We’ve Overslept OR We Overslept?

Hi again, this one is a bit tricky.

Context: A man wakes up and finds out that the alarm clock is not working. He wakes his wife, saying:

a) We’ve overslept. b) We overslept.

I’d go for a) but what if the action (ie oversleeping) doesn’t have any negative effects or the effects can still be undone? Isn’t b) more appropriate in this context?

Pastsimple Hi again, this one is a bit tricky.

I’d go for a) but what if the action (ie oversleeping) doesn’t have any negative effects or the effects can still be undone? Isn’t b) more appropriate in this context?

Pieanne I’d go for the present perfect. «Look!/Wake up! We’ve overslept»: the focus is on the present result.

Yes that’s what I’ve pointed out but what if there was no real need at all to get up at the time the alarm clock had been set to?

If you say «we overslept» in such a context, your wife might ask «when did we oversleep?»

A sentence in the simple past makes sense only when your listener knows the time in which the said event happened. So «I overslept this morning» makes sense even if you utter it suddenly, but «I overslept» without any time adverbial makes no sense when it is suddenly uttered.

On the other hand, «I’ve overslept» makes sense even if you utter it suddenly without addition of time adverbials. It is because, if you use the present perfect tense, your listener knows that what you are talking about is an event happened in the immediate past.

Paco2004 If you say «we overslept» in such a context, your wife might ask «when did we oversleep?»

Since we are both in bed and I’ve just woken her she’d say «when did we oversleep?» only if she was joking.

I’m afraid we might need advice from a native speaker here.

I overslept this morning i don t know how it happened

Monday, 14 th March

I overslept this morning. I don’t know how it happened. I’m sure I A21 set the alarm last night as usual. At least, I think I did. I remember having a cup of tea, turning the TV off and putting the cat outside. Then the phone rang. It was my granddaughter, Zoe. She had been A22 appearing in her school play and she wanted to tell me all about it. I must say it sounded wonderful! I A23 regret not going, but if I went to see everything my grandchildren did, I would never have any time for myself.

Anyway, whatever the reason was, my alarm didn’t A24 go off this morning, so I was late meeting Rita for coffee. She said she didn’t mind, though, because she had a good book to read. We chatted for half an hour and then went to have a wander round the shops. Everything seems so expensive these days, or it does to those of us who have « A25 retired from work. It’s not easy living on a pension. In the end, I just bought some wool for a jumper I’m making and Rita bought a new hat.

We had A26 missed our usual bus home, so we decided to have lunch in one of those fast food places. I’d never been in one before, but Rita said she had, with her grandson. I let her order the food and we sat down to eat. Well, I’ve never had anything so disgusting in my whole life! The chips were so salty I couldn’t eat them. The other thing was like a bread roll with a beefburger and cheese on it. It turned A27 out to be a ‘special cheeseburger’, although it didn’t seem very special to me. It tasted like cardboard. I don’t think I’ll be going in a place like that again.

Tomorrow is my eldest son Darren’s birthday and we’re planning to have a nice picnic in the

countryside. I can’t believe that he’s about to A28 turn fifty. How old does that make me? Don’t ask!

Speaker A. Environmental problems are important today. People in big cities suffer from pollution but it’s partially their own fault as their cars produce huge amounts of carbon dioxide which is the main cause of pollution. The number of personal cars is rising and when they get stuck in traffic jams, the amount of gases increases several times. People will experience problems until they learn to care more about the environment than their own comfort.

Speaker В. I’ve lived all my life in the city centre and I’ve always enjoyed the city lifestyle. However, now I’m considering moving to the countryside. It’s a difficult decision but my son has started to fall ill too often. The doctors say that the polluted environment is the main reason. We live in one of the busiest streets. The traffic is very heavy there and there are often huge traffic jams. The doctors strongly recommend that we move to a healthier place.

