be omitted.

Nulls are formed according to the same principle:

Days and months

Days and months

Dates in English, consisting of a day and a month, are read in two ways:

The eighteenth of April

April the eighteenth

In writing, the preposition and the article are omitted, the corresponding ending is added to the number, the comma is not put between the day and the month:

Pronunciation of times

Pronunciation of times

Reading tenses in English is relatively difficult. Usually, when the year has four digits, the first two are read as one number, and then the other two as another integer. There are several exceptions to this rule.

Years up to the first 100 years of the millennium can be read as whole numbers, even if they have four digits, or they can be read as two-digit numbers. Millenniums are always read as whole numbers, as it would be too difficult to read them otherwise. New ages are read as integers in the hundreds.

We do not use the word «thousand», at least not when we read dates for the last 1000 years.

Years with only 3 digits can be pronounced as a three-digit number, or as a single-digit number followed by two-digit years. Years in which there are only two digits are read as one number. Before you say the number of the year, you can add “the year” at the beginning to make it easier to understand, and you can also use two-digit and three-digit years in the same way. Years before 0 are always written with the acronym BC (BC), and it is pronounced like two letters of the alphabet.

Curiously, using the same rules we read street names and addresses.

Phone numbers

Probably most often we have to deal with a situation when we need to dictate a number. Phone numbers in English are read completely differently than in Russian. In Russian, we can pronounce the area code or operator code by numbers, but in the number itself we very rarely say each number, and we combine the numbers into tens and hundreds:

In English, all the digits of the number are pronounced separately, and zero is most often read as oh / oʊ /. The same numbers standing next to each other are united by the word double:

All digits of the number are pronounced in groups of three. The intonation rises after each group of numbers (as in the listing), and at the end, a descending tone is used:

If in a combination of three digits there are two zeros at the end, then we can say this:

When reading numbers of bank and credit cards and similar number series, the numbers are read in groups of four with ascending intonation, each number being named separately (as in telephone numbers):

Prices

Prices

In prices, the currency icon stands up to the price itself, and is pronounced at the end in the singular or plural (if the amount is round):

If the amount is represented by a decimal fraction, then you can indicate the currency after the whole number. Reading follows the same rules as reading decimal fractions, but the word point is not pronounced. If the whole is plural, then the currency noun is also plural:

In American English (AmE), the month is read and written first, not the number, and the definite article the is not used:

If a specific year is called, then the four-digit number is divided into two groups up to two, and each is pronounced separately, zero is oh (not zero):

The numbers in the years from 2000 to 2009 are not divided into groups of two, they are read like ordinary numbers:

Learning to write dates according to the calendar

Learning to write dates according to the calendar

We take an ordinary calendar as a basis. When writing a date in English, we first display the number, then the month, and the year. In England, a similar way of constructing a date is used. As for the American version, first the month, the day, and only then the year are indicated. For example, September 28, 2019 will be written as September 28, 2019 (UK) or September 29th, 2019 (US).

You can just use numbers, as we often do. Dots, hyphens, or / are used for separation. For example, 1.09.2019 in England will be understood as September 1, 2019. In America, a similar date will be perceived as January 9, 2019. This is an important nuance.

1. Dates in American English Format

The first thing you should know when it comes to U.S. calendar dates is how to read and write them. When it comes to dates in English, America expresses them differently than other English-speaking countries.

There are a few different ways to express dates in American English grammar, especially when speaking, but memorizing the most common way is a good starting point.

1- Typical

Most people in most situations will use the [month] [day], [year] format for both speaking and writing dates. Note that this is different from the way most countries give the date (which is [day] [month], [year]).

For example, if you’re in school and want to know the date of an important exam, you may see on the whiteboard “January [month] 28 [day], 2019 [year].”

Or maybe you ask your grandfather about an important date in his life. He may say that on March 5, 1975, he bought his current home.

2- Variations

While the above date format is pretty standard across the United States, you will, of course, encounter variations of it. The variations you encounter will largely depend on where in the U.S. you happen to be, who you spend time with, and the general environments you find yourself in most often. Here are a few of the formats for dates in English writing and speech you’re likely to come across.

How to read dates in english. Смотреть фото How to read dates in english. Смотреть картинку How to read dates in english. Картинка про How to read dates in english. Фото How to read dates in english

Again, this is most commonly used when speaking and can seem a bit long-winded. I suppose this one is best used when you want to make absolutely certain that the date you’re talking about is clear.

