Minecraft is a game of infinite creation, but what if you wanted a bit more freedom than infinity? What if you wanted to import whatever image you wanted into your Minecraft world? Well, that’s easy. Time to draw something up and put it into Minecraft.

To draw in Minecraft, you need to choose the drawing to import first. Then you have to go to the Resourcepacks folder. Then within the folder, you will have to create yet another folder, paste some code. Then find a reference painting, place your image in the painting using photoshop, follow few more specifics and you get your painting in Minecraft.

Preparing your Drawing

The first step is to actually choose the drawing to import. This can be any image file you want, but you need to make sure it’s prepared to work with Minecraft. Make the image size 16×16, 32×32, 64×64, 128×128, 256×256, 512×512 or even 1024×1024 depending on the size of your image. These image sizes are what Minecraft is capable of understanding and any other image size won’t work.

Making the ResourcePack

The next step is going to your Resourcepacks folder. This can be reached by pressing the Resourcepacks option in-game and then pressing the Open Resourcepacks Folder button.

In this folder create a new folder with whatever filename you like. This folder will be your Resource pack which contains your custom drawing. In this folder, you will need to add a few files.

Make a new text file and paste in this code:

Then click the Save As… button and save the file with the name ‘pack.mcmeta’ into your custom Resourcepack’s folder.

Next, alongside that pack.mcmeta file, create a new folder called ‘assets’.

Within that folder create a folder called ‘Minecraft’.

Within that folder create a folder called ‘textures’.

Within that folder create a folder titled ‘painting’.

Next, you need to place it over a painting in Minecraft so find a reference image for Minecraft’s paintings. Make sure it is scaled to be 4096×4096.

Now edit the image like this to place in your custom drawings that you prepared earlier. For the drawings that are smaller than 256×256, scale them to be large enough to fill one small painting.

For images larger than 256×256, use the larger painting options. With this method, you can make paintings up to 1024×1024 in size!

Now save the image to your ‘painting’ folder and call it ‘paintings_kristoffer_zetterstrand’.

Placing your Drawing in Minecraft

This part is as simple as placing a painting. It’ll take a few tries to get the ones you want but once you do, they’ll look perfect!

Q. Can I make an image file that is larger than 1024×1024?

A. Yes but you will have to scale your ‘paintings_kristoffer_zetterstrand’ image to be incredibly large. It reaches half a gigabyte when the small paintings are larger than 256×256 so it’s not recommended. But if you have enough memory, you can make as big a painting as you want.

Begin by drawing a rhombus, or slanted square. This will form the Creeper’s head.

Draw a rectangle beneath the square. This will form the body.

Draw two vertical lines through the center of the square.

Draw a narrow rectangle to the right of the large rectangle.

Draw a rectangle to the right of the square. Using a short line, connect the upper right corner of the narrow rectangle to the middle of this new rectangle.

Connect the upper right corner of the newest rectangle to the upper left corner of the original square using two straight lines. The lines should meet in a point. Notice how your shapes now appear to be three dimensional; your square is now a cube.

Draw a narrow rectangle at the base of the body.

Draw a short, straight line through the middle of the narrow rectangle. Then, Draw two rectangles extending downward from the narrow rectangle. The line separating the two new rectangles should meet the line in the middle of the narrow rectangle. These rectangles form the legs and feet of the Creeper.

Extend a line down from the far right corner of the narrow rectangle. Connect it to the other rectangle using a short, straight line. Notice the 3-D effect created once again.

Draw a small rectangle below the Creeper’s body.

Connect this rectangle to the body by drawing a short, straight line from the top right corner. Draw another line from the bottom left corner to the legs.

Draw a rectangle at the bottom of the face, intersecting the vertical lines. Draw two horizontal lines through the rectangle. Then, draw a narrow vertical rectangle extending through and above this rectangle.

Erase the vertical guide lines from the face. Shade six of the squares on the face to create a mouth. Draw two squares above the mouth, and draw a smaller square inside of each. Shade the smaller square.

Draw a rectangle at the bottom of the front feet. Then, draw a horizontal line through the rectangle. Cross the rectangle with five short, vertical lines to form a grid pattern. Do the same on the front of the back feet using a square and two perpendicular lines; only four grid sections will show.

Shade three grid sections on each foot in a checkerboard pattern.
