How to Link Items in Path of Exile (PoE)

In a game like PoE, items are essential to level through the game. You can share the items, and others can see them along with their stats. The sharing of items is also known as linking items.

You can link your items in many places in the game, like Chat, Forum, Whispers, etc. In this guide, we will explore where you can link your items. Along with that, we’ll also discuss how to link the items and share them.

First, let’s start with where you can link the items you have in your inventory and the procedure to do it.

How To Link Items in Different Locations?

If you want to show the items in your inventory to your friends, linking items is the ideal way. You can also link items from the Stash Tabs but not from the Guild Stash. You need to transfer items from the Guild Stash to your inventory first.

So, let’s talk about where you can link your items and how to do it.

Local Chat

In local chat, you can communicate with other players in your nearby area. You can link your inventory items in local chat by following these steps.

This will link your item to the local chat, and players can see the item you want to share with the players nearby you.

Global Chat

Another chat option that you can link your item to is Global Chat. In this chat, you can communicate with all the players within your league only. You can follow the same steps as in Local Chat after opening the game.

If you want to share with a specific number of players, you can use Party Chat mentioned after this heading.

Party Chat

Party Chat enables you to chat with players you are playing with as a party. You can share your inventory items with your party friends. Also, they can see the stats of the item you shared or linked. Here’s how you can share your items in Party Chat.

If your friends want to see the stats of the item, they can just take the mouse key over the name of the item you shared.

Whisper Chat

You can use this chat option to communicate with a single player. To do this, you can follow the same procedure as Local Chat. But, instead of going to Local Chat, go to the “Whisper” tab. Other steps are the same, and then you can link the item to Whisper chat for a single player.

Trade Chat

In the Trade chat option, you can link the items for trading purposes. You can trade your item with another item or you can buy/sell items. You can state your purpose by typing WTT, WTB, or WTS which means Want to Trade, Buy and Sell respectively. But first, it’s important to link items for trading or buying/selling.

The steps for are the same this chat as Local chat. The only difference is you have to go to the “Trade” tab and the other steps are the same.

Guild Chat

Guild chat is for communication with the players in the same guild as you. You can link the specific item in the “Guild” tab in the chat window. Then hold “Ctrl + Alt” on your keyboard and left-click on the item.

Forum

Not only can you link your items in-game but also out of the game. You can do this in the forum of the official webpage of the game. You can link your items in the “Trading” to sell, buy or trade the items. For this, you need to first open the official page of Path of Exile and then you can follow these steps.

After this, your item(s) will be linked to the forum.

So, once again. Ctrl+Alt+Click is just ridiculous. I thought you were joking, guys. You could as well use Ctrl+Alt+Del+Click, what the hell?

Suggestions:
1) Add customizable key bindings for «link item to chat» and «show sockets». By Xendran.
2) Change default «link item to chat» key to Shift. By me.

Did you even try to do it? All the things you complain about are absolutely possible!

Want to link item from stash? Open it and then open chat and alt klick the item. Want to link while checking stats? Open character info panel and inventory then open chat and alt klick the item. Sometimes i really wonder if people just complain for the sake of complaining without testing what they complain about.

Actually the OP has a valid point, linking items is a lot less convenient now. On the other hand before the change you would link your flask accidentally when cheking the loot for example. This mechanic needs some more tweaking for sure.

Edit: I didn’t like the change of keys for linking since it was changed from Ctrl. With Alt I switch to window mode (alt+enter) or to desktop (alt+tab) time to time accidetally.

I alt-click without my chat window even open and it opens it up for me and puts it in the chat box.

Its been changed and I liked it better how it was before.

Reason for the change?

I liked it before as well.

But I don’t hold alt for socket, so not sure those who do.

One thing I do know, is that it’s very annoying to link item with the current set up.

You need to open inventory first then chat window, otherwise you won’t be able to use hotkey while chat window is opened, and you will need to click on the inventory button.

Another annoyance is that you can’t link anything that is covered by the chat window; meaning you will have to move the item out of where chat window will be, before you can open chat window to link.

Before I can simply alt click on an item that’s in my inventory or stash without opening chat window; now I need to make several steps in correct order to link an item; not conveniently at all.

And if you were linking multiple items at once, and realized there one item that you need to link was covered by chat window, you will have to do all that again.

Game zoom stupidity.

After a long time I installed (again!) PoE and wanted to show it to my woman. We have been playing online games for over 20 years and have experienced a lot of crap.
What was the first thing she said at PoE? Why the hell can’t you zoom the screen further out, you hardly see anything!
After 30 minutes she had uninstalled PoE again!
I could only laugh, because I criticize this nonsense already since the Beta 2013 at PoE. But Money Grinding Gear Games doesn’t listen to its players anyway!

You can say this, but you’re just saying «I don’t have this problem so it doesn’t exist», which is extremely common in the PoE community, unfortunately.

This isn’t helpful. If you don’t understand the problem, or if it is a problem you haven’t had, saying that the OP is an idiot because you haven’t had it happen to you doesn’t get anyone anywhere.

Over exaggerating an issue and blaming the game for everything when even the simplest troubleshooting would probably fix it is pretty common in the PoE community, too.
Pretty ironic that the one guy here makes problems for you but you are pretty fine with how OP handle / write things which are pretty similar.

left or right click, and one, two, or three of alt/ctrl/shift, and you know (because you’ve done it before) that you have to have your chat window open and active and you try all 14 combinations. Maybe you even get super crazy and think, hell, am I going nuts and it’s my MIDDLE mouse button? There’s 21 possibilities. Why won’t it work, you think?

It’s either an incredibly frustrating bug, and everyone tells you it doesn’t exist and you’re dumb as rocks, or it’s incredibly poor UI (because you’re doing it from a guild tab and the game designers have arbitrarily decided not to fix or address this properly) and everyone tells you it doesn’t happen and you’re dumb as rocks. Everyone’s too busy being smug and entertaining themselves at your expense to actually take the issue seriously, much less actually read what you wrote. (You want a heady dose of the latter, read some official Microsoft Support threads sometime.)

So, yeah, maybe think more like a troubleshooter and less like a performer trying to entertain an audience. This isn’t r/drama, 4chan, or facebook. (Edit: wasn’t expecting that second example to be censored, huh.)

Edit: Once you have linked it, do what Kieren says. If it’s not working then the link probably went stale. Re-link and it should work.

Just wanted to throw out a huge thank you to kieren_GGG.

I am a very new player myself and though I am having a great time and believe I am catching on pretty quick, this feature was driving me nuts.

I just started farming maps, and I like to stay in trade chat. I would link my items in chat in town and ctrl + c, ctrl + v and none of the links were working and it was really bothering me.

Then I came across this post!

Now I can link my sales/buys in game every 5 min or so and links always work. SO thank you!!

Sorry for epic grave dig on this post guys (came up in search on google) but it drove me crazy so much this should be stickied!
