In the 1997 Quentin Tarantino film “Jackie Brown,” there is a scene in which Samuel L. Jackson pays homage to the Kalashnikov rifle.

“AK-47, the very best there is. When you absolutely, positively got to kill every [REDACTED] in the room, accept no substitutes.”

The same could be said for blunts. When you absolutely, positively need to get everyone in the room high, accept no substitutes.

But blunts are more than just the street sweeper of smoking weed. They’re a culture, an art form, a thick hit of nostalgia twisted up in a hollowed-out Swisher, an unmistakable taste on your lips and a viscous cloud of smoke that says, “I don’t know what a cannabis sommelier is, but I bet you can’t finish this by yourself.”

But what exactly is a blunt, and how can you roll your own?

What is the difference between a blunt and a joint?

By now you know what a joint is – ground cannabis flower twisted up in a rolling paper, with or without a filter or crutch. If you added in some tobacco it’s a spliff, and that’s pretty much all she wrote.

A blunt on the other hand, is a hollowed out cigar paper filled with weed. There is no filter, and no tobacco is mixed in with the herb.

They’re called blunts because of the Phillies brand “Blunt” cigars, but all types of cheap cigars will do, from Swisher Sweet Perfectos to White Owls, Dutch Masters and of course Backwoods, which may have been twisted into more blunts than any other brand over the past decade.

To borrow a line from the classic 1992 track by Redman, the legendary New Jersey rapper and co-star of “How High,” this is how you roll a blunt.

First off, here’s what you need:

How to roll a blunt: step-by-step instructions

Step 1: prepare the cigar

Take the cigar and lick in a straight, vertical line from the top to the bottom.

How to roll a blunt. Смотреть фото How to roll a blunt. Смотреть картинку How to roll a blunt. Картинка про How to roll a blunt. Фото How to roll a blunt

Step 2: cut the cigar

If you have a sharp knife or a razor blade, gently make an incision along the line you licked. If you don’t have a blade, you can use your fingernails or holding the blunt firmly in both hands, press down with both thumbs, breaking the blunt wrap at the top and then repeat as you move down the cigar.

Step 3: remove the tobacco

Once the paper is split down the middle, dump out all of the tobacco.

Step 4: sprinkle the ground weed

Holding the blunt in one hand or balancing it on a tray or a CD case – if you are suddenly in 1996 – carefully sprinkle the ground weed into the basin of the paper.

How to roll a blunt. Смотреть фото How to roll a blunt. Смотреть картинку How to roll a blunt. Картинка про How to roll a blunt. Фото How to roll a blunt

Step 5: roll the paper

Tamp the herb down some but not too much (so it won’t be too tight), then begin rolling it at one end, folding a little of the paper down around the other half and then licking it with a lot of saliva and sealing it. Repeat this step as you move down the blunt. There is no glue on the blunt wrap; it is the saliva that will stick it together.

Step 6: heat the seam

Using a lighter, run the flame up and down the wet seam, “toasting” it with the flame for a couple of seconds here or there just to dry it.

Step 7: light and smoke the blunt

How to roll a blunt. Смотреть фото How to roll a blunt. Смотреть картинку How to roll a blunt. Картинка про How to roll a blunt. Фото How to roll a blunt

Rolling a blunt can be harder than rolling a joint, not only because of the lack of glue but also because it’s a larger surface and a bit more unwieldy. Like rolling a freehand joint, it’s a bit tricky the first couple of times, but you should get the hang of it quickly.

Why roll a blunt?

Why someone would prefer to roll a blunt over other methods of getting high is maybe a more relevant question today when there is such a vast array of options with weed.

But back in say, the mid-90s? The world of weed was mainly joints, bongs, and blunts. The three camps mingled, but usually you used one method because that’s just what you always did. Maybe it was the most popular way in your social circle, maybe it was the method mentioned in every song you listened to, maybe you liked the taste or the high, or it could be just that you could buy pre-rolled blunts on the cheap and they always did the trick. Also, blunts were perfectly suited to the days of cheap, bricked-up weed that came in high quantities and was more suited to the inside of a Swisher than your Instagram feed.

