Another perk? Steam Family Sharing lets you share your game library with others. Even though this feature is aimed at helping parents distribute and monitor what their kids play, it also lets you lend games to your friends. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to share your Steam library.

Protect your account by enabling Steam Guard

Here’s how to enable Steam Guard on your account with the desktop app or in browser:

1. Go to Steam’s homepage and make sure you’re logged in.

2. In the upper right corner, click your username.

3. In the drop-down menu, click Account Details.

4. Scroll down to Account Security and click Manage Steam Guard.

Enabling Steam Guard can help protect your account, even if you don’t share it.

From there, you can choose between having Steam Guard codes sent to your phone or email, or you can turn Steam Guard off entirely. You’ll also see the option to deauthorize all other computers or devices other than the one you’re currently using that might have saved your login information. Steam recommends sending Guard codes to your phone as a form of two-factor authentication.

Sending codes to your phone provides an additional level of security on your account.

Share your Steam game library

Log into your family member or friend’s computer with your Steam account to get started. You can do this from your app, here’s how:

1. In the top left corner, click Steam.

2. Select Settings (on Windows) or Preferences (on Mac) from the drop-down menu.

3. Select Family in the side menu

4. Click the box that says Authorize Library Sharing on this computer.

You can authorize library sharing in the Steam app.

Screenshot by Shelby Brown/CNET

This gives you the option to authorize any accounts that have also logged into the same computer. If no one else has, you’ll get a message saying «No other local accounts found.» After this is complete, log out of your account and your friend or family member can log back into theirs. They should now have the ability to download and install select games from your library.

You can select up to five users who can access and use your library across 10 devices that you’ve authorized. While you can’t set up Family Sharing in a browser, you can check which devices and accounts have access to your Steam Library. You can also revoke access.

Here’s how to check in the Steam app:

1. In the upper right corner, click your username.

2. In the drop-down menu, click Account Details.

3. Scroll down to Family Settings and click Manage Family Library Sharing.

4. If any accounts or devices have access that you no longer wish to, you can click Revoke under Sharing Status.

Checking in a browser is essentially the same, once you log into the Steam site:

1. Go to Steam’s homepage and make sure you’re logged in.

2. In the upper right corner, click your username.

3. In the drop-down menu, click Account Details.

4. Scroll down to Family Settings and click Manage Family Library Sharing.

5. If any accounts or devices have access that you no longer wish to, you can click Revoke under Sharing Status.

For many of us, Steam is the ultimate destination for playing, sharing, discussing, and creating games. It is an excellent gaming platform that features around 30,000 games – from AAA to indie, there are myriads of titles you can indulge yourself with. At any moment, about 3 million gamers are playing on Steam and over 14 million active subscribers are online.

This gaming client offers exclusivity to anyone who needs it. There are deals that other gamers can only dream of but that are available to those with a Steam account. Additionally, there are bonuses that only Steam members get to enjoy.

The Steam gaming client is compatible with Windows, macOS, Linux, and even mobile platforms like iOS and Android. What’s more, the Steam community is quite active, allowing gamers to get answers to their questions and solutions to their gaming problems from other players. There’s also an active support team. One only needs to sign in to start getting help with their requests.

Steam is available for users from all over the world, so your language is most likely among the supported languages. The gaming industry is booming, so Steam plans to add more options to the language list once they get translators for additional languages.

These days, popular titles are often powered by Steamworks – a set of tools and services that help game creators to reach a wider audience through distributing their titles on the Steam platform. Steam games can be shared by users through shared libraries, meaning a user can install games from another person’s library and play them on their PC.

However, there’s a catch. No more than five accounts can use the same Steam gaming library. Only one user at a time can access it, so even when users who share a library try to play different games at the same time, as long as these titles are in the same library, they will not launch. Another problem is that not all Steam games are available for sharing. We’ll discuss these and some other issues related to library sharing on Steam later.

How to Share Your Steam Library

The team of technicians at Steam are always working on something to improve processes and make gaming easier. A large part of that work relies on making sure that their games are accessible to everyone. To help families and friends save some money, Steam came up with a design that makes games sharable.

Here is how you can share games with family and friends on Steam:

I. Enable Steam Guard

Not everyone in a shared network or space understands the importance of security. As the one sharing a Steam library, you must ensure that the Steam Guard security feature is enabled and set to function. Follow the steps below to enable the Steam Guard security feature:

You can check either the Get Steam Guard codes from the Steam app on my phone option or the Get Steam Guard codes by email (will require you to re-login) option. Either of these activates Steam Guard, but obviously, there is a difference in the how part.

