What Is Google Translate?

Google Translate is a powerful free translation app that supports translations of at least 100 different languages. The app can translate content through either text or voice. You can copy and paste content, type it, write it, enter the website URL, speak into your phone or you can take a photo of the text (such as a foreign menu) and have the app translate it to your preferred language.

Another great feature of the Google Translate app is that you can save phrases and words you come across often in your phrasebook with the app. The languages supported by the app include English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Arabic, Russian, Hebrew, and Yiddish.

How Accurate Is Google Translate?

Google Translate is one of the most accurate and reliable translation programs available. The program uses machine learning, a form of AI, to continually improve their translations and add more languages. For casual use, Google Translate can be extremely effective and dependable.

However, as it is a program, the translations are not always 100%. The program cannot distinguish between some of the finer nuances of language such as symbolism, metaphors, dialects, etc. It is not recommended to use Google Translate for business documents, contracts, legal or medical information. In these cases, you would be more successful with a translation service that uses specialized native speakers.

How to Use Google Translate?

Now that there is a better understanding of the translation app, we can start looking at how to use Google Translate.

Built-in web interface

If you Google the term ‘Google Translate’, you’ll notice that the utility has a built-in web interface on Chromium-based browsers. This makes it much more convenient than going to a dedicated page. In the built-in web interface, you’ll see four basic boxes.

The two upper boxes are where you select both the input and output languages. Your input language is the tongue in which you type the word that you’re attempting to translate. The output language is the tongue to which Google Translate will translate your typed word or phrase.

If you know how to spell the word you want to translate but not which language it originates from, you can click on the source language drop-down menu and select ‘detect language.’ Google Translate will then use its vast resources to determine the language from which your word originates before it translates the word or phrase for you.

Another feature you’ll notice is the microphone icon at the bottom of the Google Translate interface. This integrates Google’s voice services, which we’ll elaborate on a little further down. There are two downsides to using the built-in interface; it only translates between 115 of the most widely-used languages, not the full Google Translate catalog.

Additionally, if you translate a complex word as I did above, you get a much more garbled result than on the Google Translate website. This is the longest word in the Afrikaans language; it contains 137 characters. And now you see there’s a reason for me hauling a monster of a word like that out for this article.

Google Translate’s web utility

If you click on the Google search result directly below the built-in utility, you’ll get to the Google Translate website. As you can see above, the interface looks relatively similar. You do have more interaction options on the website, though. You can give the translation a thumbs up or thumbs down and share the translation, in addition to options available on the browser utility, such as copying the translated text and listening to the translation if you’re not sure how it should be pronounced. This is incredibly handy if you’re learning a new language.

One glaringly obvious difference between the two utilities is that the website clearly uses a slightly different translation engine. You can see the difference between how the website translates a complex word, such as the longest word in the Afrikaans language.

The translation from the website is much shorter, more concise, and more accurate, whereas the browser utility seems to have directly translated the words it identified within the one inexplicably long word and served those up as a translation, rather than taking the smaller words and creating a context-based translation of what they mean in English.

The Google Translate app

Google Translate also has a handy application for Android and iOS mobile devices. This is by far the most convenient way to translate text and is the method that most users seem to prefer. The home interface of the app is a little different to the service’s web-based alternatives.

Google has been smart and designed each interface around the platform on which it runs, instead of trying to get the exact same interface regardless of the differences in how each platform operates. The app is intuitive and almost feels like an extension of the Material You design layout featured on Google’s Pixel devices.

You’ll see that the input and output boxes don’t change much between platforms, which makes each utility as easy to use as the last. All you need to do is select your input and output languages, and then type your input phrase. The AI-driven language processor will then translate the text into your chosen output language.

Looking at the screenshot above, you can see that there is yet again a slight difference in how the word I chose has been translated. This proves that while useful for smaller, simpler phrases, the Google Translate app may not be the most accurate in all situations.

How to Translate a Page on Google

Once in your Google search engine, you can type in Google Translate for the browser version of the app. Once you’re in the Google Translate window, you’ll have the option to type or copy text into the window to translate. Or you can click on the ‘Documents’ tab at the top of the window. This will allow you to upload a page in a variety of formats (pdf, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), and the platform will analyze and translate the content of your document.

How to Google Translate a Website

To translate a website using Google Translate is just as simple as typing the text into the box. First, you’ll need to open Google Translate. Next, copy the URL of the website you wish to translate and copy it into the translation box. You will see a copy of the URL with a link on the translated side.

Click on the link, and you’ll be taken to a new window showing the translated version of the website. At the top of the website, you’ll see the Google Translate header, which allows you to change the language if needed, as well as access to other settings.

As we touched on above, Google Translate lets you easily share translations to other apps and services. This is helpful if you need to translate something into another language during a conversation. For instance, instead of having to memorize the translation for ‘No, I do not speak German very well,’ you could simply share the resultant translation – Nein, ich spreche nicht sehr gut deutsch – directly with whichever communication app you happen to be using during your conversations.