Speaker С. I live in the suburbs. We moved there several years ago as the houses are much cheaper there than in the city centre. However I don’t want to change my job so I have to commute to the centre five days a week. A personal car is a must for me. Fortunately, my children’s school is on the way to the office and I drive them there every morning. When the classes are over, my wife drives them home — she can’t do without her car either.

Speaker D. I live in the city centre, in a historical house. I like the place very much and would never move anywhere else. Neither me nor my neighbours drive personal cars — there’s no need as living in the centre is very convenient: it takes me only fifteen minutes by bus to get to work. There are good shops and supermarkets nearby. And when I go out in the evening, I don’t have to bother about where to park my. car. Life is easier on foot.

Speaker E. I believe that city dwellers should use personal cars less if they want the environment to be healthy. I never use my car if I can get to the place by bus or train. Trains and buses come and go according to the schedule and I’m never late to work or appointments. Also, buses go along special routes and escape traffic jams. I also enjoy reading on a bus or looking through the window — it’s relaxing.

B−6: I’ve lived all my life in the city centre and I’ve always enjoyed the city lifestyle. However, now I’m considering moving to the countryside.

C−3: A personal car is a must for me. Fortunately, my children’s school is on the way to the office and I drive them there every morning.

D−5: Neither me nor my neighbours drive personal cars — there’s no need as living in the centre is very convenient

E−1: Trains and buses come and go according to the schedule and I’m never late to work or appointments. Also, buses go along special routes and escape traffic jams. I also enjoy reading on a bus or looking through the window — it’s relaxing.

dieting will end up in an eating disorder, which will cause serious stomachaches, which you mentioned you’ve already been having, heart problems, kidney problems. You may become an easy target for any infection or disease. For now, I strongly recommend the medical examination called endoscopy. You’ll swallow a small flexible camera, so we will be able to see your stomach from inside.

Doctor: We’ll have to, unfortunately. I’ll call the hospital and make an appointment for you. And I’ll let you know about the exact date and time tomorrow, OK?

Jennifer: OK. Will you call me?

Doctor: It would be better if you drop in. I want to check your blood pressure just to be sure. And now we are going to design your new diet. You must follow it.

1. What can make meals different?

2. What is special about holiday scents?

3. What is another unique charasterictic?

4. Can people smell the emotions?

5. Which scents can have a relaxing effect?

6. How can scents create memories?

7. Which aroma is widely used nowadays?

A. Nothing brings back memories like a particular smell. Whether it’s of Christmas pine, your grandma’s fresh-baked gingerbread, or cookies, the scents of Christmas are truly special. In the days leading up to this day, the house fills with the wonderful rich, spicy smells of vanilla, cinnamon and ginger coming from the kitchen, promising delights to come.

B. Some of the most pleasant scents after a hard day are vanilla, lavender, and scents with cinnamon or ginger. Each combination of aromas can influence you positively. For example, vanilla’s sweet scent can help you if you feel sad, lonely, or depressed. It is a naturally warming aroma. Cinnamon is good in case you feel tired; it also has a wonderful effect on your nerves, calming you down.

C. The ability to smell is linked to our ability to remember things. When you first smell a new thing, you connect it to an event, a person, or even a moment. As a result, later the smell of cookies might remind you of spending time at your grandmother’s house when you were a small child. When you come across the smell a second or third time, the link is already there, ready to bring out a certain mood.

D. There are certain smells we can identify from a mile away — almost as if they’re preprogrammed into our minds. One of them is vanilla. Today, vanilla is in our coffee, perfumes, tea, home products, body lotion, and everywhere! Both the scent and taste of vanilla are very strong and long-lasting. It is considered one of the most popular scents and flavours in the world.

E. Our sense of smell does 80% of the job when we taste various foods. Without a sense of smell you can’t taste the difference between an apple and a potato or a glass of juice and a cup of cold coffee. This is why, when our nose is blocked by a cold, most foods seem tasteless. Our sense of smell becomes stronger when we are hungry.