For example, let’s say you need someone to babysit your kids about a month from today because you have an important event coming up that you can’t miss. You can ask your babysitter (and then confirm afterward) if they’re available to babysit on Thursday [day of the week] the 14th [day] of March [month]. (Good news: They are!)

These two formats are exactly the same as the ones above, except they include the year at the end.

You would use this, for instance, if you’ve had four babysitters all bail on you within a couple of weeks. The next babysitter you call on, you’re desperate enough to include the year. You can’t miss this event. You have to make sure the babysitter is clear on when they need to babysit and that they really can do it.

So you ask if they’re available to babysit on Thursday [day of the week] the 14th [day] of March [month], 2019 [year]. And then you ask three more times to make sure. 😉

These formats, on the other hand, are more laid-back and simple. Furthermore, they’re commonly used when referring to holiday dates or similar events.

For example, you ask your friend when their birthday is. They reply, “February [month] 14th [day].”

Then you say, “Wow, isn’t Valentine’s Day also on the 14th [day] of February [month]?!”

3- Writing Dates in English

When writing dates in English, you almost always use the first format we showed you. However, there are a couple of different ways you can choose to write it:

I’ll use today’s date as an example for each of these options:

All of these are equally acceptable to use. (Note that for the day [8], I put a 0 in front. This is optional, and is just a way to indicate that it’s simply “8” and not “18” or “28.” )

2. Dates in English: Years

How to read dates in english. Смотреть фото How to read dates in english. Смотреть картинку How to read dates in english. Картинка про How to read dates in english. Фото How to read dates in english

Now that you better understand the basic formats you’ll likely see and hear while in the United States, we can go more into detail about how these dates are pronounced.

1- Rules

Years Before 2000:
Say the first pair of numbers separately, usually a “teen” number, followed by the number formed by the second pair of numbers.
(1428 = fourteen twenty-eight, 1957 = nineteen fifty-seven, 1066 = Ten Sixty-six.)

Note: There are some people who include the word “and” between the teen number and second pair of numbers. In the above examples, this would look like: 1428 = fourteen and twenty-eight; 1957 = nineteen and fifty-seven. However, this format isn’t common and is considered an inaccurate way of phrasing the year.

Years After 2000:
Up to 2009: Say it as “Two-thousand number” or “Two-thousand and number.”
(2004 = two-thousand four or two-thousand and four.)

2010 and above: Say it as “Two-thousand number” or “Two-thousand and number” or “Twenty-number.” While you may hear it in any of these formats, keep in mind that the most commonly used format is the second one: Two-thousand and ___.
(2015 = two-thousand fifteen or two-thousand and fifteen or twenty-fifteen.)

2- Saying the Years Aloud

For your convenience, here are some more examples of how this works:

Now keep in mind that I haven’t shown you all of these different formats to confuse you. It’s just important that you’re aware of them, mainly to avoid confusion in case you hear a less-used date format or one you’re not too familiar with. However, memorizing all (or most) of them can certainly help you communicate more like a native speaker.

That said, work on memorizing the “typical” format we went over before you try memorizing the others.

3- Additional Information

In the United States, there are a few terms we use to describe the passing of time relating to years. These include: year, decade, century, millennium.

A “year” is twelve months, a “decade” is ten years, a “century” is 100 years, and a “millennium” is 1000 years.

3. Dates in English: Months

How to read dates in english. Смотреть фото How to read dates in english. Смотреть картинку How to read dates in english. Картинка про How to read dates in english. Фото How to read dates in english

Now that the years are out of the way, with all their seemingly endless format options, we can move on to the simpler topics, like how to say the months in English. Some of these can be tricky to learn how to spell and pronounce, but once you have them down they’re actually pretty simple. That said, here are the month names in English as well as abbreviations for the months in English and additional info.

4. Dates in English: Days

In the U.S. calendar, each month can have anywhere from 28 to 31 days, but never more or less. Here’s a rundown of the ordinal numbers in the U.S. calendar, along with the spoken pronunciation. (Keep in mind that we also have a separate article on English numbers, in case you need to brush up on this, as well as a Numbers vocabulary list.)

