Take a deep breath.

Uninstall from Programs & Features with the uninstaller.

Reboot (or you probably can get away with killing all node-related processes from Task Manager).

Look for these folders and remove them (and their contents) if any still exist. Depending on the version you installed, UAC settings, and CPU architecture, these may or may not exist:

Check your %PATH% environment variable to ensure no references to Nodejs or npm exist.

Scenario: Removing NodeJS when Windows has no Program Entry for your Node installation

I ran into a problem where my version of NodeJS (0.10.26) could NOT be uninstalled nor removed, because Programs & Features in Windows 7 (aka Add/Remove Programs) had no record of my having installed NodeJS. so there was no option to remove it short of manually deleting registry keys and files.

I attempted to install the newest recommended version of NodeJS, but it failed at the end of the installation process and rolled back. Multiple versions of NodeJS also failed, and the installer likewise rolled them back as well. I could not upgrade NodeJS from the command line as I did not have SUDO installed.

SOLUTION: After spending several hours troubleshooting the problem, including upgrading NPM, I decided to reinstall the EXACT version of NodeJS on my system, over the top of the existing installation.

That solution worked, and it reinstalled NodeJS without any errors. Better yet, it also added an official entry in Add/Remove Programs dialogue.

Now that Windows was aware of the forgotten NodeJS installation, I was able to uninstall my existing version of NodeJS completely. I then successfully installed the newest recommended release of NodeJS for the Windows platform (version 4.4.5 as of this writing) without a roll-back initiating.

It took me a while to reach sucess, so I am posting this in case it helps anyone else with a similar issue.

Uninstall Using Apt

When you execute that command, the Node.js package will be removed, but your configuration files will remain on your system. These configuration files may be of use to you later on if you decide to install Node.js again.

An additional and optional step is to use Ubuntu’s autoremove command. Whenever an application is installed on Ubuntu 19.04, the system will also automatically install any other software that the application depends on.

The autoremove command will remove those dependencies that were added with applications (Node.js in this case) and that isn’t used by anything else in the system.

After that command finishes, that’ll remove all traces of Node.js from your machine.

Uninstall Specific Versions Using Nvm

If you used the Nvm (Node.js Version Manager) software to manage the use of multiple different versions of Node.js, you can remove a specific version with this command (replace the yellow text with your version):

Once that command finishes, that version of Node.js will be removed.

You can also use Nvm to remove the current version of Node.js being used. First, make sure the version you want to remove is the currently active version with this command:

If the version you want to uninstall is the current active version, you need to first deactivate it with this Nvm command:

Now you can uninstall that current version with the same uninstall command specified above:

And that version of Node.js will be removed from your machine.

I would recommend installing node using Node Version Manager(NVM). That saved a lot of headache for me. You can install nodejs and npm without sudo using nvm.

It is better to remove NodeJS and its modules manually because installation leaves a lot of files, links and modules behind and later this creates problems when we reconfigure another version of NodeJS and its modules.

This is all that is added by Node.JS.

Now the only thing I don’t know about is npm and what it has installed. If you install npm again into a custom path that starts off empty, then you can see what it adds and then you will be able to make a list for npm similar to the above list I made for node.

To uninstall node I followed the accepted answer by @George, as I no longer have the sources, but before doing so I ran:

/.npm directory, which I deleted manually. Honestly I don’t know if every trace of npm has been removed, but I can’t find anything else.

Note that using the curl script causes the wrong version of node to be installed. There is a bug that causes node v6.7 to be installed instead of v4.x intended by the path (../setup_4.x) used in the curl script.

I think Manoj Gupta had the best answer from what I’m seeing. However, the remove command doesn’t get rid of any configuration folders or files that may be leftover. Use:

The purge command should remove the package and then clean up any configuration files. (see this question for more info on the difference between purge and remove). The auto-remove flag will do the same for packages that were installed by NodeJS.
