Since June 2nd you are now able to request refunds for an almost every purchase you make on Steam. In this guide I’ll cover as many aspects of Steam Refunds Update as possible.
The Steam refund offer, within two weeks of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime, applies to games and software applications on the Steam store. Here is an overview of how refunds work with other types of purchases.
You are eligible to make a refund on an almost every single purchase you make on Steam, however there are some staff you should bear in mind.
In order to request a refund, navigate to help.steampowered.com – you’ll be greeted with the brand-new Steam Help Center.
Click on «A Purchase» link to continue.
After that you’ll need to select a product you need assistance with.
Gifts are marked with a little gift icon before product’s title.
On the next screen you can select what kind of problem you have with the selected product. Choose wisely – you should specify the reason why you want to refund this product.
After selecting a reason you would like to specify why do you want a refund, click on the link that says «I’d like to request a refund».
You’ll have to fill a small optional form explaining why are you refunding this purchase. In case of multiple purchases of a product, you’ll be prompted which one you are going to refund.
Once you are finished, click on the «Submit request» button.
You will be issued a full refund of your purchase within a week of approval. You will receive the refund in Steam Wallet funds or through the same payment method you used to make the purchase. If, for any reason, Steam is unable to issue a refund via your initial payment method, your Steam Wallet will be credited the full amount. How to refund a game on Steam
Valve offers consumers a very generous refund policy on purchased Steam games. If you meet their two simple requirements in their return policy, you’ll be able to get a refund without any hassle. Here’s what you need to know.
Can I get a Steam refund?
To qualify for a refund, you need to request a refund within two weeks of purchase and have played less than two hours of the game. The same is true for bundles, as well, except the total hours can’t exceed two hours for all of the games in the bundle combined, nor can any of the games in the bundle be transferred.
Pre-order purchases can be refunded at any time before the game has been released. If the game has been released, the standard rules apply: no more than two hours of gameplay, and within two weeks.
Lastly, you can also refund Steam games that you’ve gifted to someone, so long as they haven’t redeemed the game. If they have, then they can initiate the refund themselves under the two hour/two week rule, but the funds are returned to the person who purchased the gift—not the gift receiver.
How to refund a game on Steam
To request a refund, open a browser of your choice and then head over to Steam’s official support portal. If you haven’t already, go ahead and log in.
Next, click “Purchases” from the list of support options.
On the next page, select the game you would like to get a refund on.
The next screen will display the details of the transaction. Review the transaction and then click “I would like a refund.”
On the next screen, you’ll see some details about the game and when it was purchased. Click “I’d like to request a refund” again.
Next, choose your desired refund method from the drop-down menu. You can have the money refunded to your Steam Wallet or card you used to purchase the game.
Finally, select a reason why you want a refund from the next drop-down menu and then click “Submit Request.” The request will then be sent to and processed by Valve’s support team. You should hear back soon about the results of the refund request.
The issue with Steam’s refund policy
Valve undoubtedly has a very generous, pro-consumer refund policy. It allows consumers to return games within a certain period, and if they’ve played the game less than two hours, for any reason.
However, as with any good thing in life, this refund policy is sometimes exploited and has discouraged many indie developers from continuing development on games or creating new ones. Such is the case with Emika Games, a small indie game developer.

Emika Games’ Summer of ‘58 is a small horror game that takes no longer than 1.5 hours to complete (as you’ll find with many indie games). In this case, many gamers would play the game to completion, then get a full refund because they didn’t exceed the two hour limit.
It’s clear that, while Valve’s refund policy is very friendly for consumers, that’s not always the case for some developers. It’s unclear if Valve will update its refund policy in the future to protect these small studios from being exploited, but hopefully a change that works for everyone will be made sooner than later.

One of the problems with video games is that it’s hard to know if we’ll like a game until we buy it and play it. That’s why it’s a good thing that Steam, the biggest digital game retailer around, offers refunds for purchases you’re not satisfied with.
If you’re unlucky enough to experience buyer’s remorse early in your gameplay experience, Steam will painlessly return your money. All you have to do is submit a request, and the game will be taken out of your library, and your money will be refunded.
However, there are limits to how long you can have a game before returning it. To return a game, you can’t have owned it for more than two weeks, and you can’t play it for more than two hours total. If you try to return a game outside of these limits, there’s a good chance your request will be rejected.
And when it comes to the two hours of playtime, Steam counts every second the game application is open as playtime. The timer runs even when the game is minimized or paused — something to keep in mind if you’re on the fence about trying to fix the game or refund it early in your experience.
How to refund a game on Steam
To demonstrate, I’m going to purchase a copy of the game «Bad Rats» and refund it.
1. Make sure the game has less than two hours of playtime, and you haven’t owned it for more than 14 days, or two weeks. Steam will show you the time you’ve played the game for when you select it in your library.
2. At the top of the Steam app (or the top of your screen on a Mac) there should be a «Help» option. Select it, then select «Steam Support.»
3. Steam Support will list your most recently purchased games. Instead, scroll down to «Purchases» and click it, and then select the product you want to refund from the page that appears.
4. Choose «I would like a refund.» Steam will offer to either add the value of the game to your Steam Wallet, or to refund the transaction from the payment method you used.
5. Steam asks you to list a reason you’re requesting a refund. Select your reason from the drop-down box.
6. Steam will issue you a reference code, and email you with the results of your refund request. In my case, the time between Steam receiving my request and issuing my refund was 59 minutes.
If you fall outside the time frame for a refund, you can still submit a refund request for the Steam Support staff to look over. However, it’s unlikely you’ll be compensated.