II. Authorize Library Sharing

After enabling Steam Guard, you can safely authorize your family members and friends to allow them to piggyback on your library. To achieve that, your friend or family member must use their device to log into your Steam account. Be prepared for some security questions. Answer these questions correctly to get the green light to add that person’s device.

Open the Settings window and select the Family tab. Go to the Family Library Sharing section, locate a checkbox next to Authorize Library Sharing on This Computer, and check it. A list of users that you can share your Steam library with will appear. Select those you want to add to your sharing list.

III. Give Permission to Play Games From Your Library

If a user wants to play a game that is in your shared library, you need to provide permission. Steam will not give automatic permission for games to be shared. This is one of the platform’s security features. To get started, the user has to sign in to their Steam account on a PC that has been authorized to access your library and enable Steam Guard. In their library, they will be able to see the games that have been added from your library. To get permission to play a particular game, the user should select it, click Play, select Request Access, confirm their PC’s name, and send the request. You should confirm this request to allow the user to play that game.

The Benefits of Sharing a Steam Library

The main idea behind making Steam libraries sharable is to let parents share their accounts with their kids. Instead of having minors create their own libraries (which opens them up to cyberbullying and other negatives), parents can assist and monitor their kids’ gaming. That said, in most cases, families and friends use Steam library sharing to bypass the process of buying games separately.

Steam library sharing comes with a lot of benefits for those who are using the same game library. There’s no need to fork out extra money for games that your friend or relative already has installed. Also, not all of us love reviewing games. When sharing a library, the only one who can review is the library owner. Everyone else using the shared library pretty much holds ‘the same opinion’ as the gaming library owner who submits their review.

For the library owner, things are easy and straightforward because there is always the option of accessing and playing their games whenever they want to. Library owners decide when they want to play, and the freeloader has to give way. However, they have the option to either end the gaming session or buy the game. The latter option lets the gamer have full rights all the time.

The Drawbacks of Steam Library Sharing

It’s only fair that we look at both sides of the coin. Let’s take a look at the limitations tied to sharing a library on Steam. One factor that tends to be a deal-breaker for many is that even though one library can be logged into from ten different computers, only five accounts can access it.

Another drawback is that without a reliable Internet connection, you cannot access shared libraries. This is something that a lot of Steam users are super-unimpressed with.

Issues around licensing agreements and Valve’s technical limitations are also worth noting. To begin with, gamers are limited to certain titles because not all games are sharable. Besides, each gamer in a family needs an account to gain access to and play games. This defeats the concept of a shared family game space.

Final Thoughts

Now you know how to share Steam games with your friends and family. However, always be cautious when doing so. Make sure that safety and security are a top priority and your friends and family members understand how Steam works and what rules should be followed when using it.

This guide will give you instructions and information on the Steam Family Sharing feature.

Steam Family Sharing provides a way to share your Steam library with other users who share the same devices as you.

Before you can use the Steam Family Sharing feature your account needs to be protected by Steam Guard.

You can learn more about how to enable and use Steam Guard here. You can also follow my guide on how to enable Steam Guard below.

Before other people sharing your computer can access your Steam library you’ll need to authorize the device and their account.

Authorizing a device can be done by opening the Steam Client and clicking on the Steam button located on the menu at the top left. Once you have the menu open click on Settings.

Mac users will need to choose Steam and then Preferences from the applications menu at the top of the screen.

From the Settings page select the Family tab.

To authorize the device you’re currently using select Authorize this Computer button.

Once authorized you’ll be able to select which Steam users you want to grant access to your library. The list will only contain accounts which have logged into Steam using that device.

From now on if an approved account logs into Steam from the device you gave authorization to they will be given access to play games from your Steam library if it’s not in use. You can return to Family tab within the settings menu at any point to view which account has been using your library and when.

Other users using an authorized device can view your library by using the filter tool near the top of their games list and selecting your username.

Steam libraries can be accessed by one person at a time across all devices. If you’re playing a game from somebody’s library and they begin playing a game themselves, you’ll receive a notification stating you have a set amount of time to exit your current session.

As the account holder you’ll always have priority access over your library.

