“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life’s about creating yourself.”
“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life’s about creating yourself.”
George Bernard Shaw
Life means something different to each one of us- how it is meant to be lived, what it’s purpose is, who is supposed to be a part of that ‘life,’ where to go, and what to do. Like the choices our parents made while raising us as toddlers, at this phase in all our lives, a majority of the choices that we make will affect how we spend the rest of our lives.
The courses we select, what school we attend, the social group we choose to hang out in, what job we occupy, the organizations we join in, and even the pictures we take can affect how our lives will roll out.
Will I be successful? Will I be happy? Am I doing the right thing? What will people think of me? Will I have time for a family? Will I make adequate money to live comfortably?
All these choices can be pretty stressful and can create a lot of worry within us, but it should not, because as my title state, “Life is not about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” Personally, I believe that this is an ideal description for college life. So many people try to find their niche, when that is not the point, God created us with this free will so we can CREATE our own niche. I have struggled with this, because I want to do and see so many things, and thus I was quite stressed out, but then I thought about it and realized, whatever I want will happen, as long as I follow MY heart, not what others believe I should do, but to base my choices on what I know, believe, and feel.
After I have come to realize all of this, I feel loads lighter, because this is MY life, not his, hers, or ours- MINE. & I am ready to create myself, and I will succeed.
Life Isn’t About Finding Yourself. Life Is About Creating Yourself.
Mindset Matters & this George Bernard Shaw’s Quote Aptly Highlights it.
L ife offers multiple choices to pick & design it the way we want. Many fail to encash that choice while a few banks on that opportunity to make a wonderful and meaningful life.
So what was different in their approach towards their life?
Many, in their quest to fit in, mold their life based on the criteria defined by society. We are conditioned to accept the trend so as to blend in it. We are made to believe that one day we will find the purpose of our life and that will allow us to fit in more properly.
Even the smallest of our choices are conditioned by the Advertisement we see, by the things we listen to or by the influencer we hear. We choose what we are conditioned to choose from.
But that is not what successful people do or believe. They don’t change or compromise their inner self to blend in but they chart their own part. They choose the ‘road less traveled’ to shape their life like they want it to be.
So, how MINDSET plays a role in all that?
By nature, all of us prefer the safe, reliable and comfortable choices. Whether it was to choose a place to sit in a classroom or to choose the career to pursue. We select what is comfortable and when we fill like something is missing, we wait to find it.
We slide into a fixed mindset and accept the way we are and the surroundings as it is. We believe that whatever we are, we will be that unless and until we find something or something will find us that will change our life for good.
We become a victim of the circumstance and continue to exist instead of living.
But not Succesful ones. They don’t just exist they live up to their full potential and some more. They are of the Growth Mindset.
Growth Mindset is described as the underlying beliefs that one has about learning and intelligence. If one thinks that they can get smarter and acquire new skills with some extra effort and time, they are bound to acquire those new skills.
Their belief/mindset guides them to new heights or new lows. If you want to explore more on the growth mindset, Carol Dweck explains it beautifully.
So, instead of waiting for something to happen, why not just go out there and make something happen.
Find your Passion.
Enhance your Skills.
Face the Unknown.
Shed away the Fear of Failure.
Bounce back after failure.
And all in all Breath in Positivity & Exhale Negativity.
Choose a life that matters to you and augments your inner-self instead of living it on the terms of others ’cause: Life Isn’t About Finding Yourself. Life Is About Creating Yourself.
(Choose what seems perfect to you as the entire words written over here highlight the cons of choosing what you are conditioned to choose and in the end, if I direct you choose one thing, then it might wash-away the entire intention of this writing.)
“LIFE ISN’T ABOUT FINDING YOURSELF. IT IS ABOUT CREATING YOURSELF.”
BY GEORGE BERNARD SHAW
The world never stops living, life never seems to cease, nor does the polemics on it. One of the very crucial issues of life encompasses this quote by the well-known playwright — George Bernard Shaw, who stated — ‘Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.’
Though the idea may not seem very hard to interpret, but we don’t realize this truth and rather confuse ourselves with the n number of other thoughts, opinions, and theories that are related.