But if someone were to make the case for blunts it’s mainly that they hit hard, they make a lot of smoke, and the flavor on the inhale and exhale is a full-bodied, immersive experience.

When were blunts invented?

The history of blunts is about as hazy as the inside of a Buick Grand National after two Perfectos. But theories do abound. Convincingly, WeedMaps posits that blunts originated from “fronto” whole leaf tobacco leaves brought to New York from Caribbean immigrants decades before blunts became an East Coast hip hop staple.

But what about blunt authority and cannabis icon Snoop Dogg? In 2017, he stated that he first smoked a blunt with the late Geto Boys rapper Bushwick Bill, and that “we had never seen that before.”

It’s unclear who the “we” is here, but considering that the Geto Boys’ breakout album “We Can’t Be Stopped” only came out in 1991, this would imply that blunts were still relatively new on the West Coast at the time.

There is no authoritative oral or written history on blunts, but one can make the case that they became a nationwide cultural staple in the early to mid-90s, thanks to their ubiquitousness in hip hop, especially among artists from the East Coast.

Have blunts changed in recent years?

Blunt innovation may be an overlooked area of tech reporting, but there have been some interesting developments in recent years.

Mainly, tons of companies like Backwoods and Swisher Sweets sell pre-dumped blunt wraps and leaves, which don’t require splitting or dumping out the tobacco. A number of companies also sell blunt wraps made of everything from hemp to palm leaves. These options may take away some of the ritual and the fun of blunt rolling and smoking, but they also save time and effort and can give more or less that same blunt-smoking sensation without having to ingest any tobacco smoke.

There is also the “cannagar,” which isn’t a blunt but is notable nonetheless. A cannagar is a cigar made by rolling compressed cannabis around a skewer and then wrapping it in a weed leaf wrap. A line of cannabis oil is typically used to hold the whole thing together, which can stay lit for a long time.

Another blunt innovation that may not be new is microwaving your joints. In a 2019 interview, Snoop Dogg described how he microwaves his blunts for 11 seconds before smoking it. Snoop said he does this to “trap all the ingredients,” and until a peer-reviewed study proves otherwise, we see no reason not to try it, though you’re perfectly fine without a kitchen appliance.

What is a Blunt?

A classic blunt is a roll of cannabis inside of cigar or blunt wrap of your choosing. When smoked, they create an elevated effect due to the tobacco in the leaf/wrap.

In comparison to a joint, blunts are usually larger and burn slow, making it last longer. You do not need to decarb your weed for this.

What you’ll need

Blunt Rolling Steps

Step 1: Grind Weed

Remember to grind your weed to a nice, fluffy consistency that will fill the blunt with some breathing room.

Step 2: Gut Blunt

Cut at seam from end to end, empty tobacco leaving only the leaf. Toss the guts.

Step 4: Begin your Roll

With your thumb nails facing you, use your thumbs to push the weed down in the blunt. Take your time to form the weed in the blunt by using your thumbs to push and fold on the bottom leaf closest to you, and continue by folding it under the top leaf.

Step 5: Squeeze and Tuck

Starting from one end (or the end with the filter), squeeze and push down weed, use thumbs to tuck paper from one end to the other…Remember, it helps when its fluffy, ground-up bud.

Step 6: Lick Blunt like a Joint

That’s right, lick (or use water if you’re sharing blunts and grossed out. But remember your saliva is an adhesive and will always be the most important and natural glue.)

Start to lick the top layer of the leaf as you tuck the lower layer under. Sort of like licking the glue of a stuffed envelope and sealing it without letting anything escape.

Again, continuing from the same end, tuck lower layer and stick top layer to rolled paper. Working your way down to the other end doing the same…tuck and stuff bud, secure flap top leaf over.

How to Roll a Swisher

There are many different kinds of blunt wraps, and some are easier than others to roll. Swishers are uniform, easy to split, and they’re pretty easy to roll as well.

If you’re a beginner, swishers are probably your best bet. In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to roll a perfect swisher in under two minutes!

How to Roll a Blunt in 5 Easy Steps

We’ll be using a Game wrap, but our rolling technique applies to just about every regular blunt wrap.

Before you get rolling, you’ll need:

Believe it or not, you actually don’t need a grinder if you want to roll a blunt.