Keep in mind that oftentimes, people omit the st, nd, and th when actually writing these numbers down, but the sounds remain. (For example: “1st” is simply written “1” but still pronounced first and “29th” is simply written “29” but still pronounced twenty-ninth.) In short, the dropped letters at the end have no effect on how the number is pronounced out loud.

There are seven days in the week, and each one has its own name. Further, the week is divided into “weekdays” which are the days that people normally have work or school, and “weekend days” which are days that people normally take off to relax.

Let’s go over how to say the days of the week in English:

6. Making Appointments

Now you have a basic working knowledge of how to read and say U.S. calendar dates. With this information, you can begin to effectively set up appointments. Here are a few phrases you can use (or that you may hear) when setting up appointments or other dates:

In the blank above is the date you’re talking about. Use this phrase to ask someone if a certain date works for them.

This is very similar to the above phrase, though it’s a more specific question requiring a yes or no answer. A conversation using the second phrase could look like:

These two phrases are both more open-ended questions, allowing the person you’re talking with to suggest a date themselves. This can be considered polite on your end, and suggests that you have a fairly flexible schedule.

A conversation using one of these phrases could look like:

This phrase is more commonly used when making important appointments, such as a check-up with your doctor or a dentist appointment.

A conversation using this phrase could look like:

This is a fairly informal phrase, but it can be used in a variety of situations. Essentially, this phrase is used in order to confirm a set appointment or date.

Here’s an example conversation using this phrase:

Friend: Let’s get ice cream sometime!
You: Okay… next Saturday?
Friend: Hmm… I have plans that day. How about Sunday?
You: That should work.
Friend:So Sunday it is then?

7. Phrases for Talking about Dates

We’ve gone over setting up dates and appointments, so now let’s move on to other phrases for talking about dates. Most of these involve holidays or other special occasions. Let’s take a look:

This is a fairly simple question, used to ask when a specific occasion is. For example, you may ask your friend, “When is your birthday?” and they’ll answer with their birthdate. Or, you could ask your coworker, “When is Labor Day?” and if they know, they’ll give you the date of Labor Day for that year.

How to read dates in english. Смотреть фото How to read dates in english. Смотреть картинку How to read dates in english. Картинка про How to read dates in english. Фото How to read dates in english

These are a couple more simple questions. Both are asking what the current day is. The first question is more open-ended and not very specific; if you ask someone “What day is it?” they could answer with just about anything from a day of the week, to the actual date including the year.

This question is asking if there are any happenings on a specific date (or day of the week, depending on the situation).

Thus, there are two basic variations of this phrase you could use:

This is a slightly more specific question than the one above. It’s asking whether a certain event is taking place on a date or day of the week.

Here are a couple of examples:

This phrase may come in handy for you if you plan on working in the United States. It’s asking about the date of an upcoming meeting.

An example conversation could be as follows:

You: What’s the date for the meeting?
Coworker: I think it’s on March 1.

Хронологические даты и годы в английском языке произносятся вовсе не так, как в русском. Далее разберем основные правила чтения этих числительных.

Конкретные даты (дни) и месяцы

Чтобы понять, как пишутся и читаются конкретные даты и месяцы в английском языке, приведем следующий пример:

В британском английском: 14 февраля 1996 — 14 February 1996 / 14th February 1996 (14/02/1996) — My birthday is on the forteenth of February, nineteen ninety-six.В американском английском: 25 мая 2013 — May 25, 2013 (05/25/13) — My birthday is May the twenty-fifth, two thousand thirteen.к содержанию ↑

1600 — sixteen hundred
1706 — seventeen (oh/and) six
1915 — nineteen fifteen

Круглые даты пишутся весьма своеобразно:

1500 — fifteen hundred
1900 — nineteen hundred
2000 — two thousand

2001-2009 гг. чаще читают как:

2001 — two thousand (and) one
2009 — two thousand (and) nine

C 2010 года в при чтении можно использовать два варианта:

2012 — twenty twelve / two thousand twelve

Если подчеркивается принадлежность того или иного года к эре, то используется следующая запись с аббревиатурой:

AD 67 — [,ei`di:] AD sixteen-seven — 67 год нашей эры
BC 24 — [,bi:`si:] BC twenty-four — 24 год до нашей эрык содержанию ↑

Столетия

Предлоги с датами

Предлог on используется, когда мы имеем в виду конкретный день или дату. Смотрим примеры:

on Saturday — в субботу
on the 1st of January 2018 — первого января 2018-го года

Напротив, когда мы говорим о длительном промежутке времени, используется предлог in:

in 2018 — в 2018-ом году
in summer — летом
in the 19th century — в 19-ом векек содержанию ↑

1901nineteen hundred (and) one (девятнадцать сотен и один)
1995nineteen ninety-five (девятнадцать девяносто пять)

11 нояб.