It is essential for a man to discover his true identity, but first, he must decide on who he wants to be identified as and then build this identity and shape life on the basis of it. Our life is ours and so are the choices we make, and all these influences the final result, that is — ourselves. The decisions that are to be taken play an essential role in molding us. We are all familiar with the saying — ‘A man is what his thoughts are’, this is yet another quote that adds clarity.
Our goal in life is to be someone better than who we are now and we need to channelize our thoughts and efforts in the right direction, as our life, our future, is in our hands and our minds, we must create ourselves to be who we want to be. We cannot LEAVE everything to be how it’s meant to be;
sometimes we need to MAKE it a particular way in which it can mean better. Figuratively, it is not about letting the canoe go with the flow; it is about paddling it in the right direction, regardless of the flow.
Creating one’s own character is one’s own job, it requires hard work, dedication, and most importantly a stable idea which one is to work upon. Our conclusions depend on the effective measure that we apply to our causes.
At this point in life, you might know who you are but are you the best that you can be? This is important because we need to keep working on a ‘better us’; hence a man’s personality is always under construction.
We are not limited to who WE CAN BE, rather we must work for — CAN WE BE …?
Your thoughts and efforts are the potter’s wheel and your life is the muck, the muck is what has been and after spinning on the wheel into the pot, it is made into what it can be. Thus, life is not about just finding yourself, rather going the extra mile to create yourself!
Ultimately, the real success and happiness of life lay in the justice we do to our mind and soul.
“Life isn’t about Finding Yourself. Life is about CREATING Yourself.”
The title of this post is a George Bernard Shaw quote I employ with my daughters in the hopes I will impress upon them, in a small way with a few words, what I will say here with many more words than their attention spans will allow. How many times have you heard that some person or other is on a quest to “find themselves?” Many times we hear it in relation to a young person starting out in life to find their purpose, or when an older person jokes about what they want to be when they “grow up.”
However, the older I get and the more experiences I have and relationships I develop, the more convinced I am that each individual’s purpose in life is to draw their own map. Throw out the recipe book, the paint-by-numbers kit, and anything anyone ever told you about who or what you should be—and chart your own course.
It’s not easy—and it’s not comfortable. We are trained from birth to make safe, reliable choices. In school we are encouraged to conform and not to color outside the lines; in business we are comforted by “blueprints” and case studies; the media shows us how we should dress, where to vacation, and who we should emulate.
Think about it. The last time you went to the store to look for something in particular, what was your motivation? Did you see an ad for it somewhere? Have you chosen a vacation spot because so-and-so went there and raved about the good time they had? When you think about those experiences, did you feel a little “let down?” Was the build-up of what you expected not quite what you thought it would be in the end?
On the other hand, when you remember a time you went off the map and did something completely new, how did that feel by comparison? I’ll be willing to bet that it was a much more satisfying experience—maybe even exhilarating! It wasn’t easy, you had to put more in, but you got more out. Maybe it’s time for you to be the one charting a course that others will follow.
When we were kids we intuitively leaned in the direction of creation. Making mud pies, finger painting and exploring was a lot more satisfying than playing with a toy, wasn’t it? We were charting our own courses, creating something new, and finding out more about ourselves. In fact, kids can teach us a lot about the creative process (see the 12 Most Important Lessons We Can Learn from Children).
It’s the uncharted experiences, not the guided tours, which truly help us “create” ourselves. When we listen to the inner nudge to do something different and go in a way that intuition leads us—follow our dreams and desires rather than in someone else’s footsteps—those are the moments that define who we are and give us insight into how we can participate in the world around us. We shouldn’t lose sight of that.
So as you look ahead to the coming year, instead of trying to “find yourself” by following what others have done, dust off one of the dreams you’ve kept locked away—one that makes your heart sing with anticipation—and just for fun, plot out a plan to make it happen.
Dreaming is an act of creation, and it’s the wellspring of innovation. So don’t stifle your inner creator; feed it, and open yourself to new possibilities.
“Cherish your visions and your dreams, as they are the children of your soul; the blueprints of your ultimate achievements.”
Life isn t about finding yourself life is about creating yourself
生き方とは探すものではない、自分自身で作るものだ。
(I understand «life» as a way of life.)
It is a nice phrase. I like it.