F. There are many good reasons to believe that we all have our own particular smell. Research has proved that our smell might distinguish us from others just as our face does. Our smell is as personal as our fingerprints. For centuries the police have used this phenomenon to catch criminals. Maybe one day they will use our scent too.

Kevin’s parents grew beans.

Kevin enjoyed waking up in the morning. His window looked out on the green fields around. Their house was an American farmhouse though it looked more like an English cottage. It was Kevin’s mother who had restyled the place. She came from England and wanted to have some of it in her new home.

Right, Kevin was always ready to help but not today. Some of his school friends were going to visit him and that didn’t happen very often. Living on a farm means some sort of isolation. You can’t just see some of your classmates on the street. You can’t walk around with them when you have an hour or two to spare. His mother drove Kevin to school and back every day and that was it — he spent every evening with his family. But today Max and Bob were coming and Kevin was going to enjoy his day off.

When the boys arrived, both Kevin and his father showed them around the farm. The boys were impressed when they learned how many beans the small family produced. Then the adults got busy with the barbecue and the boys went on exploring the farm land and the constructions there. Bob, who was crazy about archaeology, was absolutely fascinated with the old barn (амбар). It had never been used as a barn. Nobody had even entered it for years — the father kept some ancient farming equipment there.

With sincere interest Bob studied the old spades (лопаты), ploughs (плуги) and other ancient tools, the names of which Kevin did not know. Suddenly, Bob’s eyes sparkled: ‘Where did you get it from?’ In his hand he held something that looked like a spade but it was much smaller and the design was different.

‘I have no idea what it is,’ Kevin looked puzzled. ‘It was probably my grandfather or great-grandfather who left it here.’

‘But I suspect that it was made much earlier than your great-grandparents lifetime,’ Bob looked really excited. ‘Can I take it with me? To show it to the people in the Archaeology society?’

Kevin shrugged his shoulders. ‘I don’t think anyone minds if we take everything from here. Father would be glad to get rid of the stuff. He has always wanted to remove this barn completely but still cannot find time to do it.’

‘Do not be in too much of a hurry to do it,’ Bob gave him a wink. ‘Who knows. this ancient stuff will probably make your name famous.’

During the week, I usually wake up at 6.30 a.m. I sometimes lie in bed for five minutes but then I have to get up. Most evenings, I go to bed at about 11.30 p.m. I am usually very tired, so I go to sleep/fall asleepvery quickly. Occasionally though, I cannot get to sleep. When that happens, I sometimes manage to fall asleep at about 3 a.m., and then I oversleep in the morning. If I have a late night (≠ an early night), I try to have a nap in the afternoon. The weekends are different. On Saturday and Sunday I have a lie-in.

In the week I have breakfast at 7.30 a.m., lunch at 1.00 p.m., and dinner around 7 p.m. I also have one or two snacks, e.g. cakes, biscuits or fruit, during the day at work. As I live alone/on my own/by myself, I also have to make my own breakfast and dinner, but during the week I do not bother to cook very much. I also have to feed my two cats twice a day as well.

In the summer I have a shower in the morning, but in the winter I often have a bath instead. Sometimes I have a shave at the same time, or I shave when I have a wash and brush my teeth after breakfast. I wash my hair two or three times a week.

In the morning I leave home about 7.30 a.m. and go to the university by bus. Ittakes me about 20 minutes. My classes start at 8 a.m. We usually have two lectures and one seminar or practical. During the lecture we listen to the lecturerand makenotes. At the seminars we discuss different problems and answer the questions of the professor holding the seminar. My lunch break is about 40 minutes, so I can go to the refectoryor to the snackbar. At the end of each termwe take exams and have tests in several subjects.

During the week I usually stay in, do my home assignments and have a rest. But at the weekend I often go out, but quite often I also have friends for dinner, or friends just come round for a chator we play cards, e.g. poker or bridge.