In fact, I prefer to break up my weed by hand, at least when I’m rolling a blunt.

If you’re rolling a joint, on the other hand, a grinder is crucial.

Anyway, let’s get started!

Step 1: Gut the Blunt Wrap

Pay attention, because this part is important:

Unless you bought yourself a cigar wrap without any tobacco in it, you’re going to have to gut your blunt.

I’ve only smoked a blunt with tobacco in it once, and it’s never happening again – that shit is gross!

Stoner Story

There I was, trying to get high as a kite once again. I had a blunt in one hand and some Green Crack in the other (some super OG kush).

It took way longer than necessary, and I ended up ruining the blunt because I couldn’t cut it straight to save my life.

Now, keep in mind I was already 3 blunts, 2 joints, and a fat gravity bong rip deep, so cut me some slack.

Anyway, before my high ass ruined the other one, my friend (also baked) walked over, grabbed the blunt, and popped it in his splitter.

Sure, I was toasted and it probably wasn’t actually that cool, but to me, it was mind blowing. It was the best thing since sliced bread.

Moral of the story?

Blunt splitters are dank.

In any event, if you want to roll a blunt, you’re going to have to get rid of the stuff that’s already inside of the blunt wrap.

Unless you want to hate your life and look like a total noob, we highly recommend using a blunt splitter.

Blunt splitters are little tiny devices that can fit on your keychain.

All you have to do is push a blunt through it, and the blunt splits perfectly every time!

They’re super dank too because you can use them to split a blunt no matter where you are, and they’re way easier than using a knife.

Keychain blunt splitters like this insanely cheap 5-pack on Amazon come with free next-day shipping too.

I know you’ve already killed most of your brain cells by this point, but come on – this one is a no brainer.

Though it’s not as easy, you can be a broke boy and use a knife – preferably a box cutter – instead.

Sure, you won’t be Smokephisticated if you use a knife, but it’ll get the job done.

It’s much easier to roll the blunt back up with weed if you split the blunt straight down the middle.

The blunt should only have one cut down the middle, and you should do everything you can to make sure it is as straight as possible.

If you don’t have a knife or a blunt splitter, you can always use your thumbs.

Ever wonder why stoners have long nails?

They’re splitting blunts all day, and it’s easier to use your thumbs if you have nails!

The more you know, right?

Anyway, if you are using your thumbs, take your time.

It’s best to go slow and have a well-split blunt than to rush and have a cluster-fucked blunt wrap to work with.

Once the blunt is split, take your finger and brush the tobacco into the garbage. You won’t be needing it.

Step 2: Prepare Your Weed

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just throw a few big nugs in a blunt and call it a day?

Obviously, that’s not the case.

How to roll a blunt. Смотреть фото How to roll a blunt. Смотреть картинку How to roll a blunt. Картинка про How to roll a blunt. Фото How to roll a blunt

Next, you have to prep your weed for the blunt.

Although some rollers prefer to grind their weed, I choose to break up my grass by hand.

Blunts are essentially rolled in tobacco.

Unlike a joint, which is wrapped with a thin paper, a blunt wrap is a bit thicker and burns more slowly.

If you grind your weed before you roll a blunt, the weed will burn a bit too fast, especially when compared to the rate at which the blunt wrap itself is burning.

Instead, if you break up the weed by hand into tiny pieces – that aren’t completely ground, however – the blunt will burn more evenly and slowly, giving you a better high for your supply.

With the nugs in between your fingers, firmly rub them together until each bug is properly broken up.

The weed should look something like this when all is said and done:

How to roll a blunt. Смотреть фото How to roll a blunt. Смотреть картинку How to roll a blunt. Картинка про How to roll a blunt. Фото How to roll a blunt

The pieces of weed in this image are about the size of grains of quinoa, maybe a tad bigger.

Now that your blunt wrap and weed are prepared and ready to go, it’s time to begin the rolling phase!

Step 3: Fill the Blunt Wrap with Weed

This is probably one of the easiest steps when it comes to rolling a blunt.

All you have to do is lay your blunt down and open it up a bit.

Take the weed that you’ve prepared and sprinkle it in the blunt wrap.