Самое первое правило, которые вы должны помнить как «Отче наш», — это мы, русские, говорим «в 1989 году». По-английски слово ‘year’ не употребляется после обозначения года. А вот до него – пожалуйста. Но тогда вам нужно запомнить выражение ‘in the year of’. Но помните, что оно характерно для официального стиля.

In the year of 1989 — в 1989 году
In the year of 2012 — в 2012 году

Общее же правило звучит так: разбиваем обозначение года пополам и читаем две получившиеся цифры.

17|45 – seventeen forty-five
19|39 – nineteen thirty-nine

По-другому обстоят дела с «двухтысячными» годами. Они читаются как обычное числительное.

2007 – two thousand seven
2013 – two thousand thirteen

Читаем даты

Возьмем одну дату для примера: 13 марта 1973 года. Как ее можно передать на письме и в разговоре?

Пишем так:Читаем так:
March 13, 1973March, the thirteenth, nineteen seventy-three
13th March, 1973The thirteenth of March, nineteen seventy-three.

И не забудьте, что с датами мы пользуемся предлогом ‘on’: on March 13, 1973.

Читаем часовое время

В английском языке существуют четкие правила, позволяющие точно сказать, который час.

К примеру, в нашем языке формат времени состоит из 24 часов и вторую половину дня после 12.00 мы говорим часто 13, 14, 15 и так далее.

В английском языке есть четкое разделение времени:

Например, табличка работы кафе может иметь вид:

Open from 7.30 am to (till) 11 pm.

Также можно AM заменить на ‘in the morning’, а PM на ‘in the afternoon’.

Are you insane to call at 4 o’clock in the morning?
The presentation will be held at 5 in the afternoon.

Если письменно все понятно, то для устного понимания (произношения) времени нужно знать правила.

Часы разделены на две части — каждая по полчаса.

Для указания времени до половины часа включительно (минутная стрелка от 12.00 до 6.00 по циферблату) употребляется предлог PAST (после):

At ten minutes past two. — В десять минут третьего. Буквально: 10 минут после двух, 2:10 или 14:10.

Для указания времени после половины часа включительно (минутная стрелка от 6.00 до 12.00 по циферблату) употребляется предлог TO (до):

At ten minutes to two. — В без десяти минут два или один час 50 минут. Буквально: в 10 минут до двух, 1:50 или 13:50.

Чтобы сказать «сейчас столько-то времени», используются безличные предложения – It’s…

It’s 10 o’clock. – Сейчас 10 часов.
It’s 4.50. – Сейчас 4.50.

Ниже 7 дней недели по-английски с транскрипциями:

⦿ Monday – /’mun.dei/ — Понедельник

⦿ Tuesday – /’tiu:z.dei/ — Вторник

⦿ Wednesday – /’wenz.dei/ — Среда

⦿ Thursday – /’thurz.dei/ — Четверг

⦿ Friday – /’frai.dei/ — Пятница

⦿ Saturday – /’sa.ta.dei/ — Суббота

⦿ Sunday – /’sun.dei/ — Воскресенье

Ударение во всех этих словах падает на первый слог, наиболее сложные по произношению Tuesday и Thursday, так что уделите им побольше времени и внимания.

Вероятно, вы обратили внимание на то, что дни недели всегда пишутся с большой буквы. Здесь еще несколько примеров:

I work from Monday to Friday. I’m free on Saturday and Sunday. / Я работаю с понедельника
по пятницу. По субботам и воскресеньям я свободен.
Our next lesson is on Wednesday. / Наш следующий урок состоится в среду.

Saturday is his favorite day of the week because he plays football. / Суббота его любимый
день недели, потому что (по субботам) он играет в футбол.
The meeting is on Thursday at 10:30. / Встреча состоится в четверг в 10:30.

We’ve got an appointment on Tuesday morning. / У нас назначена встреча на утро
вторника.

Как видно из примеров, с днями недели чаще всего используется предлог ON.

Далее – 12 месяцев года с транскрипциями.

