Ways to Stream to YouTube

When it comes to streaming on YouTube, there are three ways to do it.

How to Live Stream to YouTube Using Streaming Software

By far, the best way to live stream to YouTube is by using streaming software like Streamlabs Desktop or a desktop service like Melon’s live streaming app.

Both of these streaming services are integrated directly with YouTube. That means you can go live to YouTube from these products without having to enter a stream key. You can also enter the title and description of your stream from the software, choose which category you want to stream to, and much more.

Not to mention, by using Streamlabs Desktop, you get access to widgets that can help you monetize your stream and make it even more interactive with your viewers.

To start live streaming to YouTube using Streamlabs Desktop, perform the following steps:

Step 2: Connect Your Account and sign in with your YouTube credentials.

Step 3: After logging in, you can choose to import your settings if you already have your stream set up on other streaming software like OBS Studio or Xsplit.

Step 4: Add Your Microphone and Webcam. If you already have a webcam and a microphone connected to your computer, Streamlabs Desktop will automatically detect it here. Pick the devices you’d like to use, or you can change these devices later on.

How to stream to youtube. Смотреть фото How to stream to youtube. Смотреть картинку How to stream to youtube. Картинка про How to stream to youtube. Фото How to stream to youtube

Step 5: Add an overlay theme. There are over 250 free themes and many premium themes made by top designers in the industry. Theme overlay packages make your stream stand out and add a professional-looking touch.

Most themes will come with a stream starting soon, a live scene, a be right back scene, and a stream ending scene. Your stream now looks polished with one click!

Step 6: Choose your scene in the software. Here you can see the various scenes that came pre-packaged with the theme you choose. In this case, our theme is called “Nexus”.

How to stream to youtube. Смотреть фото How to stream to youtube. Смотреть картинку How to stream to youtube. Картинка про How to stream to youtube. Фото How to stream to youtube

When you select an overlay everything is populated for you. Most overlays come with a stream starting soon, a live scene, a be right back scene, and a stream ending scene.

Remember, when you press “Go Live,” your audience will see whatever scene is on your live tab. Use a “Starting Soon” scene to start building your audience before your actual content begins. Use a “Be Right Back” scene, in case you need to take a quick break during your stream. Use your live scene when you are ready for your audience to see and hear you.

Step 7: Add sources to your scenes. A source is something that outputs to the stream. A webcam is a source. One of the many widgets, such as a donation goal, can be a source. Capturing what’s on your screen is also a source.

How to stream to youtube. Смотреть фото How to stream to youtube. Смотреть картинку How to stream to youtube. Картинка про How to stream to youtube. Фото How to stream to youtube

To add a source, click on the plus sign and choose the source you’d like to add. There are options, like “Window Capture”, which will only display a specific window from your computer, or “Display Capture” which will display your entire screen. If you are playing video games, we recommend choosing the “Game Capture” source which will only display the game you are playing.

Step 8: Click “Go Live” and input your stream information. You can customize the title and description of your stream on this page, pick the category you want to stream to, upload a custom thumbnail, and even share your stream on Twitter.

How to stream to youtube. Смотреть фото How to stream to youtube. Смотреть картинку How to stream to youtube. Картинка про How to stream to youtube. Фото How to stream to youtube

Now click “Confirm & Go Live,” and you’ll be streaming on YouTube!

Step 9: After you’ve finished your first live stream, you will want to check the stats, how many tips you received, and viewers you had. Head to Streamlabs.com and log in to view the Streamlabs Dashboard. The dashboard is your one-stop shop to see your live streaming analytics, recent events, and latest features.

How to enable live streaming on YouTube

Live streaming is disabled on new YouTube channels by default. Here’s how to enable live streaming on YouTube:

As long as there aren’t any live streaming restrictions on your channel, you can now live stream on YouTube through a web browser or streaming encoder. If you want to use a mobile device to live stream, there’s an additional hurdle: your channel must have at least 50 subscribers.