How to roll a blunt. Смотреть фото How to roll a blunt. Смотреть картинку How to roll a blunt. Картинка про How to roll a blunt. Фото How to roll a blunt

Notice that, unlike a joint which requires you to distribute the weed lightly by the filter and gradually increasing towards the end, you distribute the weed evenly in a blunt wrap.

How to roll a blunt. Смотреть фото How to roll a blunt. Смотреть картинку How to roll a blunt. Картинка про How to roll a blunt. Фото How to roll a blunt

Joints are supposed to have a cone shape, whereas blunts are more like a uniform log.

Once you have all of your weed in the blunt, it’s time for the fourth step… which also happens to be the hardest.

I know you’re probably high af right now, but don’t screw this up – the fate of your blunt depends on it!

Step 4: Tuck The Blunt

Ah yes, it’s time for the tuck.

Perfect tuck technique is hard to come by, and it takes a while to get the hang of it.

However, like most things in life, tucking is much easier after some practice.

Begin by picking up the blunt with two hands, and rolling it back and forth a bit in your hands.

This way, you’ll make sure the weed is sitting flat in the bottom of the blunt wrap.

If some weed falls out during the process, it’s okay. That’s why we recommend buying a rolling tray.

Metal Raw Rolling Tray

Raw Rolling Tray

They’re cheap, stylish, and most importantly, they’re practical – all of the weed that falls during the rolling process is collected in one place.

I always hate cleaning up weed crumbs from my desk, as most of them end up being wasted.

Once you have the weed flat against the wrap, tuck the side of the blunt wrap closest to you over the weed and underneath of the other side, like so:

How to roll a blunt. Смотреть фото How to roll a blunt. Смотреть картинку How to roll a blunt. Картинка про How to roll a blunt. Фото How to roll a blunt

Great, your weed is in the blunt, and the closer edge should be tucked properly. It’s time to begin the last step.

You’re almost there!

Step 5: Lick, Roll, and Bake!

With the closer side of the blunt wrap tucked, lick the opposite edge that’s still popping up.

After that entire side has been licked you can finish the rolling process.

It’s pretty easy from here:

Just press the upper edge – that should be lightly coated with saliva – down over the tucked part of the blunt wrap.

If you did it right, the saliva should make the wrap stick together again.

How to roll a blunt. Смотреть фото How to roll a blunt. Смотреть картинку How to roll a blunt. Картинка про How to roll a blunt. Фото How to roll a blunt

You may have to lick the wrap a bit more as you’re rolling.

The key is licking it enough to make the blunt stick together again without drowning the wrap in spit.

When you’re finished rolling the blunt, it’s probably going to be a bit moist from your saliva.

Nobody wants to smoke a soggy doobie.

Take your lighter, and quickly run the flame back and forth across the blunt, slowly rotating the blunt to heat every side evenly.

If you’ve never heard of a weed blunt before (or maybe you’ve heard the term but aren’t familiar with it), it’s a hollowed-out cigar wrapper filled with weed. While blunts may not be as well-known or popular as joints, they offer a different flavor and a unique smoking experience. Here, you’ll learn all about rolling the perfect weed blunt, along with some handy tips and tricks on how to roll a blunt.

What You Need Before Starting Your Weed Blunt

Before you learn how to roll a blunt, you’ll want to make sure that you have all of your supplies ready to go:

How to Roll a Blunt in Less Than 3 Minutes

Once you’ve got everything you need, you’re ready to roll (literally). Let’s take a closer look at how to roll a blunt step-by-step:

Step 1: Grind the Cannabis

Rolling a weed blunt starts in much the same way as rolling a traditional joint: grinding your buds. Doing the prep work first makes the entire process go much more smoothly. With your weed ready to go in advance, the process feels seamless because there is no need to stop in the middle of what you’re doing to grind.

As we discussed earlier, you could break down your buds with your fingers, but it’s not exactly the most efficient (or clean) way to go about it. Grinders make the job easier; they provide a more consistent grind while keeping your fingers clean. Using a grinder also preserves the trichomes, which may fall off if you’re not careful when breaking your buds up by hand. If cost is a factor, you can find plenty of high-quality grinders at affordable prices.