If somebody else has used Steam on your computer and installed a game, but has not authorized the device for Steam Family Sharing, you can request access to their Steam library. Any game installed through Steam by any user will appear on your Steam library beneath their account name.

Locate one of their games and click on the Play button. You’ll then be given a prompt which will ask you if you want to request access or purchase the title for yourself. To request sharing access click on the Request Access button.

You’ll then be required to give your device a name so the person you’re requesting access from can identify it.

Once your request has been sent you’ll get a confirmation notice. The person you’re requesting access from will receive an email letting them know that you would like access to their Steam library.

Once the request has been accepted you’ll be able to access their full Steam library if it’s not currently in use. The person you requested access from will also see the device listed on their Authorized Devices screen in their Steam settings.

If you’d like to revoke access to your Steam library for one or multiple devices you can do so by visiting the Family tab within your Steam Settings.

From this screen you can choose to deauthorize the device you’re currently using by selecting the Deauthorize this Computer button. You can also choose to revoke library access to a specific account by unchecking the box next to its name on the list.

If you’d like to restrict library access from a device that you’re not currently using you can select the Manage Other Computers button. This will direct you to a Steam Community webpage where you can choose to revoke access from all of your authorized devices and accounts.

Steam Library Sharing

Being tested in the beta stage for months, Steam has finally launched Steam Family Sharing for everyone. You can easily share your library game files with your friends and family. You can also set the limitations of the system during the process.

What is Steam Family Sharing?

Steam Family Sharing is a new feature launched by Valve. It is readily available in the Steam client for everyone. It allows you to share your personal games library (the games which you have purchased/downloaded from the Steam store) with your friends and family.

There was a lot of confusion and misconception over what exactly is this feature in the beta test. Even after release, there are a ton of misconceptions still in the minds of the users. Let’s clear these up.

Steam Family Sharing doesn’t allow you to purchase one copy of the game and then share it with all of your friends. For example, you can’t purchase one game of Tomb Raider and then share it with everyone. You can’t play multiplayer using this.

So what exactly is the purpose of Steam Family Sharing? You can share your entire Steam Library (all the games) with up to 5 other Steam accounts and up to 10 other devices which are authorized on the Steam network. The reason why would you do this? Unlike letting your spouse or your roommate open your computer and play the game every time they want to, Steam Family Sharing ensures that they can play this game on their PC while also not losing access to their own games in their own library. They will also be keeping track of their own achievements in the game.

This system also has its limitation. You can’t share one game only. You have to share your entire library. Furthermore, only one device can access the game at a time so you can’t distribute these to your friends with all of them playing a single game at one instant. The account owner is always given preference. Meaning if you shared your library with a friend, you will be given preference to play rather than him.

While it is absolutely understanding to restrict the access to a single game, you can’t also access your own library while someone else is playing a game from it. Only one device can access the library at one time. It’s really frustrating that you can’t play a game like Dota while your child is playing portal on his laptop. During the beta testing, there were many loopholes present which allowed you to access libraries simultaneously using the offline mode. But after the release of the official version, the trick doesn’t work anymore.

Family Options and Family Sharing also doesn’t work well together. Of course, you can apply the restrictions game-by-game to that account but there is no method to restrict the games contained in the library you are sharing. Family Sharing shares all of your libraries in an all or nothing fashion. This can prove to be problematic that you can’t use the tools of parental control found in the family options to lock inappropriate games which you don’t want other to play from your library.

Enabling Steam Family Sharing

Setting up Steam Family Sharing is very easy. In order to set it, you have to get access to both the accounts and computers. You don’t need the password of the account you need to share your library on, you just need them to log in.

Now the person will not only his own games but also your games. The person is free to play these games as if he owned them originally. He can even track his achievements.

How to share your steam library. Смотреть фото How to share your steam library. Смотреть картинку How to share your steam library. Картинка про How to share your steam library. Фото How to share your steam library

The only time it will be apparent that the person is using Library Share is when the original user logs into his Steam account and begins to play a game. A small notification will pop up on the lower left side of the screen stating that the primary user is requesting access to the library files and they have a few minutes to save their progress and exit the game.

When in the main menu, the person will see the following entry instead of the normal play option of the game.

Reversing access to Library

Do note that if you revoke, sometimes you may have to start the procedure of adding the computer as a Library Sharer from scratch. Furthermore, Library sharing will never hinder your game progress now change any of your keys or game play.