Four ways to live stream on YouTube

You can live stream on YouTube through a:

Which avenue makes the most sense depends on your goals. Web or mobile will probably do the trick for the average social streamer, while gamers will want to opt for streaming software. Consider a hardware encoder if you’re live streaming for your business or want to make a career out of live streaming. (Businesses should also look into subscription-based live streaming platforms to get access to advanced features for monetization, analytics, and lead generation.)

How to live stream on YouTube: Web browser

How to stream to youtube. Смотреть фото How to stream to youtube. Смотреть картинку How to stream to youtube. Картинка про How to stream to youtube. Фото How to stream to youtubeThe easiest way to live stream on YouTube is straight from your web browser using a built-in or external USB webcam. (Be sure to check out our recommendations for the best webcam for live streaming.)

A webcam might meet your needs if all you want to do is share your thoughts and engage with your audience in real time. It’s also possible to live stream through your browser with a higher-end camera like a digital camcorder or DSLR. To do so, you’ll need a USB capture card to bring the video signal into your computer. Then YouTube can recognize the camera as if it were a plug-and-play webcam.

Once you’re all set with a camera, here’s how to live stream on YouTube through your web browser:

That’s it. Remember to press “End Stream” when you’re finished. YouTube will automatically upload an on-demand version of the live stream to your channel so viewers who missed it can play it back. You can see and manage all your scheduled and past live streams in the “Live” tab under “Content” in YouTube Studio.

How to live stream on YouTube: Mobile

How to stream to youtube. Смотреть фото How to stream to youtube. Смотреть картинку How to stream to youtube. Картинка про How to stream to youtube. Фото How to stream to youtubeMobile live streaming is ideal for spur-of-the-moment audience engagements and dynamic events where freedom of movement is key. Unfortunately, you’ll have to be somewhat established to do it. Only YouTube channels with at least 50 subscribers can live stream on a mobile device.

It’s also worth noting that, unless you have at least 1,000 subscribers, YouTube may throttle the number of viewers of your mobile live streams. And the recordings of any mobile streams you publish will be set to private by default. These conditions will vanish once you hit the 1,000 subscriber milestone.

Once you’ve hit the subscriber threshold, live streaming to YouTube on a mobile device is pretty simple:

Now you’re ready for some untethered live streaming. When you’re done, hit “Finish” and then “OK” to end the stream. A recording of your live stream will appear on your channel after. You can access and manage that recording and others through the “My videos” page within the “Library” tab.

How to live stream on YouTube: Software encoder

How to stream to youtube. Смотреть фото How to stream to youtube. Смотреть картинку How to stream to youtube. Картинка про How to stream to youtube. Фото How to stream to youtube

Use live streaming software if you want to share your screen (e.g., to broadcast gameplay), access extra features like live titling and overlays, or use multiple cameras. Open Broadcaster Software (OBS), XSplit, and Wirecast are just a few of your options.

Any streaming software should automatically detect any USB-based cameras connected to your computer. You can also bring non-USB video signals like HDMI into your computer using a USB capture card. Connect the capture card to your computer and the camera to the capture card and your streaming software should recognize the camera as a USB video class (UVC) device.

While the exact process of live streaming on YouTube with a software encoder will depend on the streaming software you’re using, it should look something like this:

End your stream through the streaming software once the show’s over. A recording will automatically upload to your channel so people can watch it on demand. View and manage all your current, scheduled, and past live streams through the “Manage” submenu in YouTube Studio.

How to live stream on YouTube: Hardware encoder

How to stream to youtube. Смотреть фото How to stream to youtube. Смотреть картинку How to stream to youtube. Картинка про How to stream to youtube. Фото How to stream to youtube

What’s a hardware encoder?

A hardware encoder is an appliance purpose-built for video streaming, capturing, recording – or all three.

Running your YouTube live stream through a hardware encoder offers a number of advantages over web and mobile. These make hardware encoders the best avenue for businesses shooting high-stakes events like concerts or sports games and anyone who wants to elevate the look of their live streams. While live streaming on YouTube through a hardware encoder might seem complex, the advantages of using one more than make up for the time it takes to learn how.