⦿ January – /’gian.iu.e.ri/ — январь

⦿ February – /’fe.bru.e.ri/ — февраль

⦿ March – /’ma:tc/ — март

⦿ May – /’mei/ — май

⦿ June – /’giun/ — июнь

⦿ July – /giu’lai/ — июль

⦿ August – /’o:.gust/ — август

⦿ September – /sep’tem.ba/ — сентябрь

⦿ October – /ok’tou.ba/ — октябрь

⦿ November – /nou’vem.ba/ — ноябрь

⦿ December – /di’sem.ba/ — декабрь

Месяцы мы пишем тоже с заглавной буквы. К примеру:

February is the shortest month of the year, with only 28 days. / Февраль является самым
коротким месяцем года — всего с 28 днями.
They’re going away on holiday in May.

/ Они уезжают на праздники в мае.
The weather is very hot here in July. / Погода очень жаркая в июле.
It’s very cold in December. / В декабре очень холодно.

Halloween is in October. /

Несколько числительных составляют исключения: первый — the first, второй — the second, третий — the third.

Как называть даты по-английски

Теперь, когда мы вспомнили о порядковых числительных, перейдем к правилам обозначения дат в английском языке. Есть два варианта обозначения дат, причем устный и письменный варианты различаются между собой:

Теперь разберемся, как произносить год. Все года до 2000 года мы произносим следующим образом: делим четыре цифры на две части и произносим два двузначных числа, например, чтобы произнести «1975 год» мы должны сказать сначала 19, затем 75 – nineteen seventy-five.

2000 год мы переводим на английский как two thousand, все последующие годы, например, 2005 — two thousand and five. 2011 и все последующие годы произносим, как обычно: twenty eleven.

Как назвать время по-английски?

Теперь, следуя за движением часовой стрелки начнем указывать время по-английски. Если нужно указать точное время в конце предложения нужно поставить слово «o’clock» или «exactly», которые переводятся «ровно». В начале предложения всегда нужно поставить it is (it’s)

21 — twenty-one22 — twenty-two

Для того, чтобы образовать, например, число «37», нужно просто к «thirty» прибавить «seven». Это так и произносится: thirty-seven. Как вы уже обратили, наверно, внимание, пишется такое число через дефис.

При этом числительные two, three, four, five видоизменяются:
two — twenty;
three — thirty;
four — forty;
five — fifty.

С двузначными числами разобрались. Переходим к трёхзначным.

Дальше по аналогии:

300 — three hundred

400 — four hundred

123 — one hundred and twenty-three

364 — three hundred and sixty-four

Теперь немного потренируемся. Ниже приведены числа, написанные прописью. Вам нужно их написать цифрами.

Число с тысячами образуется по аналогии с сотнями.

1001 — one thousand and one

1235 — one thousand two hundred and thirty-five

3400 — three thousand four hundred

Ну а теперь настало время познакомиться с временами года (уж извините за каламбур).

Рассмотрим несколько примеров:

In winter we ski. — Зимой мы катаемся на лыжах.

In autumn the leaves on trees are yellow. — Осенью листья на деревьях жёлтые.

Как вы помните, в году двенадцать месяцев. Перечислим их и узнаем, как они звучат на английском языке.

Январь — January

Февраль — February

Март — March

Апрель — April

Май — May

Июнь — June

Июль — July

Август — August

Сентябрь — September

Октябрь — October

Ноябрь — November

Декабрь — December

Закрепим названия месяцев с помощью конкретных примеров:

My birthday is in February. — Мой день рождения в феврале.

In July we are going to the sea. — В июле мы едем на море.

Подробнее о временах в английском языке читайте здесь.

Кстати сказать, слово «месяц» по-английски будет «month».

Ну а теперь давайте изучим дни недели и даты на английском.

Понедельник — Monday

Вторник — Tuesday

Среда — Wednesday

Четверг — Thursday

Пятница — Friday

Суббота — Saturday

Воскресенье — Sunday

Надеемся, что следующая весёлая картинка поможет быстрее запомнить дни недели.

Для обозначения дат употребляются порядковые числительные.

Например, дата 11 июня 1985 года, по-английски выглядит так:

June 11, 1985

А читается эта дата следующим образом:

the eleventh of June nineteen eighty-five

Если нам нужно сказать «в таком-то году», например «в 1985 году», то на английском это можно сделать двумя путями:

1) более простым: «in nineteen eighty-five».