To grind some weed for your blunt, place 1 to 2 grams of your chosen strain in your grinder. Close the lid and give it a few good turns. Just as you would want when rolling a blunt, you want the pieces of your buds small, but you don’t want to grind them into dust.

Step 2: Get & Prepare Blunt Wraps

With your cannabis nicely ground up, it’s time to obtain and prepare your blunt wraps. Again, you can use an empty paper and start from scratch, or you can take a cigar (or cigarillo) and empty out its contents. If you go with the latter, this is where your knife (or another sharp object) will come in handy. While you could break the cigar down by hand, you run the risk of tearing the wrap. A blade makes things quicker and easier. Once it’s open, dump out the tobacco inside.

Many experienced blunt smokers have found they prefer one type of wrapper over the other, and the type they choose becomes their go-to for blunt rolling. As a newbie, don’t be afraid to experiment with different types of blunt wraps to find the one you like best. Learning how to roll a blunt comes with finding out what type of blunt wrap you like.

Step 3: Wet Blunt Wrap

Next, you’ll want to moisten your blunt wrap just a bit. That makes it more pliable, and therefore easier to manipulate. You’ve got a couple of options here. One is to use your saliva. It might sound weird, but hear me out. Some people lick the wrap. While it’s not my preferred method, it works well. Your other option is to get some water and kind of “paint” it on the wrap with your finger.

Regardless of which method you choose, there’s one essential thing to keep in mind: Don’t get the wrap too wet. Too much moisture makes the wrap hard to handle, and could cause it to tear or even disintegrate. Attempting to smoke a blunt rolled with a too-moist wrap can lead to it “running” or burning unevenly. You don’t want to find yourself in these situations. You only want it damp enough so that it’s more workable. To know how to roll a blunt comes with knowing how to wet the blunt wraps just right.

Now, if you do happen to get the wrap too wet (and it happens, I’ve been there), you may still be able to salvage it. You can dry it out carefully using the flame of your lighter. Just make sure that you don’t go overboard, as you could end up burning the blunt wraps, and then you’ll have to start over with a new one.

Step 4: Fill the Weed Blunt

Your next step is to fill the blunt wrap with your ground weed. Here’s where having a rolling tray will really come in handy. Hold the wrapper in one hand and use your fingers to create a little trough. I use my non-dominant hand so that I can more easily work with my weed.

Then, carefully start filling it. Grab a pinch of your weed at a time and deposit it along the length of the wrap. Remember to watch how much you use. While you want it full, you don’t want to overstuff it. You’ll still need to be able to roll the wrap back up and seal it.

Step 5: Roll and Seal the Blunt

We’ve almost made it, but there’s still one more crucial step when it comes to how to roll a blunt. Before the weed blunt is smokeable: rolling and sealing it. To do this, carefully move the wrapper back and forth between your fingers to evenly distribute your weed throughout the wrapper. You don’t want a lumpy blunt with weak spots and bulges.

With your weed blunt a uniform thickness, bring one edge of the wrapper over your bud and tuck it under the other side. Then you’ll want to seal it with either saliva or water. If you’re using your saliva, lick the inside of the blunt wrap and press it down. Or, dip your finger in water and run it along the inside of the wrap before pressing down. Either way, the wrapper should stick to itself, encasing your weed securely inside.

Step 6: Light and Smoke

Finally, you’re ready for the last (and best) step of learning how to roll a blunt – lighting and smoking your perfectly wrapped weed blunt. But before you light up, you’ll want to “bake” it. Strike your lighter and run the flame along the seam to lock it into place.

Once you’ve baked your blunt, ignite the end of it. Pull smoke in through the other end, inhale, and enjoy!

Tips & Tricks on Rolling a Blunt

As you can see, learning how to roll a blunt is a fairly straightforward process. However, it does take a bit of trial and error to get it exactly right. I’ve learned a few tips and tricks along the way that could also help you as you get started on your journey. ‌

Types of Blunt Wraps We Recommend

As we touched on earlier, many experienced blunt smokers have their go-to type of blunt wraps. In some cases, they won’t use anything else. As a newbie, you get to explore the various options available to find which one you like best while learning how to roll a blunt. After all, what one person prefers may not be what you enjoy most.

