Use Microsoft Translator in Microsoft Edge browser

If you open a page written in a different language than your preferred languages in settings, Microsoft Edge will automatically prompt you to translate it.

The Translate icon appears in the address bar when you go to a web page that’s written in a foreign language. A language is considered foreign to you if it’s not included in your Preferred languages list in Settings. To add or remove languages from the list, in Microsoft Edge, go to Settings and more > Settings > Languages.

Translate a webpage in Microsoft Edge

Open a webpage in Microsoft Edge. The browser will detect the language of the page and a menu will appear asking you to confirm that you want to translate the page.

Do any of the following:

In the Translate to dropdown, choose the language you want the page translated into. The default is the language you’ve set for Microsoft Edge.

To translate the page, click Translate.

To always automatically translate from the source language, select the Always translate from [Language] check box.

To skip translation, in the list on the lower right, select Not now to skip translation or Never translate [Language] to never have the panel appear when you go to a page using that language.

Note: You can manually return to this panel later, even if you select the option to Never translate.

Inside the address bar, you’ll briefly see the status showing that the page has been translated.

If you select the translate icon in the address bar, the menu that appears also shows the status.

If you’ve set Microsoft Edge to never translate a specific language, you won’t see an automatic pop-up prompting you to translate. However, you’ll still be able to translate it manually at any time.

To translate the page into a different language:

Select the translate icon in the address bar.

In the Translate to menu, select which language you want to translate to.

Revert translated webpage back to original language

On the address bar, select the translate icon .

Select Show original.

Turn translation in Microsoft Edge on or off

By default, Microsoft Edge will automatically prompt page translations.

Firstly, Windows and Mac users who use Chrome will see the “Translate” window pop up in the top right-hand corner of the screen if they open a webpage with a foreign language.

You can select to have the page translated to Chrome’s default language or tap on three vertical dots and select “Choose another language.”

The webpage will promptly be translated into the language you’ve selected. And even if you open another website in a different language, Chrome will offer the newly chosen language.

How to Translate a Page in Google Chrome on iPad

If you’re reading something on your iPad and happen to open a page with a foreign language on your iOS Chrome app, by default, the browser will offer to translate the page.

You will be able to see this option at the bottom of the screen. A small panel will pop-up, and it will automatically detect the foreign language. Chrome will also offer an option to click on the language your browser is set to.

And if you tap on it, it will instantly translate the page. The panel will promptly disappear after that. However, if you want to translate the page to another language, you can change it by following these steps:

How to Translate Page in Google Chrome on iPhone

iPhone users can translate a page in the Google Chrome app the same way iPad users do. The mobile app browser works in the same way on both iOS tablets and smartphones.

Also, when you’re accessing this feature on a mobile app, choosing “More languages” and switching from the one Chrome offers to another is only something you can do once. Unless you change the default language in settings.

How to Translate a Page in Google Chrome on Android

Android users are not left out when it comes to having the incredibly useful feature of translating webpages. If you own an Android tablet or smartphone, all you need Chrome mobile app you can find on Play Store. Make sure it’s the updated version for optimal performance.

The steps on how to translate a page in Google Chrome on Android are nearly identical to those for iOS devices. The only difference is that instead of tapping the gear icon, you have three vertical dots on the panel at the bottom.

How to Force Translate a Page in Google Chrome

But there are times when Chrome doesn’t automatically show the translation bar when you run into a page in a foreign language. Perhaps you’ve opted out of having a translation on that language before, so now Chrome doesn’t suggest it.

Fortunately, you can force a translation. In a web browser, you’ll find the translate icon on the right-hand side of the address bar. By clicking it, you’ll see the translate bar appear just underneath. In Chrome app, both Android and iOS, that looks like this:

One of the more popular Google products is the Google Translate app. It’s available as the web version and as a mobile app. But there is also the Google Translate extension for Chrome.

You can only install this extension to your desktop web browser. It’s not available for Chrome mobile app. You can find it here and have it among your other Chrome extension in no time. There are two ways you can use this Chrome extension.

The first way is to select specific sections of text on a webpage, click on the extension, and provide the translation to Chrome’s default language. The extension will detect the language automatically.

The second way to use the extension is to translate the entire webpage, even if it’s in Chrome’s default language. On any page, click on the Google Translate extension. A small panel will appear at the top of the screen, and you can select a language from a drop-down menu.

How to Fix Unable to Translate a Page in Chrome

Whenever you have the issue of the translate feature in Chrome not working correctly, the first action should always be to refresh the page. Often, that’s all it takes, but there are instances where further troubleshooting is necessary.

If you get the “This page could not be translated” message or Chrome simply refuses to complete the translation of the page, you may be dealing with the outdated Chrome web cache situation. To fix it, you’ll have to clear Chrome’s cache and data. Here’s how:

2. How To Translate a Website in Firefox

Unlike Chrome, Firefox doesn’t have a built-in translation feature. To translate websites using Firefox, you’ll need to get started by adding a Firefox extension.