2) более сложным с употреблением слова year (год): «in the year of nineteen eighty-five».

Чтобы сказать дату рождения на английском или какое сегодня число, нам понадобится знать:

1. количественные и порядковые числительные
2. названия месяцев и дней недели на английском

3. предлоги, которые употребляются с различными временными отрезками.

Вот таблица числительных (такая же в статье про правила чтения дробей в английском языке, загляните при необходимости).

Названия месяцев и дней недели смотрите в таблице ниже.

Предлоги перед временем в английском следующие:

on — перед днями недели, датами, начинающимися с месяца или дня, например: on Friday, on June 5th, on 2nd August.

Итак, как прочитать дату?

Чтобы назвать год нам понадобятся только количественные числительные. Общее правило такое: год читают по две цифры вместе, например, 1860 будет — eighteen sixty.

При появлении нуля в дате, возникают исключения. Так, 1900 как читать на английском? По-другому, это девятнадцать сотен, так и читаем nineteen hundred. Как читать 2000 год на английском? Иначе, это две тысячи, так и на английском скажем two thousand.

Как читать 2001 год на английском? Two thousand one. 2007two thousand seven.

Но, если ноль всего один, возможны варианты чтения, например, 1901 как читать по английски? Либо nineteen one, либо nineteen o (читается как [ou]) one, либо nineteen hundred one.

А как читать 2010 год на английском? Здесь можно вернуться к привычному правилу читать по две цифры за раз: twenty ten, 2013 — twenty thirteen, 2014 — twenty fourteen. Либо прочитать 2010 как two thousand ten, 2013 — two thousand thirteen, 2014 — two thousand fourteen.

Еще в британском варианте английского после hundred и thousand, а так же между чисел, называемых по две, принято добавлять and, например, 2017two thousand and seventeen, 1955 nineteen and fifty five.

Число в месяце в дате называем при помощи порядковых числительных. Например, on 18th August, 1992 — британский вариант или on August 18th, 1992 — американский вариант. Полная форма включает артикль и предлог: on the 15th of January.

Как читаются даты рождения на английском?

Сказать дату своего рождения или назвать день рождения можно прибегая к одному из вышеперечисленных способов назвать день и год: I was born on the 11th of October, 1991. My birthday is (/ comes) on June 5th, 1991.

Как сказать какое сегодня число на английском?

На вопрос: What’s the date? What date is it today? Можно ответить: Today’s date is the 28th of July, 2016. Today is the 28th of July, 2016. Или Today’s date is April 26th, 2017. Today is April 26th, 2017.

Как будет нашей эры и до нашей эры на английском?

70 год н.э. — 70 AD (Anno Domini — от Рождества Христова).

In Italy we follow the British system. So today is 11th January 2018 or 11/01/2018.

Thanks for sharing! It’s so interesting to learn of the different time formats used around the world. It just emphasizes that we need to be careful, and preferably use words instead of numbers. All the best to you,Osrevinu.

There is another interesting thing the date separator. In video there are two “-” and “/”, but in my country Slovenia we use “.” as date separator and we never (except of formal documents where required) write leading zero, so 11th January 2018 in Slovenia is written as 11.1.2018 (DD.M.YYYY).

But I once have had a problem with Serbian they write spaces as date separator so “11 1 2018”.

“@But I once have had a problem with Serbian they write spaces as date separator so “11 1 2018”.“
I cant bealive….always problems with Serbian…..Serbian never ever write date in that way!

Another interesting video would be the time. You know the AM/PM confusion. Another mess is time-zones. I like using UTC+1 it means London time plus one hour.

That’s a good idea, especially because in North America there are different names for the time zones. E. g. UTC-8 is “Pacific Standard Time”, because it’s the time zone for areas bordering the Pacific Ocean. Daylight Savings Time also complicates things.

In Indian system, we usually use DD/MM/YYYY format but in some form, we are asked to write in MM/DD/YYYY format.

cool topic
11/01/2018 Russia

So nice. Thank you Teacher Rebecca

Spain, 11/01/2018: thank you so much Rebecca, I really appreciate your lesson 😉
But be careful, as there were two mistakes on the board at 5.30 of the video. The last 2 of them were wrong. They had to be 1986-01-03 (YYYY-MM-DD) and 1986-03-01 (YYYY-DD-MM).
We all make mistakes 😉

Yes, I am sorry about that. Thank you for pointing it out. I had planned to write it in a different order! In any case, I am so glad you are paying attention closely. All the best to you.