While having options is nice, having too many can be overwhelming, and not all brands of blunt wraps are the same. Quality should be an integral part of your decision. To make things easier, we’ve put together some of the best wrappers on the market when learning how to roll a blunt. ‌

If you enjoy all things flavorful, Juicy Jay’s rolling papers offer a great option. These blueberry-flavored papers are “triple-dipped” and create a smooth, long-lasting roll. They also leave a very pleasant, yummy aftertaste, which adds a little something extra to your smoke.

Other rolling papers burn ever so slightly slower than others, allowing you to extend your smoke sessions a bit longer. This allows you more time to relax and feel the effects of your weed blunt. The Zig-Zag Ultra Thin King Size papers are perfect for facilitating such situations. Not only do they burn slower than other papers, but they’re unbleached, printed on recycled board, and use vegetable inks. In other words, you can enjoy your extended smoke and feel secure knowing you’re not inhaling anything unnatural.

Bottom Line

If you’re looking for something a bit different than the traditional joint, why not try a weed blunt? The experience of rolling a blunt and the way it feels to smoke one differs from a joint, allowing you the opportunity to mix up your cannabis consumption.

What’s more, learning how to roll a blunt is pretty easy, so people tend to get the hang of it quickly. Having all of your supplies ready to go and doing a little prep work can make the process go much more smoothly. Once you’ve ground up your bud, the rest is just following the steps of readying your blunt wraps, filling them, and sealing them. Eventually, it becomes second nature. And, who knows, you might find that you enjoy rolling a blunt more than joints!‌ Most importantly we hope after all this you can start rolling the perfect blunt.

How To Roll Blunt — A Blazing Grace

A self-made blunt is surely a superb way to savor cannabis. But they don’t teach how to roll a tight blunt in school, sadly. And smoking a poorly made one may result in:

But if a blunt is tight, you’ll get a whole caboodle of benefits. First and foremost, it has the largest dose of THT among all other weed-consuming methods. And as it burns slowly, it’ll get you high for a longer period of time than a bong or vape.

So, knowing cool ways to roll a blunt is crucial if you want to get the best out of your Golden Goat or Purple Haze. I’m going to share the popular blunt rolling tips as well as review a few trinkets that make it just a one-minute-job. Let’s roll!

Making a Handmade Blunt

Here’s how to roll a blunt easy:

And the blunt is ready! If you wonder how to roll a blunt with a Swisher Sweets cigar, the technique is basically the same. You will just need to cut it open lengthwise with a razor, disembowel the cigar from tobacco, and follow the guide from Step 3.

Now, the supplies you will need:

A grinder isn’t a must, of course. You can crush your stuff with a butter knife, scissors, etc. But nothing guarantees a steady, slow burn, like a good grinder.

One of such grinders is Kozo Best Herb Grinder. It’s good for fat and skinny blunts.

It is one of the best tools to make a blunt with. It has a hard body, crafted from an aluminum alloy. And that’s quite beneficial: Kozo won’t go rusty over time — you don’t want any particles of oxidized iron in your mash!

Besides, this type of aluminum is quite sturdy. So, if you drop it a few times, Kozo has a good chance to stay uninjured and retain its stylish, black-n-white looks.

Its blades are also praiseworthy. The grinder is armed with sharp teeth. With them, it chews even big and hefty marijuana buds like a weed-hungry piranha, providing some amazing final product.

Kozo is also quite ergonomic. It sits nicely in your palms and doesn’t take much of the pocket space. The sides have a knurled pattern that won’t let the gizmo slip out of your hands, making the priceless powder scatter all over the carpet. (The magnetic lid won’t let it happen either).

Persnickety blunt-makers will appreciate the grinder’s pollen catcher. The kief is airy and fluffy like a dandelion — all thanks to the evenly outlined teeth pattern of Kozo. What’s even better, it pops out when it’s time for some hygiene maintenance.

All in all, Kozo is one of the best grinders on the market. It has elegant looks, a pretty tough body, smart construction that requires little effort to prepare weed, and, of course, a solid pollen catcher. Beyond a doubt, it’s a must-have for rolling a nice blunt.