Click on the Add to Firefox button to install the extension. Next, you’ll see the Options screen, where you can select specific languages.

If you need to translate different languages, you can leave the Translate Text field set to Auto. When you’ve set your preferences, click on Save:

The next time you visit a site in a foreign language, you should be able to right-click on the text and choose Translate this page. The text should open in Google Translate, ready for you to read in your preferred language.

3. How To Translate a Website in Safari

Safari’s translation feature is in beta, and it doesn’t have as many languages available as other browsers. However, you should still be able to translate many of the web pages you encounter.

If Safari can translate a web page for you, it will display a Translate button in the Smart Search field. Since this feature is still in beta, you can use this same translation menu to report issues to Apple.

4. How To Translate a Website in Microsoft Edge

You can translate a page in Microsoft Edge using Translate for Microsoft Edge, which comes installed in the browser.

Similar to Chrome, the browser should present you with a prompt when you open a page:

The address bar will briefly show the word Translated when the process is ready.

If you would like Edge to generate a translation each time you encounter this language automatically, you can check the Always translate pages from the box.

If the popup doesn’t appear, you can also click on the Translate icon in the address bar:

5. How To Translate a Whole Website With Google Translate

If you’d like to translate an entire website at once, you can use Google Translate.

Type the URL of the website you’d like translated into the text box on the left. You should see a clickable version of the URL appear in the correct text box:

Select the target language from above the text box on the right. Once you click on the link, you should see a fully translated version of the website.

You can toggle between the translated and original versions using the button at the top right:

You can also swap between languages using this toolbar. As you can see, translating an entire website can be a quick and easy process.

6. How To Automatically Translate a Page in Chrome

If you frequently find yourself on websites in foreign languages, you may want Chrome to translate them automatically. You can enable this feature by clicking on the three dots at the top right of the browser window and choosing Settings.

From here, you can navigate to Advanced > Languages. You may need to click the arrow to the right of “Language” to see all of the options:

There are two ways to set up automatic translations. If you turn on the Offer to translate pages that aren’t in a language you read option, you’ll see a popup offering a translation whenever you visit a page that isn’t in your defined language:

If there are languages other than English that you’d prefer not to have translated, you can add those here. To do this, select Add languages. Scroll to or search for the desired language and tick the box next to it:

Click on the Save button after choosing your target languages. When you navigate to a website in any of your listed languages, you won’t get the translation popup on your screen.

7. How To Translate a Website on an Android Mobile Device

Translating a website on a mobile device using Chrome is different from the procedure for desktop devices. Instead of a popup, you’ll see a bar at the bottom of the screen with your language options.

Once you select English, you should be able to read the text:

8. How To Translate a Website on an iPhone

Next, let’s look at how to translate a site on an iPhone using Safari.

When you visit a page in a foreign language, you can click on the aA button in the address bar to open a menu. There, you should see the Translate to English option.

If this is the first time you’ve performed this action, you may receive a prompt asking you to enable the beta. Also, keep in mind that the number of languages Safari can translate from is somewhat limited compared to other browsers.

2. As soon as the page finishes opening, you should see a pop-up near the top of the screen asking if you’d like to «Translate this page?» Click «Translate.»

If you don’t see the pop-up, refresh the page. If it still doesn’t appear, the translate feature might be turned off. Here’s how to ensure it’s enabled:

1. Click the three dots at the top right of the screen and choose «Settings.»

4. In the box that’s labeled «Page Language,» select the language that the page is written in. Make sure that the «Translation Language» box is set to English, or whatever your native language is.

5. Click «Translate.»

Any foreign text on the page should now translate.

How to translate a page in Google Chrome on mobile

1. Start the Google Chrome app and navigate to a web page that’s written in a foreign language.

2. At the bottom of the page, you should see a language bar with «English» and the language the page is written in. Tap «English» to display the page in English.

If you don’t see the language bar, make sure you’re scrolled to the top of the page, or refresh the page. If it still doesn’t appear, the translate feature might be turned off. Here’s how to ensure it’s enabled:

1. Tap the three dots at the bottom right of the screen and scroll down to choose «Settings.»

2. Tap «Languages.»

3. Make sure that «Translate pages» is turned on by swiping the button to the right.

If it still won’t appear, try this:

1. Tap the three dots in the corner again, and then scroll down and select «Translate.»

2. The language bar will appear, but will likely be covered with another pop-up saying the page can’t be translated. Tap that pop-up so it disappears.

3. At the side of the language bar, tap the gear and select «Page is not in English?»

4. Select the foreign language that the page is actually written in.

5. You’ll now be able to translate at will.