OMG! Imagine those dates were on a can of beans, you might have hurt yourself. haha!

Hello,
for this question : 3. What do DD-MM-YY stand for?

dog, monkey, yak
day, morning, yesterday
date, month, year
i think the DD is for the Day(not for date)!! 🙂

Hello. Day is used for days of the week, for example – Monday, whereas date – for data.

Thanks a lot Rebecca.it is really important to know how to read and write the date.

In kuwait we follow the British system. So today is 11th January 2018 or 11/01/2018.

Hi Rebecca I think you made a mistake in the video.
For jan 3 1986 You wrote YYYY-MM-DD equal 1986-03-01 instead of 1986-01-03 and YYYY-DD-MM equal 1986-01-03 instead of 1986-03-01

Yes, just checking that everyone was paying attention! Thank you, my friend. You are 100% right. All the best to you.

Dear Teacher Rebecca in this lesson one should practice in order to understand what is question and don’t forget the regulation for announcing the date whichhas been set for each specific country.

In France: 11/01/2018

Thank you Rebecca! You are the best!

In Brazil, today is eleven of January of two thousand and eighteen.

In Brazil DD/MM/YY;
thanks for the lesson

In Japan I usually use YYYY/MM/DD.

But generally, HY/MM/DD now.
H is stand for Heisei(an era name).

ex. H30/1/12 or H30-1-12 now.

I was confused this quiz. But it was good study for me.

Thank you, Rebecca 🙂

Thanks to all of you for sharing the date format used in your country. Look at all the variation! Just emphasizes the importance of writing out the words whenever possible. Thanks for watching, learning, and playing along! My best to each of you.

I’m very grateful for your help in your all lessons. …. in all Arabic country we write the date DD-MM-YYYY if the day or month one number write D-M-YYYY …. the Arabic write From right to left – — ex.
2018-1-التاريخ اليوم 10

I think you are now write it in Chinese form DD:.

same Italy, In Vietnam we follow British system it meant the day have format: DD/MM/YYYY. but almost computers has default date is United States because they used window system, therefore there are many mistake when you use them special Excel it part of Office

Thank you, Rebecca!

Last question of the quiz,WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE

in Latvia – dd.mm.yyyy

You have forgotten Africa miss Rubbica

In Brazil today is 13/01/2018

Thank you for your excellent explanation.

Thank you so much for your impressive explanation.

You’re perfectly right: even if it seems nothing, a wrong starting point, such as misunderstanding a date, could lead to a real disaster!
Greetings from Italy.

Macedonia DD/MM/YYYY. So today is 14/01/2018

thank you alot for flush out my confusion

Thank you very much.Interesting and usefull video. I love all your lessons.

I think there is a mistake in video about date separators. In Japan they use YYYY/MM/DD, but ISO 8601 standard explicitly states there should be dash used as date separator.

Japan: 2018/01/18
ISO: 2018-01-18

Thank you Rebecca.

In Brazil we follow the British system

Thank you. I would never think how much important to know correct date format for each country. Also, I hadn’t known about the third ISO option of date format.
In Ukraine today 17-01-2018 and 17 January 2018

Hi, in Brasil we follow the DD/MM/YYYY system. So today is 17th January 2018 or 17/01/2018. Thank you.

Thank you, Rebecca, very much for your lession. It is very useful for me. The Vietnamese date format is: DD-MM-YYYY and so the date today is written as 17-01-2018.

year, the word plus number is the best way to express the date.

Thank you very much for your comprehensive lecture. In Myanmar, we usually follow British system.

Thanks to all of you who took the time to share your comments and the date format in your country. Such an important point! I wish you all the best.

I have a question about writing the dates. Is it true that it’s perfectly acceptable to separate the items in a date by using a dot (full stop)like this:

11. February 2018 (or:)
11.02.2018

A substitute teacher told us so the other day, even though all other teachers that I’ve had before said that you don’t use dots in dates in English. Now I’m confused.

Thank you very much, also for all the other videos that you have made. They are great.

In Egypt as you mentioned we follow British system, and today’s date is 12/2/2018 – 12th Feb 2018