There is but one step to sharing translations. All you need to do is hit the share icon once you’ve completed a translation. It’s that simple.

The platform you use doesn’t have much weight here, as all the associated supported platforms have a sharing feature. Although, it’s pertinent to mention that while the Android and iOS apps lists all of your installed communication apps when you select the option to share your translation, the web utility only has the option to share to email or Twitter.

There are many occasions when you might need to translate a language in this globalizing world. You might be traveling abroad and need to talk to a stranger who knows nothing about English. Or you could be reading a menu with dishes outside of your vocabulary. In these situations, Google can help you out with its various applications for both Android and iOS.

You can use the Google Translate app to translate different languages, through voice or text. You just need to type or speak into the app. You can also just point your smartphone at a sign or a menu that is in a foreign language and you can see the instant translation.

Google Assistant’s Interpreter Mode, also provides real-time translations. You can use this as you talk to someone using a foreign tongue. The Assistant automatically translates your words as you ask Google to help you with a language, hence enabling you to carry on your conversation back-and-forth with the person.

This is how you could use both, Google Translate and Google Assistant to help you translate.

Google Translate

Google Translate works on both Android and iOS. If you are using an Apple device, you can download it from the App Store, and if you are using an Android device, you will find it on your Play Store.

You can translate typed text to more than 100 languages, the images can be translated into more than 90 different languages, the bilingual conversations can be translated on the fly in 43 languages, and can draw text for translation in 95 different languages. You can save the translated words for future reference.

Also, you will find some languages can be translated even in offline mode.

Different languages like English, French, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, etc are translated.

Translate Text

Let’s imagine a situation where you want a French translation of an English phrase. Just tap the name of the current language on the top-left of the screen and choose English as the source language. Then move to the top-right of the screen and choose French as the target language. Then Tap to enter text and type the word or phrase that you want to be translated.

You can also use the stylus or your finger and write a phrase in English, one character at a time, by tapping on the pen. The app will try to predict the word as you write each character of it. Continue writing or select the predicted word if it matches.

After you have finished writing the whole phrase, Google Translate displays the translation in the target language. You can hear the translation and find out how it is pronounced using the speaker icon next to it.

Translate Images

This is a very cool feature that allows you to translate the text, into an image, captured through your phone’s camera. Just choose the correct source language and the target language that you want to translate it to. Then tap on the camera icon and aim your camera at the text that you want to be translated written in the source language.

Google Translate also allows you to translate live. Once the app recognizes the text it is easily translated to the target language and is visible on the screen.

You can scan the image using the scan icon, and then tap each piece of the text to see the translation. You can tap on the import icon to translate the photos from your phone.

Translate Speech

If your speech can be transcribed. You just have to tap the microphone icon on the top of the screen and speak the word or phrase to the app. These words are immediately transcribed into the target language. You can hear the translation using the speaker icon.

You could also just tap the Transcribe icon and start to speak. Then tap the microphone icon when you are done speaking. Now you can select and copy the transcription and paste it anywhere.

Real-Time Conversations

On Google Translate you can also carry a legit conversation back-and-forth with someone who cannot speak your language. You just have to choose the two languages and then tap on the Conversation icon. Now you can carry on the conversation automatically.

If you want to do it manually then you have to choose the language of the current speaker. But if you opt for automatic, Google automatically determines the language of the speaker.

Google Assistant

The Android devices generally have the Google Assistant pre-installed, but you can also download it from the Play Store if needed. If you want to use it on an iPhone, just download and install it from the App Store.

Its Interpreter mode support 44 different languages which include English Spanish, German, Russian, Vietnamese, Ukrainian, etc.

The Google Assistant can also be accessed on the Google Home speakers.

Translate Conversations

First, you have to launch Google Assistant and tell it the language you want to use. The command can be phrased in different ways, such as:

«Hey Google, be my Spanish interpreter.»

«Hey Google, help me speak French.»

«Hey Google, interpret from English to Russian.»

«Hey Google, Japanese interpreter.»

«Hey Google, turn on interpreter mode.»

As Google turns on the interpreter mode, it will automatically detect your language and ask you the language in which you want to translate. Then, tap on the microphone icon and say anything in your language. Google will display the translation.

The device can then be handed to the person you wish to talk to, and when they start speaking in their language, Google will automatically translate it. Their phrase will be displayed and spoken in your set language. You can continue in this manner to carry on a back-and-forth conversation.

Manual Translation

You can also switch to manual translation if there is some issue with the automatic translation.

Tap on the entry for Manual at the bottom of the screen. Then tap the microphone icon for all the speakers, one-by-one, along with their languages as they speak.

How to Translate Text With Google Translate

Translating text is the easiest and most well-supported function of Google Translate. Here’s how to translate any text you come across.

Select the name of the source language you want to translate from in the
top-left of the screen. In this example, we’re using English.

