Crimea, Gaza, Islamic State, Ebola – in 2014, one crisis after another swept over the world. And what will 2015 bring? Forecasts are notoriously tricky. However, some things can be predicted – at least with a high degree of certainty.

In Russia, a complete digital inventory of Orthodox churches and monasteries still in ruins is underway. The supreme church council of the Russian Orthodox Church had passed a corresponding resolution in April.
“Policy of small pinpricks”
Union faction leader Volker Kauder is currently in Malaysia for talks with the political leadership and religious representatives. Previously he visited Indonesia. In interview, he calls for Europeans’ foreign policy to consistently support fundamental rights of religious minorities.
CBA: Mr. Kauder, what impression did you get of religious freedom in Malaysia during your talks??
Kauder: Prime Minister Najib Razak ared us that attacks and assaults on Christians would be strictly prosecuted by the judiciary. Only recently, he says, have some perpetrators been convicted. He says the government attaches importance to religious minorities being able to live their faith as well. But among church representatives and non-governmental organizations, the accounts are more sobering.
CBA: To what extent?
Kauder: Several interlocutors described there – literally – a policy of small pinpricks. One or the other of these has also come to our attention in connection with the interim ban on translating «God» as «Allah» in a Christian publication. Christians described to us that they are not given space for cemeteries, that they face similar difficulties even in their limited social activities, and that they are not allowed to advertise openly.
CBA: These problems were also addressed by official representatives?
Kauder: Kuala Lumpur’s Archbishop Murphy Pakiam said: One tries to come to terms – but one does not make a step forward. This account was solidified in our other conversations. The ban on open religious advertising for Christians, the punitive ban on Muslims changing their religion – both show that there are problematic tendencies in Malaysia to curtail the rights of religious minorities.
CBA: Malaysia to elect new parliament in two years. Last time out, an Islamic opposition party that backs Sharia law made significant gains…
Kauder: In recent days, we have learned – in Malaysia as in Indonesia – how important economic development is to curb religious extremism. People benefit from economic growth. This is what you have to work on. Then there is no need to fear the rise of radical forces.
CBA: Do you have the impression that the EU bodies on the ground care enough about human rights and religious freedom?
Kauder: The EU, but above all the entire foreign policy of European states, including Germany, should raise these ies at every opportunity in all countries with religious minorities and encourage governments to promote religious freedom. It should not be primarily a matter of accusations. I am grateful that Foreign Minister Westerwelle is also making this an ie. But above all, one thing must be clear: Christians in Europe are closely monitoring the situation of their brothers and sisters in faith. We have a duty to show solidarity in this process. That means not only donations. But one can also express one’s concern once in a letter to an ambassador in Berlin.Interview: Christoph Strack

“Not a real union”
In the collective bargaining dispute over train drivers at Deutsche Bahn, which has been going on for months, the fronts remain hardened. This Friday, rail travelers will again have to endure a long wait because of the strike, which will last until Saturday night 2.00 o’clock limited strike with massive obstructions in the local and long-distance traffic expect. Reactions to the strike remain divided. A church representative has now voiced massive criticism.
The rail strike also meets with criticism from the church
The walkout of the train drivers’ union GDL seems to be about «special interests that are to be enforced thanks to a position of power,» said the president of the Protestant Church of Westphalia, Alfred Bub, in an epd interview. In the view of the German Federation of Trade Unions, the GDL is «not a real trade union, but rather a syndicate that takes advantage of the fact that it is in the driver’s seat and can paralyze the economy and traffic,» Bub said. In principle, however, a strike for fair wages is a legitimate means, stressed the representative of about 2.7 million protesters.

Meeting “at eye level
After the talks between Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg and Bishop Margot Kabmann, the Protestant Church has drawn a positive balance sheet. Kabmann said it was an eye-to-eye encounter. The defense minister invited her to visit troops together.
Kabmann has accepted the offer, reports the «Rheinische Post» (Tuesday), published in Dusseldorf, citing government circles. In addition, the CSU politician and the bishop of Hanover agreed on a regular dialogue between the churches and the Bundeswehr. This is how Guttenberg is soon to address the Council of the Protestant Church. Kabmann will give a speech at the Bundeswehr Leadership Academy. There has «never been any doubt» about the social recognition of the Bundeswehr by the Protestant church, Kabmann is said to have ared the defense minister in the conversation on Monday, according to the newspaper. In her New Year’s sermon, Kabmann had been critical of the Afghanistan mission and had met with fierce criticism from the CDU/CSU parties and the SPD.