Essentially, hardware encoders make it much easier to produce polished, multicamera live streams that are sure to impress and engage your audience. How? A lot of hardware encoders include multiple inputs for video and professional audio so you can connect and stream HDMI and SDI cameras, laptops, tablets, XLR or TRS microphones, and more. And as dedicated devices, hardware encoders often perform better than software encoders. That’s because software encoders have to share resources with your operating system and any processes working in the background.

There’s a wide range of live streaming hardware on the market, which makes it impossible to write a definitive guide to making hardware encoders work with YouTube. For that reason, we’ll walk through how to live stream on YouTube using our Pearl encoder hardware. If you’re not using a Pearl system, we encourage you to check the user documentation for your appliance or reach out to the manufacturer.

Tutorial Outline

1. Create a new Paperspace machine

After you’ve logged into Paperspace, create a new machine.

Select the closest region

Choose a Windows template

Select Monthly or Hourly depending on how often you stream

Choose your plan:

Audio and non-graphics intensive applications (Basic): If you are streaming non-intensive applications like a code editor, an online poker game, or an audio mix etc., the Standard GPU machines (Air, Standard, Advanced and Pro) work great. In this case, you will use software encoding in OBS. You cannot run any high-end games on this tier and will not achieve quite as high bitrates as you would with GPU encoding. If this sounds like your desired setup, the Advanced plan is the most popular.

Game streaming (High Performance): If you are running graphic-intensive games like The Witcher, Overwatch etc., and want to deliver a high-bitrate stream to your viewers, a Dedicated GPU machine (GPU+, P5000, and P6000) is required. The GPU+ is ideal for mid-range games and the P5000 and P6000 are designed for maximum performance.

Choose your storage — you can increase your storage at any time in the future

Chapter 2: Live Stream Setup

Which Platform?

Of course, there are multiple platforms to choose from, and it may feel a bit overwhelming to get started. We suggest getting familiar with each before committing to one. Firstly, if you have an established community on a particular platform, it’s best to start there.

Start by creating a multistream to establish which platform gets more engagement and views.

How to stream to youtube. Смотреть фото How to stream to youtube. Смотреть картинку How to stream to youtube. Картинка про How to stream to youtube. Фото How to stream to youtube

Which platform is right for you is a personal choice, and there is no right or wrong answer. We’ll review the big players like Twitch, Facebook, and YouTube.

Platform Options Overview

Twitch is a continuously growing platform for live streams of every variety with topics that may include gaming, music, talk shows, sports, travel and outdoors, «just chatting,» food and drink, or special events. This guide teaches how to stream using the free Streamlabs Desktop software.

While you may stream directly from your PC or mobile device to Facebook, we also review the specifics of scheduling live streams and how to live stream games on Facebook.

Of course, streaming to YouTube is a popular option for many live streamers, especially gaming. YouTube allows mobile, webcam, or encoder live streaming options. We get into the details on streaming with the encoder option through Streamlabs Desktop.

Multistreaming Options

If you want to stream across all Twitch, Facebook, and YouTube, Streamlabs offers multistream functionality for a monthly or annual fee. This could help you grow your audience faster.

Create a Twitch Account

Before you start creating content, reference the community guidelines to avoid any content that could potentially get your account on Twitch and Streamlabs suspended.

Download Streamlabs Desktop

Twitch, Facebook, and YouTube allow you to use free live streaming software like Streamlabs Desktop. Download and install it on your desktop computer.

If your computer hardware cannot handle the high streaming settings, you may experience performance issues while you are live streaming. Streamlabs Desktop helps solve this issue for new streamers with the Auto Optimize feature. Like it sounds, it optimizes your settings based on your internet speed along with your computer hardware. Find this setting in your Streamlabs Desktop software under Settings > General. If you are more comfortable with the technical aspect, adjust the settings as you see fit to provide the best live streaming quality.