Then select the name of the destination language you want to translate to in the screen’s top-right. In this example, we’re using Spanish.

Select the field that says Tap to enter text and either type or copy and paste (press and hold) the text you want to translate into this field.

You can also use the predictive text function to help write what you want to translate quicker.

The Google Translate app will continually translate what you’re writing in the field underneath. At any time during this translation process, you can tap the Speaker icon to hear what it sounds like in your chosen translation language.

When you’re finished typing you can use the right arrow or Enter key to return to the previous screen, then if you want to copy the translation, tap the three-dot menu icon and select Share.

How to Translate Images

Translating a foreign language from an image or picture using your camera or previous images is super handy when you’re out and about. In our example, we’ll use a food menu.

Select the source language and the translation language at the top of the screen. In this example, we are using Chinese to English.

Align what you want to translate in your camera window and select Instant.

If you want to translate an image you already have, select the Import button and then locate and select the image on your device. Then skip to Step 4.

Google will translate the image on your device. It may take a moment for the translation to complete, but once it does, you’ll be able to select individual words in the image to highlight their translation.

Some languages offer live translation, but others require a saved image. To scan and save a selection for translation, select the Scan button.

How to Translate Words and Speech

Translating what you say into a different language is one of the most useful features of Google Translate when traveling or just trying to learn a new language. Here’s how to do it.

Select the source language and the translate to language at the top of the screen.

Tap the microphone icon and when prompted with a beep, begin speaking. Google will automatically translate your voice into text form.

Select the Speaker icon to hear the translation spoken back to you.

If you want to dictate what you say into a different language instead, select the Transcribe icon. Then begin speaking as before, and what you say will be translated into your destination language on screen.

Transcribing is different than dictating. When you’re dictating, you’re just using your voice instead of a keyboard or stylus to input data to be translated. When you’re transcribing, you’re creating a written output of your voice. Transcribing is especially useful if you need to send a message or write an email.

Tap the microphone and then begin speaking as before..

What you say will be translated into your destination language on screen. When you’re finished speaking, tap the microphone again to end the transcription.

How to Translate Real-Time Conversations

You can also use Google Translate to facilitate a live conversation between you and someone who speaks a language you don’t understand.

Select the source and destination languages at the top of the screen.

Select the Conversation icon.

You can manually select the speaker’s language at any one time to force the app to use that as the source or select the Auto button to allow the app to determine who is speaking at any one time.

Begin speaking. The translation of what you’re saying will appear on screen, as will a translation for any replies from the person you are speaking to. This lets you both see what’s being said in real-time.

How Many Languages Does Google Translate Support?

Google Translate can translate about 103 different languages for text translation. Although not all of them are as natural as each other, and 59 are supported offline, it covers much of the world and its most populous languages.

New languages can often be added, so you can check out the complete list of languages supported on the Google site.

How to Set Up Google Translate for Offline Use

When you’re trying to understand or communicate in a different language, Google Translate is an excellent resource. To use the app when offline, you need to download the languages you want to translate.

Download for:

Open the Google Translate app.

The language that appears in the top left is the translate from language while the language that appears in the top right is the translate to language.

Tap the translate from or the translate to language, depending on which one you want to change and/or have downloaded.

Look for the language you want from the dropdown list and tap the download arrow to the right of it.

A pop-up will appear telling you how much storage you’ll need. Tap Download to continue.

Note that not all languages will have a download button beside them, meaning that they aren’t available to download. You’ll know that a language has been downloaded if you see a checkmark icon beside it in the dropdown list.

Repeat steps three and four for all the languages you want (if there are multiple ones you want to download).

Now you can open the Google Translate app whenever you’re in an area without an internet connection and set the Translate from or Translate to language as any of the languages you previously downloaded.

Use the app as you normally would if you were connected to the internet. You’ll be able to translate text, photos, handwriting, conversations, and voice—all while you’re offline.

How to Delete Languages You’ve Downloaded

Google Translate language downloads take up a lot of storage space—particularly if you download multiple languages. You may want to delete some of your downloads when you no longer need them to help free up space. Follow these instructions to learn how.

Tap Settings in the bottom menu. On Android, you may need to tap the menu in the top left.

Tap Offline translation.

Tap the trashcan icon to the right of any of your downloaded languages to delete it from your downloads. Depending on the device you’re using, after this you may need to confirm you want to delete or remove the language.

Regularly Check for Language Updates

Google is known to release updates to its languages in Google Translate, so if you plan on keeping certain languages stored in your downloads over the long run, it’s a good idea to check your language downloads (Settings > Offline translation) and look for updates that may be available. Переводить слова и фразы можно даже с помощью обычной строки поиска Google. Если алгоритм поисковика поймет, что вы хотите перевести слово или фразу на другой язык, он первым выдаст окно Google Translate с переводом.

Причем работает это не только на стартовой странице Google, но и в адресной строке браузера, если поисковиком по умолчанию назначен Google.

Собственный словарь слов и фраз