Streaming Quality and Resolution

Quality, high-resolution live streaming is essential to building your audience and will impact the performance of Streamlabs Desktop. Doubling your pixels from 720p to 1080p will use more computer resources but will produce a better stream.

How to stream to youtube. Смотреть фото How to stream to youtube. Смотреть картинку How to stream to youtube. Картинка про How to stream to youtube. Фото How to stream to youtube

Choosing your Encoder

There are software (x264) and hardware (NVENC) encoders. To encode videos on your CPU, use the software encoder. But the advantage of a hardware encoder like NVENC is it is a dedicated encoder in the GPU. This difference is crucial with live game streaming. So if you are concerned about game performance, this is your better option. If your video card is NVIDIA, then we recommend streaming with NVENC.

CPU Usage Settings

Your CPU usage preset is under Settings > Output. There are several usage presets under x264 (how fast the CPU encodes your videos). The default settings are «Very Fast,» delivering an ideal balance of performance and quality. Keep in mind, NVENC includes these presets: low-latency, optimal performance, and max quality. Experiment with these presets, but we suggest starting with the «Quality» preset and adjusting as you see the quality and your hardware performance.

Dynamic Bitrate

The Dynamic Bitrate feature allows Streamlabs Desktop to adjust your bitrate from your network performance automatically. By making these adjustments as needed, it prevents your video from dropping frames.

Of course, you still may experience dropped frames if your computer or internet cannot handle the set bitrates, but this improves your streaming stability and minimizes latency.

Enable Dynamic Bitrate from Settings, then select the Advanced section.

At the bottom of this window, check the box that says, «Dynamically change bitrate when dropping frames while streaming.»

How to stream to youtube. Смотреть фото How to stream to youtube. Смотреть картинку How to stream to youtube. Картинка про How to stream to youtube. Фото How to stream to youtube

Alternatively, suppose you want to adjust the bitrate manually. In that case, you can uncheck the automatic feature and add Twitch’s suggested bitrate settings for the resolution and fps you’re aiming to stream:

1080p 60fps

Resolution: 1920×1080

Bitrate: 6000 kbps

Rate Control: CBR

Framerate: 60 or 50 fps

Keyframe Interval: 2 seconds

Preset: Quality

B-frames: 2

1080p 30fps

Resolution: 1920×1080

Bitrate: 4500 kbps

Rate Control: CBR

Framerate: 25 or 30 fps

Keyframe Interval: 2 seconds

Preset: Quality

B-frames: 2

720p 60fps

Resolution: 1280×720

Bitrate: 4500 kbps

Rate Control: CBR

Framerate: 60 or 50 fps

Keyframe Interval: 2 seconds

Preset: Quality

B-frames: 2

720p 30fps

Resolution: 1280×720

Bitrate: 3000 kbps

Rate Control: CBR

Framerate: 25 or 30 fps

Keyframe Interval: 2 seconds

Preset: Quality

B-frames: 2

Please remember, everybody’s setup will be different, so make sure to play around with the settings yourself to find out what works best for you.

Widgets and Alerts

Live streaming is about engagement and interaction with your viewers. Enabling the live stream alert widget gives you the chance to connect with your audience and interact directly with your viewers in real-time. With unique on-screen alerts, it’s your best opportunity to create a great first (and lasting) impression.

The Creator Studio app uses a pen and paper icon (from the Home or Posts tab) instead of going directly to a post.

Your Computer with Streamlabs Desktop

Connect your Facebook account by selecting the Facebook option with you set up Streamlabs Desktop.

How to Schedule Lives Streams on Facebook

Instead of going live immediately, you may want to schedule a live stream. After selecting Live Video, choose the Schedule Live Video Event option in the left column. Then add an event name, date, and time plus the privacy setting for the live event.

Click Next, then Upload Cover Photo or Choose Illustration. If you opt not to add a photo, it will use your cover photo. Click Create Event.

These steps automatically create two posts: an announcement (published immediately to wherever you scheduled the event) and a live video post published when the event goes live.
